Almadusk Woods - A dark forested area that is believed to be haunted, thanks to all the plantlife having a penchant for growing to resemble the screaming souls of the damned. Home to Nightfall Manor, an old gothic mansion which once belonged to infamous serial killer The Countess Antumbra. ↳ Known residents: Glasya Elliss, The Countess Antumbra (former)

Arctic North - A polar region up in the northernmost point of Alternia. It snows sweep-round, with large swathes of area being covered in ice sheets and permafrost. Further inland is more forested, and pockets of villages are spread out amongst the region. Larger villages are responsible for delivering goods to the smaller, more remote villages, although frequent blizzards can affect the supply chain. ↳ Known residents: Davitt Cesare (former), Leutia Izotze, Sigrun Apteno

Arctic North, Northern Lights Village - A small community within Alternia's Arctic North region. Only a few log cabins have been built here due to its isolated location, however the residents who live here are all very close. The next closest village is an approximate half hour journey via snowmobile. ↳ Known residents: Redeti Miraze, Fannar Bajorn

Ashwood Bushland - A large eucalyptus forest. The climate is quite arid and sees little to no rainfall in the warmer seasons, making the possibility of bushfires a serious risk. Few trolls live within this forest for that reason, however it is home to many unusual species of flora and fauna native to its highly unique ecosystem. ↳ Known residents: Kalpan Sewick

Bayside Keyes - An exclusively-seadwelling neighbourhood along the coastline. Mega mansions line the streets of this small gated community, each with their own section of private beach. While quieter and less territorial than other seadweller communities, its residents are hostile towards their own neighbours and keep to themselves. The climate may be warm, but the attitudes are ice cold. ↳ Known residents: Nemone Moryan (former), Veruco Miopah (former), Linnae Ishimi (former)

Block 136 - One of Alternia's major cities. A cultural melting pot of which trolls of all castes call their home, however social segregation is still rampant thanks to unofficial caste-based residential districts. Frequent gang activity is kept in check by the Legislacerators' powerful security system known colloquially as The Eyes of God. Block 136, Lowblood District - An area in Block 136's south and southeastern sides of the city where many lowbloods have decided to build their hives. The Deepwoods - A lush forest with thick canopies of thousand-sweep old trees. A light fog covers the majority of the forest, which seems to grow thicker until it becomes too difficult to breathe in within certain areas of the region. Hikers have reported experiencing hallucinations due to severe oxygen deprivation, as well as sightings of a mysterious monster known as The Deepwoods Demon. ↳ Known residents: Skathi Reckam (former), Kisert Azeban, Errett Sachin

Evergreen Woods - A forested area of reasonable size. The platonic ideal of a forest, with large evergreen trees and a temperate climate, and absolutely no notable features. Some trolls who live in this region have opted to construct their hives amongst the treetops. ↳ Known residents: Eichio Maccau, Callan Ranpoe, Amarys Viridi (former)

Grünesmeer Rainforest - A swamp-like rainforest with a slightly humid climate. Oils secreted from the trees give the bodies of water within the forest a distinct bright green hue, which is how the region got its name. Few trolls live in this area, and there's been multiple incidents of unexplained disappearances and drownings. ↳ Known residents: Vivyin Kafkah

Northwestern Highlands - A mountainous region in Alternia's northwest, characterised by its long green rolling plains and cliffs that end abruptly at the coastline. The number of hives in the area are sparse, but those who make the highlands their home witness spectacular views of both the ocean and the countryside. Based on both the Scottish and Irish Highlands. ↳ Known residents: Charon Acerbi, Somerl Alfero

Northwestern Midlands - A region in Alternia's northwest, less mountainous than the highlands and characterised by its many lakes and moorlands. The midlands is home to many castle ruins, and tends to be a popular location for hikers, history enthusiasts, and fans of romantic literature alike. Based on the Lakes District in England. ↳ Known residents: Ariete Qurioe

Pescaruzzia - A region out in Alternia's countryside, known for its large green fields and warm Mediterranean climate. It is home to many vineyards and orchards, as the weather and soil quality is perfect for agricultural endeavours. It is not uncommon for residents of this region to sell their wares at farmers markers, or export them in bulk to nearby towns. Based on the Abruzzo region, South Italy. ↳ Known residents: Zotick Aureio, Astera Ringoh, Rosato Sekaan

Phosphor Forest - A phosphorous mine that was abandoned thousands of sweeps ago and has been long since reclaimed by nature, growing into a lush forest. The traces of phosphorous in the soil have caused the plants and wildlife to develop bioluminescence, at the cost of the air being mildly toxic to those who have not grown accustomed to it. ↳ Known residents: Ananta Cahaya

Revoire City - Officially designated as Block 50. A glitzy coastal city that is a highly popular tourist location for rich socialites and celebrities alike. It is known for the famous Revoire Casino, the largest casino in Alternia, as well as the historic Revoire City Grand Prix. Those with permanent residence in Revoire are almost exclusively highbloods, and live within gated hivestem communities. Sommerset Beach - A stretch of coastline and surrounding islands that are famous for its pink-tinted sand and beautiful coral reef. The seadwellers who live within this region are highly territorial and squabble over ownership of their private beaches and portions of the ocean. Because of this, regular tourism is essentially impossible. ↳ Known residents: Loreli Varuna, Belamy Alchys

Vernrot Harbour - Officially designated as Block 870. A small fishing village plagued by eternal rainfall due to the existence of Those Who Slumber In The Deep. The majority of its residents are unaware that it is a hotspot for both eldritch and supernatural activity. However, the town experiences very little interference from the Empire due to the horrorterrors protecting it. Back to Factorio. Last time, I came within one inserter of setting up nuclear power before noticing that my other solutions had finally brought the factory to a decent equilibrium. This time, I'm making green chips. After some uneventful building, I throw together this prototype.

Very simple; separate train stations for the two inputs, and a belt of output that would go to its own separate station. But that single belt of output is kind of a problem. It can only carry a couple dozen assemblers' worth of green circuits, and if I want this one outpost to make a significant fraction of the circuits I'll need once I start plowing down the tech tree, I need way more. I think I'll aim for four belts of green chips.

Cool, but new problem: Input. Four belts of chips require four belts of iron and six belts of copper. Well, a little less with productivity modules, but not whole belts less. I can't build this as one big line. I have to build it as three little lines.

Well, "little" is perhaps not the right word here. Three sets of eighteen chip assemblers, compared to the five I had in my starter base. My bots are busy.

Wait a second. That's a lot of bots.

Oh, there goes my power again. But on closer inspection, this has less to do with bots charging than it does with coal vanishing, due to the coal train getting stuck at the mines.

After like an hour of messing around with train signals, redesigning intersections trying to figure out what screwed-up rail code is causing these problems...I realize a couple of rail segments in a curve are missing. Pretty much invisible to human eyes. Ugh.

That's where I logged off for the night, and thank goodness for this self-inflicted log forcing me to keep track of what I was doing, because a bunch of real-life stuff kept me from playing Factorio for several months. But now I'm back, and I have a log of what I was trying to do back in March. I started by making sure the coal-fired boilers were back online (getting there), and I noticed something I'm pretty sure is a visual bug.

I think the solar panels are casting shadows on the belt despite A. the presence of a light source on the other side of the belt and B. the fact that it's the middle of the night. Also the shadowed plastic looks too dark either way, especially with the normal plastic next to it.

Anyways, just two paragraphs after thanking March Me for his brilliant foresight, I have to curse him for his stupidity. Apparently he either never set up automated long-handed inserters and assembling machines, or tore it down when he started disassembling the starter base. Foolish either way.

Once I rectified that with a bit of spaghetti stapled onto the starter base, I realized I needed a lot of power poles for the new chip build, and also that I only automated the big ones. But that means I had everything for medium poles in one spot, and I just needed a little spaghetti to get everything into place.

Word of advice: Don't play with the Renai Transportation mod if you don't want to face constant spaghetti temptation. And if you do, make sure not to power thrower inserters until they're set properly.

Anyways, in the time it took to set that up and take the provided poles to power the new build, all the assemblers and inserters were pretty much produced. And in the time it took to figure out the Screenshot Toolkit, they were delivered.

All I need to do is get the trains set up.

Iron is easy enough; I've already got an iron train running from the iron mines to the starter base, so I just tweak its schedule so it switches between supplying the starter base and the circuit station.

I don't have anything like that for copper; the starter base is still running off the, um, two mining drills which still have ore. About 5,000 between them when I checked, one of which should last a bit less than an hour, the other almost two hours. Hm. Maybe I should have set up something for getting copper to the starter base.

I didn't, though. I didn't even get copper delivered to the circuits. That's because of a terrible mistake I made when setting up the copper mine's loading station.

Whichever way I curve this track, it runs into cliffs. That's what cliff explosives are for, but I never researched cliff explosives. And I tore down my starter base's labs ages ago.

Next time, I will do one of three things:

Find some fortuitous route between cliffs that gets me out of this mess

Set up temporary labs to research cliff explosives, and also temporary cliff explosives production

Move the station five meters to the right

I should probably also do something about our copper situation.

Summary: Forde paints a portrait of the twins.

   It was a peaceful day in Renais. The sun was out and there was not one cloud in the sky. Not to mention the weather was absolutely perfect. It was warm out with a nice cool breeze that would come through every so often.

   A good day in Forde’s mind to relax and be lazy for a change. With there being no skirmishes against Grado’s army or any duties to perform that day he thought it best to just laze around all day and do absolutely nothing, and that he did.

   Having just woken up from a very rejuvenating nap, the blonde man had first set his gaze upon the sun's rays peeking through the tree he was currently under. He wondered if this would make a good painting, but after a moment of thought he decided against it. He needed something that was more of a rare sight to see. Anyone could go outside and paint the sun shining through the trees. His eyes trailed upon the perfect subject of his painting or rather the perfect portrait. His subject happened to be Ephraim and Eirika. They sat on a log as the sun enveloped them with its warmth in an almost ethereal manner.

 “Ah yes, what a masterpiece!” He thought to himself as he laid out his art supplies that he secured that day. An easel, several bottles of paint, a canvas, a wooden palette, and a whole lot of brushes were purchased earlier in a town they were passing by. Each utensil was delicately wrapped in brown paper and tied with string. To others they would label them as expensive, but to Forde they weren't. That's just how hobbies are, expensive to some, but not to others. 

  Forde, humming a song that he didn't know but heard the others sing a dozen of times, set about setting up his station. First, he started by putting the canvas on the easel. Then he spread out his brushes and put his paints on his palette. Forde suddenly realized that he had no spare water other than what he was going to drink. He stared briefly at his cup of water. “Yeah, it'll do.” He mumbled to himself. He mixed a green and a yellow together and then proceeded to use his biggest brush to paint the top of the canvas. Using a darker green, Forde painted the grass and the shadows on the beginnings of the trees. Forde used a thin brush to add in the sun rays that bounced off the grass. For the logs and trees, he used a dark brown for the base and light brown for the closer to where the light danced upon them. Forde carefully painted the silhouettes of the royal twins by using a peach color. He dabbed on small, delicate blobs of turquoise and light teal for Eirika and Ephraim’s hair, respectively. For their outfits, he used reds, dark blues with hints of dark green, a light pistachio, golds, light brown, and silver. The finishing touches to his portrait was a blue and lilac butterfly as well as a family of four birds flying by. He gazed at his work, eyeing every little detail, to make sure nothing was missing. The portrait showed the twins cheerily chatting away. Ephraim was in the middle of talking, while Eirika held her hand up to cover her mouth as a laugh flew into the air. Forde had decided that he'd give his masterpiece to them when the war was over.

As many of you may know, depending on when you are reading this, Love Tyrant has just recently finished airing. I was quite pleased. Though a short anime it was definitely different from most other anime I have seen before within the same genre. The concept and story line was the first I have seen of its kind and I greatly enjoyed it. Why I didn’t give it a 5/5 was it was missing a serious WOOOOOWWW factor, the type of feeling that anime that really impact your life give you. I appreciated the comedy and entertainment of this show however that emotional feeling that transcends my computer screen and touches my heart was missing.

All in all, I would most definitely recommend this anime!

BLCD Review: Wonder Border

Synopsis: Five years after breaking up, Kazuaki bumps into his ex, Hiroharu?. Things should have already ended between them but one second they’re going for drinks and they’re going for the bed the next. They both have other lovers but, why is it that they can’t keep away from each other?

Ugh. I’ve finished my log for the meanwhile and I’m just so-

I hadn’t realized that I just got myself the older Kusa no Kanmuri Hoshi no Kanmuri so I went straight to Wonder Border right after. I won’t be reviewing the mentioned CD ‘cause I think there’s an older one - I didn’t understand shit. 😂 I knew something was wrong because we had Morikawa Toshiyuki off the bat and I knew for a fact that he was not part of the main cast for the CD I was looking for. My mistake.

Anyways, on to Wonder Border.  

I mean, I read that and the original Japanese synopsis over and over myself and I knew perfectly well that it was about cheating but, idk. I think I expected that Hiroharu’s boyfriend was going to turn out to be an asshole when reality was, the only asshole here was Hiroharu himself.

Yo, honestly, I just want to forget that I ever listened to this. This is the CD that I was most excited about and when I was disappointed by Renai Fuyuki Todoki yesterday, I was already considering making this my go-to CD (since it’s the last of my log and I have to listen to something while waiting for the new ones to arrive). Don’t get me wrong, the CD was well executed and the VAs were the bomb but my moral compass is just way too good to like the plot. 

I personally didn’t care for our main couple ‘cause they’re both jerks but all my love goes to Natsurou-san for being such a sweetheart. IT DOESN’T HELP THAT NATSUROU’S VOICED BY SHINGAKI TARUSUKE NO ONE HURTS MY YASHIRO HE’S ALREADY BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH. *motherhood intensifies* No apology can ever make up for what they did to him. Natsurou-san loved Hiroharu so much even though he’s clearly too good for him. He never deserved the hurt and his tears were too precious to have been spent on someone like Hiroharu. I really wish that he finds his own happiness and I want that person to spoil him lots and treat him like the king that he deserves. 😭😭😭 I literally just want to jump into their CDverse, hug him with all my might, and sign up for his protection squad if he don’t want me ‘cause I’m ready to love you, Natsurou-san.

I really hoped that Hiroharu could’ve just broken it off with both Kazuaki and Natsurou-san. I believe that it’s the right thing to do after what he did to Natsurou-san. He should give himself some time before deciding if it’s really worth it to come running back to Kazuaki (who really showed little to no respect and remorse over his past and present sins). 

My heart hurts.

I don’t want to talk about this anymore so I’ll just sum up the technicalities in a paragraph. Chemistry was ✓, mattress mambo was ✓ (Hiroharu has sex with both Kazuaki and Natsurou-san, just a heads up), and the execution was ✓ . I didn’t read the raws for this so I can’t say if it’s true to the manga (I hope it’s not and Natsurou has his happy ending). I’d recommend this to anyone who’s out for a gripping story line (it really was) but this ain’t for you if you’re one who’s easily thrown into guilt and has a pity bone like me.  

I think I’ll just make Cupid ni Rakurai as my go-to BLCD for now.

If you’re looking for something to read at the pool or the beach, look no further than the June Manga Review Index! REVIEW OF THE MONTH: CHIHAYAFURU

The writers at Anime Feminist are currently posting some of the best anime and manga-related content on the web right now. If you haven’t visited AF, I encourage you to start with Dee’s in-depth analysis of Chihayafuru, which explores how gender norms shape the plot in volume one, comparing the storylines for the tomboyish Chihaya and her older, more conventionally feminine sister Chitose. It’s a generous, thoughtful essay that prompted me to go back and re-read those first few chapters again. Here’s a little taste of what makes this essay a stand-out:

Sometimes wrenching but ultimately inspiring, Chihayafuru’s first volume quietly challenges traditional gender norms and offers the hope of a supportive community to anyone who’s ever felt like they didn’t quite fit society’s gendered expectations of who they’re “supposed” to be.

There is a knock on the door, and a present left on the doorstep. No one appears to be around. Inside the gift is a handmade birthday card and an invitation to make some sharbat.

One of the less exciting parts of leading an army was making sure they had all of the supplies they needed, so when the knock at the door came, Seth was seated at his desk, going through the inventory logs. They couldn’t expect him to have finished already, could they? “Enter,” he called, looking towards the entrance. When the door remained closed, and no further sound came from beyond, Seth got up to investigate, stretching his back as he walked.

On the other side of the door was a package, no one around to suggest why that might be. Seth eyed it suspiciously. Now, why might someone leave a gift here? Perhaps he should take it to the library to see if it were cursed. Once he had lifted it into his hands, however, it did not seem to possess any hint of magic. The wrappings also smelt faintly of patchouli and incense. Ahh, perhaps a package from Caer Pelyn, then. Though if Saleh really was in Renais, it would have been nice to have tea with the man.

Setting the wrappings on a small table next to the entrance, Seth drew out the card, smiling at the craftsmanship of the sage. He let out a soft chuckle when he read the inscription; if he learned how to make sharbat Bethie would surely never let him know a moment’s peace. Still, the card was delightful, and he would have to write Saleh and arrange a time to next meet up with him. However, he still had his paperwork to get back to, so he props the card up on a corner of his desk, and goes back to his tedious task.

The woman of her dreams

It had been three days since L'Arachel left her home in Rausten, and her smile was still on her face. She was accompanied by her trusty horse, her bodyguard, Dozla, and her friend and escort, Rennac.

As she was heading out of Rausten's territory, she came upon a lake, where she decided to rest temporarily, even if it was the middle of the day, and sent Dozla to get wood to make a fire, an order he didn't hesitate to obey. Rennac, who could only stare at the other man as he eagerly went to cut wood, was left alone with the princess, who had stepped out of her horse, observing the water's reflection of the clouds in the sky.

"L'Arachel, why did we stop?" Rennac appreciated the rest, but didn't like lost time. "We haven't even gotten out of Rausten."

"Can't you just enjoy the view?" Her smile wasn't disturbed. "You can thank me later, after we come home and you're considered 'The great L'Arachel's helper'."

He walked closer, to the edge of the lake, if only to hear her mumbling. "Why would I bother with such a dumb title? Your payment is enough, Dozla can have all the glory for all I care."

"Hmm-hmm," she nodded. Rennac knew his message wasn't clear enough for her. "That's the initial reason you decided to accompany me."

"It's not. It's my only reason." He decided to sit down, looking around from time to time. "And I didn't 'decide', you hired me."

"What do you see when you look at the water, Rennac?"

The question seemed to come out of nowhere, but they were in front of a lake. He still had to get used to her changing subjects so suddenly. "Well, I see the sky."

"And what else?" Rennac frowned, but noticed L'Arachel was looking at him. "Surely, there must be more than that, right?"

"I see pieces of gold." L'Arachel crossed her arms. "What? I've always dreamt of finding treasure deep in the water." She turned away from him, back at the lake. It takes Rennac about a minute to know she's tapping her foot. He sighs.

"Aren't you going to ask what I see in the water?" she said, still crossing her arms.

"You can pretend I did." Another smile, which L'Arachel answered with a pout.

"Well... it reminds me of a girl I saw in a dream." Rennac looked upwards, noticing she was back to smiling. He scratched his head.

"And?"

"What do you mean 'and'? She was beautiful, with hair as blue and beautiful as... no, even more so than this lake!" She made gestures with her hands, as if she could explain better with them than with her words.

"So what?" He shrugged. "Lots of girls have blue hair. What makes her so special?"

"Don't you know?" She let out a  dreamy sigh. "They say that sometimes you can see your fate in your dreams." She closed her eyes, Rennac rolled his. "She can be anywhere... but I'm here."

"Is that why you left home? To look for her?"

"Of course not!" She stepped as hard as she could on the ground. The sudden movement even startled her horse. "How dare you joke about my reasons to go in this trip?" Rennac was unmoved by this.

"Relax, it was just a joke. I know all about your quest for vengeance, to seek monsters and all that. Don't worry, I take you seriously."

L'Arachel, offended, went back to her horse, getting ready to leave once again.

"Don't be like that, ugh," he groaned, standing up and going after her. "Fine, tell me more about this girl. What happened in your dream?"

"That is none of your business, starting from now." She was brushing her horse's mane with her hands, looking around to see if Dozla was coming.

She was testing his patience. "Alright, then, I'm sorry. Can we go back to when you were happily telling me about your dream, as annoying as it might seem?"

L'Arachel refused to keep the conversation, as she got on her horse and began riding it. Rennac took a deep breath, as he looked around to see that Dozla was carrying a pile of logs all by himself. Pretending he didn't see, he walked further away from Renais.

Deep inside him, however, he was really curious about L'Arachel's dream. She, however, was hesitant to keep talking about this subject, as this wasn't the only time she had dreamt of her... and for a slight moment, she doubted her dream would become true.

Tampões biológicos e equilíbrio ácido-básico

Os tampões biológicos são responsáveis por auxiliar o organismo a resistir as variações de pH, o que é fundamental para manter a homeostasia.  O tampão funciona de maneira a misturar ácidos fracos e suas bases conjugadas quando são adicionados H+ ou OH-. Sendo os ácidos doadores de prótons e as bases, aceptores de prótons. 

Relembrando as características da água e que ela se dissocia muito pouco, conclui-se que então dependendo da temperatura, essa dissociação pode ser maior ou menor. Sendo que em maior temperatura, há maior capacidade de ionização e, em menor temperatura, uma menor capacidade. Na auto-dissociação da molécula de água, percebe-se que ela libera um H+ e um OH-.

Para calcular a ionização utiliza-se: 

Kw= constante de ionização da água.

A importância dessa regulação do pH é tão grande para os sistemas biológicos que observamos que as funções das proteínas são afetadas por essa variação, podendo perder suas funções sendo desnaturadas. Assim como as proteínas, as enzimas também são afetadas por variações no pH. A homeostasia de diversas substâncias devem ser mantidas, isto é, os limites dos valores do pH devem ser mantidos, e o sistema tampão auxilia nesse processo, visando o funcionamento pleno dos sistemas biológicos do organismo. Os valores normais de pH do sangue varia de 7,35 - 7,45, caso aja uma variação maior, o organismo pode sofrer danos em suas diversas funções. Não só o valor do pH do sangue é importante, mas o valor do pH do estômago, dos intestinos, do suor, da urina, do citoplasma e entre outros sistemas e órgãos, e as variações podem indicar o surgimento de patologias. O organismo trabalha com várias faixas de pH de acordo com seu funcionamento fisiológico.

Um ácido forte é aquele que se dissocia completamente e um ácido fraco se dissocia parcialmente. É importante que possamos saber o quanto cada ácido se dissocia, e para cada ácido se tem uma constante de dissociação que é conhecida quando ele é colocado na água, conhecido como Ka (Kácido). O Ka é medido pela multiplicação da concentração das substâncias ionizadas, dividido pela concentração do que não foi ionizado. Isso significa que se a ionização for muito grande, teremos um valor de Ka maior, e quando maior o Ka, mais forte é o ácido. Já o valor do pKa, quanto maior, mais fraco é o ácido. O pKa é uma forma de saber um valor mais plausível para a interpretação. Logo, pKa= -log (Ka).

Em resumo, os ácidos básicos em equilíbrio na natureza, dentro dos sistemas biológicos, foram utilizados para formar os tampões biológicos, como vimos anteriormente. Quando se coloca ácido na solução com o tampão, a base conjugada reage com o próton, já quando se acrescenta uma base, quem reage é o ácido. Com isso, se evita uma alteração brusca no pH mantendo a homeostasia e funcionamento do organismo, porém, se tem um limite para o acréscimo dessas substâncias que o tampão pode suportar. Essa reação forma uma curva no gráfico sigmoide.

Esse sistema é adotado pelo sangue, e o tampão biológico sanguíneo consiste, na hemácia, que gera ácido carbônico (ou CO2) que reage com o bicarbonato de sódio. Além do bicarbonato, as albuminas e globulinas também participam no tamponamento do pH, que são proteínas anfóteras, e que possuem a capacidade de se ligar com ambos íons. Os tampões fosfatos também podem acontecer, porém, o tampão bicarbonato é o mais importante. Se tiver mais ácido, o bicarbonato vai reagir com o ácido carbônico, e a sua desidratação formará H2O e CO2, e se adionar OH-, quem reage é o CO2. 

Uma equação ideal para calcular os ácidos fracos, que é mais comum nos sistemas biológicos, utiliza-se a equação de Henderson-Hasselbalch, que mede o pKa dos ácidos. Usa-se essa equação para calcular o pH dos tampões e também do sangue.

Logo, pH= 6,1 + log [HCO3-]/H2CO3]

Mas, como são formados os ácidos e bases em um organismo vivo? Através do próprio metabolismo e com a alimentação. No entanto, o processo de tamponamento biológico, normalmente, está acoplado a ventilação pulmonar, que funciona de maneira a acoplar o sistema de entrada e saída de CO2, realizando anidrase carbônica. Se esse mecanismo não for suficiente para regular o pH sanguíneo e eliminar o CO2, que acidifica o sangue provocando uma hiperventilação, a eliminação dos compostos ácidos ou básicos também pode ser feito através da excreção da urina, filtrada pelo rim. Na excreção de prótons pela urina, esse H+ estará acoplado no bifosfato de sódio ou amônia, e ocorre a desaminação de aminoácidos dentro da célula tubular nos rins. OBS.: problemas renais podem prejudicar o tamponamento biológico, em consequência de uma má eliminação do H+ ou OH-. 

Os distúrbios podem estar relacionados com o metabolismo ou com a troca gasosa, e pode ser uma acidose tanto metabólica quando respiratória ou uma alcalose. Um aumento da pressão do CO2, causa uma acidose respiratória e uma maior ventilação, enquanto que uma pressão menor de CO2, causa uma alcalose respiratória e uma hipoventilação. Quando há pouco HCO3-, há uma acidose metabólica e uma maior reabsorção de bicarbonato nos rins e se houver um aumento do HCO3-, acarretando em uma alcalose metabólica, o rim absorverá menos bicarbonato, realizando assim o tamponamento biológico.

Dentro do metabolismo existem duas situações em que se pode gerar uma acidose: diabetes mellitus ou jejum prolongado, que gera através da lipólise, corpos cetônicos, que são compostos ácidos, ou, a acidose proveniente do metabolismo muscular de glicose, que quando é feito em um nível de oxigenação inadequado, gera um excesso de ácido láctico, o que pode acontecer em cães ou equinos, isto é, animais atletas. Esse ácido láctico é gerado por um quadro de fadiga muscular, e acarretando em uma acidemia. Todos esses ácidos irão reagir com o bicarbonato da mesma maneira já discutida acima, em que o próton bicarbonato gera CO2 + H2O, e essa água não altera o pH, já o CO2 pode ser retirado da circulação sanguínea, isso se deve pois os organismos são sistemas abertos, o que permite a troca direta e acoplada, regulando sempre o tampão.

Um fato interessante, é que após uma refeição com muita proteína, o organismo se encontra sobre o estado de alcalose metabólica, que diferentemente da alcalose respiratória, não está relacionado com o mecanismo de trocas gasosas. Observe a reação abaixo que ocorre na célula parietal: 

H+ + HCO3- <=> H2 + CO2 

Quando se gera o HCl, o H+ vai para o estômago e o bicarbonato retorna para o sangue. Cada mol de HCl gerado, gera também 1 mol de bicarbonato que vai para o sangue, logo, acidificando o estômago, o sangue se torna mais alcalino. Nesse momento, o CO2 não é tão eliminado, e a respiração fica mais relaxada, deixando o sangue dentro da variação normal de pH.
