STARSHIPS ARE MEANT TO FLY
SpaceX was founded in 2002 to expand access to outer space. Not just for government or traditional satellite operators, but for new participants around the globe. Today, we’re flying at an unprecedented pace as the world’s most active launch services provider. SpaceX is safely and reliably launching astronauts, satellites, and other payloads on missions benefiting life on Earth and preparing humanity for our ultimate goal: to explore other planets in our solar system and beyond.
Starship is paramount to making that sci-fi future, along with a growing number of U.S. national priorities, a reality. It is the largest and most powerful space transportation system ever developed, and its fully and rapidly reusable design will exponentially increase humanity’s ability to access and utilize outer space. Full reusability has been an elusive goal throughout the history of spaceflight, piling innumerable technical challenges on what is already the most difficult engineering pursuit in human existence. It is rocket science, on ludicrous mode.
Every flight of Starship has made tremendous progress and accomplished increasingly difficult test objectives, making the entire system more capable and more reliable. Our approach of putting flight hardware in the flight environment as often as possible maximizes the pace at which we can learn recursively and operationalize the system. This is the same approach that unlocked reuse on our Falcon fleet of rockets and made SpaceX the leading launch provider in the world today.
To do this and do it rapidly enough to meet commitments to national priorities like NASA’s Artemis program, Starships need to fly. The more we fly safely, the faster we learn; the faster we learn, the sooner we realize full and rapid rocket reuse. Unfortunately, we continue to be stuck in a reality where it takes longer to do the government paperwork to license a rocket launch than it does to design and build the actual hardware. This should never happen and directly threatens America’s position as the leader in space.
Tumblr media
FLIGHT 5
The Starship and Super Heavy vehicles for Flight 5 have been ready to launch since the first week of August. The flight test will include our most ambitious objective yet: attempt to return the Super Heavy booster to the launch site and catch it in mid-air.
This will be a singularly novel operation in the history of rocketry. SpaceX engineers have spent years preparing and months testing for the booster catch attempt, with technicians pouring tens of thousands of hours into building the infrastructure to maximize our chances for success. Every test comes with risk, especially those seeking to do something for the first time. SpaceX goes to the maximum extent possible on every flight to ensure that while we are accepting risk to our own hardware, we accept no compromises when it comes to ensuring public safety.
It's understandable that such a unique operation would require additional time to analyze from a licensing perspective. Unfortunately, instead of focusing resources on critical safety analysis and collaborating on rational safeguards to protect both the public and the environment, the licensing process has been repeatedly derailed by issues ranging from the frivolous to the patently absurd. At times, these roadblocks have been driven by false and misleading reporting, built on bad-faith hysterics from online detractors or special interest groups who have presented poorly constructed science as fact.
We recently received a launch license date estimate of late November from the FAA, the government agency responsible for licensing Starship flight tests. This is a more than two-month delay to the previously communicated date of mid-September. This delay was not based on a new safety concern, but instead driven by superfluous environmental analysis. The four open environmental issues are illustrative of the difficulties launch companies face in the current regulatory environment for launch and reentry licensing.
Tumblr media
STEEL AND WATER
Starship’s water-cooled steel flame deflector has been the target of false reporting, wrongly alleging that it pollutes the environment or has operated completely independent of regulation. This narrative omits fundamental facts that have either been ignored or intentionally misinterpreted.
At no time did SpaceX operate the deflector without a permit. SpaceX was operating in good faith under a Multi-Sector General Permit to cover deluge operations under the supervision of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). SpaceX worked closely with TCEQ to incorporate numerous mitigation measures prior to its use, including the installation of retention basins, construction of protective curbing, plugging of outfalls during operations, and use of only potable (drinking) water that does not come into contact with any industrial processes. A permit number was assigned and made active in July 2023. TCEQ officials were physically present at the first testing of the deluge system and given the opportunity to observe operations around launch.
The water-cooled steel flame deflector does not spray pollutants into the surrounding environment. Again, it uses literal drinking water. Outflow water has been sampled after every use of the system and consistently shows negligible traces of any contaminants, and specifically, that all levels have remained below standards for all state permits that would authorize discharge. TCEQ, the FAA, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service evaluated the use of the system prior to its initial use, and during tests and launch, and determined it would not cause environmental harm.
When the EPA issued its Administrative Order in March 2024, it was done before seeking a basic understanding of the facts of the water-cooled steel flame deflector’s operation or acknowledgement that we were operating under the Texas Multi-Sector General Permit. After meeting with the EPA—during which the EPA stated their intent was not to stop testing, preparation, or launch operations—it was decided that SpaceX should apply for an individual discharge permit. Despite our previous permitting, which was done in coordination with TCEQ, and our operation having little to nothing in common with industrial waste discharges covered by individual permits, we applied for an individual permit in July 2024.
The subsequent fines levied on SpaceX by TCEQ and the EPA are entirely tied to disagreements over paperwork. We chose to settle so that we can focus our energy on completing the missions and commitments that we have made to the U.S. government, commercial customers, and ourselves. Paying fines is extremely disappointing when we fundamentally disagree with the allegations, and we are supported by the fact that EPA has agreed that nothing about the operation of our flame deflector will need to change. Only the name of the permit has changed.

GOOD STEWARD
No launch site operates in a vacuum. As we have built up capacity to launch and developed new sites across the country, we have always been committed to public safety and mitigating impacts to the environment. At Starbase, we implement an extensive list of mitigations developed with federal and state agencies, many of which require year-round monitoring and frequent updates to regulators and consultation with independent biological experts. The list of measures we take just for operations in Texas is over two hundred items long, including constant monitoring and sampling of the short and long-term health of local flora and fauna. The narrative that we operate free of, or in defiance of, environmental regulation is demonstrably false.
Environmental regulations and mitigations serve a noble purpose, stemming from common-sense safeguards to enable progress while preventing undue impact to the environment. However, with the licensing process being drawn out for Flight 5, we find ourselves delayed for unreasonable and exasperating reasons.
On Starship’s fourth flight, the top of the Super Heavy booster, commonly known as the hot-stage, was jettisoned to splash down on its own in the Gulf of Mexico. The hot-stage plays an important part in protecting the booster during separation from Starship’s upper stage before detaching during the booster’s return flight. This operation was analyzed thoroughly ahead of Starship’s fourth flight, specifically focused on any potential impact to protected marine species. Given the distribution of marine animals in the specific landing area and comparatively small size of the hot-stage, the probability of a direct impact is essentially zero. This is something previously determined as standard practice by the FAA and the National Marine Fisheries Service for the launch industry at large, which disposes of rocket stages and other hardware in the ocean on every single launch, except of course, for our own Falcon rockets which land and are reused. The only proposed modification for Starship’s fifth flight is a marginal change in the splashdown location of the hot-stage which produces no increase in likelihood for impacting marine life. Despite this, the FAA leadership approved a 60-day consultation with the National Marine Fisheries Service. Furthermore, the mechanics of these types of consultations outline that any new questions raised during that time can reset the 60-day counter, over and over again. This single issue, which was already exhaustively analyzed, could indefinitely delay launch without addressing any plausible impact to the environment.
Another unique aspect to Starship’s fifth flight and a future return and catch of the Super Heavy booster will be the audible sonic booms in the area around the return location. As we’ve previously noted, the general impact to those in the surrounding area of a sonic boom is the brief thunder-like noise. The FAA, in consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, evaluated sonic booms from the landing of the Super Heavy and found no significant impacts to the environment. Although animals exposed to the sonic booms may be briefly startled, numerous prior studies have shown sonic booms of varying intensity have no detrimental effect on wildlife. Despite this documented evidence, the FAA leadership approved an additional 60-day consultation with U.S. Fish and Wildlife as a slightly larger area could experience a sonic boom.
Lastly, the area around Starbase is well known as being host to various protected birds. SpaceX already has extensive mitigations in place and has been conducting biological monitoring for birds near Starbase for nearly 10 years. The protocol for the monitoring was developed with U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, and is conducted by professional, qualified, independent biologists. To date, the monitoring has not shown any population-level impacts to monitored bird populations, despite unsubstantiated claims to the contrary that the authors themselves later amended. Even though Starship’s fifth flight will take place outside of nesting season, SpaceX is still implementing additional mitigations and monitoring to minimize impacts to wildlife, including infrared drone surveillance pre- and post-launch to track nesting presence. We are also working with USFWS experts to assess deploying special protection measures prior to launches during bird nesting season.
SpaceX is committed to minimizing impact and enhancing the surrounding environment where possible. One of our proudest partnerships in South Texas is with Sea Turtle Inc, a local nonprofit dedicated to sea turtle conservation. SpaceX assists with finding and transporting injured sea turtles to their facilities for treatment. SpaceX has also officially adopted Boca Chica Beach through the Texas General Lands Office Adopt a Beach Program, with the responsibility of picking up litter and promoting a litter-free environment. SpaceX sponsors and participates in quarterly beach cleanups as well as quarterly State Highway 4 cleanups. SpaceX has removed hundreds of pounds of trash from the beach and State Highway 4 over the last several years. SpaceX also fosters environmental education at the local level by hosting school tours as well as an Annual Environmental Education Day with Texas Parks and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, and Sea Turtle Inc.
TO FLY
Despite a small, but vocal, minority of detractors trying to game the regulatory system to obstruct and delay the development of Starship, SpaceX remains committed to the mission at hand. Our thousands of employees work tirelessly because they believe that unlimited opportunities and tangible benefits for life on Earth are within reach if humanity can fundamentally advance its ability to access space. This is why we’re committed to continually pushing the boundaries of spaceflight, with a relentless focus on safety and reliability.
Because life will be multiplanetary, and will be made possible by the farsighted strides we take today.

PG-192 Self Propelled Artillery Vehicle
Commission work Following the wake of the first Echerion-Starsect war, the Starsect Republic recognized a dire need in a commonpool armored combat vehicle, as both the strain to logistics of having to supply hundreds of different models of tanks, as well has having to train their crews should one of them fall, was enough to give pause to any military force. The plan was for a single family of vehicles that could be adapted to any changing combat situation and need, from the ubiquitous main battle tank, to armor recovery vehicles, that placed a very strong emphasis on crew protection at all costs. The tank that would lay claim to its fame had its predecessor on Riria tested brutally during the Echerion Syndicates twelve year long siege of the planet. Taking lessons learned during the siege and the various battles that other comparable AFVs were involved with, the company that would ultimately win the contract for the Advanced Armored Combat System program, presented what would later be dubbed the T-190 Therus, a vehicle that showed astonishing promise, with extreme ease of modularization, modification, and strong emphasis on ease of manufacture and maintenance, without compromising the republic's crew survivability requirement, the proto-Therus won in every category with flying colors. While expensive initially, and in spite of many naysayers within the complicated web of the republic's bureaucracy, the new Therus proved to be well worth the investment on a multitude of worlds, especially ones that nearly had their armor cores wiped out by the fanatical forces of the syndicate and were in dire need of an upgrade. It however would not be until the second Echerion-Starsect war where the tank was able to truly test its metal against the syndicate armor and infantry forces. While not uncommon for various Therus tanks to be taken out of action by other tanks or mainly infantry forces with ATGMs, it served its main purpose well in keeping its crew safe, and of course proving its extreme reliability in tandem with its adaptability, the tank served its crews well, and earned its respect in the eyes of many within the Ranger Corps and newly forged Predator Legions, and earning itself an equally fearsome reputation with the forces of the syndicate. The Therus since has served the republic well for the better part of nearly 20 thousand standard years, and the design has seen very little in terms of any major changes, apart from hull armor material composites, electronic equipment upgrades, redundancy backups, and even engines, it still holds itself to the original operational promise of crew survivability and protection, as well as extreme mission flexibility, a reputation that is unrivaled by any comparable military hardware, even in the present day. While a jack of all trades is a master of none, the Therus proved that it's far better than a master of one. Do not use this design without permission.

The magnemite line.
Tumblr media
The magnemite line.
A strange yet no less loving pokemon.
General notes:
Many pokemon have unusual body plans. The magnemite line is one of the most well known. With its almost robotic design one could be fooled into thinking it isn’t alive and aware. This could not be further from the truth.
General care:The magnemite line is one that requires set up. As it is drawn to electrical sources, appliances in your house need to be surge-proofed. I’m told Devon corp sells devices specifically for magnemite owners to protect their appliances. However, you will need to leave at least one power socket free to allow them to feed. Though you save money on pokekibble, be prepared for a small spike in power bills.
That said, they have been reliably observed to eat berries by crushing them with their bodies and appearing to absorb the juice, though it’s something of a mystery how that process works. Keep wet wipes handy. Though you may think them brainless, magnemite does require mental stimulation. Though they have no hands or means of manipulating things, they can do one thing.
Stare.
They’ll stare at the TV. They’ll stare out the window. They’ll stare at any and all new things in the house. They’ll stare at you coming home. They’ll stare at you making dinner. And they’ll stare at you in your sleep until they power down ready to stare at things in the morning. With no hands or other senses like smell, they have powerful visual acuity. Why else are their eyes so proportionately large? All they really have to experience the world is vision. This makes them one of the few pokemon suited for those who often have to leave the house, such as office workers who might not be able to bring their pokemon to work. Flick your tv to the poke-documentary channel and they’ll be enraptured until you come home. That said, they’re no less affectionate than many other pokemon, and just because they don’t mind solitude that doesn’t mean you can simply ignore them. They get attached to their trainers and like to be included in your life. If one is truly concerned about them being alone, it’s not hard to catch another two magnemites and introduce them (following safe introductory methods) to get a magneton. Magneton are surprisingly vocal with each other. They’ll hum, buzz, vibrate and whirr at each other for hours. Many people reckon a magneton quietly talking to itself at night is better than any white noise machine for sleep aids. Magnezone are a little more interactive, and seem to be able to utilize certain fields to manipulate objects. This tends to manifest as them picking up an item, staring at it for a good while, then setting it down and selecting another. They very rarely break things in this way. It’s easier to just let them quietly fiddle. All members of the magnemite line benefit greatly from the occasional polish. They do sell magnemite formulated metal polish, but with their metallic biology no adverse effects have been seen from just buying some from the hardware store if it’s hard to source in your area.
Care rating: Green.
Training: Magnemite are simple enough to battle train, and with few messy or destructive habits, are easy to housetrain. Training rating: Green
Safety: All electric types carry the hazard of shocks, and these pokemon are no exception. Though less reactive than a number of other pokemon, they aren’t oblivious, and sudden noises or movement may prompt an instinctive jolt. If you have a pacemaker or any kind of heart condition, or conditions such as epilepsy that may be triggered by flashing lights, magnemite (or any electric type for that matter) is not the pokemon for you. Safety rating: Orange
Overall ranking.Chill little dudes that like their own company just as much as they like yours. Good for those who can’t always be home, but don’t forget to give them love and affection. However, they may incur some setup costs unless you’re willing to keep paying for new microwaves.

Borderline insane technical ramble ahead. Might be entertaining. Might be informative. Might just be nonsense. Beware.
I fucking love the Dell Optiplex line.
One of my oddities is that I collect computers like no one's business. I've got like 20 of the things.
Recently, one of my fleet, an HP consumer grade computer died. I'm not too broken up about this (or any computer's death, if I'm being honest), since I was able to pull the drives, there was nothing important on it, and it was an HP, which sucks ass.
I was able to replace it with a new guy: A Dell Optiplex 990.
Now, these little bastards are everywhere. They've looked almost identical for the better part of 15 years, too. They're so ubiquitous that no matter who you are or where you are, you're almost guaranteed to have seen an Optiplex line computer at some point.
Dell Optiplex computers are a standard machine in almost any workplace, from factories to hospitals & research facilities. They're aimed at commercial and industrial use, so most workplaces have them somewhere.
Many of them have also made it into the consumer market, since when companies need to upgrade their fleets, they will often auction off the old computers. Companies will reimage them, then sell them as cheap refurbs, at which point they'll keep chugging along. Some of the oldest of their most iconic design, the black box with the silver grey front bevel plate, are coming up on 20 years, and can still be found occasionally in service in distant corners.
Begs the question though: Why are there so many of them? There are a lot of commercial manufacturers of hardware. Almost all the computer brands that you're probably familiar with make commercial hardware.
The answer is simple. They're good computers. Things like hard drives and the RAM can be swapped and upgraded without tools, making them dead simple to service. They don't really have the same firmware problems other manufacturers do (cough HP cough), so you won't see performance falloffs or stability problems.
They're not really obnoxious pieces of hardware either. They're not loud, brightly colored, or large. The SFF and USFF computers are super densely packed, but still have solid hardware inside. They can just sit in a dark corner until they're needed, quietly humming away. Since their cases are so plain, they're not really a distraction, they're just kind of... there.
Really, they're what a computer should be. Easy to maintain for anyone, reliable, and nondescript.

Putting in place state-of-the-art infrastructure that is tailored to meet the demands of AI workloads as effectively as feasible is the solution. Dell PowerEdge servers and software are built with Smart Power and Cooling to assist IT operations make the most of their power and thermal budgets.
Astute Cooling
Effective power management is but one aspect of the problem. Recall that cooling ability is also essential. At the highest workloads, Dell’s rack-scale system, which consists of eight XE9680 H100 servers in a rack with an integrated rear door heat exchanged, runs at 70 kW or less, as we disclosed at Dell Technologies World 2024. In addition to ensuring that component thermal and reliability standards are satisfied, Dell innovates to reduce the amount of power required to maintain cool systems.
Together, these significant hardware advancements including taller server chassis, rack-level integrated cooling, and the growth of liquid cooling, which includes liquid-assisted air cooling, or LAAC improve heat dissipation, maximise airflow, and enable larger compute densities. An effective fan power management technology is one example of how to maximise airflow. It uses an AI-based fuzzy logic controller for closed-loop thermal management, which immediately lowers operating costs.
Constructed to Be Reliable
Dependability and the data centre are clearly at the forefront of Dell’s solution development. All thorough testing and validation procedures, which guarantee that their systems can endure the most demanding situations, are clear examples of this.
A recent study brought attention to problems with data centre overheating, highlighting how crucial reliability is to data centre operations. A Supermicro SYS‑621C-TN12R server failed in high-temperature test situations, however a Dell PowerEdge HS5620 server continued to perform an intense workload without any component warnings or failures.

Overcoming Challenges in Data Integration: Insights from Consulting Experts
Data integration for enterprises can take longer due to technological, financial, and time constraints. As a result, modifying data strategies to mitigate risks like incompatibility between many tools or budget overruns is crucial. Companies must also prepare for new compliance requirements to ensure ethical data operations. This post will explore such challenges in data integration while listing valuable insights from consulting experts in this domain.
What is Data Integration?
Data integration merges data from disparate origins and presents it to maximize comprehension, consolidation, and summarization effectiveness. Integrated data views rely on data ingestion, preparation, and advanced insight extraction. It also streamlines the data operations services across regulatory report creation, helpdesks, and 360-degree client life cycle management.
All data integration strategies involve the extract, transform, and load (ETL) pipelines regardless of business units or target industries. At the same time, the scope of planning and quality assurance in each process varies due to domain-specific data classification factors.
For instance, the accounting departments must handle extensive numerical data while interpreting legal and organizational requirements for transparency. On the other hand, production engineering and design professionals will use visualizations to improve goods or service packages. Accordingly, accountants will use unique tools distinct from engineers’ software.
Later, the leaders might want a comprehensive overview of the synergy between these departments. Therefore, they must determine efficient data integration strategies. The data will move between several programs, carrying forward many updates throughout a project’s progression based on those roadmaps.
Overcoming the Challenges in Data Integration Using Insights from Consulting Experts
1| Data Quality Hurdles
Linking, consolidating, and updating data from several sources will exponentially increase the quality-related threats. For instance, consider multimedia assets from social networks or unreliable news outlets. They can help your secondary market research and social listening initiatives. However, you want to verify the authenticity of gathered intelligence to avoid inaccurate data ingestion.
Evaluating relevance, freshness, and consistency is essential to data quality assurance from creation to archival. So, corporations have started leveraging data lifecycle management to boost dataset integrity, helping make integration less of a hassle.
Insights:
Most consulting experts suggest developing ecosystems that check and recheck quality metrics at each stage of a data integration lifecycle. Moreover, they recommend maintaining periodic data backups with robust version control mechanisms. Doing so will help quality preservation efforts if errors arise after a feature update or a malicious third party is likely to break the system using malware.
2| Networking and Computing Infrastructure Problems
Legacy hardware and software often introduce bottlenecks, hurting data integration’s efficiency. Modern integration strategies demand more capable IT infrastructure due to the breakthroughs like the internet of things (IoT), 5G networks, big data, and large language models. If a company fails to procure the necessary resources, it must postpone data integration.
Technologies integral to capturing, storing, checking, sorting, transferring, and encrypting data imply significant electricity consumption. Besides, a stable networking environment with adequate governance implementations enables secure data transactions. The underlying computing infrastructure is not immune to physical damage or downtime risks due to maintenance mishaps.
What Consulting Experts Say:
Enterprises must invest in reliable, scalable, and efficient hardware-software infrastructure. This will benefit them by providing a stable working environment and allowing employees to witness productivity improvements. Upgrading IT systems will also enhance cybersecurity, lowering the risk of zero-day vulnerabilities.
3| Data Availability Delays
Governments, global firms, educational institutions, hospitals, and import-export organizations have a vast network of regional offices. These offices must also interact with suppliers, contractors, and customers. Due to the scale of stakeholder engagement, reports concerning office-level performance and inventory might arrive late.
Underproductive employees, tech troubleshooting, slow internet connectivity, and a poor data compression ratio will make data sourcing, updating, and analyzing inefficient. As a result, a data integration officer must address time-consuming activities through strategic resource allocation. If left unaddressed, delays in data delivery will adversely affect conflict resolution and customer service.
Expert Insights:
Train your employees to maximize their potential and reduce data acquisition, categorization, and transformation delays. Additionally, you will want to embrace automation through artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Find methods to increase the data compression ratio and accelerate encryption-decryption processing cycles. These measures will help accomplish near-real-time data integration objectives.
4| Vendor Lock-ins
A vendor lock-in results from inconvenience and restrictions when a client wants to switch to another service provider or toolkit. Although data integration platforms claim they celebrate the ease of migrating databases with competitors, they might covertly create vendor lock-ins.
For instance, some data sourcing and sorting ecosystems might limit the supported formats for bulk export commands. Others will use misleading methods to design the graphical user interface (GUI) of account deletion and data export features. They involve too many alerts or generate corrupt export files.
Practical Insights:
Combining multiple proprietary and open-source software tools offers the best cost optimization opportunities. When you select a data vendor, audit the tools the willing data integration providers use to deliver their assistance. Do they use a completely proprietary system based on an unknown file format unsupported by other platforms?
Finally, you must check all the data import, export, and bulk transfer options in vendors’ documentation. After you check a data firm’s current client base, track its online ratings and scan for red flags indicating potential vendor lock-ins.
5| Data-Related Ethical and Legal Liabilities
Confidentiality of investor communication and stakeholders’ privacy rights are two components of legal risk exposure due to enterprise data integration. Additionally, brands must interpret industry guidelines and regional directives for regulatory disclosures.
They must comply with laws concerning personally identifiable information (PII) about employees and customers. Otherwise, they will attract policymakers’ ire, and customers will lose faith in brands that do not comply with the laws of their countries.
Insights:
Consulting experts recommend collaborating with regional legal teams and global governance compliance specialists. After all, mitigating legal risks can help increase business resilience.
Improved compliance ratings have also benefited several brands wanting to be attractive to impact investors. Meanwhile, customers demanding ethical data operations at business establishments love supporting brands with an exceptional governance culture.
Conclusion
Most brands need specialists' help to develop consolidated data views during reporting because they have flawed data integration strategies. So, they require trustworthy insights from reputed consulting experts with a proven track record of overcoming challenges in data integration. The selected data partners must excel at ETL implementation, governance compliance, and data quality management (DQM).
The corporate world champions data-centric business development. Understandably, the need for scalable data integration reflects the increased stakeholder awareness regarding the importance of connecting disparate data sources. With transparent, fast, and accurate data, organizations will enhance their competitive edge amid this intense digital transformation race.

Meet Fujifilm's New X100VI Digital Camera
Tumblr media
While some might argue that a majority of consumer-grade photography nowadays is now mostly achieved through the use of smartphones, it goes without saying that there's still a sizeable population of enthusiasts and professionals who'd still rather get their photography done via a dedicated camera. This has resulted in some rather impressive hardware from the biggest names in the industry, including Fujifilm. With that in mind, the company recently unveiled the launch of the Fujifilm X100VI digital camera, which boasts some pretty cool features. The camera is the latest addition in Fujifilm’s X Series line of digital cameras, and Fujifilm says that the new model offers exceptional image quality, in addition to its compact size and lightweight profile, as well as Fujifilm’s colour reproduction quality.  Camera Design and Features Fujifilm says that the top and bottom of the X100VI's body is built from aluminium which is pressed and machined for sharp edges, while the surface is finely blasted for a smooth texture in addition to the anodised aluminium on its surface. The camera also features an LCD monitor for media viewing and playback which can be stored in a fully flat position, and also comes with touch support. Additionally, the control buttons on the back have been moved to a position that is easy to operate with the right hand. As the sixth-generation model in the X100 Series, the X100VI comes with the new 40.2 megapixel X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, as well as a high-speed X-Processor 5 image processing engine. The camera also includes a newly-developed in-body image stabilisation function, with up to 6.0 stops. Fujifilm says that this is the first time that this feature has been incorporated in an X100 Series product, without a considerable increase in size and weight. Going back to the camera's hardware, the 40-megapixel CMOS 5 HR sensor inside is designed to allow more light to be captured in comparison to its predecessors, as well as native ISO 125 support. The X100VI also comes with a total of 20 "Film Simulation" modes, including a new ‘REALA ACE’ mode with a wide range of different tones. The camera also incorporates an autofocus prediction algorithm for reliable focusing that works even on moving subjects, with subject detection autofocus to accurately track a range of subjects. Fujifilm says that its developed using deep-learning AI technology, allowing it to detect wildlife, vehicles, and more. Other Details The X100VI also includes an ‘Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder’ that lets users switch between the optical viewfinder (OVF) and the electronic viewfinder (EVF). The latter is equipped with a high-resolution OLED panel with around 3.69 million dots for a clear visual user experience. The camera comes with a built-in ‘Electronic Range Finder’ (ERF) function allows a small EVF to be simultaneously displayed on the OVF, which can allow photographers to capture a subject in the OVF and subsequently magnify the in-focus area in the smaller EVF, making it convenient for snapshots and such. For video recording, there's built-in support for 6.2K resolution 30P movie recording that also supports tracking AF function during recording. One of the X100VI's most handy features comes in the form of Frame.io Camera to Cloud support, allowing users to wirelessly connect to an active internet connection, authenticate to Frame.io, and automatically upload photos and videos online right after creation, speeding up a user's workflow process. Pricing and Availability The X100VI will be sold in Black and Silver models, and will be available in the UK from 28 February 2024 from authorised retailers and the Fujifilm House of Photography in London starting at £1,599 including VAT. There will also be a special edition of the camera to celebrate Fujifilm’s 90th anniversary year, which will be available starting on 6th April at £1,934. The limited-edition models are individually numbered and delivered in a special box with strap, soft release button and history cards. The camera body is engraved with the original Fujifilm corporate brand logo from 1934, along with the unique serial number. Read the full article

FV-191 Infantery Fighting Vehicle
Commission made for Nalothisal Following the wake of the first Echerion-Starsect war, the Starsect Republic recognized a dire need in a commonpool armored combat vehicle, as both the strain to logistics of having to supply hundreds of different models of tanks, as well has having to train their crews should one of them fall, was enough to give pause to any military force.

I've had your post up in a separate tab for ages, but life 😮‍💨😅
Just wanted to say I appreciate the in-depth response about RAID (and cosmic rays!) and especially the S.M.A.R.T. article - it'll come in handy as I'm quite complacent 😅 about my personal backups (I think my music files have the most "redundancy" via iPods 🤡)
*I dunno if you'll find it interesting, but the OP's schadenfreude in this Reddit post was amusing to me, at least 😅
https://www.reddit.com/r/Netsuite/s/Bxu6bFnrkS
But tbh, even for the outage referenced, 🤡 I would've been more angsty about the potential hours! of productivity lost (i.e. bc users getting anxious about deadlines, etc.) rather than the potential that our data pre-incident would be corrupted or lost.
Anyways, in any case! Thank you for sharing your tangents! I hope you're doing well!
Ahh what a great honour to be a long standing open tab. Funnily enough I started drafting this yesterday and got distracted from it as well. My original response to how I’m doing was going to be “semi patiently waiting for the Dreamcatcher comeback announcement” but since then we got Fromm messages saying probably not until at least June (noooooo) and now I'm also neck deep in ACC, much to my dismay. I have nothing intelligent to say about batteries, they’re complete mysteries to me as well, but they sure do exist. Unfortunately.
Anyway! I do have things to say about backups. Below the cut 😉
The thing about backups is that you can definitely get way deeper than you need to, I think it’s mostly important to be aware and comfortable with your level of risk. The majority of people don’t hold too much irreplaceable data on their personal computers, and the data that does come under that category often fits within free or cheap tiers of cloud backup providers. Before I had my current setup I used to take a less structured approach to backups. I sorted my data into three categories:
Replaceable, which encompasses things like applications and games which can be re-downloaded from the internet (and, if the original download source were no longer available, this would not be a huge deal);
Irreplaceable but not catastrophic, which encompasses things like game saves, half finished software projects, screenshots I've taken etc; and
Irreplaceable and catastrophic, which encompasses things like legal documents but also select few items from category 2 I'm just very personally attached to.
Category 1 items I had on a single hard drive, category 2 items I copied over selectively to a second every now and then when I got struck with a particularly large wave of paranoia, and category 3 items I did the same but with the additional step of scattering them through various cloud providers as well. Now that I have an actual redundant drive setup in a server I have Kopia running on my personal computer to periodically back up everything that isn’t on my SSD, but I still rely on those external cloud providers for offsite backups.
It’s important to note my setup is ultimately designed with hardware reliability engineering in mind but those aren’t the only factors at play when thinking about backups, especially for enterprises. That Reddit thread is hilarious and I can see exactly where both sides are coming from, it’s a common enough disagreement between people of different departments. Senior software engineers tend to be paranoid old bastards who loathe to trust anyone else's code, which is in direct opposition to so many “software as a service” business models these days. But from a business perspective it makes complete sense to always have your own copy of the data as well, even if it isn’t the copy being used. It’s not just loss of productivity (although I agree that’s the most likely extent of any service down time) but often there are legal obligations on keeping records of certain types of work, and, while I’m pretty sure a company could win a court battle to absolve itself of responsibility in the event of a trusted third party being the one to drop the ball, that’s not the kind of argument you even want to risk getting into when there’s such a simple extra safeguard that could be put in place.
My assessment of the risks of my own backup solution of course has a MUCH lower threshold for striking out controls based on cost. I'm a hobbyist after all, this whole thing does not generate money it only takes it. Most notably I don’t have any full offsite backups, which leaves me vulnerable to near total data loss in the unlikely event of a house fire or someone breaking in and just picking up and leaving with the whole lot. The problem with defending against either of these scenarios with a “proper” 3-2-1 backup strategy is that the first server already cost me enough, I don’t want to go investing almost the same amount into a second one to stick somewhere else! And paying any cloud provider to host terabytes is no friendlier on the wallet.
There’s also the issue of airgaps, which is something enterprises need to think about but I do not have any desire to entertain. If a bad actor were to infiltrate my network in such a way that gave them root access to the server hosting all my data I would have no ability to restore from a ransomware attack. Of course this scenario is very unlikely, I’m already doing a lot to mitigate the risk of a cyber attack because running my services securely doesn’t incur additional costs (just additional time, which does mean I haven’t implemented everything possible, just enough to be comfortable there are no glaring holes), but it’s still something I am conscious of when running something which is exposed (in a small way) to the internet. Cybersecurity is also a whole separate but interesting topic that I’m by no means an expert in but enjoy putting into practise (unlike BATTERIES. God. What is wrong with electrical engineers (I say this with love, I work with many of them)).
In conclusion, coming back to how this relates to my dreamcatcher images blog, you can rest assured that my collection of rare recordings is about as safe as my collection of rare albums is, in that, barring a large scale disaster, they should be safe as long as I want to keep them. Which is hopefully going to be a very long time indeed, because I don’t just enjoy the process I also enjoy the content I’m preserving. But the average person probably doesn’t need to put the same level of effort into archiving — Google and Microsoft’s cloud services have much more redundancy than a home setup could ever achieve and can hold all the essentials (like the backup of the Minecraft server on which you met your oldest friends, for example).
