Happy Birthday musician Michael ‘Mike’ Scott born 14th December 1958 in Edinburgh.
Scott was born and raised in Edinburgh. His father, Allan Scott, left the family when Mike was ten years old, but the two were reunited in 2007.
Scott was interested in music from an early age. At age 12, after the family had moved to Ayr, he began a serious interest in learning guitar. In 1968 he mentions listening to Hank Williams as a “life-changing” experience. The next year, Scott was playing in school bands and formed the band Karma, they were inspired by David Bowie, The Beatles and Bob Dylan.
Playing in a few bands by the time 1981 came he had started the idea of The Waterboys, he admits that he “is” The Waterboys, the lineup has changed through the years but he say that “ there’s no difference between Mike Scott and the Waterboys; they both mean the same thing. They mean myself and whoever are my current travelling musical companions.”
It’s not all about having hits with The Waterboys, Mike is a natural songwriter, as The Waterboys and Mike Scott he has released 15 albums, 4 of the singles reached the top 40.
In mid-1980s, when The Waterboys supported U2 at Wembley Arena in London, Mike Scott’s band seemed all set for the same global status as Bono and Co.
The following year, when their third album, This Is The Sea, and classic single, The Whole Of The Moon, catapulted the band’s “big music” into the Top 10 such success seemed virtually assured. But it was never what he wanted. Under pressure from his record company to produce more stadium-pleasing Waterboys tracks, he retreated to Ireland… and made a folk record. Mike has lived in the Fair city of Dublin for over 12 years and holds a dual nationality, he said in an interview last year   “ ….people have often told me I’m an honouree Irishman, but I feel Scottish. But I’m very proud to live in Ireland. And my children are Irish. So, now I’ve very deep roots here.”
Mike continues to write and tour with the Waterboys, I remember always arguing with a friend that disagreed with me that the Waterboys were (are) a Scottish group, it’s true some of the members of the group have come from Ireland and England as well as the US but Mike Scott, as I said to him and would still say to him IS The Waterboys, The Whole of the Moon is a top class song and the lyric…
“Unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers Trumpets, towers and tenements Wide oceans full of tears Flags, rags ferryboats Scimitars and scarves”
……could only be written by a Scotsman. The song was initially released to a limited success in 1985, it resurfaced again in 1991 and won an Ivor Novello Award as “Best Song Musically and Lyrically” that year and reached number 3. Celtic Women sing a version at their concerts, Jennifer Warnes has also covered it as well as the late great Prince at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club during his 2014 Hit & Run tour. U2 used the song as a “walk out tune” during the Joshua Tree tour.
The Waterboys released their 16th studio album last May, I’ve listened to a few of the tracks, Blackberry Girl for me is the stand out tune, Once were Brothers is a decent track too, it’s a cover of Robbie Robertson song.
The Waterboys  are set for dates next year in Portugal, Netherlands, the Scandinavian countries and Germany, before heading home with gigs at Glasgow Royal  Concert Hall on October 2nd, Edinburgh Usher Hall on the 3rd and back to Glasgow Barrowlands on the 6th, they then head south for a number of dates in England
The song I have chosen this year was  originally from The Waterboys Too Close to Heaven album, a collection of outtakes, alternative versions, and unreleased tracks from The Waterboys' Fisherman's Blues period, released in September 2001. This version is sung in a Scottish accent, it is, in my opinion fucking brilliant. The line  You feel like you want to have your sporran refilled, just gets me.If I was to describe it, I would say it is like The Proclaimers on Acid.
The mountain is steep The ditches are deep The task in hand Is making us weep But here's a promise (I intend to keep / That I mean to keep) Seed it in your mind And say it each night Before you sleep: We will climb higher in time (och!) You've got a head full of trouble And a ship to build (You think you won't make it But you know you will You feel you need your Cup refilled Fill it out of mine We'll drop the defenses Pool our skill / Your heart you're hiding It's making you ill You feel like you want to have your Sporran refilled Well, fill it out of mine Let the soulful water Overspill) And we will climb higher in time
I've been to the bottom I've been on the train I've slept in the gutter With my head in a drain I've been brutally proud I've been mortally shamed But this is not a crime I'm just learning, my friends That it's all in the game And we will climb higher in time (Och!) Climb higher in time Climb higher in time

Highlights:
Tumblr media
CAR @ CHI | Svechnikov snipes one top shelf past Lehner to give the Canes a 2-0 lead in the 2nd
Tumblr media
FLA @ CAR | Pesce shoots his hardest one-timer slap shot to cut the 2-0 deficit in half during the first period
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Points Leaders:
For what it’s worth, Hamilton is currently tied for “second” in the league for +/- (+15), while Mrazek is tied “first” for wins (11)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are our current team leads (G, A, P):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Checking in with the Checkers:
Eetu Luostarinen has officially played 6 games with the Hurricanes after last night’s game in Detroit. If he plays 10 games (CAR @ BOS, December 3rd) he will require waivers before returning to Charlotte. We should expect his return to Charlotte soon, or possibly have him around for an extended period time. Hopefully it’s the first as I highly doubt he would clear waivers.
The Checkers’ current record is 7-7-3-0, giving them 17 points. As of today they sit 7th in their division, 14th in their conference and 24th in the league.
This past week they traded consistent healthy scratch Anthony Louis (1G) to the Texas Stars for future considerations.
The signed Kerby Rychel to the team
They faced divisional rivals Lehigh Valley on Wednesday, November 20th, and Friday, November 22nd. They earned only one point from OT during Friday’s matchup, despite the impressive grit and fight they put up in each game.
Chase Priskie continues to “do what he wants”. On Saturday, November 23rd, he scored the lone goal of the game that secured the win for the Checkers against former, fellow Calder Cup winning coach, Mike Vellucci, who signed with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this past offseason.
Despite their rugged start to the season, the Checkers’ PK% currently sits at the top of the league with 94%, and their PP% coming in at 3rd in the league with 20.8%.
Their current points leader is: Morgan Geekie (5g, 6a, 17p), goal leader: Julien Gauthier (6g, 2a, 8p), assist leader: Roland McKeown (1g, 8a, 9p).
This morning the Checkers’ have released former Penn State alumni Casey Bailey from his PTO. He recorded 3 points (1g, 2a) in 5 games with the team.
Upcoming Checkers Games:
CLE @ CHA | November 26th & 27th ~ PRO @ CHA | November 30th (Teddy Bear Toss) & December 1st (Post-Game Skate)
In The System
Jamieson Rees (F) - Sarnia Sting (OHL) - Currently second on the team in goals, assists and points (12g, 20a, 32p) in only 16 games.
Ryan Suzuki (F) - Barrie Colts (OHL) - Currently has 17 points in 13 games.

Camila Cabello: Pap Pics and Stunting, a Year in Review
This chronicles most (if not all) of the instances where Camila was publicly papped from January 2018 - February 2019 (time of publication). This does not include any fan pictures or those from social media (i.e. Instagram, Twitter, etc.).
Prior to 2018, Camila has only truly been papped a handful of times. However, the frequency in which she has been snapped has grown significantly compared to the previous 6 years (2012-17) she has been in the industry.
(Note: The pap pics in 2018 began to surface in February, weeks after her debut album was released).
* = Days CC and MH are photographed together.
Feb 1st, 2018: Tokyo, Japan (Tokyo Narita Airport). Article 1.

These were the first public pictures of CC and MH together, they were published exclusively by E!News and featured them on a beach in Cabo.
Tumblr media
The photos were snapped with photo credits given to Backgrid, a known celebrity pap agency or "celebrity news agency" as they call themselves. Backgrid has also snapped pictures of a number of other celebrities in Cabo in 2018 as well including Scott Disick, Guiliana Rancic, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ciara, and Heidi Klum which were all published in gossip magazines/sites (i.e. US Weekly, OK, & E!News).
Feb. 15th, 2018: London, UK. Article 3.

In fact, in order to allow celebrities and business professionals to evade paps, avoid public terminals, and make better use of their time LAX has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in a private terminal as well as VIP services to ensure privacy and efficiency (Source 1: LAX Private Terminal, Source 2: United Airlines partners with LAX private terminal, Source 3: Delta provides anti-pap VIP service, Source 4: American Airlines partners with private helicopter service Flyblade).

Photos of CC were taken during a shoot for a Mastercard commercial CC was filming. Prior to the shoot CC and MH were snapped strolling to a breakfast date in the DailyMail article although no photos of the date were presented in the article. Both Just Jared/Just Jared Jr. articles omitted details or photos of CC and MH together although the photos within the articles did mention the commerical she was filming and show moments from the shoot.
(This photo is the 1/2 featured with MH which is work related.)

Photo Credits: Backgrid USA/BackGrid (JustJared, JustJaredJr; DailyMail; HollywoodLife); X17online.
CC and MH snapped at LAX only 2 days after the 2019 Grammys.
Note: In the video Sinu can be seen coming out of the vehicle with CC and MH at the airport, but immediately circles to the far left away from CC, MH, and their security guard opting to walk behind 2 paps and out of frame of the pictures instead.
Tumblr media
The Rundown:
Total photo credits (21): Backgrid (16), X17online (4; first airport photos of CC and MH, 4 airport videos, all at LAX), SplashNews/SplashNewsOnline (3), Bauer-Griffin (2), Getty Images, starflyz, GC Images, The Image Direct, Eammon and James Clarke, and INSTAR.
Backgrid was credited for 16/21 of the days CC was papped from 2018 - February 2019.
The 5 days Backgrid was not given credit for any photos occurred between February 1st, 2018 - June 8th, 2018, from then through February 2019 Backgrid has had photo credits on every day CC has been papped.
7/21 of the days CC was photographed were in airports, of those 5/7 occurred at LAX. (Note: Despite frequent travels to NYC and Miami CC has not been papped once in 2018 flying into or out of JFK, LaGuardia, or MIA. In fact, the last time she appears to have been papped at any of these airports was LaGuardia in December 2014 with Dinah.)
Backgrid was the only ones who got pictures of CC 11/21 of the days and of those 5/11 included MH.
Backgrid was also given credit for 8/9 of the couple photos.
Also worth mentioning: 10/21 days CC was seen with a family member. 5/10 of those days also included MH, 4 were from June 25th, 2018 - October 2nd, 2018 and were the only 4 days CC was papped during that time period.
The news sites which consistently publish photos are the Daily Mail and Just Jared/Just Jared Jr with special recognition to E!News, rarely do other sites publish any photos.
Bonus link: Taylor Swift has also given exclusives to certain pap agencies for her PR relationships/bearding stunts. Namely The Image Direct for Hiddleston and Backgrid currently with Alwyn. Worth noting that CC and Taylor are friends and former tour mates.

24H competition 38th edition – culturEart
The heart of culture will be the epicenter of all emotions, this Sacred place of wisdom and knowledge that feeds a people and moves them forward. Here minds are opened, and the reason is challenged. Feeling takes place and takes us to places we didn’t know existed. We will be less reason and more emotion and, therefore, more human.
We will have the ability to dream and unveil the hidden. Learning that 1 + 1 may not be two and a square may not be just a square. Knowledge through culture has an abstract dimension that cannot be explained, but that is felt. Art is born, and the heartbeats!

fire
Fire: extravagant, egocentric, impulsive, strong, irresponsible and adventurous. One of the 4 elements of nature and the greatest achievement of the human being, which allowed the survival of the species. With fire Man developed the protection, the comfort of cold nights, the search for light and discovered the cooked food. He controlled it for his own benefit, changed survival habits in a dramatic way, and nowadays, fire can be a symbol of destruction and danger, giving it a negative connotation, or a symbol of rebirth and renewal of forces divine. Fire can be heaven or hell, peace or war, a small ou big flame. One thing is certain, whoever plays with it can get burned.

24h competition 20th edition – biomimetic
FRAMEWORK
What does nature have to teach us? Do we need to perceive it better by copying it in search of perfection, or simply to understand the rules that govern it? Nature is multidisciplinary and everything seems to work effortlessly, because it is not designed to be perfect, but functional, non-toxic, adaptable and “alive” in form or function. Biomimetic is a new movement created by spontaneity and perpetuated by the need to create sustainability solutions. It is up to the human being to discover the powers and, with the right dose of utopia, to make it the best way to respect the nature of which we are all a part. Making it happen is the master key of these new doors ahead …
biomimetic All living forms present in nature carry mathematical formulas and quantifications. The interpretation of these forms can be the great achievement for architecture that, intelligently, should translate them into solutions and needs in a sustainable and functional strategy. Natural examples are biological inspirations of efficiency and aesthetic / functional balance. The way of looking at forms can finally awaken to the simplicity of what more complex exists on the face of the earth: life itself.
PROGRAM
collective housing
Objective: In this exercise we propose that nature be your inspiration. It is intended that you apply natural systems in the conceptual process of your project. More than simple patterns or coatings, you must understand these systems and apply them in your constructive process. We want that you see in the nature a solution for this building. Inspired by the principles of biomimetics, we challenge you to design a collective housing building.
Program: – You must define the population and the number of flats for your building. – You should think other spaces like services, shops, restaurants or others. – Localization: not defined – Areas: not defined
The panel must have a descriptive text of the proposal (English), concept, idea, etc. Scale – Appropriate to the submitted elements
RESULTS 1st Place – ID0001070 – Team: Maël Barbe, Clémentine Huck; City: Clermont-Ferrand; Country: France “Perceiving the desert as an environment suitable for human occupation in an increasingly denser world, Ecosystem of Desert finds inspiration in natural behaviors rather than natural forms, taking advantage of how animal and vegetal species deal with harsh conditions to create an auspicious context to human settlement. Cacti, termites and beetles are seen as natural models to, respectively, protecting living spaces from direct sun, providing air circulation and holding humidity – the project thus reflects not their appearances, but instead their processes, that is, the way they adapt to their own surroundings. ” Romullo Fontenelle, arq.
“The project deals with our nowadays Anthropocene era, climate change, and global population increase. Despite the UN prospects of 75% of the population will be living in urban settlements in 2050, the proposal takes advantage of an undesired territory to be colonized: the desert. A potential anchor for a future counterpoint of rural strategical development.
The structure proposed is a wise underground construction inspired in how live can developed strategies to survive in such extreme conditions. The beautiful drawing and poetical expression of the idea confronts with the simplicity of a telluric constructive act expressed in a symbolic object.” Jin Taira, arq.
“The proposal conceptualizes complex natural systems into clear design ideas, to give form to a collective housing oasis in the dessert. By taking into consideration contemporary issues to society such as over population, it successfully analyses and deploys adaptability to inhabited areas. ” Mario Vahos, arq.
“This project addresses a dystopian future where the climate and/or growth of the human population forces us to live in harsh desert conditions.
For such conditions, this entry has found some greats examples from nature in how to cope with overheating, unfertile land and water shortage. The design however needs to be further developed to make this convincing as architecture, even though the presentation is very nice.” Gerhard Linder, arq.
“The ‘Ecosystem of Desert’ is most creative and innovative design which presents clear solution and direction with very poetic but powerful visual representation. The suggestive section and simple diagrams show how the new ecosystem performs as collective housing.” Chang Kyu Lee, arq.
2nd Place – ID000480 – Team: Nahid Akram; City: California; Country: United States “Polyp – a symbio-mimetic module creates living spaces in probably one of the most intricate urban contexts in contemporary world: war-torn cities. Taking advantage of the enormous amount of rubble left by the conflicts and finding inspiration in the “mutually beneficial relationship between algae and modern corals”, the project is based on the idea of converting debris into architecture – what in a broader sense refers to cyclical processes found in nature in which living species dye, are transformed into mineral and organic substances, to be combined again into new forms of life in a continuous cycle. ” Romullo Fontenelle, arq.
“The project has a double direction. An inspirational study of polyps and the development of a collective dwelling created of prefab modules. A proper solution to provide shelter for people subject of impact hazards. Despite the interest of both ideas, and the potential benefit to human race, is unclear the impact influence of the polyp in the final formal configuration of the unit module typology or the resultant unit- conglomerate block in patio configuration. Habitat, designed by architect Moshe Safdie in 1967 was considered a potential project for the future, but the path proposed was only partially adopted. Maybe, our critical present will bring again the revival of high-density and compact prefab construction systems.”Jin Taira, arq.
“The proposal provides an innovative solution to the rebuilding of war-torn areas by the use of modular units as shelters and working areas. The reproduction of this rational building unit by the re-use of materials on-site responds to the precarious situation of war, and gives an alternative solution to temporary housing systems. ” Mario Vahos, arq.
““Polyp” addresses one of the imminent global challenges, how to rapid provide shelter and rebuild parts of civilization that has been hit by disaster. Using the symbioses between coral and algae as inspiration for the reuse and remaking of building ruins, is both very creative and sustainable, regardless of the realism. This project also manages to go beyond pure idea, to the design of the single units. This design allows adding parts to the units to adopt to changing needs, thus making the design even more flexible. Finally, all the units add up to a large complex, a building block that has a distinctive expression and architecture which could be a part of the urban fabric. The presentation is precise and beautiful, a contrast to the horrors this concept emerged from. ” Gerhard Linder, arq.
“The modular and recycling system drives this proposal energetic and effective idea to illustrate competition theme, ‘Biomimetic’. The reproduction of processing unit not only creates a new image of human habitants, but also allows human survive in nutrient-poor environments. ” Chang Kyu Lee, arq.
3rd Place – ID0001110 – Team: Jack Francis, Rebecca Beer, Andrew Waller; City: Portsmouth; Country: United Kingdom “In a more literal way than the two other winners, the project A Living Resilience finds in the pinecone and its particular form and natural behavior the inspirations to design a building capable to protect its own inner spaces from the cold night and assure maximum solar gain during the day. A series of moving scales closes and opens according to the time of the day, creating adequate living spaces for its inhabitants in harsh environments – more and more common in an out of balance world.” Romullo Fontenelle, arq.
“As the projects before, the proposal, consequently with nowadays global climate change condition, supports the philosophy of intervention in the sensitive concept of resilience. Maybe the most formally biomimetic project of the three awarded ones, structures a collective housing and green tower based in the fibonacci geometry to produce a gigantic pinecone. The responsive façade solution follows an important direction in current innovative technology construction that has being successfully built in extreme climates as the Al Bahar Towers in Abu Dhabi (Aedas, 2012).” Jin Taira, arq.
“The proposal successfully interprets the need for adaptable and dynamic structures that can respond to natural conditions. It studies the Fibonacci sequence and uses the shape of a pinecone as inspiration to the design of a dynamic building structure, which responds and blends with its surroundings. By adapting its shape, it optimizes energy gains and reduces the need for external sources of energy. ” Mario Vahos, arq.
“”Organic” suggests the use of Chitin as the main building component. Chitin is a strong biopolymer found in crabs and shellfish. The material is 100% recyclable and given the right tools it could be used for 3D printing. The idea of a crane size 3D printer is seductive. The building design is interesting and shows potential, but need to be further developed. The presentation however is convincing.” Gerhard Linder, arq.
“Interesting Octagonal floor layout and composition. The dynamic mechanism makes the proposal very unique concept and solution which starts from Pinecone and Fibonacci numbers to growth of human life. The ‘A Living Resilience’ is able to change and adapt through interacting with the environment.” Chang Kyu Lee, arq.

Florida Gators Star Keyontae Johnson In Critical But Stable Condition In Medically Induced Coma + Florida Postpones Upcoming Game
Tumblr media
Florida Gators star Keyontae Johnson is currently in critical, but stable condition as doctor’s put him in a medically induced coma after he collapsed on the court during a game over the weekend. His grandfather has provided an update on his condition. Find out inside…
Prayers up for Florida Gators player Keyontae Johnson.
The 21-year-old star forward was placed in a medically induced coma after collapsing on the court during last Saturday’s game against the Florida State Seminoles, according to Keyontae's grandfather, Larry DeJarnett.
During a phone interview with USA Today, Keyontae’s grandfather said his grandson - a 6-foot-5, 231-pound small forward - had been transported to a hospital in Gainesville, Florida after receiving his initial treatment in Tallahassee, FL. He’s in critical, but stable condition and doctors hope to bring him out of the coma soon.
"They’re just not sure," Mr. DeJarnett told USA Today. "He may have had activity in the brain, so they induced the coma. They put him on medication to keep him sedated."
Keyontae was taken off the court on a stretcher after he collapsed mid-court as the Gators were coming out of a timeout just minutes into Saturday's 83–71 loss to the Seminoles.
WARNING! This could be triggering for some:

— Florida Gators Men’s Basketball (@GatorsMBK) December 14, 2020
The Florida Gators did not practice yesterday (Dec. 14th) and that the organization has postponed its men's basketball game Wednesday against North Florida after Keyontae’s hospitalization.
Wednesday’s game vs. North Florida has been postponed with a makeup date to be determined.

As of right now, it’s unclear what caused Keyontae to collapse. Over the summer, it was reported he tested positive for COVID-19. It’s unclear if his condition is related to him contracting the virus. It is quite possible, though, that he developed a heart condition due to the disease.
IF Keyontae Johnson's sudden collapse turns out to be a side-effect from his previous COVID diagnosis, it will (hopefully) turn college sports on its head. B/c the ppl who want kids to keep playing—for free & w/o any guarantees—keep saying they're young & healthy & will be fine.
— Britni Danielle (@BritniDWrites) December 12, 2020
I wrote something over at The Rebound today.
Why isn't Keyontae Johnson the single biggest story in sports? A 21-year old All-American is in a hospital bed, in critical condition, after collapsing during a game. He had COVID in June.

Prayers to the family and hoping for a speedy recovery!

The band’s tour announcement follows the debut of their most recent single, “Memories”(222 Records/ Interscope Records).  The release of “Memories” marks the first new music from the Los Angeles band since the release of their global anthem “Girls Like You.” Produced by Adam Levine and The Monsters & Strangerz and Executive Produced by Jacob “J Kash” Hindlin, “Memories” marks a moment of creative and personal progression for the musicians. The minimalist ballad starkly pairs a lilting clean guitar with chantable and evocative lyrics from Levine. In addition to representing another sonic side, it tackles uncharted subject matter for the group— namely loss—but from a different angle.
Following its release, “Memories” quickly claimed Maroon 5’s 22nd appearance on Billboard Hot 100’s Top 40. The track is currently holding at peak position #4 on Billboard Hot 100 chart, their 10th Top 5, and their 12th Top 10 this decade; that includes at least one new song sent into the Top 10 each year since 2011. The track just reached #1 on Billboard Hot AC chart, their 14th #1 which is the most by any act. The David Dobkin directed music video has garnered over 185 million views on Youtube; pushing their video catalog to 12 BILLION views across all official channels on YouTube.

The Royal Family of Avalor
Since King Misael Flores in 1715, the Flores family has been the royal family of Avalor. Prior to 1913, women could not ascend to rule at all, and it wasn’t until the 1970s that the law allowed women to inherit the throne whether or not they had a younger male sibling.
Here are the members of the Flores family directly related to Crown Princess Elena and Princess Isabel. Not including the siblings and various nieces of nephews of (former) King Francisco.
(former Queen) The Honorable Lady Luisa Miriam Ibáñez Bonilla y Flores - 74 - b. May 8, 1944 - Ivonne Coll
(former King) The Honorable Lord Francisco Manuel Flores Villalobos - 78 - September 9 1940
Luisa Miriam Ibáñez Bonilla was born to a noble family in May of 1945, in the midst of WWII. Throughout her entire life, she was on the royal family’s radar as a possible spouse for one of King Diego II and Queen Genoveva’s four sons. Even after her elder brother’s failed courtship with the older sister of the four princes, Princess Elisa Begoña, Luisa was still consistently invited to social events in honor of Crown Prince Francisco Manuel (four years her senior), Prince Perseo Natal (one year her senior), and Princess Judit Delfina (her same age). Every Avaloran noble knew that consistent invites to events where the royal children were expected to be front and center meant you were in the running to be an acceptable mate.
When it came time to plan the young noblewoman’s quinces, she invited the princes and princesses - as all nobles did - but expected them not to show up. Usually they didn’t. Only for their friends, and Luisa wasn’t a friend. She was only invited to the palace along with her parents, never personally by Princess Judit (whom she was supposed to be convincing to be her friend) or the Princes Francisco or Perseo (either of whom she was meant to be courting). The shock of her life was when Prince Francisco practically glided into the party, bowed to the birthday girl, and offered his hand to dance.
“Mother thought we should be seen mingling more,” he’d whispered in her ear as they danced. That made Luisa want to smash her heel on the prince’s toes. “And of all the quince invites I’ve gotten, the idea of going to yours didn’t make me want to wretch.”
That made Luisa pause. “Oh?”
“Mm. You are at least remotely interesting; I sometimes look forward to your turn to speak to me at balls.”
“Remotely?” She quirked up an eyebrow as he spun her away from him, and upon the spin back “Sometimes?”
The prince hummed and his painted on PR smile almost seemed genuine when he looked down at the rather short teenager. “Very interesting. Every time.” With that, he released her to dance with the rest of her guests and he made his leave from the party shortly after.
For the next two years after that, Luisa and Francisco danced at least once at balls, sneaked in occasional conversations, and stole glances across the room. He was four years her senior, so Luisa was always quite positive he was messing with her for laughs but she enjoyed the attention anyway. In fact, when he glided up to her at his twenty-first birthday ball and promptly announced that he was going to tell his father to ask her parents if he could court her, Luisa snorted and sipped from her champagne flute, sneakily giving him a rather rude one-fingered salute.
“Don’t joke like that, Your Highness. The other Ladies may hear and be jealous for no reason.” Really, his game had gone too far. Can’t he tell when a stupid girl has a crush on him?
“Lu, what? No, you don’t get it.” God, did Francisco actually look...wounded? “I am interested in courting you. And I wanted to tell you I was formally requesting a courtship before I did it. To give you a chance to say ‘no’ if you’re against it.”
She’d learned him well enough to know he wasn’t bullshitting. Which was unbelieavble. “You hardly know me, Your Highness. We mostly talk about you and how annoying other noble youth are when we dance together. We can’t be seen alone together too long unless we are dancing, it would make rumors fly. We’ve already spoken too long, alone, in front of too many eyes as is.”
“Courting you will give me an excuse to get to know you better, my lady.”
Luisa had only rolled her eyes at the Crown Prince and walked away with her champagne.
Her father told her the following evening at dinner that he had accepted the Prince’s request to court her, sent to him by the King, official seal and everything. Their first chaperoned date would be the following Tuesday, a late afternoon stroll in the palace gardens.
On July 9th, 1962, Luisa and Francisco were married at eighteen and twenty-one, after nine and a half months’ courtship. Their first child, the first of two daughters, was born in October of 1963.
Their two daughters were:
(former Crown) Princess Cristina Bianca  Ibáñez Flores - 28 at death in 1992 - b. October 18, 1963 - d. April 20, 1992 - Kiely Sanchez (eventual Crown) Princess Lucia Despina Ibáñez Flores - 36 at death in 2010 - b. June 12, 1973 - d. March 23, 2010 - Gaby Moreno
Princess Cristina was born on October 18, 1963. She was not given the title of Crown Princess until 1973, when her parents abolished the law that prohibited princesses from inheriting the throne if they had a little brother. From 1973 to early 1983, Cristina was the Crown Princess of Avalor. However, after she fell in love with a common man from Cuba she met in university while he was studying abroad in Avalor, Cristina was determined to marry him. Which meant abdicating due to a law prohibiting the Crown Prince or Princess from marrying outside of the nobility.
That man was:
- Oscar Alejandro Peñalosa Sales - 30 at death in 1992 - b. January 7 1962 - d. April 20, 1992 - Carlos Leon
They had one son together, born in 1984.
- Esteban Francisco Peñalosa Flores - 33 - born December 19, 1984 - Oscar Isaac
Esteban is older than Crown Princess Elena by ten years. The cousins are quite close despite their age difference. He is currently risking his life by pretending to have betrayed his family and working for Shuriki, while feeding information to pro-crown militias and to Elena when possible.
On April 20th, 1992, Princess Cristina and her husband were killed in a plane crash in the Avaloran mountains. The following year, Crown Princess Lucia married the man she’d been steadily courting for the last three years.
- (former Duke) King Raul Leandro Castillo Maradona - 39 at death in 2010 - b. August 4, 1969 - d. March 23, 2010 - Ricky Martin
Lucia and Raul were married May 14th, 1993. The following year, their first daughter Princess Elena was born on November 15, 1994. Francisco and Luisa stepped down from rule in March of 1997, making Crown Princess Lucia and Prince Raul the leaders of Avalor, and two year old Princess Elena the Crown Princess.
Raul and Lucia abolished the law that prohibited Princess Cristina was keeping the throne and marrying her husband in 1998. In 2001, Princess Isabel was born. And in 2005, they abolished the mandatory eighteen month military service for citizens law, though both of them participated as it was law when they were of draft age for the Avaloran Military.
They ruled from 1997 to their assassinations in Venezuela on February 19, 2010. Their daughter, Crown Princess Elena, ruled with a Grand Council from February 19th 2010 to her deposing on September 29, 2015.

Relist Watch
John Elwood reviews Monday’s relists.
Even as the world grows more topsy-turvy by the minute, the Supreme Court’s relists this week are heavily a status quo affair. The gun cases are still there. The qualified immunity cases are still there. And the two ancient serial relists Andrus v. Texas and United States v. California inexplicably shuffle back for yet another curtain call this week, a trip they’ve been making almost weekly since November 2019 and January 2020, respectively.
If we needed any further proof that we’re living in a dystopian future, even the relists this week reflect the basic fact of life Beyond Thunderdome: Two cases enter, one case leaves. The one case leaving is Jarchow v. State Bar of Wisconsin, 19-831, which involved a First Amendment challenge to mandatory bar membership and dues. The court denied review, but Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by Justice Neil Gorsuch, dissented to say that the court’s recent First Amendment jurisprudence has undercut the legal basis for upholding mandatory bar membership.
Now on to the two cases entering. The first is Niz-Chavez v. Barr, 19-863. The attorney general can cancel removal of a nonpermanent resident who has 10 years of continuous presence in the United States, and of a permanent resident who has seven years of continuous residence here. Under the “stop-time rule,” the government can end those periods of continuous residence by serving “a notice to appear,” which provides “written notice … specifying” specific information related to the initiation of a removal proceeding. This case presents the question whether a notice sufficient to trigger the stop-time rule must itself include all the requisite information, or whether the government can furnish that information over the course of many documents and on the timetable of its choosing. The government’s brief in opposition includes those words every petitioner loves to read: “[A] circuit conflict currently exists on the question presented.” Regrettably for Agusto Niz-Chavez, that concession is followed by the statements that “the circuits may resolve that conflict” and “the question presented is not outcome-determinative.” Those reflect an advocacy challenge for petitioners. But once the government concedes a circuit split, it is often possible to discredit government claims that the split will resolve itself and that the case is not a good vehicle for addressing the conflict.
The second new case is a bit unusual, in that the Supreme Court has already denied certiorari. Hanks v. United States, 19-7732, is on rehearing of the court’s decision not to grant review. The original petition involved whether 18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(1), which criminalizes the use of a firearm during a “crime of violence” (here, a bank robbery), can be violated by unintentionally intimidating a victim through verbal demands or the passing of a demand note rather than the use or threatened use of physical force. After the court denied review, Jerad Hanks sought rehearing, arguing that the Supreme Court had requested that the government file a response to his co-defendant’s petition raising similar claims, so the court should consider the cases together. Now the court appears to be doing exactly that with the co-defendant’s case, which was already set to be considered at this Thursday’s conference.
That’s all for this week. Until next week, stay safe!
New Relists
Niz-Chavez v. Barr, 19-863 Issue: Whether, to serve notice in accordance with 8 U.S.C. § 1229(a) and trigger the stop-time rule, the government must serve a specific document that includes all the information identified in Section 1229(a), or whether the government can serve that information over the course of as many documents and as much time as it chooses. (relisted after the May 28 conference)
Hanks v. United States, 19-7732 Issues: (1) Whether 18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(1), which criminalizes the use of a firearm during a “crime of violence” – in this case, the federal bank-robbery statute, 18 U.S.C. § 2113 –may be violated by unintentionally intimidating a victim through verbal demands or the passing of a demand note rather than the use or threatened use of physical force, and whether the definition of the term “crime of violence” cabined in 18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(3)(A) is unconstitutionally vague on its face and unconstitutionally vague under the rule of lenity; and (2) whether there is currently a conflict among the U.S. courts of appeals and an ambiguity in the law regarding the federal statutory definition of the term “crime of violence,” and a conflict between the holdings of some circuits, specifically the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, and the Supreme Court’s previous holdings regarding the constitutional viability of the current definition of the term “crime of violence” in Section 924(c) and related federal statutes. (relisted after the May 28 conference)
Returning Relists
Andrus v. Texas, 18-9674 Issue: Whether the standard for assessing ineffective assistance of counsel claims, announced in Strickland v. Washington, fails to protect the Sixth Amendment right to a fair trial and the 14th Amendment right to due process when, in death-penalty cases involving flagrantly deficient performance, courts can deny relief following a truncated “no prejudice” analysis that does not account for the evidence amassed in a habeas proceeding and relies on a trial record shaped by trial counsel’s ineffective representation. (rescheduled before the November 1, 2019, and November 8, 2019, conferences; relisted after the November 15, 2019, November 22, 2019, December 6, 2019, December 13, 2019, January 10, January 17, January 24, February 21, February 28, March 6, March 20, March 27, April 3, April 17, April 24, May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
United States v. California, 19-532 Issue: Whether provisions of California law that, with certain limited exceptions, prohibit state law-enforcement officials from providing federal immigration authorities with release dates and other information about individuals subject to federal immigration enforcement, and restrict the transfer of aliens in state custody to federal immigration custody, are preempted by federal law or barred by intergovernmental immunity. (relisted after the January 10, January 17, March 6, March 20, March 27, April 3, April 17, April 24, May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Mance v. Barr, 18-663 Issue: Whether prohibiting interstate handgun sales, facially or as applied to consumers whose home jurisdictions authorize such transactions, violates the Second Amendment and the equal protection component of the Fifth Amendment’s due process clause. (relisted after the May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Rogers v. Grewal, 18-824 Issues: (1) Whether the Second Amendment protects the right to carry a firearm outside the home for self-defense; and (2) whether the government may deny categorically the exercise of the right to carry a firearm outside the home to typical law-abiding citizens by conditioning the exercise of the right on a showing of a special need to carry a firearm. (relisted after the May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Pena v. Horan, 18-843 Issue: Whether California’s Unsafe Handgun Act violates the Second Amendment by banning handguns of the kind in common use for traditional lawful purposes. (relisted after the May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Gould v. Lipson, 18-1272 Issues: (1) Whether the Second Amendment protects the right to carry a firearm outside the home for self-defense and (2) whether the government may deny categorically the exercise of the right to carry a firearm outside the home to typical law-abiding citizens by conditioning the exercise of the right on a showing of a special need to carry a firearm. (relisted after the May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Cheeseman v. Polillo, 19-27 Issue: Whether states can limit the ability to bear handguns outside the home to only those found to have a sufficiently heightened “need” for self-protection. (relisted after the May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Ciolek v. New Jersey, 19-114 Issue: Whether the legislative requirement of “justifiable need,” which, as defined, does not include general self-defense, for a permit to carry a handgun in public violates the Second Amendment. (relisted after the May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Worman v. Healey, 19-404 Issue: Whether Massachusetts’ ban on the possession of firearms and ammunition magazines for lawful purposes unconstitutionally infringes the individual right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment. (relisted after the May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Malpasso v. Pallozzi, 19-423 Issue: In a challenge to Maryland’s handgun carry-permit scheme, whether the Second Amendment protects the right to carry handguns outside the home for self-defense. (relisted after the May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Culp v. Raoul, 19-487 Issue: Whether the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms requires Illinois to allow qualified nonresidents to apply for an Illinois concealed-carry license. (relisted after the May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Wilson v. Cook County, 19-704 Issues: (1) Whether the Second Amendment allows a local government to prohibit law-abiding residents from possessing and protecting themselves and their families with a class of rifles and ammunition magazines that are “in common use at [this] time” and are not “dangerous and unusual”; and (2) whether the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit’s method of analyzing Second Amendment issues – a three-part test that asks whether a regulation bans (a) weapons that were common at the time of ratification or (b) those that have some reasonable relationship to the preservation or efficiency of a well-regulated militia and (c) whether law-abiding citizens retain adequate means of self-defense – is consistent with the Supreme Court’s holding in District of Columbia v. Heller. (relisted after the May 1, May 15, May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Brennan v. Dawson, 18-913 Issue: Whether a police officer may reasonably rely on a narrow exception to a specific and clearly established right to shield him from civil liability when his conduct far exceeds the limits of that exception. (relisted after the May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Dawson v. Brennan, 18-1078 Issue: Whether the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit misapplied the Supreme Court’s authority and created a conflict among the U.S. courts of appeals by holding that a law enforcement officer violates the Fourth Amendment by entering the rear curtilage of a home in attempting to gain the resident’s compliance with his probation condition. (relisted after the May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Baxter v. Bracey, 18-1287 Issues: (1) Whether binding authority holding that a police officer violates the Fourth Amendment when he uses a police dog to apprehend a suspect who has surrendered by lying down on the ground “clearly establish[es]” that it is likewise unconstitutional to use a police dog on a suspect who has surrendered by sitting on the ground with his hands up; and (2) whether the judge-made doctrine of qualified immunity, which cannot be justified by reference to the text of 42 U.S.C. § 1983 or the relevant common law background, and which has been shown not to serve its intended policy goals, should be narrowed or abolished. (relisted after the May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Anderson v. City of Minneapolis, Minnesota, 19-656 Issues: (1) Whether the burden of persuasion in qualified immunity cases should be, in part or entirely, on the plaintiff, as held by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit in this case and by the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th Circuits, or whether it should be placed on the defendant, as held by the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 9th and District of Columbia Circuits; (2) whether, under the state-created-danger doctrine, due process is violated when first responders fail to provide any treatment to a person suffering from severe hypothermia, and instead erroneously declare him dead; and (3) whether the 8th Circuit erred in dismissing this state-created-danger case on qualified immunity grounds. (relisted after the May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Zadeh v. Robinson, 19-676 Issue: Whether the Supreme Court should recalibrate or reverse the doctrine of qualified immunity. (relisted after the May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Corbitt v. Vickers, 19-679 Issues: (1) Whether qualified immunity is an affirmative defense (placing the burden on the defendant to raise and prove it) or a pleading requirement (placing the burden on a plaintiff to plead its absence); and (2) whether the Supreme Court should recalibrate or reverse the doctrine of qualified immunity. (relisted after the May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Hunter v. Cole, 19-753 Issues: (1) Whether, if the barrel of a gun is not yet pointed directly at an officer, clearly established federal law prohibits police officers from firing to stop a person armed with a firearm from moving a deadly weapon toward an officer if the officer has not both shouted a warning and waited to determine whether the imminent threat to life has subsided after the warning; and (2) whether a police officer who inaccurately reports his perceptions of events during a dynamic shooting encounter violates clearly established rights under the 14th Amendment. (relisted after the May 21 and May 28 conferences)
West v. Winfield, 19-899 Issue: Whether an officer who has consent to “get inside” a house but instead destroys it from the outside is entitled to qualified immunity in the absence of precisely factually on-point case law. (relisted after the May 21 and May 28 conferences)
Mason v. Faul, 19-7790 Issues: (1) Whether a finding of “objectively unreasonable excessive force” can be squared with a finding of qualified immunity under the facts and circumstances of this case, including whether determinations of the trial court, as affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, resulted in an incorrect analysis of the qualified immunity issue; and (2) whether the 5th Circuit’s determination can be reconciled with other courts’. (relisted after the May 21 and May 28 conferences)

American Football to Release Demos
American Football will release Year One Demos on December 14th. The press release can be found below, and pre-orders are now up. American Football’s seminal eponymous debut LP will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its unassuming release tomorrow on September 14th. Polyvinyl Record Co. marks the occasion with the announcement of a collection of newly mastered and previously unreleased instrumental demos. Year One Demos will be released on 12” vinyl and digitally on December 13th, and is available for pre-order now (https://plyvnyl.co/af-20). “American Football struck an emotional chord,” wrote Pitchfork in their “Best New Reissue” review of the LP. Noisey deemed the album “one of the most influential records of its time.” The LP has found its way on to a myriad of best of genre lists, and in a more modern gauge of popularity and impact, seen its album cover art become iconic, and songs (“Never Meant” in particular) transformed into popular memes on twitter, reddit and music message boards. Yet as is well known to anyone who has followed the band’s revival as a recording and live act over the past half-decade, American Football’s current status as a foundational entry into the indie rock canon was likely the furthest thought from the band’s or Polyvinyl’s minds when it was released, or for that matter in the years that followed. “We finished the whole thing in a week and handed Matt Lunsford the mastered tapes and broke up,” recalls Steve Holmes in an interview with Noisey on the album’s oral history. “No press, no record release show, no supporting tour or anything.” “American Football was never intended to be a real band,” Holmes writes in the liner notes for Year One Demos. “The band was our creative outlet, and gave us something to do outside of schoolwork. Not to say that we didn’t take the music seriously. We spent an enormous amount of time crafting and arranging these little songs, but we had zero interest in a ‘music career’.” The recordings found on Year One Demos are a glimpse back at that inauspicious time, and according to Steve Lamos who recently re-discovered the original tape (labeled with the date May 31, 1997), is the first proper set of demos the band ever made. “My dad ‘recorded’ this in the basement of the house I grew up in,” says Lamos. “As far as I can recall, he set up two vocal mics, at 90-degree angles, set the levels, showed me how to turn the Roberts two-track to ‘record,’ and then went upstairs while we played.” Lamos last remembers coming across and listening to the demos in the mid-2000s, nearly a decade before American Football’s eventual reunion. He hadn’t thought about the recordings since until the approach of the LP1s 20 year anniversary reminded him of their existence. American Football will play Riot Fest in Chicago this weekend on Sunday 9/15, following gigs in Kansas City and St. Louis tonight and Saturday night respectively. The band are also excited to announce an intimate three night stand at Schubas Tavern, with shows on December 29th, 30th, and culminating on New Years Eve. The shows will coincide with the legendary Chicago venue’s 30th anniversary. All upcoming tour dates are listed below. Track Listing * Five Silent Miles (Demo) * Song #1 / Song #2 (Demo) * The Summer Ends (Demo) * For Sure (Demo) --- Please consider supporting us so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/news/american-football-to-release-demos/

California Jurisdictions Open For Cannabis Retail
POSTED BY MARGOLIN & LAWRENCE ON JANUARY 8, 2019
Despite all the talk about cannabis retail in the news, it can be difficult to tell exactly when and where it’s possible for businesses to apply for a cannabis retail license. Here are a few jurisdictions where applications for cannabis retail are either currently open or planned to open in the near future.
Riverside County
Per the county planning department, Riverside is planning to give out a maximum of 19 retail licenses. While no date is currently set, the proposal process is scheduled to begin later this year.
Santa Barbara County
County is currently accepting cannabis permit applications. Storefront retail permits are limited to eight countywide, with no more than two in any supervisorial district.
Cathedral City
Applications for retail businesses are currently open, with an application form available on the city website.
City of Chula Vista
The city’s application for cannabis businesses will open on January 14th and remain open until the 18th (for Storefront Retail, Non-Storefront Retail, and Cultivation businesses) and the 25th (for Manufacturing, Distribution, and Testing Laboratory businesses.)
City of Desert Hot Springs
Conditional use permits for cannabis activities, including Cannabis Sale Facilities, are available on the city’s website.
City of Goleta
Goleta is currently accepting applications for up to 15 total storefront retail businesses.
City of Jurupa Valley
Jurupa Valley will accept priority applications for cannabis retail from January 22nd to February 6th, with non-priority applications opening on April 1st. The number of retail businesses permitted will be linked to the city’s population, with 1 license given for every 15,000 residents. This currently means that the number of licenses given will be capped at 7.
City of Lompoc
Lompoc is currently accepting cannabis retail license applications.
City of Moreno Valley
In December, the city raised its cap on dispensary licenses from 8 to 23. In addition to admitting qualified applicants from the last round of applications, the city will make proposal forms for new applicantsavailable online.
City of Pasadena
The city will license up to 6 retail establishments. The permit application process is open on the city websitethrough January 31st.
City of San Diego
The city is currently accepting applications for cannabis outlets with retail sales, up to a limit of four businesses per council district.
City of San Luis Obispo
Applications for 3 storefront retail businesses and an indefinite number of delivery-only retail businesses are open on the city website through January 29th.
City of Vista
Per the ordinance released in December, the city will be granting 3 delivery-only (non-storefront) retail licenses this year.
