Remembering Vinod Mehra, Hindi cinema's one of the finest actors, on his 28th death anniversary today.
Vinod Mehra was an acclaimed Hindi film actor remembered for his charming and subtle roles on the silver screen. Vinod Mehra gave outstanding performances in the films "Anuraag", "Ghar" , "Bemisaal", “Jurmana”, "Amar Deep"and "Swarag Narak". Along with lead roles Vinod Mehra also did secondary lead and supporting roles in many films.
Born on February 13, 1945 in Amritsar, Punjab, Vinod Mehra started out as a child and junior artiste. He first appeared onscreen as the younger version of Kishore Kumar in Raagini (1958), in which Kishore Kumar played an aspiring musician. Mehra moved on to playing a junior artiste in films like Bewaqoof (1960) and Angulimal (1960). He was rediscovered by filmmaker Roop K. Shorey at the famous eatery hangout in Mumbai, Gaylord. Shorey thought he would be perfect for his next project and gave Mehra his first big break with Ek Thi Reeta (1971). Co-starring Tanuja, the film was a virtual remake of Shorey's earlier Ek Thi Ladki (1949) featuring his wife Meena Shorey. However the film flopped and did nothing much for him and it was the film Anuraag in 1972 with Mausumi Chatterjee, which established him as an actor.
Vinod Mehra won accolades for his performance in the film ‘Ghar’, opposite Rekha. His acting in ‘Swarag Narak’ is also remembered for his outstanding performance. Some of the prominent films of Vinod Mehra were were Jaani Dushman, Nagin, Ghar, Kartavya, Swarg Narak, Saajan Bina Suhagan, Ek Hi Raasta, Jurmana, Anurodh, Amar Deep, Bemisal and Khud-Daar. He also acted in the Punjabi film "Maujaan Dubai Diyaan".
Vinod Mehra also produced and directed the film "Gurudev" but died before the completion of the film and director Raj Sippy completed the film later.
Vinod Mehra died of a heart attack on October 30, 1990 at the age of 45.

1). Trishul
Trishul, a revenge drama was released in 1978. It was written by Salim-Javed, music by Mohammed Zahur Khayyam, directed by Yash Chopra and produced by Gulshan Rai. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan as Vijay, Shashi Kapoor as Shekhar, Sanjeev Kumar as R.K.Gupta, Raakhee as Geeta, Hema Malini as Sheetal, Poonam Dhillon as Kusum, Sachin as Ravi and Prem Chopra as Balwant Rai. The plot revolves around Business tycoon R K Gupta who abandons Shanti, his first love, to marry a rich heiress. Later, Vijay, R K Gupta and Shanti’s illegitimate son, seeks revenge from R K Gupta for the injustice his mother had faced.
2). Deewar
Deewar, an action crime drama was released in 1975. It was written by Salim-Javed, music by Rahul Dev Burman, directed by Yash Chopra and produced by Gulshan Rai. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan as Vijay Verma, Shashi Kapoor as Inspector Ravi Verma, Nirupa Roy as Sumitra Devi, Parveen Babi as Anita, Neetu Singh as Veera Narang, Yunus Parvez as Rahim Chacha and Madan Puri as Samant. The plot revolves around brothers Vijay and Ravi. Tortured by the past, Vijay turns to crime and Ravi, his younger brother, becomes an honest police officer. But, destiny had some other plans and Inspector Ravi gets an order to arrest Vijay.
3). Silsila
Silsila, a romantic drama film was released in 1981. It was written by Yash Chopra, Sagar Sarhadi & Romesh Sharma, music by Shiv-Hari, directed and produced by Yash Chopra. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan as Amit Malhotra, Shashi Kapoor as Squadron Leader Shekhar Malhotra in special appearance, Rekha as Chandni, Jaya Bachchan as Shobha Malhotra and Sanjeev Kumar as Dr. V. K. Anand. The plot revolves around Amit who sacrifices his love and marry Shobha, who is pregnant, after his brother Sqdr. Leader Shekhar Malhotra dies in the Indo-Pakistani War. One day, Amit accidentally meets his ex Chandni and he decides that he quit his loveless marriage to Shobha and wishes to reconcile with Chandni.
4). Suhaag
Suhaag, an action drama film was released in 1979. It was written by Kader Khan, Prayag Raj and K.K. Shukla, music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, directed by Manmohan Desai and produced by Rajinder Kumar Sharma, Ramesh Sharma, Shakti Subhash Sharma & Prakash Trehan. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan as Amit Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor as Kishan Kapoor, Rekha as Basanti, Parveen Babi as Anu, Nirupa Roy as Durga Kapoor, Amjad Khan as Vikram Kapoor, Ranjeet as Gopal and Kader Khan as Jaggi. The plot revolves around lost brothers Amit and Kishan, who is Inspector. And they are not aware that they are brothers. One day, their criminal father Vikram hires Amit to kill Inspector Kishan.
5). Roti Kapada Aur Makaan
Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, an action drama film was released in 1979. It was written, directed, and produced by Manoj Kumar. It was written by Kader Khan, Prayag Raj and K.K. Shukla, music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, directed by Manmohan Desai and produced by Rajinder Kumar Sharma, Ramesh Sharma, Shakti Subhash Sharma & Prakash Trehan. The film starred Manoj Kumar as Bharat, Zeenat Aman as Sheetal, Amitabh Bachchan as Vijay, Shashi Kapoor as Mohan Babu, Moushmi Chatterjee as Tulsi, Prem Nath as Harnam Singh, Dheeraj Kumar as Deepak, Kamini Kaushal as Bharat’s mother, Aruna Irani as Poonam, Madan Puri as Nekiram and Raza Murad as Hamid Miya. The plot revolves Bharat, an unemployed graduate, who is not able fulfil basic needs of his family. Bharat joins hands with Nekiram in his illegal activities. His brother Dheeraj joins police force and is appointed to arrest Bharat. Then Bharat and Vijay join forces and with Mohan Babu and Sardar Harnam Singh stop Nekiram and jail him with his troops in the end.

Kala Ghoda gallops head and shoulders ahead of the pandemic, goes virtual! Adds e-stalls this year – bringing artisans online!

Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, one of the premiere iconic arts and crafts festivals of Asia, will now take on a digital avatar from February 6-14 this year, commencing as always on the first Saturday of February, and closing on the second Sunday of February, refusing to let the cacophony of the pandemic drown the annual cultural awakening which will include 70 programs!
For the first time ever, the festival is also set to take its stalls (a huge attraction at the festival every year), online. The Marketplace will open on 6th February, but will go till the end of the month- 28t February. A showcase of an eclectic collection of handicrafts and other products, the Marketplace can be accessed at www.kgaf2021.com
Says Brinda Miller, Honorary Chairperson of the Kala Ghoda Association, “Kala Ghoda Arts Festivals has kept its date with Mumbai for the past 21 years. This 22nd year again, we are celebrating art and culture through a different medium that has spurred us on to ‘unlock’ the entire festival and make it virtual, including the much sought after KGAF stalls. Our partners, artistes and collaborators, who have worked with us through the years, have stepped forward this year too, to make this festival a ‘virtual reality’. What is encouraging is that we have well-wishers from around the world who are excited to be part of our festival this year. This has been an opportunity for us to reinvent the wheel!”
Organised by the Kala Ghoda Association (KGA), a non-profit organisation, the festival to be hosted on Insider (www.kgaf2021.com) will reach out to embrace global audiences with discussions, workshops and demonstrations about dance and music, visual arts, theatre, cinema, literature, book launches, tributes to famous personalities -- in short, the festival presents plenty of events which reflect the rich history of art in Mumbai.
Emphasizing on having something for each and every attendee, the festival showcases numerous programs in films and filmmaking, arts and crafts, prose and poetry, culture, music, dance, storytelling, culinary arts, martial arts and theatre among others.
The 2021 schedule brings forth nine days of programmes and contests, under categories such as Workshops, Panel discussions and Talks, for children and adults alike. Themed under KGAFunlocked and Funlocked, the general and children’s programmes, respectively, promise a week of edutainment for our patrons.
The Kala Ghoda Spotlight features entertaining performances and talks by Leslee Lewis, TM Krishna, Usha Uthup, Ankur Tewari, Rahul Mehrotra, among many biggies, brought by various collaborators including Teamwork, Mahindra Kabira Festival, Team Rewind, Kommune, MAMI and Sula Wines among others, with the highlighting session with #AamhiKon?, a concept that promotes lyrical Marathi Hip Hop and showcases MCs , poets and writers from Maharashtra.
Unlocking Heritage takes us through the city and its renowned architectural precincts; in association with Art Deco Mumbai Trust and Khaki Tours thought Heritage Walks.
Key Conversations promises engaging conversations with luminaries including Ruth Padel, Devdutt Patnaik, Ranjit Hoskote, Prem Chandavarkar, Swiss-Romanian novelist Dana Grigrocea, TM Krishna, Perumal Murugan, Pankaj Udhas with Kavita Krishnamoorthy, Tahira Kashyap, Neena Gupta and Vikas Khanna, Padma Shri Shubha Mudgal, Shilpa Rao, Dia Mirza with Licypriya Kangujam, and Talat Aziz with Pratibha Singh Baghel, Vikas Khanna and Neena Gupta.
UpSkill features workshops by the Arzan (scissorhands) Khambatta, musicians Gino Banks, Rakesh Chaurasia, Ojas Adhiya, Purbayan Chatterjee, Team M N M Talkies on podcasting, Unlocking Anxiety with Sonali Gupta.
In a similar vein, Shake a Leg features workshops with renowned international dancers such as Bea Dabrabant (for Tai Chi), Laura Kenyon (Flamenco), Tommaso Petrolo (contemporary), Naima Yazbek (Brazilian Samba) and Natya Kalari by Dr. Sreejith TR of Dancity India. Other Indian names include Ashley Lobo.
Laugh Out Loud, as the title suggests, brings forth the best in the business of comedy including Atul Khatri, Aditi Mittal, Sorabh Pant, Vir Das, Rohan Joshi, Sonali Thakker and Kashyap Swaroop.
Kitchen Secrets focusses on culinary specialists’ demos and features Saransh Goila, Zeba Kohli, Pooja Dhingra, Tara Deshpande and Michelin Star Chef Fabio Mazzolini from Italy.
KGAF Specials this year also include a section titled Artists’ Studio that will take audiences into the workspace of artists including Arzan Khambatta, Paresh Maity, Ajay De, Madhvi Subrahmanian, Brinda Miller, Sameer Kulavoor, Sunil Padwal, Dhruvi Acharya, Seema Kohli and Rekha Rodwittiya.
Kashish International Film Festival will also be showcasing cinematic works, both Indian as well as International, and will also be hosting a panel of trans artists in the cinema world!
Funlocked, the children’s section, includes an exciting workshop by Harun Robert, storytime with Kahaani Online, Anand Neelakantan and Shabnam Minwalla, celebrated authors both. Meera Warrier's The Treasure Chest with Maya brings alive the story of the Kala Ghoda for kids, and the talented team at Amar Chitra Katha shares the story behind some of their iconic characters!
This year, KGAF’s partners include KOMMUNE, Kashish, MAMI, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Bangalore International Centre, Nehru Science Centre and Amar Chitra Katha, as also cultural embassies including the Institute of Italian Culture, Consulate General of Switzerland, the Italian Cultural Centre (Mumbai), the Brazilian Consulate and the Consulate General of Sweden.
The proceeds from KGAF are used for restoration projects in the Kala Ghoda precinct. In the past few years, the Kala Ghoda Association has funded restoration of iconic structures such as the Elphinstone College building, the Institute of Science, the Khyber Restaurant wall mural, the Cama Hall exteriors, garden of the David Sassoon library, the Bomonjee Hormusjee Wadia Clock Tower (located at Perin Nariman street), the Seth Gangalal Nandlal V Mulji Pyav located at the entrance of the Horniman Circle Garden and the Ruttonsee Muljee Jetha water fountain, among many others. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Vaastu Sangrahalaya (The Prince of Wales Museum) ,Elphinstone College,Rhythm House and the Asiatic Library have also been recipients of the Association’s funds and support.

Khoobsurat actor Ranjit Chowdhry died at 65 in the US
Ranjit Chowdhry, a writer and actor of the Bollywood fraternity who played the iconic role of Rakesh Roshan’s younger brother in movie Khoobsurat died on April 15th. He was 65 years old.
The news was put up on Instagram by Ranjit’s half-sister and a well-known theatre personality Raell Padamsee. Raell is Mumbai based actress who has earned great name and fame in the theatre industry. She wrote on Instagram, “For all those who knew Ranjit, the funeral will be held tomorrow and a gathering to celebrate his life n share his stories on May 5th. With love, Raell.”
The son of Mumbai theatre heavyweight Pearl Padamsee and the step son of ad film maverick, Alyque Padamsee, Ranjit is also remembered for his iconic role in Ben Kingsley’s Gandhi. He played the role of MA Jinnah.
As reported by a Bollywood digital magazine, Ranjit moved to the US in 1980 and was an active writer and actor there as well. He played the role of Jagan Gupta in Hrithikesh Mukherjee’s iconic film, Khubsoorat. A great song from the movie, in which Ranjit appeared with Rekha, Sare Niyam Tod Do is very popular till date among all age groups.
Ranjit worked in a number of films in Bollywood including the super hit movie Khatta Meetha and Baaton Mein directed by Basu Chatterjee. He also worked in some popular US Shows including The Office, after he moved to the US. He played the role of Vikram. It is reported that he was the screenplay writer for Deepta Mehta’s Sam & Me. Ranjit earned a mention in the Cannes Festival for his contribution to the film.
He was an iconic actor and writer and equally impressive personality. Bollywood wishes a tribute to him on his death.
