Sailor Moon VS Winx Club

Is Winx Club really a rip off of Sailor Moon with fairies?

In the world of magical girl fandom, there seems to be two big rival groups. Those that love Winx Club and those that love Sailor Moon but surprisingly hate Winx Club, saying it’s a rip off of Sailor Moon with fairies. Why is that? Well let’s look at the similarities.

1. You have a main character that is a princess, that doesn’t know she’s a princess until later on the series, because her kingdom fell into disaster thanks to a great evil, so she’s sent to the human world to live a normal safe life.

2. The main character possesses a power that the bad guys want. 

3. The girl is a teenager when she discovers all this. 

4. There are other female warriors that try to help and fight along side her.

5. The main character has a cute magical creature.

6. The main characters can transform and can control an element of some sort. 

7. One of the symbols of her powers is a heart and then she has another mystical symbol to go with it.

When you look at all these similarities, you kinda can see where people are coming from. However, the same tropes that both series follow, is kinda the same tropes with most magical girl anime and shows. Shoot, even other shows like TMNT has tropes that follow a basic formula, such as having a hot temper team member, a wise teacher they follow and a comedic relief character. 

To keep it interesting and different, a company or team has to do their own spin on the story that’s been told dozens of times. Refreshing it so it looks like you’ve heard the story for the first time and that’s what Winx does.

Usagi/Serena and Bloom are similar but very different from each other. Usagi is a cry baby, a bit of a ditz, clumsy and isn’t specifically talented in anything. She takes an interest in manga art but it sorta comes out of no where. When she first becomes Sailor Moon, she doesn’t want to be a warrior and tries to run away until Tuxedo Mask encourages her.

Bloom is the opposite. She starts out kinda tomboyish, she’s a little quirky, adventurous and when she discovers her magic powers, she thinks it’s cool. She loves the magic and the fairy tales. She dreams and grew up with such tales. I mean sure, the pressure of having magical powers does get to her from time to time but that’s a natural thing like for Usagi. They’re both teenagers that have their own problems and own strengths and are done really well. They’re both relatable but they’re very different from each other.

Both their team of friends who fight along side them are very different too. Some of the Winx actually share traits with two Sailors. Tecna is kinda like Ami being she’s a genius but she’s also very snarky like Rei. Flora is shy like Ami but she loves plants like Mako/Lita, also very good at cooking (though it’s debated. Sometimes she cooks something gross like her tea). Aisha is like both Rei in which she has a hard time trusting others, but she’s also very tomboyish like Mako and also very strong. Stella is kinda like Mina except that instead of being into sports like Mina, she’s more into fashion and is good at designing. Musa is kinda the only one that doesn’t share many traits with any of the sailors. I guess she’s laid back like Mako is, but in her own way and that’s all the Winx. 

At the same time having these similarities, the Winx are much different. In fact, as big a fan of Sailor Moon as I am, especially with how they do the story and animation, the one thing I do give Winx credit, besides the interesting concepts  is how they write teenagers. 

Sailor Moon has wonderful characters but I can’t help but feel like the main inner scouts not including Usagi, kinda feel slightly lack luster. They’re not bad but they kinda don’t feel as deep as say the outer scouts or Usagi. They just don’t seem to be as fleshed out as you want them to be. Part of the reason is while they do have back stories, it’s more so explained and not fully fleshed out. We don’t see much of their family life, except for Rei’s because they hang out at her place all the time. The manga goes a little further about their back story, but even in Crystal, you kinda get gypt off from their stories. This may explain why most of the time, people tend to favor Usagi or any of the outer scouts more than the inners, which is a shame. 

The Winx all have back stories and act like a teenager would. They go through things that a lot of kids do go through. Example is Musa who lost her mother tragically and not just when she was a baby like most of these kinds of things. She literally watched her die and witness her family fall a part because of it, which was a big thing for shows for kids at the time. You didn’t see that for kids, let alone girl’s shows a lot at the time.  

Stella’s parents are divorced and you see how it effects her. Bloom finds out she’s adopted and for the first 3 seasons struggles in finding out what happened to them and how to save them.

Another thing is the Winx don’t really control that many elements to be honest. You have Flora who controls plant life, Bloom that controls fire and Stella is light, but then you have Musa who controls music and sound, Tecna is aura or energy I guess but she also controls technology and Aisha has some command over water, but mostly uses her own kinda thing called Morphix. A pink substance that can change shape, texture and even concentration. That’s a pretty clever idea, which kinda makes them a little more different than W.i.t.c.h even.

They go to a magic school and town where magic is normal and Bloom’s adoptive parents actually know that she’s a fairy. Yeah, there’s no hiding it, they find out the first time she does. (Though accept it a little too well...My parents would have freaked the hell out if they found out I had magical powers...) So yeah, Winx does do a lot to be it’s own thing and that’s the main important part.

When it comes to story and development, Sailor Moon is a little stronger, especially since it’s an anime, it kinda follows a more towards story and better writing, but when I want more on the character stories and interesting concepts I turn to Winx.

As for Winx and WITCH, I watched WITCH before and I found it alright,but I don’t see much similarities other than the girls become fairies.  Again the girls are all different in their own way from each other and WITCH is set heavily in it’s world rules, like WITCH fairies are bound to this crystal and the girls are just suddenly chosen. Winx has it’s own rules but everything is explained well of why they have powers and they explore more worlds and come across more characters and creatures.

That’s another reason why I like Winx too. WITCH and Sailor Moon have their own rules of who can be a guardian and whatnot. Not everyone can use magical powers and while some people like that idea, I like how imaginative you can be with the concepts of Winx. If you don’t like the story or characters, you can make your own characters with the same concepts or even make your own concepts and rules. It’s like MLP, you can create a character and do your own story, even manipulate some of the laws, if you really want to. It’s just great if you want a show that inspires your creativity, even if it’s just for fanfic stuff. But hey, some people do this to help eventually inspire some original works, so it works if you’re an artist and writer.

But yeah, is it a rip off of Sailor Moon or even WITCH? Not really since similarities that it does have with the shows, really are tropes that a lot of shows follow. It’s all about what you do with the concept and how you write the story. They do have some ideas and some concepts were obviously inspired off of Sailor Moon, but SM also took some liberties from other older magical girl shows, such as the brooches looking a lot similar to Akko-chan’s mirror seen below. There were other magical girl shows before SM that were about princesses trying to get better in their magic, in order to become better people, thus better rulers. The major difference is that Sailor Moon had a team and fought evil instead of just solving problems, which set off a slue of other magical girl shows that would follow after.

Take it for what it’s worth. In my opinion, they’re all different enough to be it’s own thing and that’s the main thing. I’m Tech and seeya in the next review!

At this point, I should just move this to A03. 

Last we saw, Kylo was seducing Bazine into giving up information about Snoke. Rey was upset because she was aware that there was something between them and because he had taken her first kiss. She watched him kiss and fondle another woman, all in the name of her kingdom, and she couldn’t stand it. Now we have the fallout. 

Kylo Ren was not a man who wanted for much. A dry place to rest his head, a sharp sword strapped to his side, a hearty meal, (he’d get by on less but if he had his druthers), and his compass, a gift from the father he thought he could’ve had. Women came and went, men came and went, and he followed their leads, sometimes took over and directed them to where he wanted them, but while his interest was captured, his heart never was. 

Until Rey.

Kylo hated to admit it. It made him vulnerable. Weaknesses were gaping holes, allowing others to snap at him with stained teeth and wolfish breath. He worked hard so that he was the dominant member of the food chain. But when he was caught--when Snoke ordered him to be caught--he never expected to actually fall for the chit of a girl.

He had believed the stories he had been told. How young and incompetent she was. How her father had died far too early, leaving a child in charge. A child who would be grateful for a strong male influence.

And how all of that had been thrown away by the cool assessing look in her hazel eyes. This was not a child, he frantically thought as he ordered himself to remain calm. This is a woman. A woman who has held herself back.

He spent that night wondering what it would be like to remove those bonds, to see what she would be like undone and he didn’t just stop at the idea of removing her kirtle, of seeing those pert breasts, her shapely legs. She could be hideous under all those layers, he told himself, but he doubted it.

Her laugh was infectious, her wit alternating between barbed and light, her smile a radiant gift that he began to cherish. When she had come into his room, his gift in hand, he had not expected her to use it. He had expected her to send it back with a righteous anger. He did not expect her to study and to flick it against his backside. He did not expect himself to respond to the little scavenger queen.

So when she asked him to betray everything he had known before, he found it far simpler than it should have been.

Kylo Ren was made by Snoke. He should not have so easily thrown it aside for her bright eyes and gentle touch. And now that she had successfully routed the men that Snoke had sent, now that she had his spy in her dungeons, he had thought that had would mean something to her.

But all she could see was the tool. The man who used his dick to get what he wanted as easily as he would use any other weapon.

It was infuriating.

The morning after last night’s seduction, Rey had locked herself up in a war council. Kylo found himself at loose ends and discovered a sparring room. He spent several hours moving his body, fists pounded the heavy bags until knuckles bled, his shoulders screaming as he struck the wooden columns with a staff. Sweat slid down his spine and pooled along his waist band. His hair was matted to his head and he didn’t care. In these moments, when the movement and the breath were all that mattered, he could ignore his heart.

Kylo Ren had a heart.

And he had to be ready to fight at all times because now he could be exploited.

Kylo flung his staff to the ground and used a cloth to wipe at the sweat dripping into his brows. He heard a slow clapping and turned a weary eye to the shadowed corner.

Poe Dameron was leaning on a column, looking entirely too satisfied with himself. Kylo growled and looked away.

“Like what you see, Dameron?”

He felt Dameron’s gaze rake over him and twisted to see a cocky grin edge up the older man’s face.

“Nah, you’re not my type.”

“I heard you liked the stockier type,” Kylo half sneered. Poe shrugged as if he couldn’t be bothered with school boy insults.

“She doesn’t know what to do with you,” Poe said abruptly and Kylo froze as he bent to pick up the practice sword. He heard the two guards rustling, ready to attack him if need be but he settled down on the ground, crossing his legs, and began wiping down the weapon.

“Is that right?”

“She’s used to people seeing her as a crown or a child or someone who needs help. You treat her as something else.”

“And what’s that?”

“A woman and a desirable one,” Poe answered solemnly. “Now, she’s going to get that sooner or later, and probably sooner, but you’re the first one who doesn’t seem to care for the crown. And she won’t know what you’ve done for her until you tell her.” Kylo didn’t respond, just continued to polish the dull metal. “She doesn’t know that you were sent here by Snoke to tempt her. She doesn’t know that you just committed treason.”

“No she thinks I’m lead about by my prick.”

“She doesn’t know you.”

“And what do you want me to do about that?,” Kylo snarled. “Why do you even care?” Poe regarded him evenly.

“Easy. I want a king who will protect his queen. It makes my job easier knowing I can focus elsewhere if her king has her back.” Poe stepped away from the column, eyes hooded and foreboding in the light. “That could be you.” Kylo laughed bitterly.

“She likes them pretty boys.”

“She thinks she likes pretty boys. She’s young in so many ways, Ben.” Kylo flinched at the mention of the name. “You need to show her.”

“I’m too hard for wooing, Dameron.”

“Then learn again! Before another idiot takes her away and I have to worry about her instead of just the crown,” Poe snapped, spinning on his heel and walking off. Kylo bit his lip and shook his head. He spent the better part of another hour brooding in the room before he went back to his chambers and bathed. He then wandered about until he found one of the gardeners and trailed him back to the gardens.

Kylo struggled to remember his lessons as a price in Alderaan. In the end, he had several bouquets sent to her of alstroemeria, apple blossom, baby’s breath, bluebells, gardenias, and delphinium. A tale of devotion and honesty and love.

He waited in his rooms and night fell, the moon rising cold and bright. The fire ate through most of his piled wood and he could hear the music dying down. He drained his fourth mug of ale.

Finally, as the grey light of dawn filtered through his windows, he banked the fire.

And then the knock came on his door.

Thoughts on the D23 Expo Announcements

Quite frankly, if you’re reading this blog, there’s a 99% probability you already know about the announcements that came out of the D23 Expo this past weekend. If somehow you’re unaware, D23 is the “official Disney fan club”. Every summer they do a big convention in Anaheim where Disney makes their major announcements for the year. I’d love to go one day, but except for the first year I signed up, I haven’t even been able to keep my D23 membership going. There just aren’t enough events on the East Coast, and I live at Disney World! Even though I’m a couple days behind, I want to talk about how excited I am for almost all of the announcements.

Magic Kingdom

Tron Indoor Roller Coaster: I’ve never actually seen the original Tron, only the sequel. However, I love everything about the look of Tron and the futuristic sleekness. I’m jealous of practically everything at Disneyland Shanghai, but particularly the Tron coaster. A friend of mine actually snagged me the Tron Duffy outfit on his last visit over there! I am super excited they’re bringing it to my home park. I am a little surprised we’re keeping the Speedway, and I am extremely curious how they’re going to fit it into Tomorrowland.

Main Street Theater: I am incredibly excited for a venue in Magic Kingdom that can do full length, indoor productions. I am mildly terrified because the concept art looks like the location of Town Square Theater. As long as Mickey still has a meeting location at Magic Kingdom, I’m okay. I love Magician Mickey!

We Wants the Red Head-The Pirate Makeover: Technically this was announced before D23, but I am still over the moon that Disney is realizing times are changing, and the parks should too. Little girls can be pirates too! Also, the selling of women into sexual slavery really has no place in any Disney Park.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway: Mickey Mouse is finally getting his own ride and it’s replacing The Great Movie Ride, or as I like to call it, “The Great Movies We Have the Rights to Ride”. I have several friends who will hate me for this, but I have never been a huge fan of GMR. (Former cast member, I speak in acronyms.) For someone who loves movie making, I’ve never been a huge fan of “classic movies”. I had to sit through way too many of them in college. I am perfectly happy for it to make way for my favorite Mouse, who certainly deserves his own ride after sixty years. I am not happy that they told the world before they told the cast, with barely a month’s notice that it was closing. I have a friend who literally transferred there end of May/beginning of June, who has been dreaming of being a Gangster, and now has no idea where he’s going to end up. I am also not super excited that it’s based on the new Mickey cartoons instead of classic ones. I am not a big fan of the new animation style at all. Plus, they really should have waited until Toy Story Land was open to shut it down, Studios really can’t afford to lose another ride right now. Plus now this makes Toy Story Midway Mania the only ride without a height requirement in the park! I did snag Fastpasses for one of the last days as soon as the announcement was made and am going to go film my friend’s tour.

Toy Story Land: I have been excited for Toy Story Land since I saw the concept art for Hong Kong’s in 2010. I am super excited it’ll be ready by next year, but I’m a little sad it only has two rides. The parachute drop ride found in Hong Kong looks like a lot of fun, but I guess it’s too similar to the Tower of Terror.

Star Wars Land-The Galaxy’s Edge: I honestly wasn’t a big Star Wars fan until Force Awakens, thank you Rey, but ever since I’ve thrown myself into the galaxy in a big way. Having seen what they’ve done with Pandora, I am super excited to see what they do with Star Wars. Rex is coming back! I don’t really remember him, but he was awfully cute.

Epcot

Future World: Epcot is my least favorite Disney park. I have never seen the appeal of World Showcase, partially because I’m a picky eater and partially because, generally speaking, eating at Disney is too expensive. Plus I still haven’t forgiven them for getting rid of Duffy’s meet and greet, and I probably never will. I am happy to see it’s finally getting some love and some much needed updates. Future World should have stopped looking like the 80s a long time ago. The new restaurant sounds cool, but I don’t see myself dying to eat there.

Mission Space: I actually haven’t ridden Mission Space since 2013, and I honestly don’t have much of a plan on changing this. It doesn’t make me sick or anything, but I have this OCD quirk where I need to be on the right and whoever I’m with needs to be on the left. The last time I rode Mission Space I got stuck on the left and it was super cramped and I freaked out. I just literally haven’t gone back, but I am happy it’s getting updated for everyone who loves this ride.

France: One of the reasons I don’t love World Showcase is the lack of rides. The theming is beautiful and it’s wonderful, but it’s never been enough to hold my attention for long. The only reason I ever stop in France is looking for Belle or I used to get fancy pastries before we found out about the whole “no dairy” thing. I think I’ve seen Ratatouille once, maybe twice. Mostly I just remember Audrey being mad at me for making her go see it. So I’m not exactly jumping for joy over bringing the ride here from Disneyland Paris, but I’m still happy we’re adding a ride to World Showcase. What I am really excited about is to see a trackless ride system implemented at Disney World.

Guardians of the Galaxy: They should have taken Ellen’s Energy Adventure out when they took away the dinosaurs. I mean, it’s a cute ride but it’s the most dated, longest, air conditioned place for a nap on property. I took my brother on it two years ago and he actually fell asleep. So replacing it with my second favorite Marvel faction? Heck yes! The idea that Star Lord went to Epcot as a kid is a little silly, but James Gunn signed off on it, so I’m in. I can’t wait to hear more details on this one, and it’s probably the announcement I’m the most excited for.

China: I’ve never actually seen the film we have now. Guess I should go check that out before they change it.

Walt Disney World Resort

Skyliner: This rumor had been circulating the internet for months, and I can’t wait to ride it, but I’m mostly curious about capacity. If each car only holds two-four, people are going to be waiting two hours just to get to the parks for the first few years of operation. I’m also psyched to see the different characters on them, but the fact that the concept art has two different styles of Mickey and Minnie trips me out.

Minnie Vans: Okay, these are adorable and I kind of want one for myself. I’m mildly disappointed they don’t actually have bows on them.
