It's time to do laundry....again.
If you have a baby (or a child, or even just a partner who seems to think the clothes fairy makes clean clothes appear) you might be amazed at just HOW MUCH extra washing is generated. This is especially true during the spitting up stage. You can:
Change your baby’s clothes every time (ugh!)
OR
2. Invest in some bibs!
As cute as little baby outfits are, it didn’t take long before we were all about that onesie life (for my baby AND myself). Sally spit up from the time she was born until she started to walk and changing her clothes a dozen times a day was not happening. Having lots of super absorbent bibs on hand saved my sanity and my water bill.
Today I’m reviewing:
The most absorbent bibs for heavy spitters
The best bibs for catching drool (and still looking cute!)
An easy to clean option for solid foods and purees
A fun DIY bib pattern
AND an awesome burp cloth for reflux babies!
Bibs for Reflux
If you have a heavy spitter you need an extra absorbent bib that covers a LOT of real estate. Bandana bibs are cute but not so great at catching what my husband affectionately referred to as ‘the rivers of sick.’
My favorite absorbent bib is this one made by Tommee Tipee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros:
Super absorbent
Made from super soft, reversible material
Easy velcro closure for easy access before and after feedings
Padded neckband to protect skin, reduce discomfort and prevent rashes
We used ours every feeding time and because it was so comfortable Sally didn’t mind keeping it on for 30-45 minutes afterwards (just in case!)
Bibs for Drool
At some point you are probably going to be dealing with it—babies drool. And when they are teething they can drool A LOT. You may actually question how so much liquid can come from such a small person! Anytime Sally wasn’t wearing one her trusty Tommee Tipee bibs we made sure she had one of these bandana bibs by Dr. Brown’s on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros:
Compact—easy to fold up and throw in a change bag
Available in a ton of cute patterns
Rubber ring is perfect for sore gums to chew on
Snap closure makes it harder for baby to pull off
Bibs for Solids
When you introduce solids you will soon find you are dealing with a new issue—food is everywhere! Thankfully, with the right bib you can at least save yourself from trying to scrub pureed sweet potato out of your baby’s clothes. We loved these sleeved bibs from Bumkins.
Tumblr media
Pros:
Waterproof, stain and odor resistant
Elasticized cuffs
Simple tie closure
Can be used from 6 to 24 months
Can also be used for painting and other messy play
Easy to clean- just rinse off with soapy water
Bib DIY
If you are a crafty person (or even if you’re not but want to give it a go!) you could also try a DIY option. Because lets face it—as expensive as laundry can get (especially if you are addicted to the smell of Dreft like I was), buying dozens of bibs can also get pricey.
If you have some sewing knowledge already, I love this great, FREE pattern for creating a simple bandana bib. These are ideal for catching drool or the occasional small spit up. They wash well and the pattern even shows a simple method for adding a snap closure. You can use whatever fabric you want, but I really liked adding a thick terrycloth to the inside for absorbency.  Once Sally started teething these were a constant addition to any and all outfits. Here are a few examples:

Finally, if you are looking for something doesn’t need to be pretty but is going to be able to catch heavier volumes, this is a simple hack I’ve just found online that requires very little sewing know-how and uses materials you probably already have at home.
You’ll need:
A triangle of fabric (one of those big paisley handkerchiefs folded in half is an option)
A hand towel
Sewing method of your choice (you can machine sew, hand sew or use my busy mom favorite, no-sew fabric glue)
All you need to do is take your hand towel and sew your triangle along the top edge. There’s no need to finish the edges and to fasten all you need to do is make sure the ends of your triangle are long enough to comfortably tie like a handkerchief. The results may not be the most fashionable, but it is a quick and easy option when needs must!
Bonus!
This post originally appeared in the Infant Acid Reflux Solutions newsletter when my daughter was a baby. She’s older now and (thankfully!) no longer spits up, but I’ve since discovered a lot of new products I wish we’d had back then. One popular option among my Mum friends is the Burp Buddy- a flippable burp cloth with WAY more space than typical options. Admittedly, I also love how cute they are! (And it sure beats draping a bath towel around your shoulders in a haphazard attempt to avoid the puke fountains! ) have you tried the Burp Buddy? What did you think?
