What are your thoughts on joeys character in batdr and his redemption? If you ask me I like what they did with him. They gave him redemption without excusing some of the bad stuff he did. And I think memory joey could grow to be somewhat of his own character. But the redemption isn’t perfect though. Even though I said the it didn’t excuse some of the stuff he did it felt like they swept the bad stuff under the rug. But who knows. Maybe they’ll fix this in future.

But enough about what I think, what don you think?

I’ve talked about this before – the TL;DR of that post is that I think this is, conceptually, a promising way to portray Joey moving forward to be better for someone new, but in actual execution it fails to do that.

TBH I’d love to stop categorising this as “redemption”… I've grown to dislike this framing, debating whether it’s a Good Redemption or a Bad Redemption or whether Joey is Really Redeemed or Not, because it assumes that Redemption™ is even what’s happening in this story. BatDR is a story where we’re given reason to believe that Joey may have had a change of heart. That’s it! We can question and analyse his supposed change of heart, but it doesn’t have to REDEEM HIM to be real, and I think measuring things on the scale of REDEEMED VS NOT REDEEMED is not only gliding over some pretty complex ideas of What Does Redeemed Mean In The Context Of Fiction (it is the sort of concept that it is so, so easy for people to have vastly different unspoken definitions for, making discussions of “he was redeemed” “no he wasn’t” especially futile), but also not really useful here.

For one thing, this isn’t a story about Joey's change of heart. Tbh, he barely features – Memory Joey can have a change of heart and work to be better if you believe/headcanon that he has OG Joey’s attitude, worldview, and personality flaws (which I do), but he has no crimes to acknowledge or repent for other than MAYBE reluctance to get involved. You might as well ask a person to repent for the crimes of their kins!! We hear about the choices original Joey made, and we can judge those choices postmortem, but he’s not here to redeem himself through this story; he’s dead.

As to the actual spirit of your question: The big thing. The really really big thing. Is that the CYCLE IS STILL GOING. It’s still going and it’s still bad and everyone in it is still miserable!! He didn’t fix that!!! The only evidence we have of ANY attempt to make it nicer in there is that he added Allison Angel, which like, “i’ve created a new life to keep you company in the torture dimension, so it’s less bad” is NOT ACTUALLY BETTER.

It’s important because it’s the only thing Joey could still try to do. He clearly doesn’t have any money to give restitution to his victims or their families, and I’m not gonna be a cop about demanding that he return the ink machine to the corporation that’s even more evil than he was. There’s not a lot of tangible steps he could take to perform penance for what he’s done, beyond fessing up publicly to his crimes and turning himself in and definitely going to jail, and like, maybe that would be a good thing for him to do, but if we’re going to hold Joey to that standard we really should be making the same demands of, say, Thomas Connor, or Sammy Lawrence in every Escape AU.

He can’t go back and un-ruin the lives he ruined years ago. But he didn’t do anything about the cycle, and that’s something that’s still happening NOW.

That was his responsibility, sapient life that he created to suffer and should have felt a huge obligation to – yet, we have no evidence that Joey was like, trying to fix it (in fact, he seemed PRETTY FOCUSED on spending his limited time creating and then raising Audrey), so every assertion that he was a changed man falls a bit flat, because being a sweet, loving person to your family and friends while running an endlessly looping torture dimension in your basement is actually quite sinister! Even Memory Joey asserts that the only reason he can’t fix the cycle now is because he’s not really the OG Joey who made it – does that mean the OG Joey could? Audrey says she wants to make the cycle kinder; could Joey have done that? Why didn’t he? We know from Allison's appearance in the original BatIM that the hellish experience of the first game IS the version that came from Joey’s change of heart, and it’s not great for literally anyone!!

Joey was a better person to Audrey, his daughter, and I do believe he genuinely loved her. If it were just that, it would be pretty good – Joey disappears from public life and stops obsessing over Bendy and instead of barging into his past victims’ lives to demand forgiveness, he just wants to be a better man and a good father to this daughter he created. That’s a compelling story, and I think it’s probably the best direction that “Joey wants to be better” could go. But once we realise he was actively ignoring suffering that he both caused and was responsible for fixing, it’s hard to take that love in good faith anymore. Joey being good exclusively to people that he likes who are doing what he wants isn’t anything new; Joey’s delight in The One Who Came Out Right feels less like a change of heart when we see Memory Joey echo his complete lack of sympathy for The One Who Came Out Wrong.

The reason it feels like Joey’s wrongdoing was glossed over isn’t because Joey needed to record an audiolog saying “I acknowledge that my actions were without excuse, and I’m deeply sorry for the harm I’ve caused” or whatever… it’s because there was something he could’ve changed, or could’ve at least TRIED to change, and he didn’t do it -- and it feels like we, the audience, were not supposed to notice that, because the story didn’t notice, either. It'd be possible to address it; like, what if Joey's change of heart instead involved him trying to fix things for the people in the cycle, and Audrey was created accidentally in that process -- then his love for Audrey would also be a picture of how far he'd come, taking responsibility for this person he'd brought into being and seeing her as a beloved daughter instead of a mistake. Or even just an audiolog where Joey says some kind of “oh god I can’t end it, it’s just going to repeat forever, what have i done, what can i do,” and it might actually feel possible to believe in his change of heart, to believe that he really tried as hard as he could and just never succeeded. But this huge thing is barely acknowledged. It's fine. He put Allison in there, so now it's fine! Don't dwell on the past!!

Anyway, like I said in my first post, if all this were intentional, I would LOVE it, conceptually. The idea of Joey Drew being a good father to Audrey who really genuinely loved her, but also was not actually a better person in a lot of ways, was still the same guy who was uncomfortable with guilt and glossed over his wrongdoing in order to prematurely Move On from the things that made him feel like a failure and focus on the relationship with his daughter that made him feel like a success, is a compelling, difficult character! The way so many people fell in love with Memory Joey just seems like, how everyone in original Joey’s life must’ve felt about him, the way they all kept believing in him despite everything, the way they wanted so badly to believe him. Impose this lens upon the whole game, and it all fits in. But since there’s no sign it’s intentional – and, with the archive, actually some signs that it wasn’t – it sort of sits weirdly. Memory Joey isn’t framed as an unreliable narrator. The tone of his final scene clearly isn’t MEANT to be dissonant.

So, uh, that’s what I think. I think the concept of Joey having a genuine change of heart and being better for his daughter could be good; I think the concept of Joey presenting himself as a changed man when really he is Just The Same, He Just Likes You This Time, could also be good. But he was handled clumsily enough that I think we didn’t quite get either thing, and, as usual, you have to fill in the blanks with headcanons and inferences to get one of these stories -- so which story you get kinda depends on which way you decide to interpret everything. Nothing tells us for sure that Joey didn't try his hardest to fix everything, so if you want that story, you can simply headcanon that he tried his hardest. But my personal preference is definitely for the reading where Joey believes himself a changed man because he really does love his daughter, and that's genuinely sweet!! but he remained the same man he always was, dodging guilt and responsibility in favour of a narrative that made him feel good about himself. I'm still quite proud of the frustrated little indictment Memory Joey gives him in that one creationship comic I made:

It's been a minute since I've watched the Zigfried season which I actually do like to watch. The other duelists are even more gimmicky and useless than ever BUT i love kaiba land and we get to see lots of kaiba land america, i think zigfried is a really fun low stakes villain, and you get to see seto kaiba act wild in a low stakes way, and one of my favorite parts is yugi sitting in the stands not planning to duel and being told he's going to have to, so it's a fun breather season in between a kind of intense waking the dragons and final millennial duel. my sub watching hasn't reached this season yet, so be aware i mainly watch the dub.

SO zigfried von schroeder. what's his deal?

zigfried, first and foremost to myself, is pathetic. i love that about him. he's seto kaiba with no redeeming characteristics. he doesn't love his brother, he can't win, and while i need to remember he does successfully hack kaiba corp and cause some chaos, but the truth is seto doesn't even really remember him. zigfried sees himself as seto's rival, sees himself as right and just in his battle, but the truth is seto kaiba is just more popular and cooler than he is, and seto only remembers his bad fashion sense. amazing. perfecto.

usually when i write zigfried, he is cut off from his family's money due to his constant failure, meaning he's even more driven to chase seto's coat tails, and even more useless at doing it. zigfried is such a good parallel to seto intentionally, they are clearly foils to each other, but one place i really like to explore is their relationship to pegasus. i've mentioned before i think before pegasus was seto's main villain, he was probably his hero, and i also think it's obvious zigfried styled himself with pegasus' influence, and in fact they both bring forth their similar technology at the same time, meaning they probably had similar ideas for their career in relation to pegasus. i think there's a lot to break down in that relationship web, especially with zigfried chasing daddy's approval, and seto being decidedly against any paternal influence.

and of course, zigfried sucks cock. to me, he's gay as the day is long, very into humiliation and kink, very active in the kink scene and into some extreme stuff. there are things i'm not personally into so i don't know how often i would write it, but there are character truths and i am merely their narrator. i can't track down a small fic i did kind of as a relationship examination of zigfried and marik of all people, so i'll have to edit and post it to ao3 for folks to read. however i do have a main continuity seto/zigfried (which i refer to as hackshipping instead of its, ahem, more problematic moniker) fic that features more degradation if you're interested. thanks to my gf's au that i write fanfiction just for them, i got sort of into the idea of zigfried craving seto literally killing him, so there is a streak of violence to their relationship. i know i'm kaijou on main (and i have considered a few seto/joey/zigfried ideas, which is kind of what worst kids is for) but to be honest a lot of the degradation kink i see people respond to for kaijou i reserve more for seto/zigfried.

my biggest question about zigfried is kind of central to his plot. he and seto had developed the same technology at the same time, but seto got there first. zigfried assumes seto stole from him, which i'm going to assume because seto is a main character in a show about friendship, that didn't happen, and i also don't think seto would steal from someone else, in my head that's a form of "cheating", which seto is opposed to, but also the show never goes out of its way to be like well that didn't happen. so sometimes i watch the season like, okay but did he? (he didn't, but it's fun to play pretend)

bonus: i have a trans headcanon for mokuba where she starts to transition as a teen, and i actually like to put her and leon in the same space, especially as they get older. they have a lot in common as well and i think they could talk about a lot of things. sometimes i imagine a t4t wedding between mokuba/leon where they have to navigate their relationships with their brothers, who are blowing up the wedding venue to get back at each other. maybe one day i'll play around with that.

This is art for my New All Caste au. Basically, Jason wants to rebuild the all caste in order to keep the culture alive and also to have more people who can fight the untitled. Since Essence is busy sharing a body with Isabel, Jason decides he’ll do it on his own. He was the only human to be able to learn how to wield the all blades and the all blades are connected to his soul so he uses some random magic item to find people with souls like his. The two people he finds first are Tara and Grant. So now he has to redeem them according to all caste standards so murder is fine but other than that Jason’s got his work cut out for him.

In this au, they did all die at some point but stayed dead long enough for all of them to have ended up roughly the same age. Originally when Jason was 13, Tara was 15 and Grant was 20 but now they’re all roughly twenty. I keep saying ‘roughly’ because Jason was in a coma and unresponsive for a bit so if you ignored that year then he’d probably be more like nineteen.

Also, since I don’t think I’d be able to handle the whole cannon Tara and Slade situation with the gravity it requires and since I just prefer them to have a slightly messed up mentor mentor dynamic, Slade never groomed Tara. Or at least not that kind of grooming. He still probably wasn’t the best to her but nothing romantic or sexual ever happened. He treated her and saw her just like the rest of his kids so whilst she’d still have issues because of him, it won’t be those kind of issues.

Once Grant came back to life he decided not to reconnect with his family because whilst he did miss Joey, this was his chance to have a life completely separate from his parents and he wasn’t going to pass that up. Mostly he just hung out with his old pall Jade and did jobs with her until Jason showed up.

Jason met Tara first and when he gave her his sales pitch she was living with Slade, Tanya, Rose and Poppy. She’d just gotten into a fight with Slade and took up Jason’s offer because he promised health insurance, dental, free food, living in the Chamber of All where no one but Jason and S’ara could get to, and getting magic swords by the end of it which she could brag about to Rose sounded like a pretty good deal. However, after her many bad experiences she isn’t exactly the most trusting person so gave him a fake name - Rocky. (I know it’s silly but if she used Terra as an alias, Rocky isn’t completely out of the question.)

When he gave the pitch to Grant, Grant said he’d go if he got payed and after being Red Hood for a while Jason had gotten a lot of money he mostly just spent on reinvesting in Gotham but still had more than he knew what to do with. He figured rebuilding the all caste was a good enough goal to spend money on so agreed and Grant joined the team.

From there they take a while to get along with each other. They take even longer to figure out who everyone is. Grant never heard of Tara and Jason only heard bits and pieces from Dick when he’d visit but Dick never talked a lot about her because either she’d already betrayed them or was just a plain headache to deal with. Grant died before Jason became Robin so would only know him as the Red hood guy whose friends with Jade’s ex and Tara would have probably only heard about Jason through Rose. Granted she wasn’t paying that much attention. Whilst they all vaguely know the others are capes too, no one actually bothered to mention their identities so it takes Tara inviting them to a family dinner for them to all figure out who the others are.

Also random things:

Terra loves to wind Grant up because he reacts more than Jason. Jason and Grant are the first to start getting along and bond over their shared interests like swords, hating Dick Grayson and some niche metal band no one else has ever heard of. Whilst Jason teaches them to meditate, Tara likes to move rocks until someone else notices. One time she made the ground she was sitting on hover up to ten feet in the air until Grant noticed (if you ask him, he’ll say he realised she was gone because it was too peaceful).

Sausage or Fwhip could be a Sausage could be the one confronting Pearl on this but I honestly want Gem to be the one confronting Pearl on this since she's manipulating the other two (and also because I'm homosexual and biased) and since it makes Gem a bit scary if executed properly. Idk if I wanna redeem the wra other than Pearl so I'll just leave it like 'don't betray us, I'm watching you'

(I kinda wanna have Gem, Fwhip and Sausage to be corrupted but not like corrupted by Xornoth or Exor, but like Fwhip already has his Redstone corruption and I wanna make Gem and Sausage's own magic corrupt them or blind them to the damage they're doing to others but then again I really wanna make the 3 full on villains)

According to the wiki, Pearl has a good relationship with Joel (because they trade with each other :p), they could have some kind on friendly relationship. Also her kingdom is close to House Blossom and Rivendell, so I could see the three of them having some kind of childhood friendship, because of some historical alliance between their empires. I love Gem being the one making sure that Pearl doesn't stray too far away from the WRA, I would like that her own corruption starts to strain their friendship, and Gem not realizing this.

I also would like to Joey still being a villain in this AU, because of his early alliance with Gem, I think it would be fun.

AND YES. Gem and Sausage getting their own magic corrupted, something like Sausage tries to find ways to get more powerful (as canon), but this time he gets the help of Gem, and doing some research, they start dipping a bit into dark magic, which they don't realize it's dark magic, as they found it in some ancient books, that even the Cliffs didn't have any registry on them, so Gem couldn't immediately identify them as dark magic.

I want my favourite mentally traumatised character to be redeemed and loved again, but I also want them to have terrible nightmares and live in constant fear of death (Tommy, Spamton, Joey). 

My favourite female character(s) shall be the humanisation of the word “strong” and beat everyone’s ass while also being very nice (Nikki, Noelle, Susie/Allison). 

the things happening in the au should be either canonically accurate or completely ooc, nothing in between

I also want the main person that interacts with my favourite character to be mysterious and physically strong, yet very gentle and supportive (Techno, Kris, Henry).

I shall also make all my favourite ships canon. Dot. (Schlatt/Quackity, Phil/Techno; Susie/Noelle; oh there’s so many of them in M&I)

And the only friend of my favourite character should become a total dick. If not, the main character shall do that (Tubbo, Mike, Joey instead of Henry).

Not fully, although I have written preplanned scenes where I thought "my readers are going to hate this >:)" I enjoy watching y'all freakout in the comments.

I feel like I do a pretty good job with layering characters. I try not to make any one character one dimensional since people don't work like that. So even antagonists like Superhero!AU Xornoth and Pirate!AU Joey still have some redeeming qualities to them, even if ultimately, they aren't redeemed.

I like them, although I don't actively seek them out, and I prefer longfics with first kiss scenes in them rather than like- one shots entirely dedicated to them, just because I like there to be buildup rather than just diving straight into "Oh, now they're kissing."

(WIP) “BATIM: Alternate Ending”

I've been thinking more and more about the game "Bendy and the Ink Machine," mainly the ending. I won't reveal it here for the sake of spoilers, but a lot of fans were really hoping for a more "happily ever after" kind of ending for Henry, Bendy, and the gang (except for Joey Drew, of course.) What if, by some update or DLC, we actually COULD redeem the Ink Demon?

Normally, I'd do this kind of comic with all drawings, but I wanna try something different; forming this as if it were actually a part of the game. IDK if I'll be using drawings or SFM models to make the characters, but I already got started on the beginning of this comic; during the heat of the climax of Chapter 5. I don't have a set date on when I'll finish this, but, unlike past projects, I want to actually finish this one.

Batim god au idea that came to me in a dream.

A large handful of the cast are literal gods, while some of them are still mortals who happen to come across them. Shenanigans ensue. Roles listed below.

Henry: Mortal, stumbled into the realm of gods by sheer accident and is sticking around because they like his company and their antics are a great well of inspiration for him to work with. So it’s a win-win.

Linda: Mortal, came into the realm of gods because she was looking for her missing husband and was relieved to learn that he was not dead.

Norman: (underworld god) God of knowledge, darkness, and the king of the underworld. Mostly keeps to himself as most of the other gods are intimidated by his titles, but doesn’t mind if others seek him out for his guidance. Does mind a lot if you try to steal from him.

Wally: (underworld god) God of death and the younger brother to the God of sleep. His job is basically to be the grim reaper but he is chipper about it because he is fascinated by the mortal world and will chat up both any mortals in the god realm and his clients when he brings them to Norman’s realm whenever he sees the chance.

Sammy: (underworld god) God of sleep and all it entails; dreams, nightmares, sleep-related conditions, you get the picture. (also the god of sheep, according to a handful of other gods, but he’s never to confirmed or denied it.), as well as the older brother of death. As he can and does sleepwalk, sleep talk, sleep with his eyes open, etc. The only reliable sign to tell if he’s awake or asleep is how he behaves as his awake self and sleeping self have very different personalities.

Lacie: (underworld god) Goddess of justice and revenge. Is in charge of designing and constructing the punishments for sinners as she sees fit but does not take pleasure in the suffering of the sinful souls.

Joey: Mortal, intentionally sought them out with the intentions to become a god himself. The gods keep him around because they’re morbidly curious about what would happen if he achieved his goal, but do not help him as enough of them kinda fear the outcome of that.

Susie: (heavens god) Goddess of music, light, and the queen of the heavens. A very chipper goddess who enjoys and seeks out the company of others, including the underworld gods who are used to being feared by everyone and don’t know how to deal with someone actively trying to befriend them.

Shawn: (heavens god) God of festivities and alcohol. A very loud and jolly god who causes the most chaos in the mortal world, but in a good way. The hands down worst god to go for for important advice.

Emma: (heavens god) Goddess of theater and dance, an aloof artist of a goddess who takes her job very seriously and disdains how the other heavenly gods handle their own work.

Jack: (heavens god) God of hope, patience, and endurance. Often heads down to the underworld to inspire the not-yet redeemed sinners and check on how the redeemed sinners are doing. He does not seek out the company of the underworld gods like Susie does but he doesn’t mind them, they’re just doing the jobs that need to be done whether people like it or not.

Grant: Mortal, has no idea how he managed to befriend two gods on accident but in hindsight, a lot of their advice makes a lot more sense now.

Bertrum: (deceased) Mortal, died due to a bad accident involving one of his rides and now lingers in the underworld trying to make the most of his afterlife. He gets along with the underworld gods just fine, but finds most of them to be bizarre.

Johnny: (deceased) Mortal, died due to a heart attack and secretly pines over some of the gods but doesn’t dare make the first move. Mostly hangs around Sammy and tends to his sheep.

Thomas: (underworld god) A god of machinery, used to be a heavens god before being banished to the underworld for not punishing his followers who sacrificed children to him. Does not get along with the other underworld gods for different reasons.

Allison: Mortal, is fascinated by the underworld and goes down there to explore it.

Dot: (heavens god) A goddess of truth and discovery who likes to get to the bottom of mysteries. She’s the one who travels to the underworld and human realm the most often out of the heavens gods.

Buddy: (???? god) A former mortal who achieved godhood through strange means, does not know what he’s the god of as he’s new to this. Misses his human life and often follows other gods around like a lost puppy.

I have a question, do you think it is ok to redeem Joey? Not in canon, but like, in aus and all, I saw some people(not gonna mention any names) saying that it could be brushing it under the rug all the actions Joey ever did, now I'm so confused, what do you think?

You can twist BATIM’s story to not be Joey’s fault at all if you wanted so tbh you can do all you want

Also this is a huge misconception that anyone is not redeemable because... everyone is. The thing about redemption is not OTHERS forgiving someone for what they’ve done but this bad character realizing they did wrong and want to change and try to change and do change, that’s redemption

Of course its ok to make a character try to redeem themselves, it never is not okay, no one needs to deserve redemption because this is something a character can only give to themselves, no matter if other characters actually forgive them or not, that’s beside the point

Truth Be told, I’ve always entertained the idea of a Bendy story where He was redeemed & Freed from His inky Prison & was shown love, Kindness & was treated as Family. But, because of His dual nature & Powers of Being a Living Cartoon Character & The Ink Demon. Plus the Memories & Trauma of His former Life, imprisonment & Treatment from Joey Drew. He may want to Make a difference in the world.

Well, yes, I am going for it. Haha. Though Bendy can transform into his former forms from when he was a monster, he’s essentially not a “demon” anymore, not like before. He is finally given love and a family and a soul. While Joey used real human souls to attempt to bring the toons to life, Henry was able to perfect them by giving them the souls they were meant to have: the love of creator to his creation, the heart of the artist who made them. The kind of difference Bendy wants to make is by being the cartoon he was drawn to be, bringing joy to people the way Henry designed him. Even though Bendy retains the memories, the Ink Demon is gone, replaced by the lovable dancing devil. At least that’s the thought behind my AU. The toons, how they were meant to be all along, being able to see the real world.
