Blu. You're telling me you call the tiny lobsters that make dirt pillars. that are made into a landlocked seafood boil with potatoes and corn. Crawfish? They're crawdads!! /lh /hj
Technically they're yabbies (if they're blue) or redclaws (if they're blue with a red claw stripe) where I'm from but my family (in the sense of my dad and brothers) call them crawfish. Cuz we're from Oklahoma originally (or at least my grandfather is and me and my brothers have adopted much lingo from my dad who adopted it from grandad).
I prefer redclaw or yabby cuz they're more fun to say. Specifically "yabby".

FFXIV Write Entry #3: The Ink on Your Soul
Prompt: reclamation (free write!) || Master Post || On AO3
Essentially a followup to some of the aftermath of "The Long Road Home" from last year's FFXIV Write.
--
The first tattoos that Synnove has restored, once she’s deemed healthy enough to handle it, are the most important: her clan marks.
Oh, her arcanima sleeves and her compass rose style backpiece will be redone, in time, but her clan marks? They are as integral to her identity as her own name.
This is one of the few ways in which the House Greywolfe—like its progenitor House Wolfe—is traditionalist: for every new member of the family, the matriarch will pick a set of marks for them to wear in the house color. Rohesia had been a Greywolfe by marriage, but that still made her head of the family by Greywolfe custom, and it had been she who had chosen the marks Synnove bore all her life, she who had first applied them in a mix of pigment and clay on her forehead and nose when Synnove was but a few days old.
For those Gyr Abanians who still follow the practice of clan marks, the paint is usually enough. But at sixteen, one was allowed to have the marks permanently tattooed into their skin, should they so choose. And that was what Synnove had chosen.
In those first days of consciousness after the aversion of the Final Day, standing in a Sharlayan hospital bathroom and seeing her reflection in the mirror, Synnove had not recognized her own face.
It was fortunate that it had been Aunt Angharad who was with her at the time; Synnove had frozen, eyes going too-wide and pupils dilating into pinpricks, a violent tremble overtaking her at the sight of her strange, blank skin, unable to speak. Galette’s shriek of alarm was what had her aunt skidding into the room, and the older woman had taken one look at her, gone pale, and immediately turned to fetch a tin of her own facepaint. Auntie usually wore only her Redclawe marks, but Grandmother had chosen a set of Greywolfe ones for her upon her marriage to compliment her birth ones, and Auntie’s paint tin contained both red and grey pigments. It wasn’t until Auntie had drawn Synnove’s marks onto her skin for her that Synnove had finally calmed down.
But she wouldn’t feel wholly at home in her own skin again until the marks were permanent.
So today she is laying on her back in Atheleys Wyght’s workroom in Limsa Lominsa, patiently waiting while the old tattoo mistress mixes the pigments that would be embedded in her skin.
Synnove had lain on this same table when she was sixteen and Atheleys’s hair was black streaked with white rather than white streaked with black. Atheleys herself hadn’t originally been a full-time tattoo mistress in the old Gyr Abanian tradition, but she had been a member of a large mercenary company wintering in Limsa Lominsa when Ala Mhigo had fallen to the Garleans and like many of her fellow sellswords, had decided to take up other work in her new home. She worked strictly in Gyr Abanian styles—clan marks and battle honors and skin stories—and strictly with mallet and hafted needles made of adamantoise shell. Most would assume her clientele would be limited, but Synnove wasn’t Atheleys’s first customer to return with skin made bare from an overflow of conjury so potent it made no distinction of what perceived flaws to heal.
Finally, Atheleys leans over her, holding a piece of wood wrapped in leather in her hand, one bushy white eyebrow raised. Synnove shakes her head; she had needed it when she was sixteen, biting down hard in a futile attempt to distract herself from the pain, but now, at nearly thirty-three?
She’s known worse.
Atheleys sets the bit aside and picked up the haft; Synnove feels the points of the adamantoise needle settle on the bridge of her nose.
Synnove takes a deep breath, and lets it out slowly but steadily. Atheleys brings her mallet down on the haft, and pain explodes in the middle of her nose, radiating out into the rest of her face through the bone.
The outlines first, first the nose mark and then the curving dot on her forehead, the radiating pain causing her head to throb despite the willowbark tea she had drunk upon arriving. As she had when she was sixteen, Synnove thinks a prayer to her grandmother in thanks for granting her a distinctive but small set of clan marks. Not for long, though, for Atheleys hums as she works, a wordless Gyr Abanian tune that soon has Synnove drifting into a mediative state, even when the tattoo mistress begins to shade in the outlines and the sharp, piercing pain is replaced by constant scraping in its stead.
It still has nothing on being nearly gutted by a sword.
Synnove is brought back to full awareness when the sting of witch hazel swipes across her brow and down her nose, and she blinks once, twice, a third time to focus her gaze on Atheleys’s own. The tattoo mistress wears satisfaction like a mantle.
She takes a moment to let her body settle, the pain fading into a dull throb across her face, then pushes herself slowly, carefully, upright. The room swims for a moment after being so long on her back, but she gives herself the time to calm. Once it does, she swings her legs over the side of the table to sit on its side. And in doing so, face the mirror on the opposite wall.
Synnove stares at herself. She’s still too thin, her skin still a washed out brown rather than a healthy bronze, her dark brown hair—no dye, it’s been too troublesome to keep applying during her convalescence—still mostly brittle and prone to breaking in ways that frustrate her attempts to put it in a proper set of braids. Recovery is still a long road before her.
But there is grey is on her forehead, and across the bridge of her nose. Despite the enflamed skin around her clan marks, her face is hers once more.
Synnove smiles.

WindClan Year 1 Newleaf
Notes: a * next to a character’s gender descriptor means they’re trans. Charlie is used to indicate nonbinary cats. If a cat is referred to as a charlie-tom* or a charlie-molly*, it means the more binary part of their gender does not align with what they were originally assigned. Tolly is used to indicate a cat who is both a tom and a molly, either simultaneously or separately, static or fluid. A character is referred to as their birth gender, as they are a kit who hasn’t discovered their identity yet (and in this case will not discover it until adulthood); their true identity is in parentheses next to their birth gender

Barkface
Tom - 49 moons - Windclan Medic
Gale: Calming Mist - Barkface is able to exhale a cloud of cool and pleasant-smelling mist out of his mouth. After being exhaled, the mist continues to stay in the air a tail-length away from the ground, but it can be moved by air currents. This mist has a calming and numbing effect on cats that breathe it in, and somewhat helps soothe pain when it touches a cat’s body around where it is currently hurting.
Son of Brackenwing † and Redclaw
Adoptive son of Crowfur
Brother of Shrewclaw †
Barkface is a melancholic and highly spiritual cat, who finds solace in knowing that those who have passed away are still watching over the living. Though originally he wanted to become a messenger at all costs, he found his true calling in the arts of medicine thanks to his patience and generally pleasant demeanor. He fully believes that ailments of the mind and soul are just as important to treat as ailments of the body, and as such he’s dedicated himself to learning of ways to treat those afflicted by them. Very perceptive of how other cats are truly feeling, though he himself would rather stifle his own emotions so as to not distract himself from his work.

Dark Forest Resident: Foxflake
Tumblr media
Aliases / Nicknames: Foxheart, Redclaws, Tyrant
Gender: molly
Sexuality: homosexual, aromantic
Family: Heatherflight (mother), Geraniumbloom (queerplatonic mate), several infatuations
Other Relations: unnamed apprentice
Clan: Windclan, Thunderclan
Rank: deputy
Characteristics: kills in order to test her fighting capabilities
Number of Victims: 50+
Number of Murders: 50+
Murder Method: throat slitting, snapping necks via bite
Known Victims: several unnamed kittypets
Cause of Death: injuries caused by a dog attack
Cautionary Tale: N/A
Story:
Foxkit was originally born in Windclan to a molly named Heatherflight. Her father, a Thunderclan tom, was furious that Heatherflight wouldn’t let him take his kit to be raised in Thunderclan. The leader and who happened to be her father’s brother, agreed to a raid in order to retrieve Foxkit.
This raid was unsuccessfu, resulting in the death of her father. Thunderclan brought up his death at the next gathering and demanded Foxkit as compensation. Windclan was forced to hand her over despite her desperate pleading to stay.
She grew up in a hostile environment. All the other kits would whisper about her not being worth all the trouble they went through for her. A bitterness grew inside young Foxkit, and she vowed to make sure she’d show Windclan and Thunderclan that she’s strong enough to have been worth fighting to keep, and strong enough to have.
Foxpaw was weaker that the other, stockier apprentices. But she was fast and nimble. She would spend endless hours working on her stamina so that she could outlast her opponents.
Eventually she got bored of that, and decided she needed to think bigger. So she started training in the Dark Forest. That’s where she learnt moves from Windclan cats, Skyclan cats, and Shadowclan cats. She would use these against the other apprentices, which quickly earned her some attention.
Foxflake was ambitious and quiet, always plotting her next move. The only one she seemed to speak to was her queerplatonic mate, Geraniumbloom. And even then, she was quiet. Foxflake, despite her cold disposition, often lead patrols.
 She hated walking the Windclan border since it reminded her of how easily her birth clan had given her up.
Her anger bit away at her, gnawing at  her mind. She never seemed satisfied with her strength and speed. So one night, she followed her Dark Forest mentor to the Twolegplace, where she got her first kill in an ambush.
The taste of blood and the feeling of power sent her reeling. Dark stars, she craved more. She would seek out the strongest looking cats so that she could fight and kill them.
Her leader chose her to be the new deputy due to her quick thinking and her strength.
Nobody knew that she would sneak out at night in order to kill kittypets. She became more busy when she became deputy, so she wasn’t able to sneak away at night so often as she did before. At First.
But she figured out a way.
When she finally got time to herself, she headed out of the camp through the dirtplace, as was the usual...routine. Since it had been roughly a moon since she had gone on an ‘adventure,’ she decided to stretch and loosen up. This consisted of running through the trees. This time, however, she tripped over a branch and twisted her paw.
Foxflake shrugged it off, overconfident in herself. She wandered deeper into the city than she even had before. She didn’t know the layout of this new area, so when a group of stray dogs spotted her, all she could do was run.
She tried her best to get away, but her paw failed her, sending her face first into the asphalt. The dogs caught up to her and, although she eventually got away, she was far too injured to survive. Foxflake died just outside of Thunderclan territory at the age of 39 moons.
Additional Information:
--Submission by @liberhoe ! Random thing, but congrats on Foxflake being the 60th overall character to be added!
This was 99% written by them, I just added a few things for dramatic affect (use of the words ‘routine’ and ‘gnawing,’ nothing major of course!).
--Gotta wonder who those Dark Forest mentors were

(( obviously 🐱 for my JodyBee anD... Ryan ))
Jodybadody - Starkit Redclaw
I imagine her as a dark reddish bicolour cat. She was named Redkit because of her curse and the colour red associated with it, and claw as a suffix because she’s a good fighter
Ryan - Original name lost in time, but he now calls himself Moonstar (warrior name Moonheart, again picked)
However if I WERE TO NAME HIM it would be Shadewhisker
This is well for a very clear reason, but I imagine him as a broken marble tabby cat, but calico (similar to Sol) mostly with deep browns and reds and a good stark white. He picked the name Moon because traditionally, Moon is a name rarely used and is heavily associated with Starclan

A Soul Seven Times Rejoined
I've been wanting to do this since the end of ShB, so unless SE comes and shows us what these individuals "actually" were like at the time of their rejoinings, here’s my take on the seven souls from the other reflections now rejoined to Ahru. They’ll be ordered chronologically by Calamity following this theory thread.
Needless to say, implied/heavy 5.0 spoilers, but this is all just inspired headcanon. Most of these characters don’t fit any naming conventions either cuz we have no idea what naming conventions would be on these other reflections.
Tumblr media
Amaurot - Persephone - The original soul as it was, once whole. A kind and warm individual, she delighted in the arts and aiding others. At times seen as something of an eccentric for her methods, she was nevertheless held in high regard.
Tumblr media
1st Umbral Calamity - Fifth Reflection - Kasra Drakenvale; a gentle free-spirit who very much resembled Persephone. She was loath to take up arms, even in defense, when the world came crumbling down leaving her with no other choice. It was then she left her home, never allowed to return, no matter the reasons... a decision that broke her heart until her dying day.
Tumblr media
2nd Umbral Calamity - Twelfth Reflection - Amalia Mistheart; Orphaned at a young age she quickly made a name for herself with a band of her fellows - the most of whom grew to be known as terror on the seas and in the skies alike. On the contrary of this reputation, however, she cared deeply for those close to her, had grand, romantic dreams, and was known for being very... creative.
Tumblr media
3rd Umbral Calamity - Second Reflection - Firi of the Starsong; a curious woman of a curious people, they held bare fragments of a faith in a dark, crystalline God. They revered the night and the black places of the earth, though this, of course, did not save them from destruction.
Tumblr media
4th Umbral Calamity - Third Reflection - Miklos Benett; A clumsy, rough-around-the-edges sort who often got himself into more trouble than ever planned - or sometimes even realized. Despite having his heart in the right place, he typically ended up getting dragged into trouble with the wrong sorts.
Tumblr media
5th Umbral Calamity - Sixth Reflection - Roni the Redclaw; The typical ‘gentle giant’, he was a mercenary by trade. Well-loved by his fellows, he never led them into a battle they could not win...
Tumblr media
6th Umbral Calamity - Tenth Reflection - Lor Ruahk; A quiet, austere individual plagued by dark and desperate visions. Even among their reclusive clan, they kept to their own company more than most, plagued by loneliness, doubt, and indecision...
Tumblr media
7th Umbral Calamity - Seventh Reflection - Eria Sitri; One of perhaps the truest shards of Persephone, she was strong-willed, kind, and worked hard to help others and restore balance - ultimately giving her life for a cause that would be lost.

And we have a CHAPTER UPDATE for Kylara’s Origins! HUZZAH!
I know it has been many months... but Real Life sometimes has to take priority (In a perfect world, RL would just sort itself out, while I write in peace and contentment! Lol!)
I got some WONDERFUL art to go with the chapter by the amazing @samusdraws (Thank you so VERY MUCH!!)
When we last left our group, Kylara, Wynne, and Zevran had woken to find Alistair missing from their camp! Chapter 38 begins their search!
~~~~~
Sweat dripped down and stung his eyes as Alistair staggered east. His armor was only half on – he had only buckled one side of the metal chest plate – and he was barely holding onto his sword and shield.
Maker, what is wrong with me? Last night I was feeling fine. A tired, half-smile briefly appeared on his face. Well, better than fine last night. He paused and leaned against a tree. Now I feel sick again. I should have stayed at the camp… but I feel something pulling me… calling me…
A sudden wave of nausea caused him to drop to his knees and his sword fell from his limp hand. What little food he’d consumed the night before violently emptied from his stomach to the leafy ground.
When there was nothing left, Alistair carefully stood up, took in a few deep gulps of air, and continued following the call in his head. He never noticed that he left his sword and shield on the ground nearby.
Strange, Redclaw thought. From what Wildstorm told me, this man was infected some time ago… yet he still has not fully changed. Well, no matter. At the state he is in now, it shan’t be long. Too bad for his mate, though. Wildstorm said she wasn’t bad looking… for a human.
Redclaw briefly left Alistair stumbling eastward towards their lair. Not too far behind him were the other two humans and the elf. Redclaw stared at the young woman. She is an interesting one. There is a wildness to her that would suit us. Perhaps The Lady will allow us to change her too? Then she could stay with her mate…
“What are you doing here, Redclaw?” a dark-striped werewolf growled. “You are supposed to be watching the man.”
“I was… I mean, I am, Shadowbane. I just wanted to see where the others were.”
“That is my job. Now get back to him. Make sure he gets to our lair. I need to make sure that these three… do not.”
With a half-hearted snarl, Redclaw nodded and loped off.
“So let me get this straight,” Wynne said slowly as we headed eastward down the trail. “You were out in the rain kissing Alistair… and then he howled?”
Zev sniggered. “Knowing those two, Wynne, I am sure there was a lot more than kissing involved.”
Wynne blushed bright pink. “Even if there were, Zevran, that is between her and Alistair… It is none of our business!”
Though I blushed as well, I ignored Zevran and replied to Wynne. “Yes… It was so eerie. After he did that, there were resounding howls from werewolves deep in the forest. Then before he led me back to camp, he mentioned Witherfang and spoke of someone called The Lady. He said they were one and the same… like nature. He spoke of a lot of strange things. I fear he was somehow infected, Wynne!”
“Did you ask him if he was?”
“Of course I did! He said he was fine and that I was worrying too much… but then he disappears from camp… and…” I trailed off, seeing something glinting in the morning light. I ran over to it.
Zevran caught up to me first. “What is it, Kylara?”
“Ali’s sword and shield,” I fell to my knees. “He’d never leave them behind.”
“Perhaps he was ambushed by the weres?” Wynne asked.
“There is no sign of a struggle. No other tracks nearby.” Zevran replied. “And… ugh. There is a puddle of sick over here.”
“He is infected then!” I said as tears ran down my cheeks. “Remember what Lanaya told us? If infected, we’d begin to sweat, vomit, and our temper will become wild and uncontrollable. Ali has been showing those signs for days now… and we didn’t notice!”
“When did he…” Wynne began to ask, but I already knew.
“It was when he moved Danyla’s corpse! Her claws scratched his neck! Remember the wound I saw on him back then?”
“It was such a small cut though! Had I known something so insignificant could have potentially carried the infection, I would have been more careful,” Wynne bemoaned.
My friend wrote a book!
New York, 1955. Former socialite Henrietta ("Rhett") Bishop, destitute after her father gambles away the family fortune, takes a job at Redclaw Security. But Redclaw is no ordinary operation. Part detective firm and part enforcement agency, Redclaw regulates matters involving the growing population of shifters who have emerged since the onset of the nuclear age. Peter Knight is a nuclear scientist shattered by the death of his wife. Blacklisted by the government and scientific organizations, he drowns his sorrows while searching for the people behind his wife's murder. When Rhett is assigned to recruit Knight, their meeting is more than either bargained for—a rival organization will do anything to secure Knight for themselves. Following a lead to locate a missing cache of alien technology stolen from Redclaw, Rhett is thrown back into her previous glittering life with Knight as her pretend boyfriend. But when someone from the past turns up to start a bidding war on the artifacts, Bishop and Knight wind up in a fight for their very lives.
She writes really well. Her book has great atmosphere: it feels like 1955, if that makes sense. The characters are interesting and unique. The romance is a slow burn and very realistic given the characters. The author also has a couple books set in this ‘verse, though they’re set in a modern time period.
It’s only $3.99!
Please give it a try.
Cathuman Headcanons - Part 2
I guess this is a 'part two' to my first cathuman headcanon post, focusing more on genetics and physiology of the characters. Admittedly I've been iffy sharing them, because there's no way to please everyone, as people have their different interpretations. And, these are mine. Please be nice. Please?
Spoilers for later books and The Broken Code Below.
ThunderClan are the British Isles and America. Some have 0.0001% Scandinavian in them (which represents ancient SkyClan blood before SkyClan were forced out). Occasionally you get some French and German in there.
ShadowClan are Eastern Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. Sometimes you get Northern Africa.
WindClan are Eastern and South-eastern Asia. WindClan is a very uniform population, so the variety does not differ that much. Surprisingly, there is a more Eastern Asian population than South-eastern.
RiverClan are the Caribbean, Central and South America, and the Mediterranean.
SkyClan was originally ancient Northern Europe, but the new SkyClan is a mix of places. It ranges from Northern Europe and Africa to Australia.
-
ThunderClan
Thunder was half Scandinavian (Clear Sky), half Roman (Storm).
Firestar is half English, half Irish. When he gets mad, his voice gets an Irish lilt to it, something that tickles Sandstorm to bits.
Jake, his father was 100% Irish. Tallstar absolutely loved his accent, and never got tired of him talking.
Hollypelt and Ravenwing are siblings. Both are from Somalia, and passed down their genetic traits to their offspring (Fuzzypelt, Moonflower and Goosefeather). They then passed their genetic traits to Bluestar, Snowfur, and all of Robinwing's kits.
Windflight's father was Chinese. Thistleclaw, Rosetail, Sweetpaw, Dappletail, Thrushpelt and Tawnyspots are all 1/4th.
Stonepelt was Stormtail's father, and was Russian. Stormtail passed down his genetics to his kits, making them 50% Russian, 25% African, 25% English (+ other Western Europe countries). This combination made a very unique physical appearance.
Smallear is half Scottish (Scottish fold, hah!), half Spanish. His kits, Lionheart and Goldenflower are 1/4th Spanish, and since I headcanon he's also Graystripe's father, that makes Graystripe (in my headcanon) 1/4th Spanish as well.
Halftail and Robinwing I headcanon as siblings, and they're both 1/2 Greek. Their kits, Mousefur and Runningwind, and the whole slew of Robinwing's kits are 1/4th Greek.
This makes Dustpelt, Ravenpaw, Frostfur, and Brindleface 1/4th African, 1/4th Greek, 1/4th English + other.
Adderfang has ancient Scandinavian (SkyClan) blood in him, and passed it down to all his following generations.
Leafpool had kids with Crowfeather, who was primarily Japanese. This makes Hollyleaf, Jayfeather and Lionblaze 50% Asian. Hollyleaf and Jayfeather (somewhat) looked extremely similar to Crowfeather, which confused the ThunderClanners. The tall tale Squirrelflight spun is that she thought Leopardfoot was like 3% Asian, and maybe Hollyleaf inherited that 3% by sheer luck. Surprisingly, the clan believed it.
(But in reality, a lot of ThunderClan thought Squirrelflight had kits with a WindClan cat, and was trying to hide that fact. They never thought a sacred medicine cat might be the mother.)
By extension, Lionblaze's kits are 1/4th Japanese.
Millie is from Greece. Graystripe ended up meeting her there. Her kits are 50%. And Blossomfall's kits are 1/4th.
(Somehow Blossomfall was born with vitiligo, as she has lighter colored patches on her shoulders and back.)
Cloudtail's father was from Sweden. Cloudtail is 50% Swedish, and his kits are 1/4th Swedish.
Daisy is from South America (Argentina). She got with Smoky, who was from Mexico. Their kits are 50/50 each. Berrynose's kits, Cherryfall and Molewhisker are both 1/4th Mexican and South American. Berrynose, Hazeltail and Mousewhisker are all bilingual.
-
ShadowClan
Tall Shadow was from Scandinavia the Germanic tribes. She lived in the bitter North and had quite the pale complexion.
Yellowfang is 1/4th Iranian, 1/2 Russian, 1/4th Polish. Her mother was 50% Iranian, and her grandfather was 100%. Silverflame got with a Persian! Eh, eh? I'll see my out.
Russetfur was 100% Iranian.
Spottedpelt and Gorseclaw, Cloudstar and Birdwing's kits, stayed behind as the last remaining bloodline containing Northern Europe. Their line continues on in very small percentages today.
Patchfoot is 100% Finnish. His and Clovertail's kits are 50% Finnish, 45% Swedish, 6% Mediterranean.
Finleap's father is Sandynose, making Finleap 25% Finish. Eh? Eh? Walks away in shame
The best places to eat fresh seafood in and around Cairns
Tropical North Queensland has hundreds of kilometres of coastline starting at Mission Beach in the south and ending at Torres Strait in the north. It’s where barramundi, coral trout and prawns are listed as top exports and there’s even a town called Flying Fish Point, on the mouth of the Johnstone River.
While casual fish and chip shops still pepper the coastline – enticing you to sample the region’s fresh seafood by the shore – the local food scene has changed and evolved.
Here are 7 of the best places to eat seafood in and around Cairns.
Dundee’s Restaurant on the Waterfront, Cairns
Dundee’s Restaurant on the Waterfront has been a local institution for about three decades. Back in the ’90s, it’s where fat-cat politicians, lawyers and journalists used to sit in their power suits over long, languorous lunches. While the restaurant has long since upped stumps from its original location – it’s now beneath Cairns Harbour Lights Hotel – you can’t come to Dundee’s and not have seafood.
Diners eddy and flow here all day, along with the tide, while overlooking glistening water and fleets of fishermen, flitting to and from the reef. Keep it simple with a bucket of bugs and prawns or go for the Ultimate Seafood Experience, an opulent tower of mud crab, yabbies, prawns, oysters, scallops, bug tails, lobster, calamari and mussels.
You can also anchor yourself to a table at Dundee’s at the Cairns Aquarium, where you can admire the shellfish, crustaceans and oceanic creatures you are about to ingest. This is for serious pescatarians only.
Nu Nu, Palm Cove
These days, in tropical North Queensland, chefs such as Nu Nu’s Nick Holloway create sophisticated seafood dishes such as wok-fried North Queensland mud crab, with tamarind, sweet pork, market greens, jasmine rice and ginger broth.
A table on the expansive deck at Holloway’s lauded Palm Cove restaurant, mentioned in our favourite restaurants list, is prime real estate as it overlooks the Coral Sea and Double Island and a stand of Insta-friendly palm trees that bend into the wind.
Osprey’s Restaurant, Port Douglas
Motor further north, past Kewarra Beach, to find Osprey’s Restaurant at Thala Beach Nature Reserve. The restaurant, which is named after the large fish-eating bird of prey, the osprey, is perched on the headland like an eyrie offering views over the Coral Sea, garbed in a velvety swathe of blue.
Order the line-caught yellowfin tuna tataki with tempura ginger nori roll to start and the reef fish of the day with tom yum sweet potato, coconut rice, cassava and Asian herb salad to finish.
Salsa Bar & Grill, Port Douglas
The food at Salsa Bar & Grill in Port Douglas also sails beyond the beachside classic of fish crumbed and battered with a pile of chips on the side.
Keep it simple with Old Bay spice school prawns with chilli and charred lime aioli, salt and pepper calamari and linguine pepperincino with a flashy little fry-up of Tableland red claw.
Flames of the Forest, Port Douglas
The gorgeously styled Flames of the Forest is listed as one of the best food experiences in Queensland. It’s where you will find a dining room set up on the forest floor under trees festooned with flickering fairy lights in Australia’s only rainforest dining experience. It’s as far away from a fast-paced dining scene as you will get and as romantic and charming as a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Tuck in at a communal tables of 10 amongst locals and visitors and enjoy locally sourced seafood in dishes such as pan-seared coral trout on sautéed seasonal greens with a lemon myrtle beurre blanc and house-made prawn tortellini.
The Beach Shack, Kewarra Beach
The Beach Shack, located near to Kewarra Beach Resort and Spa, is a seasonal eatery that opens May to January 1, in the dry season.
Follow the footprints in the sand along Kewarra Beach and watch the wind riffle the palm trees as you wait for a dozen oysters to be shucked to order.
Prawn Star, Cairns
The best thing about eating seafood in Cairns is that you can choose to scrimp or splurge. The Esplanade is still a top spot to enjoy a casual seafood dinner and Prawn Star on the harbour-facing side of the city – Marlin Marina – is squarely aimed at those who like to keep it casual.
Hearty eaters should opt for the share platter of prawns onboard the rustic eat-in trawler. Sit and sip on a cheap-as-chips beer and toast to fresh seafood in and around Cairns and how far the food scene here has come.
TOP 3 TAKEAWAY SEAFOOD OPTIONS
Ocean World Seafood Market: This locally-owned business has been operating for almost two decades. Locals will always refer this place for its fresh seafood. Trust in their wisdom and order local wild-caught barramundi and a few crumbed prawn cutlets.
Apex Milk Bar: Trace the route of the local high-vis colony of tradies and you will find them communicating like a bunch of squawking seagulls about where to source their fish for lunch. The squawks become deafening near to the Apex Milk Bar where they gather for a Far North Fish Burger (mackerel, tartare, cheese, pineapple and jalapeños).
Prawn Star Cairns: There are now a total of three Prawn Stars barnacled onto the D Finger Wharf at the Marlin Marina. Visit one of the trawlers to eat A-grade prawns, mud crabs and painted crays served with seafood sauce.
WHERE TO BUY FRESH SEAFOOD IN CAIRNS
AquaVerde Redclaw: Visit this hatchery and farm on the Atherton Tablelands to purchase native freshwater crayfish.
Ocean World Seafood Market: Local red claw, mud crabs, crayfish, barramundi and prawns make regular appearances at this restaurant where the counter is always cramped with locals and travellers.
Preston Fresh Seafood: If chef Nick Holloway, of Palm Cove’s Nu Nu, gets his seafood from Preston Fresh in Smithfield, then you know you’re onto a good thing. Live mud crabs are available in store along with fresh line-caught reef fish.
