If you work with felt or wool or any other natural fibres, you may be wondering how you can dye them without introducing chemicals and difficult processes. Well, look no further than SOLAR DYEING!
Process:
- Pretreat fibre (aka mordant) with alum to make the color stick
- Put wet fibres in a sealable glass jar with fresh or dried plant material
- Leave in the sun for 2-3 weeks (depending on how much sun your jars get you can go shorter or longer!)
- Rinse out your fibres
Check out the video to see these plants in action:
- Marigold
- Red Clover
- Golden Rod
- Hibiscus
- Purple Loosestrife
- Curly Dock
- Red Hopi Amaranth
- Stinging Nettle
The results may just surprise you...!

Seeds and their People is the theme of our wall calendar this year! It’s our seventh year making calendars and several people suggested that we show more people with their beloved plants. You can preorder today! We will finish the design and printing and start shipping calendars in a few weeks. On the cover: Julia Aguilar in a sea of Golden Red Amaranth and Hill Country Okra. As a child of an Ecuadorian immigrant, amaranth is one of their many ancestral food plants that they are reconnecting with through their seed keeping at Truelove Seeds and beyond. This particular variety is golden-seeded and comes from seed keeper friends in Taos, New Mexico who accidentally crossed Golden Amaranth with a Hopi Red variety, sparking new life into this ancestral Indigenous American grain. We love it. We will be featuring many of our coworkers and grower friends, and also a few months of culturally important and beautiful food plants on their own. Thank you as always for your support! #seedkeeping (To pre-order, click on the product tag in IG or FB, or visit the print shop at www.trueloveseeds.com - link in bio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVfxyj4ryAv/?utm_medium=tumblr

so the official™ list of plants i'm growing in my dye garden this year are echinacea, cornflowers, amaranth/hopi red dye, tangerine gem marigolds, chinese forget me nots, dyers coreopsis, and woad. this will give me an array of colours from yellow to reddish orange to sage green to purplish blue, indigo blue, and brown :-)
i'm also planting black elderberries but their seeds require a long period of hot then cold stratification (approx. 5 months) and i started that process too late so i'm going to sow indoors and transplant the shrub outdoors next spring, that way i'll have elderberries for next summer

Your flower highlight of the day is Amaranthus.  I just learned it has edible parts and is also called, "Love lies bleeding."  Very neat. 🌺 Do you have your Floral Facemasks yet?  We have them available in our menu for you at: aNaturalDesign.com 🌺 https://pixels.com/featured/blue-orchid-holly-berry.html?product=face-mask 🌺 Wikipedia Amaranthus caudatus "Kiwicha" redirects here. For the mountain in Peru named Kiwicha, see Kiwicha (Peru). Amaranthus caudatus is a species of annual flowering plant. It goes by common names such as love-lies-bleeding,[2] pendant amaranth,[citation needed] tassel flower,[2] velvet flower,[2] foxtail amaranth,[2] and quilete.[citation needed] Love-lies-bleeding 3836 - Amaranthus caudatus (Zieramaranth).JPG Amaranthus caudatus growing in the #Botanical Garden, Bremen Scientific classification Kingdom: Plantae Clade: Tracheophytes Clade: Angiosperms Clade: Eudicots Order: Caryophyllales Family: Amaranthaceae Genus: Amaranthus Species: A. caudatus Binomial name Amaranthus caudatus L. Synonyms[1] List Amaranthus abyssinicus L.H.Bailey Amaranthus alopecurus Hochst. ex A.Br. & C.D.Bouché Amaranthus cararu Moq. Amaranthus dussii Sprenger Amaranthus edulis Speg. Amaranthus leucocarpus S.Watson Amaranthus leucospermus S.Watson nom. illeg. Amaranthus mantegazzianus Pass. Amaranthus maximus Mill. Amaranthus pendulinus Moq. Amaranthus pendulus Moq. Euxolus arvensis Rojas Acosta 🌺 Many parts of the plants, including the leaves and seeds, are edible, and are frequently used as a source of food in India and South America – where it is the most important Andean species of Amaranthus, known as kiwicha. (see also Amaranth seed and Andean ancient plants) This species, as with many other of the amaranths, is originally from the American tropics. The exact origin is unknown, as A. caudatus is believed to be a wild Amaranthus hybridus aggregate. The red color of the inflorescences is due to a high content of betacyanins, as in the related species known as "Hopi red dye" amaranth. Ornamental garden varieties sold under the latter name are either Amaranthus cruentus or a hybrid between A. cruentus and Amar (at Bothell, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDWyNZkl2RN/?igshid=vsfbira87qo9

Turmeric planted with Black Cherry and Santa Rosa tomatoes. A few Hopi Red Amaranth on top of the baby Miller potatoes planted in a stripe down the middle. Gotta make sure the vegetables aren’t lonely!

Gravel Pit Gardening
My favorite thing to do this time of year is watch the plants grow!  And go to the beach.  We grow plenty of rocks and chickens ‘round these parts - we’re starting to figure out plants pretty good, too!
The first photo shows some Hopi Red Dye Amaranth seedlings that I am pretty excited about.  The seeds were a couple of years old, so I planted all of them - looks like they must’ve all germinated.  Whoo!

Golden Red Amaranth laid out to dry on a row that I'm solarizing. The weather looks hot and dry for the next couple days so I'm going to risk having it exposed like this. The seed came from my friend Miguel, who grew Golden Amaranth on one side of his house (in Taos), and Hopi Red on the other, and this cross happened. It's very beautiful, especially in its prime! Crossing fingers that no precipitation or dew causes rot! #goldenamaranth #hopiredamaranth #goldenredamaranth #seedsaving #seedkeeping #amaranth #amaranthseeds (at Delaware County, Pennsylvania)
