i'm a bulgarian who never had a chance to live in bulgaria, i'm gonna go to bulgaria for summer and where should i visit (except sofia, shumen, balchik botanicheska gradina and varna)? thank you ^^
There are so many places, really… I recommend Plovdiv, the old town is gorgeous, and of course Veliko Tarnovo, because it’s the old capital and Tsarevets is there:) Ruse is also quite pretty, sometimes called “the little Vienna”.
You also might want to check out some of the smaller towns and villages that function as open-air museums: Zheravna, Koprivshtitsa, Melnik, Etara, Tryavna, Shiroka Laka etc. Also, on the Black sea coast there’s Nesebar and Sozopol, which along with Serdika(Sofia) and Plovdiv are some of the most ancient, still inhabited settlements in Europe.
On the same historical note, the Shipka monument and the Madara Rider are very important, and if you’d like to visit some religious centers, you ought to start with the Rila Monastery (and then perhaps the Bachkovo and Troyan ones).
Nature-based tourism is also pretty huge in Bulgaria - there’s the Belogradchik Rocks, Cape Kaliakra (these two double as historical sites because of the fortresses built on them), Rayskoto Praskalo (highest waterfall on the peninsula), the Seven Rila Lakes, the Wonderful Bridges, a whole lot of caves (Devil’s Throat, Devetashka, Ledenika, Magurata, etc.), the Trigrad Gorge and plenty more natural phenomena if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
I know this is all very chaotic, sorry. I’m just listing things off the top of my head, though really, every town and place has it’s own unique charm and it’s impossible to summarize in one post, let alone explore all over the course of a single trip… but you’re invited to visit as many times as you like;)
