Indian-American singer Raveena Aurora on paying tribute to her motherland at Lollapalooza India
With a fairy-like twirl and a twinkle in her eyes, Raveena Aurora floats on stage at Lollapalooza India, in Mumbai this past weekend. In an iridescent, shimmery dress, with her hair tied in a wavy ponytail, the 29-year-old Indian-American singer, holds onto a mic covered with pink and purple flowers, and croons one of her most popular songs, “Honey…,” her dreamy voice washing over the crowd. For…

Music Monday (5-13-19)
Tumblr media
Well look at that, it’s my final five brain cells making this post.
New Releases
The River by AURORA: What can I say? It’s AURORA. This song is drenched in her signature mystical flair, complete with sparkling piano lines and smooth synths, and AURORA’s voice soars over the instrumental with absolute ease. I’m so excited for upcoming album I can’t even put it into words. Catch up with her recent singles and you’ll be hyped too.
pills by Elohim: So I wasn’t aware that Elohim was going to drop an album this week, short and sweet at seven tracks but still a pretty cool listen all together. This song takes a break from the harder-hitting beats that most of her songs have and has a stupor-like atmosphere, with reverbed vocals and a soft instrumental that takes on a more twisted turn as the song ends. Check this album out if you’re into boundary-pushing pop that leans towards the experimental or aggressive side.
Young Enough by Charly Bliss: Speak of the devil, amiright? I mention Charly Bliss on the second part of my badass female-fronted band list, and they go and drop a new single. This song has all the Charly Bliss essentials, a punk-rock instrumental with a pulse, blunt vocals from Eva Hendricks, and an overall feel of cool.
dead girl in the pool. by girl in red: Have you ever heard a song that’s so wonderfully absurd that it makes you chuckle a little bit? Because that’s what this song is for me. I can’t tell you why, you just have to listen to it yourself, or even better, watch the music video. It’s what would be in the soundtrack if Wes Anderson made a horror movie. This song also showcases girl in red going for a more rock-driven sound, which I’m all for.
dancing around by flor: Fuck yeah, more flor music! I guess it’s time to go on a road trip and blast this song while driving through the countryside. In all seriousness, I appreciate the more laid back nature this song takes, and the guitar solo is great. I just love this band and their whole vibe so much.
Mama by Raveena: I know I can always depend on Raveena for delivering R&B that makes me want to swim in a pool filled with water lilies. Good god this song is beautiful. Raveena’s signature delicate and sweet voice drifts over this guitar-and-drum-studded instrumental, flitting through the notes with such effortlessness it takes my breath away.
Fuckboy by BAUM: NEW BAUM MUSIC! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! This song has an explosive chorus filled with attitude, and BAUM’s voice is just as rich and complex as ever. This song sees her moving on from the vulnerability of her first EP, (which is great, btw,) and kicking some ass. I’m hyped for this new era.
Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole by Your Smith: Well with a title like that I was expecting some kind of rock banger, which would be a surprise from an indie-pop act. This song takes on a different approach from what I initially expected, being an acoustic guitar ballad, but damn did it win me over. Your Smith’s vocals shine on this track, delivering the lyrics and balancing power and vulnerability in just the right way. I can’t recommend this enough, give this a listen.
Other Favorites
Joshua by Dizzy: Fucking obsessed with this song. Turns me into an emotional wreck whenever I hear it. I’ve already gushed about this enough, just trust me and go give it a listen. It’s so fbucking gooood.
Giving Up The Gun by Vampire Weekend: So I’ve been on a Vampire Weekend kick after their recent album release, and why the hell did I wait for so long to check them out? Their music has so much energy, it’s right up my alley. This song in particular makes me feel so invigorated and happy, especially with those little chiming bells in the background music. Total bop/10.

But can I recommend an artist to listen to in case you ever feel sad - her name is raveena aurora and she makes music to help you heal - my personal fav is Honey (but I also like mama and stronger). She is also very proud of her south Asian heritage and incorporates people of all backgrounds in her music videos they’re truly beautiful. And so she is a great role model for me.

Raveena Aurora's R&B, soul-inflected music and soft-spoken spirituality have garnered her a dedicated legion of fans. The Queens-raised, Indian-American singer embarks on her first national tour this fall, one that she calls "the softest tour of all time." In this video, Raveena takes the Cut through a day in her life, and talks us through the inspiration for her album Lucid, her favorite cafe in the city, and what being a musician of color means to her.

June 2, 2021: Lucid by Raveena
*Album on YouTube here
Today’s album is brought to you by noted bicon Raveena Aurora! In this 2018 interview with Vice, she speaks about her experience as a bisexual Indian-American woman, and while the whole interview is good, I wanted to highlight this part (emphasis mine):
“[How have things like biphobia or bi-erasure affected you as someone trying to figure out their own sexuality?] It's hard because I've experienced both straight and queer relationships. But I had trouble in myself completely acknowledging and admitting this other queer side to me. I felt like maybe I wasn't queer or bi enough because I wasn't in a relationship with a woman all the time, you know? Like those feelings weren't real. But they completely are. You have the freedom and right to love or have experiences with whoever you want. Even if you haven't explored [queer relationships] yet, your sexuality is real. It shouldn't be a thing in your life you feel stressed out or strained about because it's literally just expressing love for people.”
By the way, that interview occurred on the heels of the release of the music video for her song “Temptation”. The video is absolutely gorgeous, so give it a watch here!
If you’d like to get involved with stopping the atrocities against Palestine, here’s where you can start (text in bold for readability):
This Carrd is full of information, petitions, and places to donate.
Here are some organizations to which you can donate. This post now includes a list of corporations to boycott.
Here is some information about the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund and a list of other organizations.
This is a list of actions you can take (somewhat UK-specific). This is a reading list of texts with more background information.
UK petitions: This is a petition for the UK government to formally recognize the State of Palestine. This is a petition to introduce sanctions against Israel. This is a petition to condemn Israel for their treatment of Palestine and Palestinians.
Here’s the Wikipedia overview of the current iteration of the crisis.
If you’re curious about the United States’s involvement: this is a report about U.S. foreign aid to Israel. This is the Wikipedia page for Palestine-United States relations and this is the Wikipedia page for Israel-United States relations.
Here are some perspectives from on the ground in Gaza. This is also explains why spreading the Palestinian point of view. is so important.
This is one Jewish person’s explanation of the conflation of Jewish identity with the modern Israeli state. They mention the Nakba, which is important – per Wikipedia, “the Nakba, […] also known as the Palestinian Catastrophe, was the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948, and the permanent displacement of a majority of the Palestinian people.”
This Vox video gives a brief overview of the conflict from its inception until the present day, although it’s from 2016, so it’s not entirely up to date. This CrashCourse video does the same, and I think it’s actually a little better than the Vox video because within the first minute they shut down everyone who claims that this is a religious conflict. That video is also not entirely up to date, as it is from 2015.
Black lives matter and here are some ways you can get involved in the  fight against racism, specifically anti-black racism (text in bold for readability):
This Linktree and this Carrd are full of ways to confront and fight against anti-black racism: places to donate, advice for protesting, educational resources.
This post is specifically about Daunte Wright and how to help his family. This is Daunte Wright’s memorial fund.
The  Minnesota Freedom Fund is doing good work, and since so many people have been recognizing that work and donating to them, they ask that you  instead donate to Families Supporting Families Against Police Violence, the Racial Justice Network, Communities United Against Police Brutality, the Minneapolis NAACP, the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Minneapolis, and the Black Immigrant Collective. You can also donate to the Bail Project, which operates in multiple states.
Other organizations to which you can donate are the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition, the NAACP, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Okra Project, the Solutions Not Punishment Collaborative, For The Gworls, G.L.I.T.S., the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, the Black Trans Travel Fund, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, and the Black Trans Femmes in the Arts Collective.
