Musical Monday: Flying Down to Rio (1933)
Musical Monday: Flying Down to Rio (1933)
It’s no secret that the Hollywood Comet loves musicals. In 2010, I revealed I had seen 400 movie musicals over the course of eight years. Now that number is over 600. To celebrate and share this musical love, here is my weekly feature about musicals.
This week’s musical: Flying Down to Rio (1933) – Musical #94
Studio: RKO Radio Pictures
Director: Thornton Freeland
Starring: Dolores del Rio, Gene…

Film: Flying Down to Rio (1933)
Directed By: Thornton Freeland
Featuring: Dolores del Rio, Gene Raymond, Raul Roulien
I don’t have much to write about this film. It’s a very fun piece, Rogers and Astaire play a couple of the band members. They are not the main characters yet they steal the show. There is something between that the other couples in the film can’t match. I found myself thinking “go back to Rogersand Astaire” every time the camera cut away.
The film was made before the famous code was enforced. See through women's clothing and plunging necklines run rampant. There's raunchy jokes and even some not racist portraits of the non-white characters.
This film is famous for the airplane dance number, watch it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6xzyVY7EfU
