The Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) successfully staged a two part comedy play entitled “Vee Perde” on 30th October 2019.  The play was organised by the Social and Cultural Activities Directorate of (EMU) at the Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Centre.

Accomplished thespians Yasemin Yalçın and İlyas İlbey who are also well known for their roles in television series were accompanied on stage by Kutay Şahin, Ortans Kıvanç, Serdar Bordanacı, Merve Akaydın, Filiz Akın and Oben Onur. The play was performed before a capacity audience comprised of EMU students and members of the general public.

The play adapted from Neil Simon’s “Sunshine Boys” made the audience laugh and think at the same time, telling the story of two former comedians Cahide and Adnan who were forced to come together 22 years later for a television program. The play received a standing ovation and EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu Oğurlu presented Yasemin Yalçın with a plaque and flowers at the end of the play.

Before the play, the cast of “Vee Perde” visited EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam in his office. Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu Oğurlu was also present during the visit. EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam thanked the cast of “Vee Perde” for coming to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and sharing their beautiful play with theatre lovers in the region. The cast of “Vee Perde” thanked EMU for their hospitality indicating that they were very impressed with the university.

On 12th December 2019, the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) organised a comedy play entitled “Suit”.

The drama was staged at the Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Centre, Famagusta.

A large audience, including the students of the university and others, enjoyed the performance of the artists and the theme of the play.

The play basically revolves around a very important question, asking,” What if the right person enters your life just before the wedding”?   The plot revolves around a young couple getting ready for their wedding, close friends following their preparations and events that conspire after some unexpected visitors enter their lives.

A serious question has been dealt with in the play in a comic and funny way.  This question leads our protagonists into a fun and intriguing journey around problems that seem unsolvable. Comedy Theatre’s newest production is brought to life by its tremendous cast who portray a series of funny incidents with an expert set-up.

The cast included famous thespians such as Begüm Öner, Kerem Poyraz Kayaalp, Ceyhun Fersoy, Canan Atalay and Melis İşiten. The play’s director was Eyüp Emre Uçaray and his assistant director was Aziz Caner İnan. The set was designed by Tolga Güleryüz. Murat Yılmaz was in charge of décor, Gülcan of costumes and Eren Yiğit of photographs. The poster was designed by Galip Aksular. The stage direction assistant was Meltem Coşkun.

The Amateur Maritime Training Program, which was initiated with the aim of 1 out of 25 people becoming an amateur sailor in our country, took place at Famagusta Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Centre on 11th July.

248 people participated in the training organised with the technical support of Istanbul Technical University Northern Cyprus in cooperation with TRNC Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

The training given by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Trainer Esat G��zel started at 14.00 with the opening speeches of Kemal Bağzıbağlı, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, and Republic of Turkey Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure General Directorate of Marine and Inland Waters – Ahmet Selçuk Sert

Following the opening speeches, Ali Kurumahmut, Advisor to the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Turkey, made a presentation on maritime law and amateur seafarer training. Then the training program and the examinations commenced.

The event was attended by the Minister of Tourism and Environment Ünal Üstel and former Tourism Minister Fikri Ataoğlu and the Turkish Cypriot Peace Forces Chief of Staff Recep Akpınar.

Amateur Maritime Certificates will be given to those who are successful in the examinations after the training. Amateur Seamen Certificate holders will be entitled to use a boat with a maximum length of 24 meters in the TRNC and Turkey.

Public Works and Transportation Ministry Undersecretary Kemal Bağzıbağlı said, as a maritime island more dissemination and development will continue in these and similar programs.  He added that the program to increase the number of boat mooring places will be adapted in our country and the infrastructure opportunities for our amateur seafarers to moor their boats will be increased.

Bağzıbağlı said “We have taken a step towards increasing the interest of maritime in our country and increasing maritime sports, activities and economic values. By 2023, we have set a target of 15,000 amateur seafarers.  He added that there was a consensus with the officials of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure regarding the Amateur Maritime Training and Examination to be held on the last Saturday of each month. Undersecretary Bağzıbağlı stated that the Ministry of Public Works and Transport will make an announcement about the next training and examination sessions.

Famous Turkish writer and artist Gülse Birsel delivered a talk at the Eastern Mediterranean University on 18th May 2019. The whole of the Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress and Centre, where the talk was given, was filled with students, who applauded her frequently.

Gülse Birsel is a popular name as a result of her famous series televised on various Turkish channels during the last ten years. Her most popular series was “Avrupa Yakası”, a famous serial, which basically dealt with the day to day life in the city of Istanbul, in a humorous cum satirical way. The serial ran for over 5 years on a popular TV channel.

She is a well known column writer and has a number of books to her credit.

The press release issued by the Eastern Mediterranean University, indicated her experiences on the set of her first film “Aile Arasında” as well as popular TV series like Avrupa Yakası and Yalan Dünya Birsel and noted that Jet Sosyete will from now on be 45-50 minutes long and available on digital platforms from October. Also touching upon her plans as an author, Birsel indicated that this year she will only be writing comedy books after revealing that she is currently working on a new book. After humorously speaking about the usage of social media and technology Birsel underlined the importance of being an optimist.

The talk then continued in a question and answer format. Birsel provided the following advice to those in attendance: “If you have a dream start working towards it as soon as possible. Don’t do nothing during summer periods. Gravitate towards whatever you do with ease. Start to be a professional with or without a wage.”

At the end of the talk Gülse Birsel received a plaque of appreciation from EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu Oğurlu.

As part of the ongoing 24th Spring Festival of the Eastern Mediterranean University, the Turkish version of “I am Don Quixote” was staged on 16th and 17th May 2019, at the Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Centre of the Eastern Mediterranean University.

The play was watched and appreciated by a large number of students and other theatre lovers.

As a classic adapted to Turkish, the play was directed by Emrah Eren and has a rich cast including Nazlı Tosunoğlu, Ömür Arpacı, Serhan Ernak, Nur Erkul, Dilşat Bozyiğit, Diren Polatoğulları, Enis Aybar, Tuğba Eskicioğlu, Rifat Durmuş and Kamran Velicanov.
