Starting as Alfyn Greengrass in Octopath travler has been really funny to me. I like him, they all charming. But starting with Alfyn means we have this young newbie apothecary chatacter, who is going travling for experience and to heal the sick and suffering. And so the first thing he does, is wander over to the next town and gets involved in a heist.

Yes I know Therion is a Lone Wolf character. But that also makes it funny. Therion is like, 'Other theives, nah. You know what my heist needs? Drugs. I need an apothecary.'

So he asks. "Hey buddy, want to join me on my heist?"

To which Alfyn, -who doesnt charge what people can't afford, and is on a mission to do good- tells him "sure I'm in. "

And so they set out on a quest to break into the mansion.

Or so happns in my game. As Alfyn is not acknowledged by any of the story characters, it's probably meant to imply that Therion broke in alone, or they might have matching friendship bracelets.

So if this were a novel or written, it would probably go, Therion rants to Alfyn about how absoloutly terrible his last heist went, and Alfyn decides "we should be traveling companions."

His other closest option, is Primrose, who is on a vengeance quest, which probably involves diffrent kinds of crimes.

So we have; Local healer leaves home for the first time, and immediately gets involved in crimes with his new friend.

olympics coming up…… athlete aus on the mind….. satoru as a swimmer….. unreasonably large wingspan…. huge hands..... thinks “official” competitions and tournaments are boring because he can’t use the goofy purple googly eyes goggles he likes to practice in…… practices at ungodly hours solely because he likes when the pool is empty because that means you’ll dip your feet in at the edge and be there to greet him with a kiss when he’s finished his laps….. they bring up the stats board and it’s just his name ten times before the next fastest person and he could still lap them, and even tho he’ll always put so much pressure on himself to be the best, it’s worth it to have you hold his face and tell him you’re proud of him... he’s gotten so much merch from events and sponsorships and he used to think they just created clutter but that all changes when you start to wear his clothes (esp the ones with his name on it… he’s not proud to admit that does Something to him)…. always looks up to the stands when he finishes a race and if he knows you’re not there, he looks right at the camera, draws an infinity sign with his fingers, and blows a kiss (which, some commentators routinely call “unsportsmanlike conduct” but he doesn’t care, and always, publicly says he’ll pay the fees if it means blowing a kiss to his girl at home)

there's nothing quite like a random piece of media you consumed ages ago and loved at the time but kinda forgot about after coming back to you years later absolutely out of nowhere like "you thought you could forget about me? don't worry! i'm here to be the only thing you care about yet again" and then the cycle repeats

it's fun but also painful because the intensity of the obsession revived makes it hard to focus on anything else like someone get these fictional people out of my head please

A thing I think we should consider more about Makoto's character when writing her is that she knows Aikido and is not using it in the Metaverse.

Let me explain.

Martial arts come with a philosophy. They are a synthisis of a founders philosaphical and religious beliefs and their martial studies.

Aikido's founder was Morihei Ueshiba, and his goal was creating a fighting style that lets the user defend themselves, while also protecting the attacker from injury. Aikido can be translated as "the way of harmonious spirit", or "the way of unifying with life energy."

The goal is to avoid cultivating violence or aggressiveness. Its tecquniques include attack redirection, throws, pins, strikes, and joint locks. When using weapons, it uses staffs, knives, and wodden katanas.

Its fitness goals are less about strength training and more about flexibility, endurance, and controled relaxation.

All of the above, establishes that it is Not Aikido, Makoto is using in the Metaverse. She may have learned how to strike in Aikido class, but in the Metaverse she is going for all out attacking.

It could have been possible to tie in take down tactics to her and add ways to force shadow negotiation as her confidant incresed, but it doesn't. Instead its about analyzing the shadows.

She trains in a martial art whose goal is "to overcome ones self instead of culivating violence or agression", and when she comes face to face with an opponent in the metaverse she throws all that philosophy out the window in favor of agressive striking.

Her magic attack, is necular- an energy at which is produced by splitting the nuculus of atoms (particles) apart, or fuse them togther.

Her rebellion does not begin and end with her bike.

he's a leo.

he's incredibly tidy. if his parents leave the house in a mess, he'll complain but proceed to deep-clean it anyways.

he's a stickler for other people's safety. if he notices someone's shoelace is untied, he'll tie it for them, regardless of the circumstances (ie. smack-dab in the middle of a sports game)

on another note, he seems to have a fixation with tying people's shoelaces for them.

he's weak for sweets in general, not just coffee jelly. sweet tooth saiki!

he has a huge soft spot for kids. this probably stems from his failed childhood friendship with akechi.

he's scared of bugs because he can't read their minds. this implies that powerless!saiki might be a lot shyer, more anxious, and even pricklier, since he doesn't know what anybody's thinking.

he's totally a mama's boy. he learned his moral compass from her, does whatever she wants, believes he was born an esper to protect her, etc.

also, the notorious zebra print blazer was because of his mom.

he's so much of a people-pleaser that he'll sacrifice his desire for anonymity and normalcy; he'll insert himself into situations, stalk people, and use his powers even if it means the spotlight will fall on him.

not only is he a people-pleaser, he's a drama queen. he'd rather concoct elaborate plans to avoid somebody instead of simply rejecting them.

he's a one piece fan.

his favorite arcade game used to be whack-a-mole, and he thought destroying all the moles meant he'd won. he was banned because of this.

his glasses are colored glasses from his childhood toy box. wording implies that he's been wearing this same pair his whole life.

he likes baking/cooking, mostly because he gets to eat the sweets that he made. (househusband saiki... heh.)

he smiled a lot more freely as a kid. when he wasn't wearing a dazed expression, he looked like quite the cheerful child.

he helps kaido out with classwork by simply handing him his own work.

he rarely gets sick, and when he does he can cure himself by turning his body into an inferno through pyrokinesis. however, this means he knows next to nothing about medicine.

similarly, he's tragically naïve about the internet.

he's good at singing and likes karaoke (preferably singing by himself).

like kaido, he gets seasick. however, he fervently denies this. he seems to think himself impervious of the maladies regular people suffer from.

he has a bit of a girly run.

he likes using takahashi as a joke. "it's everyone's favorite, takahashi." he also hates takahashi because of his strong resemblance to akechi's childhood bully, takashi.

he likes hot baths.

when he walks home from school, he follows this routine: he stops at the convenience store, picks up coffee jelly, puts it back on the shelf, then continues home. ...incredible. he seems incapable of not staring at any nearby coffee jelly.

he may be willing to downplay his smarts/talents to avoid trouble, but he'll get competitive when he's with akechi or kusuke.

he's hesitant to cause his friends any harm, but will freely maim toritsuka, so long as the damage is immediately reversed.

he won't hesitate with kusuke, though.

lastly, and most importantly:

he's a cutie patootie <3
