A wind turbine foundation is a critical structural component that provides stability and support for a wind turbine. These foundations are designed to securely anchor the turbine to the ground, ensuring it remains stable and capable of efficiently converting wind energy into electricity. Wind turbine foundations come in various types, each suited to specific site conditions and turbine designs
Wind turbine foundations are designed based on site-specific factors such as soil conditions, wind loads, and the size and height of the wind turbine. Engineers conduct geotechnical investigations and computer simulations to optimize foundation design. Foundations that require piles are installed by driving them deep into the ground using specialized equipment. Some foundations, such as gravity-based structures, rely on ballasting with water or other materials to increase their weight and stability. Components are often assembled on-site, especially for offshore installations, and transported to the location for installation.
Wind turbine foundations ensure the stability of wind turbines, allowing them to operate effectively and safely even in strong winds. Foundations are designed to support wind turbines of varying sizes, including multi-megawatt turbines. Professionally designed foundations require minimal maintenance over their operational lifetime. Some foundation types, especially those used offshore, involve complex design, fabrication, and installation processes. Transporting massive foundation components, particularly for offshore projects, be logistically challenging. Routine inspections are conducted to ensure the structural integrity and safety of wind turbine foundations.
Wind turbine foundations are essential components of both onshore and offshore wind farms, supporting the installation of wind turbines for electricity generation. Wind turbine foundations play a crucial role in the successful deployment and operation of wind turbines, contributing to the growth of renewable energy generation worldwide. The choice of foundation type depends on factors such as project location, water depth, and environmental considerations. Wind turbine foundation systems are integral to the growth of the wind energy sector. While challenges like high costs and logistical complexities exist, ongoing technological advancements and increasing global demand for renewable energy present promising opportunities for industry. In addition, regulatory support and environmental considerations play key roles in shaping the future of wind turbine foundation development and deployment.
The wind industry is shifting toward larger turbines, which require innovative foundation solutions capable of supporting increased loads. Environmental impact assessments and sustainability considerations are becoming more critical in foundation design and construction, particularly in sensitive offshore environments. Ambition to action’: The Ellen MacArthur foundation’s 1st Circular design strategy
The Ellen MacArthur foundation has released its first circular design strategy as a systematic approach through which to guide organisations in adopting circular principles. The strategy, aptly named ‘from ambition to action’, explains how to leverage design to facilitate a shift from the conventional linear model of production to a circular one.
Systems: This angle emphasizes the importance of designing products and services that fit within a circular economy system. It involves considering the entire lifecycle of a product, from sourcing materials to end-of-life scenarios.
Futures: This approach focuses on designing products that are adaptable and future-proof. It aims to create products that can be easily repaired, upgraded, or repurposed.
Collaborations: This angle recognizes the need for collaboration across sectors and industries. It involves engaging stakeholders, policymakers, and businesses to drive the transition to a circular economy at scale.
Capabilities: This approach promotes the development of new skills and capabilities within organizations. It aims to empower designers to think about opportunities for long-term value creation and promote sustainable practices within the industry.
Rules: This angle involves creating policies and regulations that support circular design practices. It aims to create an enabling environment for circular innovation and promote sustainable practices within the industry.
Tools: This approach focuses on developing tools and resources that support circular design practices. It aims to provide designers with the necessary resources to implement circular design principles within their organizations.
Along with this framework, the foundation has provided an example of a project that embodies the principles of their circular design strategy, aiming to inspire other organisations to do the same.
As an example of the Collaboration lever in practice they’ve provided the “creating Circular Neighbourhoods initiative”. The project aims to “inspire city actors (communities, governments, and businesses) to initiate circular economy activities at the neighbourhood level, across construction, servitisation, and food systems. The neighbourhood scale can be a powerful testing environment for circular solutions, acting as a living lab representing community behaviours and their interactions with wider systems.”
A Message Echoed within the Industry
This strategy is particularly relevant for the construction industry as the built environment alone is responsible for a staggering 40% of global emissions and consumes approximately 50% of the world’s extracted materials. In light of the ‘climate action gap’ highlighted by the Ramboll sustainable buildings market study, this design strategy seems overwhelmingly relevant.
The study highlighted the disparity between pro sustainability sentiments from the majority of organisations within the industry and the lack of embedded net zero buildings targets.
The name ‘Ambition to action’ even echoes the commentary of Ramboll’s director Scott Brookes who used these exact words to describe the main objective for the construction industry.

The Ramboll Foundation funds an Agricultural Centre in Fundong.
In April 2016, Afri-link received funding for BERUDA from the Ramboll Foundation to construct a new agricultural centre in Fundong. BERUDA already owned a plot of land and the idea was to build a pig farm, biogas unit and fish farm there.
Part of the scope was to provide 100 pigs and pens. By fattening and breeding them, BERUDA will get a sustainable income to support its other work in the region. The pig dung is going to be put into a new biogas unit, from which the gas will be piped to local homes for cooking purposes; this will mean that families will not have to cook on open smoky fires. As a result, we hope that many of the eye and chest ailments suffered, especially by local ladies, will disappear.
The solid waste output from the biogas unit can be used as fertiliser and also as feed for plants in a new fish pond, that will provide further income from the sale of Tilapia fish. As we have a good area for other activities, we are planting a garden and keeping other livestock such as goats and turkeys.
This is a great project and we thank the Ramboll Foundation for their help.

Fuggerei Next500 Pavilion, Germany
The Fuggerei in Augsburg is the world’s oldest social housing complex. In celebration of their 500th anniversary, the Fugger Foundations initiated an interdisciplinary debate on the topic of housing, culminating in the presentation of a “Fuggerei Code” for the future of social housing, alongside a series of studies for future Fuggereien around the world. The Next500 Pavilion, outside the town hall in the Fuggerei’s home city of Augsburg, is the epicentre of this debate and programme.
The pavilion is a long, narrow, gabled building, its form inspired by the long terraced houses of the Fuggerei itself. However, rather than a single straight block, one end of the pavilion is curved and raised up to suggest its role in looking out to the future Fuggereien, both in Augsburg and around the world. This lifted end forms an 8.5-metre cantilever that provides a lookout point to view the town hall itself. Thanks to the curved shape, a part of the town hall square is enclosed between the pavilion and the adjacent Augustus Fountain, creating an intimate plaza suitable for a variety of events.
Inside, the pavilion is split into various rooms for the exhibition and events. These rooms also refer to the building blocks identified in the Fuggerei of the Future study. This includes a meeting point where visitors come together to design the Fuggerei of the Future, a pink bar to cater for the festivities, and a tribune housed in the raised end which can host lectures, presentations, and other events.
The structure is made entirely from cross-laminated timber, pushing the boundaries of modern CLT technology with its eight-metre cantilever and double-curved elements. Sustainability played a critical role in the selection of this structural approach. The wood is sourced from the Fuggerei’s own forests, and a local carpenter created the wooden interiors. Wood stores carbon instead of releasing it into the atmosphere, while CLT allowed the pavilion to use a modular system.
This facilitates a quick and seamless construction, and makes the pavilion demountable so that it can later be deconstructed and relocated either inside the Fuggerei itself, or perhaps as a destination point in the forests of the Fuggerei. In this way, the pavilion is assured a second life after the conclusion of the exhibition.
