What is Rosh Hashanah and how is it celebrated?
Rosh Hashanah, meaning "head of the year" in Hebrew, is the celebration of the Jewish New Year. It’s commemorated with prayers, food and gatherings.
By Danielle Abreu • Published 6 hours ago •Updated 5 hours ago
Rosh Hashanah is a two-day holiday celebrating the Jewish New Year and kicks off the start of the Jewish High Holiday season. Here’s everything you need to know about this important holiday celebrated by people around the world.
The two-day holiday known as Rosh Hashanah kicks off the beginning of the Jewish "High Holidays," a ten-day period of repentance and reflection that culminates with Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.
But what exactly is Rosh Hashanah and how is it celebrated? Here's everything you need to know:
What is Rosh Hashanah?
Rosh Hashanah, meaning "head of the year" in Hebrew, is the celebration of the Jewish New Year. During Rosh Hashanah, Jewish people around the world ask God for forgiveness for mistakes they’ve made over the past year and remind themselves not to repeat those mistakes in the coming year.

What is Yom Kippur?
Yom Kippur comes on the last of the 10 days of repentance that began with Rosh Hashanah. The day is usually observed with fasting and extended time in deep prayer, before ending with the sounding of a "shofar," a trumpet made from a ram's horn.
When is Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur 2023?
Rosh Hashanah is observed on the first day of the month of Tishrei on the Hebrew calendar, which falls in September or October on the Gregorian calendar, the calendar commonly used throughout the world.
This year in 2023, Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset on Friday, Sept. 15, and ends at sunset on Sunday, Sept. 17. Yom Kippur will begin next week on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 24, and ends the evening of Monday, Sept. 25.
How is Rosh Hashanah celebrated?
Rosh Hashanah observances include special foods, traditions and mitzvahs, or commandments, and celebrations can vary from family to family. Many people attend services at a temple or synagogue, where a special service is held with messages of hope and atonement in the new year.
A hollowed-out ram’s horn, called a shofar, is blown during services to awake any spiritual slumber and remind worshipers to return to God and reflect on their sins.
Another important part of Rosh Hashanah is Tzedakah, or giving back to those in need. The belief is that by carrying out good deeds, God will notice these efforts and bless them with a fruitful new year.
Some Jewish families toss bread crumbs into bodies of water to symbolize the discarding of their sins, a tradition that dates back centuries.

What Do People Eat During Rosh Hashanah?
Fish is a traditional meal at Rosh Hashanah as it symbolizes fertility and abundance. Some people will eat the head of the fish to express the desire to be leaders and not followers in the year.
Many Jewish families also eat challah bread and apples dipped in honey, symbolizing the sweet hopes for the New Year.
Some families will also eat pomegranate fruit as its many seeds represent the many blessings in the coming year.
What Are Rosh Hashanah Greetings?
Because Rosh Hashanah celebrates the Jewish New Year, the most common greeting is "Happy New Year." The equivalent in Hebrew is "Shanah tovah," (pronounced shah-NAH toe-VAH) which literally means "good year."
Shanah tovah is the condensed version of a longer greeting L’shana tovah u’metukah, which means “for a good and sweet year.”
You can also say "chag sameach" (pronounced KHAHG sah-MEY-akh) which means "happy festival," the Hebrew equivalent of Happy Holidays."

Tank update. Cycle crashed recently and has restablized. Devil Spike is pissier than usual, but since the rams and nerites are chill I'll let that sort itself out.
Still unnamed betta girl Heket is doing great. Huge appetite, eats only the tiny snails, zero interest in the corydoras. She DOES eat all the cory food which has become a nuisance I have yet to sort.
Scarlet Temple continues to do nothing but grow algae. I'm surprised the two lotuses haven't exploded yet (words that will haunt me in the future), but the sagittaria is quickly overtaking the bare sections of sand.

Cut Scenes #2: The Destruction of the Sammer Kingdom
I couldn't justify including this section in the latest update to Expiate, as it would have slowed down the narrative unnecessarily. So enjoy, if one can use such a word for this scene, my take on traumatizing Mario and co. with the end of the world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What number was that?”
“Twenty-seven, I think!”
Mario lets loose a vicious oath.
There’s not enough time.
They reach the next set of doors, panting. On the unspoken count of three they push, Mario using his own beleaguered body as a battering ram, slamming his throbbing shoulder into hard-grained wood.
“Twenty…eight…” Bowser heaves, folding over, clasping his knees with shaking hands.
Mario grunts, racing around to Bowser’s rear, pushing at his shell with what little strength he has remaining. “Get moving, Koopa,” he grits, sweat stinging at the corners of his eyes. “We can’t rest, not now.”
The Void belches with a gargantuan roar, spewing an ashen plume of iridescent nothingness which cascades through the sky, specks of obliteration flittering to the ground.
“I know, I know,” Bowser wheezes, one large hand grabbing onto Mario’s bad shoulder for support.
Above them, the Void grumbles.
Mario nods, and a moment later, they’re off again, dashing up and over the podium where another one of Sammer’s men remains steadfast, kneeling in doomed obeisance. Mario wonders what happened to the real Sammer leader, if he’s already dead. It would be kinder, he thinks, than this.
They sprint upwards, twenty-nine, thirty, thirty-one, thirty-two, the world losing hue with each ascension, shadows with no object slithering from the sky. They crash through to the thirty-third level, scraped and bleeding, Peach’s skirt tearing on broken wood, angry splinters gouging into raw fingers and swollen palms as they push another set of doors open.
“Thirty-four,” Peach announces as the ground rumbles, then lets out a calamitous roar, the world phasing in multicolored duality. Bowser is thrown forward, stumbling towards the raised stage before them, perspiration dripping in wild zigzag patterns from his shell. Mario grabs for the nearest stanchion, the vertigo of a near-undone reality knocking him to his knees. He barks out a ragged cough, dirty phlegm rocketing from his lungs.
The taste is necrotic.
One of Sammer’s men stands on the far end of the platform, crimson hat melting around his head, a bright-red trail of sanguine decay creeping from his temple to inner ear. He brandishes a tarnished, silver pike in his right hand, swinging the weapon to a horizontal bar across his body.
“We are doomed!” he proclaims, eyes frenzied and bloodshot, jaw unhinged in an open smile that nearly bisects his face. He yells to the open, bleeding sky, shaking his pike to the falling heavens. “It cannot be stopped!”
“IT CANNOT BE STOPPED!” the guard barks with hysterical laughter, throwing his head back, blood splattering across the broken stage.
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”
They need to leave, need to run, they -
Mario freezes. Something’s wrong with his shadow.
He looks up. The sun is fading into the outline of a bright halo, what’s left of the sky now fallen into a deep indigo. The tectonic convulsions of the earth peter out, undulating land gently seesawing back to a nervous equilibrium.
Mario grabs Peach’s hand.
Something very, very bad is about to happen.
All at once, static pushes up through the earth in high-pitched, curling squeals. Mario stares, slack-jawed, as the sonic leviathan rises from the ends of the universe, mountains fracturing into shards of bone, forest pummeled into flat, dripping entrails. He thinks he hears Bowser calling for his children, thinks he hears himself shouting for his lost brother, but the Void’s hunger is as loud as it is insatiable, slurping at rivers, needlepoint teeth tearing into the belly of the sky with a satisfied growl that shakes the world. There’s nothing left, nothing but Peach’s hand in his and all Mario can think is please forgive me as the last of existence unspools with a serrated shriek and -
The only approach to the Mut Precinct is along the avenue of rams built by Nectanebo II (362-343 BC), the last native Egyptian pharaoh. The sandstone paving is original, even if somewhat worn and broken. Pretty amazing when you consider that it is about 2,400 years old.
As he promised, Abdel Aziz has been sending us regular updates on the column restoration project. By February 21, the work on the east column was in its final stages. As you can see here, the semi-final coating, toned to match the sandstone, has been applied. The herringbone pattern of grooves is to allow the final coat to adhere. A worker, wearing the protective gear, is using a grinder to smooth the surface of the lower column drums cut by Sayyid. The lowest column drums of most columns curved out from the column base, mimicking plants. The worker is grinding the new stone to match the ancient shape.
By February 27, the east column was finished. This is the better-preserved east side of the column.
The other side of the column was in worse condition and essentially had to be rebuilt. The missing parts have been filled in so that it is now complete and stable. Originally there were thin walls between the columns (called “intercolumnar walls”), their junction with the columns marked by a projection on the lowest column drums. The restorers have mimicked this feature on the restored column. Talk about attention to detail.
In our last post on-site, the base of the west column had just been cleared of the deteriorated sandstone. By February 21, a new base had been constructed and one of the restorers was creating a new support for the column drums using baked brick and a cement mixture. We used a similar method to create new bases for the smaller columns in Temple A that we restored in 2019.
It takes time for the cement to cure properly, but by February 27 the two ancient column drums had been mounted on the new column base and the scaffold had been set up, ready to lift the remaining drums into place. Stay tuned for the final installment.
One big attraction for tourists is a dawn balloon ride over the monuments on the west bank: Deir el Bahari, the Valley of the Kings, the Ramesseum and Medinet Habu. We saw as many as 21 balloons at a time this year.
[ad_1] GG News Bureau New Delhi, 23rd Dec. Uttar Pradesh has set an unprecedented milestone in tourism, attracting 476.1 million visitors between January and September 2024. Among the top destinations, Ayodhya, the spiritual capital of the state, has overtaken Agra’s iconic Taj Mahal to emerge as the most visited spot, as per a recent report by Moneycontrol. The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department revealed that Ayodhya welcomed 135.5 million domestic tourists and 3,153 international visitors during this period, with the inauguration of the Ram Temple being the primary catalyst for this surge. In comparison, Agra, home to the Taj Mahal, saw 125.1 million visitors, including 115.9 million domestic travelers and 924,000 international tourists. Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh lauded the state’s remarkable progress, stating, “Uttar Pradesh welcomed 480 million tourists last year, a milestone nearly reached in just nine months this year.” Religious Tourism Drives Growth Industry experts point to the rise of spiritual tourism as the driving force behind these record-breaking numbers. “Ayodhya has become the epicenter of spiritual tourism in India,” said Mohan Sharma, a senior travel planner based in Lucknow, noting a 70% increase in religious tour bookings. Other spiritual hubs in the state have also seen significant growth. Varanasi recorded 62 million domestic tourists and 184,000 international visitors. Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, hosted 68 million visitors, including 87,229 foreigners. Prayagraj, famed for the Kumbh Mela, drew 48 million tourists. Mirzapur, known for its Vindhyavasini temple, welcomed 11.8 million visitors. Despite Ayodhya’s dominance in domestic tourism, the Taj Mahal remains a global favorite among international tourists. Agra’s foreign arrivals rose from 2.684 million in 2022-23 to 27.7 million in 2023-24, even as domestic numbers slightly declined. “Foreign tourists view the Taj Mahal as an unmissable icon. However, domestic travelers are increasingly drawn to spiritual experiences in Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj,” noted Arvind Mehta, an Agra-based tour operator. Buddhist Circuit and Infrastructure Development The state’s Buddhist circuit, centered around Kushinagar, reported 1.62 million visitors, including 153,000 international tourists. Enhanced infrastructure has been key to Uttar Pradesh’s tourism success. Rohit Malhotra, a hospitality expert, praised the government’s efforts: “From premium accommodations to guided tours and seamless transport, the state now offers a holistic travel experience.” Signature Events and Future Growth The Pran Pratishtha ceremony at the Ram Temple drew record crowds, with further surges expected as its anniversary in January approaches. RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Criticizes Rising Temple-Mosque Disputes
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has voiced concerns over the rising disputes involving temples and mosques, cautioning against individuals using such issues to gain prominence. Addressing a lecture titled ‘India – The Vishwaguru’ in Pune, Mr. Bhagwat emphasized the importance of harmony and inclusivity in Indian society.
Advocating Harmony
Speaking at the Sahjeevan Vyakhyanmala lecture series, Mr. Bhagwat highlighted India's tradition of unity despite diversity. He pointed to examples like Christmas being celebrated at the Ramakrishna Mission, saying, “Only we can do this because we are Hindus.”
He underlined the significance of showcasing this harmony to the world. "We have lived in peace for centuries. If we want to offer this harmony to the world, we need to set an example here," he said.
Concerns About New Disputes
Mr. Bhagwat expressed dissatisfaction with individuals stirring up new temple-mosque disputes following the construction of the Ayodhya Ram temple, which he described as a matter of faith for all Hindus. “Some people think they can become leaders of Hindus by raking up similar issues in new places. This is not acceptable,” he asserted.
The RSS chief questioned why fresh disputes were being raised frequently. “Every day, a new matter is being raked up. How can this be allowed? India needs to show that we can live together,” he said, without mentioning specific sites or cases.
Historical Context
Delving into history, Mr. Bhagwat reflected on the rule of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, describing it as marked by staunchness. However, he noted that Aurangzeb’s descendant, Bahadur Shah Zafar, banned cow slaughter during the 1857 revolt.
He also blamed the British for sowing divisions between communities during the colonial era, which he said eventually led to the partition of India.
Equality for All
Calling for unity, Mr. Bhagwat questioned the relevance of terms like “majority” and “minority” in modern India. “Everyone is equal here. The tradition of this nation allows all to follow their own forms of worship. The only requirement is to live in harmony and abide by rules and laws,” he said.
He reminded his audience that India is governed by the Constitution, where representatives are chosen by the people. "The days of dominance are over," he said, urging all to avoid the “language of dominance” and focus on coexistence.
Through his remarks, the RSS chief reinforced the need for India to act as a model of unity and inclusivity in a diverse world. For more updates on political news India in Hindi, subscribe to our newsletter!
N Chandrababu Naidu Vision Vontimitta Ram Temple Development Marks A Milestone In Kadapa District
In a significant stride towards cultural and infrastructural development, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu, and his Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government played a pivotal role in the establishment and enhancement of the Vontimitta Ram Temple in Kadapa District. With an investment of Rs. 130 crores, this ambitious project not only contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage but also serves as a testament to Nara Chandrababu Naidu's commitment to holistic TDP development. The Vontimitta Ram Temple, situated in the heart of Kadapa District, holds immense historical and cultural significance. Dedicated to Lord Rama, this sacred site attracts devotees from across the region. The temple, known for its architectural brilliance, was in need of renovation and modernization to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims and to preserve its rich heritage. Recognizing the importance of preserving cultural landmarks, N Chandrababu Naidu spearheaded the TDP policies and initiative to revitalize the Vontimitta Ram Temple. Under his leadership, the TDP government allocated a substantial budget of Rs. 130 crores for the comprehensive development of the temple complex. This funding facilitated a multi-faceted approach to revitalize the site, encompassing structural improvements, aesthetic enhancements, and the incorporation of modern amenities.
A significant portion of the allocated funds was directed towards the structural revitalization of the Vontimitta Ram Temple. Dilapidated structures were meticulously restored, ensuring the preservation of the temple's architectural grandeur. The TDP agenda for the renovation efforts aimed to strengthen the foundation and enhance the overall structural integrity, ensuring the temple stands tall for generations to come. In addition to structural improvements, the N Chandrababu Naidu government included aesthetic enhancements to elevate the visual appeal of the Vontimitta Ram Temple. Skilled artisans and craftsmen were engaged to restore intricate carvings, sculptures, and artwork that adorn the temple's walls.
