Las 48 Horas: La reinterpretación de la Etapa Maratón que debuta en el Dakar 2024

Si bien en general, las reglas generales del rally raid no son complejas y se han mantenido bastante estables en el tiempo, ASO ha buscado incorporar innovaciones en los últimos años para aumentar el componente competitivo y reducir la especulación en los pilotos de punta. Una solución que funcionó adecuadamente fue la incorporación de las bonificaciones para los pilotos que abren ruta, medida que fue ampliamente celebrada y que fue parte de por qué llegamos con tres pilotos con posibilidades de victoria al día final del Dakar 2023 con tres estrategias de carrera muy diferentes.

El elemento que se modificará en esta edición 2024 será la Etapa Maratón, que se sentía como algo que no terminaba de cuajar y que muchas veces terminaba siendo afectada por factores de clima o competencia que llevaban a que no se realizaba tal como estaba programada. Aunque el nuevo formato, conocido como la etapa de 48 horas, no asegura que puedan no haber disrupciones, permitirá un acercamiento mayor a lo que vivieron los aventureros originales muchas veces en África.

La etapa de 48 horas contará con 8 campamentos en 600 kilómetros y una hora tope de las 16 horas del primer día para detenerse en el siguiente campamento que se encuentre. Así, los competidores quedarán repartidos en diferentes lugares en la noche donde no contarán con asistencia y tampoco con acceso a los tiempos de sus rivales, luego tendrán que guiarse por su intuición para definir el ritmo desde las 7 AM del día siguiente en la arrancada.

Si bien es probable que por la configuración, muchos de los pilotos de punta queden en el mismo campamento si pudiera haber una repartición de acuerdo al horario de largada, y eso pudiera abrir los resultados de esta mega etapa que se realiza en dos días. Al mismo tiempo, esto abrirá las opciones de que sea más difícil para los pilotos de recibir asistencia efectiva en el Maratón ya que los camiones de asistencia definitivamente estarán muy lejos y puede que algunos compañeros de equipo no queden en el mismo campamento. Además se programaron rutas distintas para motos y autos.

Y por el lado de la experiencia, estos ocho bivouac tendrán todavía menos comodidades que un campamento de Maratón por lo que será clave dosificar bien la energía y lograr un buen descanso en la noche en un lugar totalmente aislado en el Empty Quarter.

Rebels of the Outlaw Wastes got me thinking about that very specific late 90s zeitgeist that spawned a whole bunch of different games about car-based violence, like Carmageddon, Twisted Metal, Interstate '76, and so on. Many of them featured post-apocalyptic and/or alternate history settings and whether you liked nu-metal or funk or new wave or whatever these games had you covered

Anyway I know there's Car Wars by Steve Jackson Games which started out as more or less a board game but added RPG elements with later supplements and then there was Autoduel Champions which adapted Car Wars into Champions. But I think there could be something in a mechanically deep vehicular combat roleplaying game.

I think Rebels of the Outlaw Wastes will definitely scratch some of that itch, but I should first read it.
