Suddenly we're three Letters from Watson into The Valley of Fear. I'm fairly sure I didn't read it during my late-childhood discovery of Sherlock Holmes, so my tabula is more than usually rasa.
In chapter 1, Watson refers to the date as being in the late 1880s. Since the serial started publication in September 1914, and was presumably written not too long before that, this would be like you or I writing a novel set circa 1999. Some of the readers who eagerly awaited their updates, back in the early weeks of World War I, would not have had adult memories of 1889-ish.
The events of chapter 1 appear to hang on Whitaker's Alamanack, which it turns out was in continuous publication until... wait for it... 2021. Here's the site with some information on the final edition. Whitaker's was a compendium of useful facts, updated annually. For Americans like me, the near equivalent would be the World Almanac, which may still be published. Both Whitaker's and the World Almanac started up in 1868, so apparently that year was a cultural moment of feeling that a person needed some handy way to understand an increasingly connected world.
The idea that "everyone" owns the same book, in the same edition, feels absolutely wild now, in 2024. This was true in my childhood for the World Almanac, though, and probably for a couple other books.
For Holmes' era, "Bradshaw" was, of course, the big railway guide. What ended its importance was not the internet, but railroad consolidation, with its influence waning as early as the mid-1920s.
As we get into chapter two, I am quite liking Inspector MacDonald, who is in on the stereotype of the practical, energetic Scotsman.
Jean-Baptiste Greuze was a real French painter in the 18th century, working in a soft, but very nearly photorealistic style (catalog). Per Wikipedia, La jeune fille a l'agneau also exists and sold in 1865 for more than a million pounds. I'm not surprised that Holmes is most interested in one of the "genre" paintings (scenes of everyday life) rather than the portraits of the famous, but it seems like an odd like insight that Professor Moriarty is, too.
I'm having a heck of a time identifying an online pic that is actually, definitely La jeune fille a l'agneau, rather than one of the many copies, reproductions, and pastiches. This raises a question that Holmes and MacDonald do not: could Moriarty's painting be a copy or reproduction? Greuze had multiple legit pupils who at some point copied his style: not only was copying a master's works a standard part of art education, but it would have been a normal practice for pupils to have painted portions of Greuze's works. Heck, if Moriarty is a master criminal, surely he knows a good art forger or two. I do not entirely buy that Holmes could distinguish a forged version from the original -- that's such a specific skillset. I do think Holmes would prefer his art to be originals, and he believes the same of Moriarty.
Master criminal Jonathan Wild is also a real person who was the real head of a crime ring, back in the last days of the reign of Queen Anne. Wild was also a professional thief-taker, recruited by London's Under Marshall (essentially chief policeman), Charles Hitchens. Hitchens was wildly corrupt, and his pals were known as the "Mathematicians"... at which point, honestly, is Moriarty a projection of Holmes' psyche? (I know that's the premise of The Seven Percent Solution, a movie I adore for its train chase. I just... never quite appreciated the fit before.)
Birlstone is the beneficiary (or victim, depending) of the phenomenon that reliable and extensive railroad travel made it possible to live in a quaint rural exurb while still conveniently doing business in London as needed. I feel like Birlstone wants very badly to be East Grinstead, which is about 15 miles from Tunbridge Wells, at the edge of the forest, and possessed of convenient manor houses.
As an aside, East Grinstead is known for the East Grinstead Martyrs, who were burned at stake for heresy in 1556, when (Catholic) Queen Mary I was slaughtering Protestants. I've been dabbling at 16th- and 17th century history a bit lately, mostly to appreciate how much Reign (which I adore for its batshit OTT drama) deliberately got wrong about actual history. I was surprised that although it was Henry VIII who split with Catholicism, it was not until Elizabeth I that English Protestantism was codified with distinct rituals and the Book of Common Prayer. Just not a thing I'd thought about!
We have a manor house with working drawbridge! Also, a suspicious couple, an even more suspicious brand on the mysterious (and dead) American husband, a suspicious friend, a butler, a note in code, and a missing wedding ring.
I started this one not sure how into it I'd be, since I'm not a great fan of the entire idea of Moriarty, but now I'm on tenterhooks to see what we find out about the dead American's past.

5. Early 20th century colonization in Africa and continued mineral exploitation
African colonialism experienced a persistence and intensity in the early 20th century, especially with regard to European countries' exploitation of mineral resources. European corporations, such as "Union Minière du Haut Katanga" in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and "De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd." in South Africa, were awarded profitable mining concessions by colonial authorities (Newbury, 1981, Radmann, 1978). European businesses benefited greatly economically from these concessions, which granted them exclusive rights to prospect, mine, and export minerals. They also gained control over the wealth generated by minerals.
African miners were subject to a highly institutionalized system of exploitation by Europeans, who determined not only the price of imported commodities but also the raw material prices. For instance, "“import trade, like her export trade, was monopolized by the expatriate firms" (America, 2024). Colonial powers invested in roads, ports, railroads, and telecommunications networks as a means of facilitating the mining and export of minerals. The movement of minerals from mining areas to coastal ports for export to Europe and other markets was made easier by initiatives like the Cape to Cairo Railway and ports in South Africa and Tanzania (Williams, 1921, Oritsejafor & Cooper, 2021).
However, forced labour and other unfair practices were closely linked to the mining industry in colonial Africa. African labourers had to put up with unfavourable working conditions, inadequate pay, and forced recruiting practices. European colonial businesses frequently used local middlemen—sometimes via pressure or deception—to recruit labourers. In addition, Africans were subjected to arbitrary detention, brutality, and coercion as a result of raiding, people trafficking, and forced labour laws enforced by colonial authorities. Taxation and indentured servitude policies served as further barriers to exploitative labour arrangements for African populations. These actions served as a stark reminder of the harsh realities of colonialism, which placed African lives and livelihoods at risk in the quest of mineral wealth. In this setting, systematic mineral resource exploitation, ongoing economic reliance, and ongoing social and economic inequality were characteristics of African colonization in the early 20th century.

Alongside its regular army units, mobilized units, and prisoners’ units waging war in Ukraine, Russia has dozens of pseudo-mercenary groups that receive financing from large companies and state agencies. The Uran battalion, for example, is funded by Russian state space corporation Roscosmos; the Soyuz unit, which consists of martial artists, is supported by state-owned companies Sberbank and Rosatom; and before his death, Wagner Group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin spoke of private military companies linked to energy giant Gazprom. According to journalists at independent outlet iStories, the oligarch brothers Boris and Arkady Rotenberg decided to get in on the trend by taking control of the Española battalion, a paramilitary group of far-right football fans. Meduza retells their reporting in English.
Viktor Shendrik, the head of the security department at Russia’s state railroad monopoly Russian Railways, is the sponsor of the Española battalion, a paramilitary group consisting of Russian football fans that’s active in Ukraine, the independent outlet iStories has reported, citing three sources who know Shendrik.
Shendrik is a protege of the billionaire brothers Arkady and Boris Rotenberg, two of Vladimir Putin’s oldest friends and closest allies. A past iStories investigation revealed how the Rotenbergs installed Shendrik in his position at the railroad firm after years of doing business with him. (The brothers own multiple companies that contract for the railroad company.)
“Española was created by fans, mostly of Spartak [soccer club]. Then the Rotenbergs came in with the idea of taking a PMC [private military company] under their own control,” one source told iStories. “A lot of major companies are creating their own private armies right now, and the brothers wanted to create their own private army on the basis of Española.” The source said the Rotenbergs chose Shendrik to head the new entity because of his experience in the security sector.
Viktor Shendrik graduated from the Russian FSB’s border service academy in the town of Golitsyno before serving in the agency’s secretive Vympel unit. In addition to his position at Russian Railways, Shendrik is on the board of directors of Transtelecom, Russia’s second-largest telecommunications company. According to leaked documents, he earned over two billion rubles (over $21 million) in 2021.
Española was founded as a volunteer battalion of soccer fans with far-right views from all over Russia and originally belonged to a battalion from the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic.” In February 2024, Española declared itself a private military company. It boasts a reconnaissance unit, an assault unit, an artillery unit, an electronic warfare unit, a drone unit, and a sniper unit. Its supplies are managed by Ilya Khanin, a soccer fan and the brother of Nikolai Khanin, the head of Moscow’s Ramenskoye district.
Like most of Russia’s volunteer formations, Española is formally a part of Redut, a pseudo-PMC that serves as a mercenary recruitment proxy for the Russian Defense Ministry; this means that Española’s fighters sign their contracts with Redut. Española’s commander is a CSKA Moscow fan named Stanislav Orlov who goes by the call sign Spaniard and who started fighting in Ukraine in 2014. Española fighters took part in the siege of Mariupol’s Azovstal Iron and Steel Works and have fought in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions as well as in the battles for Vuhledar and Avdiivka in the Donetsk region.
