Paralympic Games: Indian shooters, archers arrive in Tokyo

Sports News India's largest batch of para-athletes consisting of shooters, archers, and swimmers arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday morning for the Paralympic Games.

The Paralympic Games are scheduled to be held between August 24 and September 5. The shooting contingent has 17 members including 10 shooters. It is the biggest shooting contingent that the country has ever sent to the Para Games.

Para Shooting World Championships: Second gold for India; Singhraj Adhana secures 2024 Paris Paralympics quota | More sports News

AL AIN (UAE): Double Paralympic medallist Singhraj Adhana secured a quota for India at the 2024 Paris Paralympics after signing off at the fourth place in the P1 - men's 10m Air Pistol SH1 event at the Para Shooting World Championships on Wednesday. The 40-year-old Indian, who won a silver and a bronze at Tokyo Paralympics last year, was in title contention as he led for a major part of the event until a score of seven spoiled his medal chances. While he finished fourth, Korea's Jo Jengdu clinched the gold with a score of 235.7 followed by Poland's Sowinski Szymon (233.1) and Ibragimov Server (213.3). Singhraj was part of the Indian shooting team -- also comprising Manish Narwal and Nihal Singh -- which claimed its second gold medal in the ongoing Championships in the team event of the P1- Men's 10m Air Pistol SH1. The Indian team aggregated a total score of 1704-34x, riding on Paralympic champion Narwal's 575-17x score that put him in second place in the rankings for the finals. The Indian team was followed by Korea (1697-39x) and Turkey (1674-32x). India coach JP Nautiyal said: "The team has done very well, scoring 1704 in Air Pistol is great. I am very happy that we started with a quota from Singhraj at the Worlds." Earlier, Indian pistol shooters, led by Rahul Jakhar, won the team gold in P3- Mixed 25m Pistol SH1. Charanjit Channi's appointment as Punjab CM a 'watershed moment', says Sunil Jakhar

Calling Charanjit Singh Channi's taking office as Punjab Chief Minister a watershed moment, former state Congress president Sunil Jakhar on Friday said the 'warp and weft' of the social fabric of the state must be respected, maintained and nurtured as 'Raj Dharma'.

Taking to Twitter, Jakhar also took a swipe at Opposition parties in Punjab for raising the question of the choice of the new Chief Minister, and said, "All the political opponents of the Congress Party are literally missing the forest while counting trees in attributing political motives to the Congress party's choice of chief minister of Punjab."

"What Rahul Gandhi has done by choosing Charanjeet Channi as CM is that he has broken the barely perceptible 'glass ceiling'," he said.

Calling Channi's appointment as Punjab Chief Minister a bold decision, the Congree leader said the move was "very much rooted in the ethos of Sikhism, is nevertheless a watershed moment not only for the polity but also for the social fabric of the state".

"The warp and weft of this fabric is a complex interplay of aspirations and anxieties of all sections of society. This must be respected, maintained and nurtured as 'Raj Dharma' at all times," he said.

Jakhar's statement came a day after he met Congress' Punjab in-charge and General Secretary Harish Rawat on Wednesday.

In what seemed like a veiled dig at former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Jakha said that if handled in an "inept or biased" manner the prevailing robust brotherhood and amity of Punjab can shatter like a "glasshouse"

"But there is clear and present danger of Punjabiat being put to test once again with usual divisive forces already weaponising this transformative initiative to fragment the society. This threat just can not be wished away. Also, coupled with this, if handled in inept and/or biased manner the prevailing robust brotherhood and amity, which has always been the pride of Punjab even in very testing times, can be as just fragile and shatter just as easily as a 'glasshouse'," he said.

"The new congress dispensation is being keenly watched whether they have what it takes," the former PPCC chief added.

Capt Amarinder Singh after resigning from the post of Punjab Chief Minister on Saturday, made it clear that he will oppose any move to make state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu chief ministerial face of Congress government in the state and said he will be a "disaster for Punjab".

Hitting out at Sidhu, Amarinder Singh said Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and its Army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa were his friends.

On Monday, Jakhar expressed his disagreement over remarks of senior party leader Harish Rawat on the day of swearing-in about facing the upcoming Assembly election under the leadership of Navjot Singh Sidhu instead of the first Dalit Chief Minister Channi.

After Channi was nominated as Amarinder Singh's successor as Punjab Chief Minister, Jakhar, who made way for Navjot Singh Sidhu as PCC chief in July, took to Twitter and said he was baffled to hear Harish Rawat's remarks about facing the upcoming Assembly election under the leadership of Navjot Singh Sidhu instead of the first Dalit Chief Minister Channi.

Amarinder Singh on Saturday submitted his resignation to state Governor Banwarilal Purohit, following months of infighting between him and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

These developments came months before the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.
