Like a Heart Needs a Beat, chapter 1.

Hello, everyone. This is part one of two of an Abby x Lacie story. The first chapter is pretty much just going to be pure fluff, and next chapter the ink-related angst will kick in.

This story, and the next two two-part shipping stories I write, will be “canon” to my version of events.

It wouldn’t have been the first time that Bertrum had dragged Lacie to one of the parties he hosted, but that didn’t mean that she had to like it. She got it, she really did- Bertrum thought she deserved to experience the finer things in life (some of which, to be fair, Lacie did enjoy), and didn’t get that no amount of exposure would make her enjoy this. Still, as she was now, forced into a suit once owned by Bertrum’s son and listening to Bertrum trade compliments that were really insults (or whatever they were. They had a strange way of communicating with each other that Lacie didn’t think she wanted to understand) with his client while dozens of men were flirting with each others’ trophy wives in the background, she felt out of place and a little irritated at Bertrum for insisting she come. It was as Joey and Bertrum were getting especially petty that Lacie just had to look away, and across the room, Lacie saw a woman who looked twice as miserable as she was and only slightly more in-her-element.

Lacie approached her. It was a pretty girl, despite looking like she was completely done with this party. She was wearing a grey suit, clearly tailored for her, and had short, curly hair, dark eyes, clear, dark skin. Her body was pretty nice, too. Yeah, Lacie was going to do this.

“Hey,” Lacie said, “You look like you could use some air. Want me to show you a place where we can get away from the party for a while?”

The woman slowly turned her head to look at her. “Sure. Why not?” she replied without changing expression. Lacie would have to hope that would change and that the woman wasn’t just a natural sourpuss.

Lacie smiled. “Come with me.”

Bertrum was a nice man. He allowed Lacie to step out of parties when she needed to, and even gave her one heck of a place to go when she did: Bertrum’s bird room.

Bertrum loved birds. Bertrum raised birds. It was his favourite hobby. The bird room contained two cages of small, pet-store birds, a larger cage for his doves, and a number of nests for his other birds- three chickens, two ducks, a goose, a swan, and (out of place as they looked amongst the farm fowl) two peafowl. It was easy to keep so many pets when you could pay people to look after them. The bird room opened up to an outdoor enclosure, but this time of day they were all in their nests.

“Pretty cool, right?” Lacie said. “Wanna feed em’? I’m the host’s plus-one. Don’t worry, he won’t mind.”

The woman seemed pretty impressed. “Sure,” she replied.

Lacie showed her to the plastic barrel of dried corn in the corner. The birds crowded them, eager, which made them laugh.

After they’d spent a while feeding the birds, the woman had cheered up significantly, and so Lacie tried to make conversation.

“So. My name’s Lacie. And you know why I’m here. What’s your name, and why are you here? And why don't you want to be here? Because it's obvious you don't.”

The woman rolled her eyes. “Abby Lambert. Nice to meet you, Lacie. I’m here because Joey Drew begged me to be his plus one so he wouldn’t have to come alone. And... instead of telling people that I was his friend or his coworker, or lying and telling people I was his girlfriend, he made up this lie that I’d won a contest to get to go with him. That I was his biggest fan. I’ll be honest- that pissed me off. He didn’t think it was right for his image, I guess."

“Oof, that sucks. You know, I’m just one of Bertrum’s engineers, and I don’t know an eighth of the high society stuff he does, but he would still never do that.”

“Thanks. And thanks for taking me out for some air.”

“No problem.”

It was a few more minutes of feeding birds before Lacie decided to throw her shot. “If Joey wants to be a jerk he can stay here on his own. Wanna get out of here?”

Abby looked Lacie up and down, and suddenly Lacie wished she were wearing something a little more revealing than this ill-fitting suit- especially since Abby’s was accentuating every curve of her body. But Abby clearly liked what she saw.

“Yeah. Yeah, that would be nice.”

The two took a cab to Abby’s apartment, where they spent the night.

After the one-night stand, Abby had left Lacie her number. If one night was good, why not make it several? And then, Lacie had surprised her by asking her out. To an art museum.

“You like art, right? It’s not just a job? I mean, I wouldn’t want you taking me to a construction site.”

God, she was a dork. A muscular, handsome dork. Abby had to roll her eyes at herself for being so caught up on a woman, but she eventually broke down and asked Joey a few pointed questions during their lunch break a few days before the date. “So, Mr. Romantic- can you give me some tips about how to sweep a woman off her feet? I’m meeting someone tonight.”

Joey had smiled teasingly at her. “Oh, my. The ever-serious Abby Lambert is lovestruck!”

“You’re gross. It was good sex. That’s all.”

“Right. That’s why you came to me for advice. Well, I’d say just be natural. Be friendly, make jokes, find common interests, all that common-sense stuff. And then at the end of the night invite her over for some wine and radio, read her signs, and that’s when you start getting physical.” Joey suddenly went from smiling and talking with his hands to being much more serious. “Oh, and... I’m sorry about the other night. You know how it is... I respect you, the art department respects you, but I can’t trust random people to do so, and I can’t avoid interacting with people who won’t.”

He didn’t even have to say that it was because she was a black woman. It was the same reason why Joey had promoted someone else ahead of her as head of the art department- he hadn’t trusted that the others would accept her authority. But, after she’d handled the art department while her ex-superior was on vacation and there hadn’t been any problems, Joey had snatched the promotion right out of his hands and put it in Abby’s. Not fair to the ex-head of the art department, but Joey rarely was. Even if he wasn’t perfect, though, he was still one of the few in this day and age who would hand a high position to her under any circumstance, and one of the few she could discuss her relationships with.

“Maybe we should just not talk about that. See you soon, Joey.” Why think about that when Abby had more cheerful things to think about?

When Lacie showed up to the art museum, she was wearing a leather jacket, scuffed jeans, and heavy boots. She’d definitely stand out in a dainty place like this.

“So, do you know anything about art?” Abby asked as they went to the first section, which featured a number of surrealist paintings.

“Not a thing!” Lacie admitted, not at all ashamed. “Are you the type who likes to teach, or the type who just wants me to shut up and enjoy it on the level I’m at?”

“I... guess I wouldn’t mind explaining some things.”

“Okay. So, this one,” Lacie gestured at a painting of half-melted clocks hanging off of tree branches and the like. “It must represent something real deep, right?”

“Well, there’s more to art than symbolism, and surrealist stuff doesn’t have to have a deeper meaning. But... maybe it means that time just melts away when you’re having fun.”

It was midnight before Abby was back in her apartment. The museum had closed before they’d felt like any time had passed, and so they’d gone for a walk together in the city and stopped at whatever shops caught their eyes. It had been fun.

Abby’s apartment was the apartment of a chronically single woman in her thirties who had made it. It was clean and organized, but not too clean and organized. It had a large window overlooking the city in the living room, and near it, an eisel had been set up, with a half-done painting on it of a sunset over a city skyline. There was a rack of oft-used wine glasses in the kitchen, lesser-used exercise equipment in the laundry room. Abby’s bedroom contained her collection of houseplants, two floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and a closet full of suits her mom had tailored for her at a reduced cost.

Joey had always said that he never wanted to get married because he didn’t want to share space with anyone else. Abby had rolled her eyes and punched his arm for that. Joey was always coming up with reasons why he didn’t want a relationship, and none of them were true. Abby, on the other hand, had just assumed and accepted that it just wouldn’t happen. The chances were against it unless she made it a priority in her life, and she was focused on career and art. Could it really happen with this hooligan? It was hard to imagine letting her into this apartment- this apartment of a woman who had made it- on a permanent basis. But, maybe. Only time would tell.

Things went from there. They continued to date for over a year. Abby taught Lacie how to draw, and Lacie taught Abby how to fight. They started spending more nights than not over at each other’s places. Joey still didn’t know about it, because Abby knew how jealous Joey got when it came to relationships. Shawn on the other hand definitely knew, and teased the hell out of Lacie for it and later came to Lacie for help with his own relationship once he got into one.

Christmas that year, Shawn had scrapped together enough funds to visit Ireland. This was a problem, because Shawn and Lacie usually spent their Christmases together. As per usual, Lacie didn’t have the means to visit her home state of Alpaccia, so it looked like it would be a lonely Christmas for her.

“You want to come visit my family?” Abby offered as Lacie had been complaining about it.

“Yeah. I’d love that,” Lacie admitted. She hadn’t had a Christmas with a real family in... well, a long time, at any rate.

Abby’s family consisted of her mother and her two-years older brother, who had brought a wife and two kids. The father had died in the war while Abby was a child. They had a traditional Christmas together- old Christmas records, decorating a tree, staying up late to play cards and chat once Abby’s niece and nephew were in bed until they could barely keep their eyes open, and then watching the kids open their presents in the morning.

It kind of hurt Lacie to see such a beautiful family, but it was nice, too. It hurt because she remembered having to go off to her friends’ houses when her parents were too high to remember to feed her. She remembered having to make her own doctor’s appointments at the age of nine, and running off to live with her big sister at fourteen. But it was still nice to be there, just because it was.

As they were packing up in the guest bedroom, Lacie started crying, and Abby took notice. She’d never seen her cry before.

“What’s wrong?

“Nothing,” she said, and thankfully Abby had left her alone about it.

It was a week later, after Lacie had had some time to think, that she made her offer. “Abby, I want to start a family with you. I know we can’t get married in the traditional sense, but we can get a place together, find some man to give us a kid, and stay together for the rest of our lives. I could even buy you a ring if you want. Do you wanna do this?”

Abby was awestruck. “Lacie... oh my God, yes. Let’s do it.”

Everything That Could Go Wrong for This Drugmaker Did

Opioids. Vaginal mesh. Testosterone. These have become some of the ugliest words in the pharmaceutical industry, telegraphing medical treatments gone awry, in some cases leaving behind disabled customers, epic legal battles, and vast capital destruction. Some of the industry’s largest companies have been mired in lawsuits and government probes over these issues. But no company has been haunted by the drug industry’s worst nightmares as mercilessly as Endo International Plc.

Just about everything that can go wrong in the world of pharma has gone wrong at Endo, which makes both branded and generic drugs. Through a dealmaking spree largely led by its former chief executive officer, the company amassed debt of more than $8 billion—five times its market capitalization. That might be tolerable for a high-growth company, but Endo faces cratering prices for generic medicines even as it must deal with a slew of litigation involving its products.

The new leadership says the Dublin, Ireland-based company can fix all this; it will just take time. “It’s very important to know that we’re not running or hiding from our challenges,” says CEO Paul Campanelli. “We’re well-equipped to handle these types of issues.”

That includes writing massive checks to get beyond some of Endo’s legal woes. As of November 2017 company officials have agreed to pay more than $3.5 billion in settlements in more than 46,000 suits over its vaginal mesh inserts alone. Endo may have to shell out more to resolve all the mesh cases, according to its U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Analysts say that should largely contain the problems over the vaginal device, but it will still drain much-needed cash.

“This is not a growth story,” Gabelli & Co. analyst Kevin Kedra says. “There’s significant pressures, mostly stemming from the debt load, and they’re probably not going to be able to make a significant dent in that until 2019.”

Campanelli has been slashing costs to help keep Endo’s finances in check. The company now operates with a staff of around 2,700, down from about 6,000 before he took the job in September 2016. It also stopped marketing its opioid pain drugs at the end of 2016.

Litigation related to Endo’s marketing of opioids remains the biggest wild card. The drugmaker faces at least 125 cases filed by U.S. state attorneys general, counties, and municipalities, alleging its salespeople downplayed the health risks of the extended-release version of its painkiller Opana while overstating its benefits, according to SEC filings. Other opioid makers, such as Johnson & Johnson and Purdue Pharma LP, face identical claims. The companies have denied the allegations.

The states and local governments have hired lawyers who helped negotiate the tobacco industry’s $246 billion master settlement in the late 1990s to handle the opioid suits. There’s no exact figure for the damages sought, and estimates of potential damages vary widely. Bloomberg Intelligence litigation analyst Holly Froum figures the total liability for all opioid makers, including Endo, could be as little as $5 billion or as high as $50 billion. “It’s obviously in a very early stage, and these things typically take years to resolve,” Campanelli says.

The company has shown it can be proactive when the need arises. Its extended version of Opana became the subject of controversy: The drug has been linked to outbreaks of viral infections like HIV as people abusing it spread diseases by sharing needles. U.S. regulators took the unprecedented step last June of asking the company to take the drug off the market. Endo could have appealed that decision, but Campanelli opted to comply—cutting off a drug that racked up around $533 million in sales in a three-year period starting in 2014.

Campanelli is busy putting out fires that were years in the making. In 2013 the drugmaker hired Rajiv De Silva, an ex-Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. executive and former McKinsey & Co. consultant. At the time, Valeant was blazing a new trail for Big Pharma expansion: buying up other companies, cutting research, and jacking up drug prices. With De Silva as CEO, Endo became a prolific dealmaker, acquiring companies and drug rights—from acquisitions in the hundreds of millions of dollars to vying for assets in the $10 billion-plus range against Valeant. De Silva insisted at the time that Endo wasn’t another Valeant, which ran into massive financial and legal troubles, and said he was doing deals to build a company that didn’t need to rely on deals to grow. He declined to comment for this story.

De Silva’s biggest acquisition was the $8.05 billion purchase of Par Pharmaceutical in May 2015, which gave Endo a large foothold in the generics business. Endo, which assumed Par’s debt, financed the deal with borrowings and proceeds from a $2.3 billion equity offering. The Par buyout came at the height of the company’s run: Endo’s stock price peaked around $96 in April 2015. That was more than triple the level when De Silva took over. But concerns over litigation and debt, as well as post-Valeant angst over specialty drugmakers, conspired to drive the stock down over the following year. Ultimately, Campanelli replaced De Silva. “We said from Day One, we’re not fixing this in 12 months,” Campanelli says.

Another hangover from the De Silva era is Endo’s testosterone litigation. The company faces about 1,300 patient suits claiming its testosterone-boosting gels caused fatal heart attacks in some users. How those suits might fare remains uncertain. Two federal court juries in Chicago last year held AbbVie Inc. responsible for injuries suffered by men taking its AndroGel testosterone booster—a product similar to Endo’s—and awarded a total of $290 million in damages. But one of those verdicts was later thrown out by a judge. In November, Endo’s Auxilium unit won the first case to come to trial over its Testim testosterone gel.

Still, Endo’s problems could get worse. The company is likely to face many more Opana suits before any settlement is reached, says Richard Ausness, a University of Kentucky law professor, and Endo may be forced to take extreme measures to pay them out. It could adopt the playbook used by companies sued for selling asbestos-laced products in the 1980s and 1990s by setting up a bankruptcy trust to resolve opioid cases, according to Ausness. That would allow the company to hold down settlement amounts, he says.

“Their debt numbers look terrible. And when you factor in the thousands of opioid suits they may wind up facing, they may have no choice but to ask the bankruptcy courts to help them dispose of those cases,” he says.

Campanelli has heard the B-word before. “The use of the word ‘bankruptcy’—it’s not something that we’re contemplating at this point in time,” he says. “We’re looking to collaborate to deal with the opioid situation. If we ever got to that process, and I’m not saying that we’re thinking of it, it would be years and years before we would be addressing it.”

It’s also possible that any opioid manufacturer settlement could be structured in such a way that Endo doesn’t end up underwater. “There could be some giant master settlement—it would just make life that much more difficult for Endo, but I don’t think these state AGs are going to make Endo go out of business,” says Gabelli’s Kedra.

Despite the financial and legal clouds, Endo officials say they’re concentrating on expanding the business and working on new injectable drugs. The company is also developing one of its key products, Xiaflex, which is used to treat a hand deformity and curvature of the penis, for new uses such as improving the appearance of cellulite. Cosmetic drugs, such as Allergan Plc’s Botox, have turned into powerhouses for pharma companies, and Campanelli has been praising Xiaflex’s prospects. “It fits the model of the new Endo,” he says. Campanelli, however, still has plenty of problems from the old Endo to fix first.

Salmon and Other Fish

Whole wild salmon is a rarity in my world. Of course, we get Norwegian and Scottish salmon in many supermarkets across South Africa, some of it wild, but more often it tends to be farmed and it’s almost always in fillets. It’s also incredibly expensive, although there are significant health benefits to eating really good salmon, which are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and a great source of protein and many vitamins and minerals.

Alaska is home to the world’s largest wild salmon industry, although Ireland, Scotland, Norway and other such countries have wild salmon. Farmed salmon is a massive growth industry, and there remains some debate about whether wild or farmed salmon is better. Quite frankly, it seems common sense that wild has to be better – it is not subjected to the parasites as well as pesticides and other chemicals that are often fed to farmed salmon, it runs free and thus has more muscle and less fat, more nutrients and goodness.

It’s worth remembering that Atlantic salmon from Norway and Scotland is on the WWF’s SASSI (Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative) orange list which means you should think twice before buying it. Rainbow trout, which I think is equally delicious, is on the green list and definitely a good alternative.  

Seeing a really big whole wild salmon during a recent demonstration at Ballymaloe Cookery School was quite something. It had been frozen as there are strict rules about when wild salmon can be fished in Ireland, which is one of the few refuges for wild salmon and sea trout. The bigger wild salmon average about 4kg, but the one being cooked this week in demo was about 6kg which is really large.

There are several ways to cook salmon, including grilling, baking, poaching and smoking. This week, we focused on poaching and smoking salmon and other fish and it’s quite clear that I need to invest in some equipment if I want to do this properly back in SA. For poaching a whole fish, you need a fish kettle which is a long, narrow saucepan with a perforated rack on which the fish rests as it cooks, with handles on each end to lift the whole fish out the water intact. If you don’t have one of these, you can poach the fish in water in a casserole, but I can see the potential for disaster in this.

The secret to poaching a fish is to remember that the less water you use the better as you keep more flavour. And it seems that one should never, ever poach a cutlet or fillet of fish because you lose a whole lot of flavour. I will say that the whole poached salmon we did was incredibly tasty, accompanied by some hollandaise sauce and peas with butter. Divine!

Smoking fish is a real art, although I did it with a fair amount of success. I hot smoked some cod with wood chips – using a stainless steel smoker on top of the hob. It took a total of 9 minutes and emerged from the smoker quite golden from the wood chips, and tasted lovely and smoky. I have not tried cold smoking but have seen it done in the smoking shed at Ballymaloe Cookery School, and tasted the wonderful, wild, organic smoked salmon. I am definitely a convert in terms of wild vs farmed salmon!

And then there was the soufflé. Now, I am a little nervous of soufflés – well, aren’t we all? I’ve tried making them all before – sweet, savoury, twice baked, you name it. Some have been ok, some disasters but none would I call fabulous. This week I made a fabulous soufflé, and it was pretty straightforward. It rose beautifully in the oven rather than looking like a flat scone which has happened before, it tasted great and I made it whilst doing a million other things. So it can be done, with a good recipe and a good teacher. Yay!

The most complex thing I did this week was the Ballymaloe Apple Tart. Complex because it involved two different types of pastry – a shortcrust pastry on the bottom, and a flaky pastry on the top. Flaky pastry takes two days to make so it involves quite a lot of effort and let me tell you, the amount of butter in this pastry is staggering. Anyway, I was rather adventurous and made a plum and apple tart, which seemed to hold its own and work out well. I very much doubt I will make this tart again, but if you have the strength, then go for it. It looks good and tastes great.

What I really enjoyed making, and loved eating even more, was the cinnamon ice-cream, which was a variation of the original vanilla ice-cream. The basis of it is a custard, so you warm and infuse some full-cream milk with vanilla or cinnamon for about 15 minutes and let it cool while beating up egg yolks and sugar so that the mixture is fluffy and firmish - you should be able to make a figure of eight with the batter. Cream is part of this delightful desert, mix it all together and pop it into an ice-cream maker. My word, now that is an excellent ice-cream. Seriously, seriously good, particularly with the warm apple tart.

The Green Egg’s air vent can, however, be subjected to rust meaning you need to cover it while raining which is where the given ceramic top comes in handy.

6. Bottom Draft Cleaning

Another innovative and a patented feature of the Kamado Joe is the stainless-steel bottom ash-drawer that sits on the bottom draft. You simply need to pull it out and throw out the ash and dust remains.Talk about easy and convenient cleaning!

The Big Green Egg comes with an ash rake where you need to physically clean out the bottom layer. Slide the metal screen mesh and use your rake to remove the ashes –could be a little messy.

7. Underlying Stand or Rack

The Kamado Joe has a welded stand offering great grip and stability; no chance of your wonderful food toppling over. Though the wheels of the stand are quite small, they are gripped with metallic locks.

The Green Egg has an assembled stand and is equipped with wheels of larger diameter that work great in steering through bumps and pits. But overall the Green Egg is a tiny notch down when it comes to stability than the Kamado Joe with the lack of locks.

Fit For A King?

IN 2009 DEREK MALLOY, FROM Northern Ireland, bought a most interesting Daimler.

- The Daimler fitted out for a bed-ridden patient. The rear door and handle are false. In a letter to “The Driving Member”, the magazine of the Daimler and Lanchester Owners Club, he asked for help in discovering its history as virtually no history had come with it. The car sounded interesting so I contacted Derek. The car was a 20ft long 1936 Daimler Double six limousine of which only 9 were eve built and two were in use with the Royal Household of King George V. Derek’s car had been specifically designed to transport a disabled or invalid owner in comfort. The order for it came from Daimler Hire Ltd and the work was carried out by Lancefield Coachbuilders of London W.10. The car was first displayed on the Daimler Hire Ltd stand at the 1936 Olympia Motor Show. Unusually the rear off-side door does not open even though it has hinges and a door handle, it’s a dummy, The Autocar gave this car a full page write up in their October 30th Motor Show number in 1936. They wrote: “On opening the nearside door to the rear compartment, however, the reason for the dummy door on the off-side is at once seen, for a full-length bed is fitted along the whole of the offside. On the nearside there is a folding and swivelling very comfortable armchair, which fits flush into the division when not required. This allows the bed to be swivelled until the foot come into the doorway….so that the bed and the occupants can be removed. There is also a comfortable armchair seat at the rear on the near side, whilst behind the head of the bed there is a burr walnut cupboard to receive Thermos flask and medical equipment.” I must add that when Derek received the car this cupboard had four empty porcelain wee-wee bottles (pictured below) in it! There is also a wash basin fitted on the nearside hidden under a hinged panel. There is a heater with controls on the bulkhead and telephone communication system with the driver. For discretion there are silk blinds on all the rear windows. Luggage can be carried on a hinged platform which drops down at the rear. Cases can also be carried on the roof with a special rack which folds down when not in use, access to the roof is via hinged steps built into the cars centre pillar. Derek Malloy told me that the car is in very original though neglected and unrestored condition. The previous lady owner had in turn inherited from her late father’s estate. It is thought to have gone to Ireland in the late 1940’s where it lost its UK number DLY 258 for an Irish one MZ 8074.

Who could have ordered such a vehicle in the first place? Was there enough hire work around for a top class invalid hire car? A rumour without substance came with the car that it was designed for King George V and that the King had died before he could take delivery of it. I think there is a strong possibility that this was the case. After all the King was taken seriously ill with septicaemia in 1928 and dropped out of public life for two years Later he spent 3 month convalescing in Bognor (which resulted in Regis being added to the town’s title). Towards the end he was not a well monarch. On the 15th January 1936 he died at Sandringham. Quite how we research this aspect I do not know as the Daimler records were destroyed in the war.
