This lady: I have to lie to my colleagues because I grew up working class, and I don’t have proper upper-middle class interests.

How could I bring my whole self to work when that was what I was up against? So I did what every Black person is taught: code switching. 

 In case you haven’t heard of it, code switching is when people of colour make subtle adjustments to their behaviour and manner of speaking in order to help blend into different social and professional situations – ones that are unaccepting of our authentic selves.

I’m especially confused by the idea that this is somehow unique to black people instead of something everyone does, all the time.

It’s also ironic for me, personally, because I had a job where I had to talk to people on the phone, and I’d deliberately make myself sound more bri’ish so they (hopefully) wouldn’t assume I was a scam caller.

I wonder if this person has any actual familiarity with the Indian-British and Chinese-Scottish communities. And even if they did, not everyone in that community is going to act like a “typical” member. Especially since the books are set 27-35 years ago.

Ironically, their previous post in the thread specifically pointed out that their experiences were not representative.

“I assume that lack of racial diversity in white people’s favor probably has a bad reason, especially if the area in question is large. This is totally not a racist thing to say.”

You don’t see much black people in rural Japan, even in large cities. Do you assume that must have a “bad reason” too?

“If you have majority white friends, even in majority white areas, that’s wrong, somehow, and you should actively try to change that.”

Turns out people aren’t actually obligated to meet your racial friend quotas. And they’re less likely to do it if you snidely insinuate that they’re racist.

It’s also more likely to make them double-think interations with non-whites, which produces more mental discomfort, which is, um, bad, in the long run.

And personally, if someone told me they were friends with me to meet a quota, I would not want to be friends with them.

Also, the UK is 10+% white today. In the 90s, much less so. And it’s not evenly distributed. Some places have a lot more non-white people than others.

Also, what does “serves a white audience” even mean, exactly? I’m a non-American black man, and I generally don’t care about the race of protagonists in my media.

The idea that minorities and women can only empathize with characters who share labels with them is actually pretty prejudiced.
