Current trends in Orthodox conversion are all in the wrong direction: Converts have to wait longer; their prior conversions are questioned; they are made to convert again before marriage; they are encouraged to distance themselves from non-Jewish relatives. While each rabbi needs the freedom to lead locally, there also need to be integrity boards to provide training and oversight, and serious standards for both the convert and the community. The legal standard for entry should be made more inclusive, and the standard for education and support made more rigorous.

The process needs to be performed with transparent expectations and timelines, no financial cost, greater respect for personal privacy, increased women’s leadership, broader ethical and spiritual parameters for eligibility and fair treatment of all candidates. Embracing a more pluralistic approach to Jewish identity requires a break from bureaucratic central authorities.

A small group of homogeneous Orthodox authorities, continuing to pursue more stringent requirements to the detriment of the wider and more diverse Jewish community, should not have the unchecked power to determine who can be a Jew. Nor should candidates need to fly across the country to meet a religious court because local authorities are not deemed worthy of handling the conversion. This grants too much authority to national and regional centralized powers and puts the inclusive nature of Judaism at risk. When a convert emerges from the mikvah, he or she should feel uplifted by a process of inclusion and holiness, not deflated by alienation and degradation.

Converting to Judaism

Despite the sometimes lengthy and challenging process—and concerns that converted Jews are not "100 percent" Jewish—many converts find fulfillment and a sense of identity in the Jewish faith. According to Shmuly Yanklowitz, an Orthodox rabbi and himself a convert, Judaism will need to become more inclusive and more accepting of converts to survive in the 21st century.

1. Thank Goodness I read this - Name a book that changed your life Midnight by Erin Hunter. It’s the first book of the second series of Warriors, but it’s actually the first Warriors book I read because I saw it in a bookstore in America when I was 10 and didn’t know it was the second series. I can’t imagine having not read Warriors, and I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t seen that book that day. I feel like I probably would have found my way to the books anyway.

2. Thank Goodness this wasn’t in public - Name a Book you’re glad you read it at home Any Warriors book because I always cry reading them and I need a safe place with no distractions to read them so I can fully concentrate on them and not be self-conscious about my reactions.

3. Thank Goodness there are Tissues - A Book that turned you into a crying mess I’ll have to go Warriors again because I literally cry every time, and I can’t think of any other books at the moment that I’ve cried reading.

4. Thank Goodness I don’t have to reread this - Name a book you didn’t like The Book Thief. I probably would have had pretty neutral feelings towards this book as it’s not really my thing but I had to read it for high school English and I find being forced to read a book can really provoke negative feelings towards it.

5. Thank Goodness it’s Fiction - Name a Book character you would never want to meet in real life I can’t actually think of any at the moment. As is well known on here, the only fiction I really read is Warriors, and I’d love to meet every character from there, even the ‘evil/bad’ ones. I haven’t read any other fiction for years so there aren’t really enough characters at the forefront of my mind to choose from.

6. Thank Goodness I’m (not) single - Name 3 Characters you would totally want to date Again I’ll have to go with the same answer as the previous question, as the only characters that come to mind are Warriors ones and I’m not a furry. :P

7. Thank Goodness for friends - If this book was a human, it would be your best friend Essential Judaism by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin. It’s one of my favourite books, a very comprehensive encyclopedia/reference book all about Judaism. I feel like we could have endless discussions about Jewish topics.

8. Thank Goodness for editing - Name a book you’d like to rewrite The Jewish Vegan by Shmuly Yanklowitz. This was a book I was really looking forward to reading but it was quite a let down. Partly because the actual content of the book was a bit all over the place, and also because it was very poorly edited, with frequent typos and grammatical errors.
