Now that I've gotten some practice painting details on my kits, I can finally do the HGUC Gundam Alex the justice it deserves! This is one of my favourite Gundam mobile suits and I wish there were more modern versions of it! I hear the MG is very good so I'll definitely be picking that up, but I saw this HG at the hobby store and I had to get it.

Initially I was quite disappointed with the use of colour correcting stickers and lack of colour detail overall, since not even all the stickers allow it to be fully colour accurate. That's when I decided that I'll take the plunge to paint the details in myself, and I can absolutely recommend doing this if you want to take your model kits to the next level! It's very satisfying work and the sense of pride you get once you're done painting is fantastic. I decided to panel line the pieces as I built the kit for this, so I don't have a pure out of box picture for it, but I think the glow-up between building and painting it will make up for that! Here it is out of the box, with just panel lining done on it:

The kit itself is nothing to write home about. It's an old kit, and you can definitely feel it's age. The articulation is nothing special, the way the joints hold together can be quite loose and the shield loves to fall off of the arm. I think it holds up well enough to get it if you really like the Alex, but I don't think there's anything really here for you if you don't have the sentimental value going for it. The included armour pieces for it look pretty cool though:

But enough of that, here's what you all came for, the finished product:

I'm really really happy with how this turned out! I learned a lot about effective painting techniques while doing this and I'm excited to do more painting! In case you end up missing some of the details, I painted all of the verniers throughout the mobile suit, so on the shoulders, waist, chest and legs. I also painted in the details for the eyes using a metallic green, as well as the green sensors above the head and behind it. I also painted the venting and vulcan machine guns on the sides of the head with a dark gray. Lastly, I painted the tops of the knee armour with red.

One thing I can recommend if you are planning on doing any painting is to do it after panel lining kits, and to use acrylic paints if you are hand painting like me. The panel liner I use (gundam pour type markers) aren't water soluble, which means that cleaning up any excess paint is made very easy if you just dip a q-tip into some water.

The next thing I'd like to learn about with modelling is topcoating, since that will make sure that the paint stays on the kit and doesn't chip off.

There’s no WAY I can choose JUST five, so have my favorite from each show I’ve watched so far!

First off, for The Witch From Mercury, we have the MD-0064 Darilbalde!

Next, from Iron Bloodee Orphans, we have the ASW-G-11 Gundam Gusion Rebake! (I personally like the rounder shapes better than Full City’s sharp edges)

None of 0079’s suits SUPER stood out to me, so for that I’ll go with the funny name; the MS-14A Gelgoog

Now. Zeta had some good stuff going on, what with the RX-178 Gundam mk II’s original color scheme, the ORX-005 Gaplant, and the Psyco Gundam, but none of it beats out my queen the AMX-004 Qubeley!

ZZ had some even better stuff going on, with a second Psyco Gundam, and a better color scheme for the Qubeley, and a silly name (the Bawoo), but they’re all DEMOLISHED by the absolutely GORGEOUS NZ-000 Quin Mantha/Queen Mansa

Char’s Counterattack didn’t have as many going for it, but the RX-93 Nu Gundam did stand out to me!

And with the Char Divorce Quadrilogy over, it’s time to move on to the OVAs! Starting with War In The Pocket, which really didn’t have very many mobile suits, but! The RX-78NT-1 Gundam Alex, specifically when it had the additional armor, is really cool!

08th MS Team is about as bad in its variety, so naturally I’m going to go with the RX-79[G]Ez-8 Gundam

Now. MS IGLOO was. Rough. But y’know what? The RTX-440 Ground Assault Type Guntank is actually really cool, regardless of what was going on with. Everything else there

0083: Stardust Crusaders gets a lot of shit, for a lot of valid reasons, but good LORD is the RX-78GP02A Gundam Physalis a sexy machine

That's.... a lot of them. The base RX-78 series has at least 18 models in it, and you can easily add twice or three times that with subsequent models. I'll limit it to up to RX-93, because after this, the departure from the original RX-78 design is big enough IMO.

Well with that said

#1: RX-78NT-1 Gundam NT-1

I mean duh. Aside from the really good story of WitP, this model basically incorporated design decisions that became the baseline of later RXs, like the cockpit or the motors. Also it's one of the first Fed machines to also use Zaku research for improvement.

And most importantly the design slaps a lot.

#2: RX-79[G]Ez-8 Gundam Ez8

Probably the least RX-78 of the list, but it's my favourite overall so here it is anyway. It's rugged, it's made of leftover parts (and even some Zaku parts). It's stripped down to be optimized for use in gravity (meaning it's not even space-worth).

Love it.

#3: RX-93 ν Gundam

I mean, it's a fan-favourite for a reason. Aside from the kickass asymmetrical design, it is essentially the pinnacle of the RX line (not counting the Unicorn of course, which is the literal pinnacle of that line, but as I said it's also far enough of a departure to be considered separate IMO). It's the first Gundam to have funnels (though those are bits but whatever). You can really tell that Amuro participated in the design of this machine.

It's got Psycho-Frame, a tech that wasn't ever designed to be included into a Gundam. Why? Because Char cannot pass up any opportunity to fight Amuro on higher and higher stakes.

#4: FA-78 Full Armor Gundam

Look at this. It's got 3 sabers, 1 double beam rifle, 52 missiles, 1 beam cannon, 5 rocket launchers, more missiles, potentially cluster mini-missiles too, 4 large shields, including 2 held by a pair of extra arms, and is still able to function with a core block.

This a walking armoury. It's literally my warforged character Star, but bigger and in space. Ridiculous.

#5: RX-78GP03 Gundam "Dendrobium"

So I’ve started doing gunpla recently. It’s fun to watch something that’s in *so* many pieces turn into a giant mecha. Also fun little thing, the red mech, Sazabi, is at 1/144 scale while the other two are at 1/100 scale and yet it’s still a little bigger than them. The 1/100 version must be huge!
