RVG- Brain Worms (Fire)
Wow, that’s all I have to say on his new, 3rd, long-player from Melbourne, Australia’s RVG (Romy Vager Group)’
I’d heard the band’s sophomore effort, Feral, first when it came out a few years ago (then worked my way back to their strong debut). As good as those two records were, Brain Worms tops them with a crystalline production, dazzling performances and flat-out great songs.
Vocalist Romy Vager has a strong, emotive set of pipes, but even those words don’t really do her justice while guitarist Reuben Bloxham is an absolute master, doing both restraint and bluster in equal parts. The rhythm section of drummer Marc Nolte and bassist Isabele Wallace are precise and can be flashy without being showy. The band is tight.
Oh and the songs! Gorgeous opener “Common Ground” leads right into the punchy, soaring “Midnight Sun” where Bloxham’s guitar slashes and burns while Vager shouts “Yeah I know, that talking to you doesn’t work anymore!” and “It’s Not Easy” is another pretty one with some lovely Marr-esque guitar chords.
Later on the title track has Vager laying it all out there “(Now my kids won’t talk to me and my wife is leaving me…”) while the band charges ahead and the slow burn of the great “Squid” is among the best cuts on here as is the brilliant jangle of “Giant Snake.” (the final song ‘Tropic of Cancer” is a superb as well).
This band is currently firing on all cylinders and have really nailed it here. Brain Worms is an emotional, brilliant record by a band at the top of its game. One of my favorites of 2023 so far!
