Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 champions Mumbai Indians dropped a bomb on the entire cricketing universe as they announced the decision to replace skipper Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder arrived from Gujarat Titans as part of a trade after MI decided to send Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore. But, little did fans know that the trade from GT wasn't in the capacity of a player but also a 'captain'. But, what led to this change in the leadership role?Rohit Sharma, a man who led Mumbai Indians to 5 IPL titles in 10 years, was replaced by Hardik Pandya, a player who led Gujarat Titans to two consecutive IPL finals, winning one of them. The move hints a big change in Rohit's situation, considering his role as India's captain in white-ball teams is also under question since the conclusion of Cricket World Cup 2023.We take a look at the factors that might have prompted Mumbai Indians to make the change:Rohit Sharma's Form:While Rohit had an impressive Cricket World Cup, his form for MI over the last couple of years wasn't the best. In IPL 2022 season, he scored 268 runs in 14 games at an average of 19.14 while in the 2023 season saw him scoring 332 runs 16 matches at an average of 20.75.While it can't be said that captaincy was taking a toll on Rohit's performance, MI did not to make a big change if they are to challenge for the title again, while also paving the way for the future.IPL 2025 Mega Auction:With just one season to go before the IPL 2025 mega auction gets underway, Mumbai Indians had to lay out plans for the future. Before the last mega auction, the BCCI allowed franchises to retain a maximum of three Indian and 2 overseas players. The complex situation saw them release Hardik but the franchise doesn't want to repeat the same mistakes this time.In all likeliness, MI's Indian retentions would be Suryakumar Yadav (World No. T20I batter), Jasprit Bumrah (arguably the best T20 bowler in the world) and skipper Hardik Pandya. While the exact rules for the IPL 2025 auction aren't known yet, Rohit looks like a big candidate to be released if only three Indians are allowed to be retained.Smooth Transition:With Rohit Sharma 36 and still a capable batter, Mumbai Indians want to make the captaincy change at a time where the Hitman can oversee the transition and help Hardik become an even better leader. By making a captaincy change early, MI are reducing the risk of finding late solutions to the problem in a scenario where Rohit might no longer be with the team.Topics mentioned in this article

The decision of Mumbai Indians (MI) to appoint Hardik Pandya their captain by replacing Rohit Sharma has definitely not gone down well with many followers of the team. Expressing their disappointment, many fans unfollowed the Instagram account of MI with the franchise witnessing a noticeable dip. MI lost more than 5 lakh followers in less than 24 hours since the announcement of the captaincy change. By the time, this news was written, MI's fan following on Instagram was reduced to 12.6 million. The announcement about change of captaincy from Mumbai Indians came after Hardik made a return to the franchise last month, following a high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans, whom he led in the past two seasons. In a statement, Mumbai Indians said the change in leadership was part of their future planning and thanked Rohit for his exemplary service to the franchise.Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL franchise alongside Chennai Super Kings who both have won five titles each.Rohit, who recently led India to the ODI World Cup final, had been captaining the franchise since 2013 when they lifted first of their five IPL trophies. The other titles under Rohit's captaincy came in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Mumbai Indians had made it to the play-offs in IPL 2023.Meanwhile, Hardik contributed to Mumbai's glorious run in the IPL, playing a key role in the team's triumph between 2015 and 2021 before leaving to captain the Titans. He led them to the title on its IPL debut in 2022 and to a runners-up finish earlier this year. The significant development also raises questions about Rohit's future in the shortest format. The 36-year-old was left heartbroken after India fell short in the final hurdle against Australia in the ODI World Cup at home after winning 10 games on the trot.Another ODI World Cup appearance seems unlikely but he could be back to lead India in the T20 World Cup in six months' time.Interestingly, Rohit and Virat Kohli have not turned up for India in the T20 format since the semifinal exit at the World Cup in Australia last year.(With PTI Inputs)Topics mentioned in this article

File photo of Hardik Pandya (left) and Rohit Sharma.© BCCI/IPLMumbai Indians (MI) on Friday announced a massive move. The franchise appointed Hardik Pandya as its captain. The all-rounder, who was recently roped in from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash transfer, replaced Rohit Sharma in the role. Rohit captained MI for 10 years, helping the side win a record-equalling five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles. The change in captaincy didn't go down well with many MI fans. Some reports also claimed that MI's X handle lost a massive amount of followers after the announcement was made.Reacting to some of the fans' reactions on Hardik replacing Rohit as captain, former South Africa great AB de Villiers said that some people "took it a bit personally"."I think there are a lof of people happy about it, a lot of people upset about it. I read a post that said Mumbai Indians' social platform lost like 1 million followers. I am not sure how accurate that is but obviously some people took it a bit personally with Rohit having to move on and make place for Hardik," AB de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.Backing the change in captaincy, the former South Africa captain said: "I don't think it is a bad move for Mumbai Indians. (it's) something new. Rohit has had fantastic success over the years, winning a lot of trophies. Maybe being the captain for India puts a lot of pressure on him as well. Now it's maybe just time for him to settle a bit and play and enjoy the game and give the pressure to someone else."That could be the reason. I don't think it could go any deeper than that. I don't think Hardik would have come in with a dominating mentality saying like, 'I am not playing if I am not captain.' I don't think it went along these lines."I really do think Rohit made a strategic decision for himself, to get himself a bit rested and be fresher for his batting skills and make sure that he scores runs."Topics mentioned in this article

Indian cricket team batter Suryakumar Yadav made history by equalling Rohit Sharma's sensational record of scoring four T20I centuries during the match against South Africa on Thursday. It was a brilliant knock from the current skipper as he guided his team to victory and after the match, he had an honest reaction to the massive achievement. He recognised the magnitude of what he has achieved and even called Rohit a 'great of the game'. “It feels good to equal Rohit Sharma's 4 centuries, he's a great of the game. It's a good achievement. Hoping to continue performing consistently. I'm very happy,” Suryakumar said in a video released by BCCI on social media.Suryakumar Yadav hit a dazzling century as India levelled their series against South Africa with a crushing 106-run win.Suryakumar made 100 in a total of 201 for seven after India were sent in to bat.South Africa crashed to 95 all out with left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav taking a career-best five for 17 on his 29th birthday."We wanted to play a fearless brand of cricket. That was one box we wanted to tick – to put runs on the board and then defend it," said Suryakumar at the post-match presentation when he was named player of the match and player of the series. The Indian captain thrashed eight sixes and seven fours in making his fourth T20 international century off 55 balls. He was caught at deep square leg off the next ball as India lost three wickets, including a run-out, in the final over, bowled by Lizaad Williams.Suryakumar was off the field for most of the South African innings after twisting his left ankle while fielding in the third over.Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took over the captaincy and played a significant role in South Africa's collapse by dismissing their captain Aiden Markram, for a hard-hit 25, with his first ball."It's not that bad. I'm walking, so it's all good," Suryakumar said of the injury.Mohammed Siraj set the tone for India's bowling effort with a superb maiden over to Reeza Hendricks, with three slips in place for the last two balls of the over. But it was the spinners who did the major damage, with Jadeja taking two for 25 and Kuldeep ripping through the lower order, taking the last four wickets off seven balls. The pitch had looked excellent for batting when Suryakumar and Yashasvi Jaiswal (60) punished the bowling in a fourth-wicket stand of 112 off 70 balls but Jadeja and Kuldeep both gained turn and occasional low bounce."Credit to the (Indian) batters for making it look easy for them," said Markram.Suryakumar went out to bat after left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj took two wickets off successive balls in the third over. He was relatively subdued in taking 23 balls to make his first 25 runs but then unleashed his full array of strokes, including hits for leg-side sixes off good length balls. The teams start a three-match one-day international series at the same venue on Sunday.(With AFP inputs)Topics mentioned in this article

Renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle believes that it was an 'open secret' that Hardik Pandya was going to replace Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai Indians skipper. The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise announced the decision ahead of the 2024 season after Hardik completed a sensational move from Gujarat Titans. Bhogle took to social media to react to the MI decision and said that although this is a move forward for the team, Hardik will face a tough challenge to keep up with the ambition of the side."That Hardik Pandya would be captain of @mipaltan was an open secret. Rohit Sharma can lay claim to being, with MS Dhoni, the finest leader in the #IPL. It may not be a bad idea to let him relax and have fun because the IPL can take a lot out of you and he will have led India in 5 tests a little before that. While this is a move keeping in mind the next few years, it will be a huge challenge for Hardik given the number of stars in the side and the ambition of the franchise. It makes #MumbaiIndians the team to watch this year," he posted on X (formerly known as Twitter). That Hardik Pandya would be captain of @mipaltan was an open secret. The five-time announced that Hardik Pandya will replace Rohit Sharma as captain of the franchise, starting with IPL 2024. Hardik, who left MI to join Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2022, was traded in by the Mumbai-based franchise last month. The latest development came as a shock to many, especially fans of Rohit. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared a special post for Rohit, who had joined the franchise in 2011.Pathan said that Rohit's name will always be synonymous with the franchise, having led MI to five IPL titles during his tenure as captain."Kitne bhi saal ki purani ye franchise kyon na ho jaae sabse upar naam Rohit Sharma ka rahega. @ImRo45 @mipaltan," Pathan captioned a post on social media platform X (former Twitter).Kitne bhi saal ki purani ye franchise kyon na ho jaae sabse upar naam Rohit Sharma ka rahega. @ImRo45 @mipaltan— Irfan Pathan (@IrfanPathan) December 15, 2023Earlier in a statement on Friday, Mumbai Indians said the change in leadership was part of their future planning and thanked Rohit for his exemplary service to the franchise.Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL franchise alongside Chennai Super Kings who both have won five titles each.Rohit, who recently led India to the ODI World Cup final, had been captaining the franchise since 2013 when they lifted first of their five IPL trophies. The other titles under Rohit's captaincy came in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Right from the time Hardik Pandya was roped in by Mumbai Indians, there were enough speculations about the captaincy of the five-time champions in the IPL 2024. When the rumours of Hardik Pandya moving back to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans were doing the rounds, former India opener Aakash Chopra made an interesting observation on his YouTube channel. "A rumour is doing the rounds that Hardik is moving towards Mumbai. It has been heard, no confirmation has come. If he is leaving, firstly Gujarat are releasing him - won once and reached the final in next season. If he is leaving, will he be made Mumbai's captain? Why would you go if you are not being made the captain?" said Chopra on his YouTube channel. Now, the rumours have come true as Mumbai Indians, on Friday, officially confirmed that Hardik Pandya will lead them at the IPL 2024.Commenting on this transition Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance, Mumbai Indians said - “It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. Under his guidance, MI became one of the most successful and loved teams ever. Rohit Sharma agreed to play under Hardik Pandya in the next IPL.In 31 matches for GT from 2022-23, Pandya scored 833 runs at an average of 37.86 and a strike rate of over 133, with six half-centuries and a best score of 87*. The one news that has been making the headlines in Indian cricket since Friday is the appointment of Hardik Pandya as the new Mumba Indians captain in place of Rohit Sharma. While Hardik Pandya has earlier led Gujarat Titans to two successive IPL finals, winning one of them, Rohit Sharma has been one of the most successful captains in the history of the T20 franchise league. Rohit Sharma commands a huge fan following and his removal as the skipper was met with some strong reactions from Mumbai Indian supporters. Now, a new report has claimed that Rohit Sharma was informed about the need of change in Mumbai Indians captaincy around the start of the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, which began  in the first week of October. According to the report in Indian Express, Rohit Sharma agreed to play under Hardik Pandya in IPL 2024.Hardik Pandya, who had left Mumbai Indians to join Gujarat Titans in 2022, was bought back ahead of the IPL 2024. The report claimed that Hardik Pandya's condition was that he would return to Mumbai Indians if he is made the captain. The MI management then decided on the way forward and made Rohit Sharma aware of their decision.Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday named Hardik Pandya as their captain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Hardik replaced a highly-successful Rohit Sharma, who led the IPL giants to five trophies. The announcement from Mumbai Indians came after Hardik made a return to the franchise last month, following a high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans, whom he led in the past two seasons. The 2024 IPL could well be Rohit Sharma's last as a player in the Mumbai Indians jersey after the popular franchise announced Hardik Pandya as its skipper on Friday. For Rohit, it has always been about fierce loyalty, having captained Mumbai in 11 editions and leading them to five trophies. In 2025, there will be mega auctions and it is now more than clear that Rohit is no longer in Mumbai Indians' scheme of things going forward. The IPL Governing Council will allow retention of four players - 3 Indians and 1 overseas.By common logic, the three Indians retained by MI in all likelihood would be Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. One slot belongs to a foreign recruit. However, what happens if Rohit has a great IPL this year and subsequently a satisfying T20 World Cup, where he can't be ruled out leading the national team.Interesting times are ahead as Hardik, himself, having led India in most T20s post 2022 T20 World Cup, would like to continue leading the national team in the shortest format.Rohit has many times said that he would never play for any other franchise save MI but will he change his mind as there is one IPL franchise from northern India that could well offer him a blank cheque just to be the mentor-cum-captain of the side.In a ruthless world of franchise cricket, the absence of a quote from one of the greatest IPL captains in a banal media statement issued by Mumbai Indians was striking. Though the global head of coaching Mahela Jayawardene did thank Rohit for his contribution.Only 48 hours ago, Rohit had spoken about the motivation to take one more shot at ultimate global prize on his instagram page. For someone who poured his heart out for his fans, the Indian skipper could have well spelt out his IPL future plans. The last three IPL seasons haven't gone MI's way as Hardik wasn't fully fit in 2021, Jasprit Bumrah dealt with a back injury and also a big investment in Jofra Archer never really paid off.All these things did affect MI's performance and also Rohit's stats as MI skipper. But unless Rohit spells it out explicitly, it would be very difficult to gauge what kind of communication franchise has had with one of its in-house legends.Hardik taking on mantle of captaincy will also free up Rohit, the batter, who would now just be the 'Hit Man' and if he retains the motivation, who knows one might see him playing another season, albeit in a different jersey.(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)Topics mentioned in this article

As Mumbai Indians (MI) named Hardik Pandya as the captain of the franchise, replacing Rohit Sharma, fans expressed their disappointment on social media. Rohit, who joined MI ahead of IPL 2011, was named captain of the franchise in 2013, and led them to five IPL title in the last decade. He remains the most successful captain, alongside Chennai Super Kings' MS Dhoni. Hardik, meanwhile, had left MI to join Gujarat Titans in 2022, and guided them to the title in their maiden season. He also led them to the final last year, where GT lost to CSK at the Narendra Modi Stadium. However, some fans were not happy with Rohit's removal as captain and expressed their anger on social media. Here's how Twitter:In a viral video, a fan set a Mumbai Indians jersey on fire. You deserve this @mipaltan pic.twitter.com/BdMQ06v0pe— Shreyas_s_p (@Shreyassp11) December 15, 2023In another video, another fan vented his frustration out by burning a MI cap.A Rohit Sharma fan burns the Mumbai Indians' cap. pic.twitter.com/FtlTI20VvY— Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) December 15, 2023#MumbaiIndians losing followers on Instagram after they announced #HardikPandya as their New Captain!I think #RohitSharma Fans are angry with the frenchise for replacing @ImRo45 as the Captain.Mumbai Indians lost around 1.5 Lakh followers after the announcement. pic.twitter.com/ioxbRaiXHX— Nikhil (@Risenik) December 16, 2023Earlier in a statement on Friday, Mumbai Indians said the change in leadership was part of their future planning and thanked Rohit for his exemplary service to the franchise.Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL franchise alongside Chennai Super Kings who both have won five titles each.Rohit, who recently led India to the ODI World Cup final, had been captaining the franchise since 2013 when they lifted first of their five IPL trophies. The other titles under Rohit's captaincy came in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. On Friday, Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) sprang a surprise by naming Hardik Pandya as their captain for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 in place of Rohit Sharm. There were speculations about Rohit Sharma losing the MI captaincy from the time Hardik Pandya was brought back from Gujarat Titans. Hardik made a return to the franchise last month, following a high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans, whom he led in the past two seasons. After announcing the news of the captaincy change, MI put a heartfelt post on social media for Rohit."Ro, In 2013 you took over as captain of MI. You asked us to Believe. In victories & defeats, you asked us to Smile. 10 years & 6 trophies later, here we are. Our forever captain your legacy will be etched in Blue & Gold. Thank you, Captain RO," wrote MI on X, formerly Twitter. On Saturday, Mumbai Indians' prominent member Suryakumar Yadav posted a heartbreak emoji on X, which went viral as many social media users related to the captaincy change at the IPL franchise. No one Can replace him in Mi team captaincyMumbai Indians Be Ready Your Downfall is just on the Way .#RohitSharma #MSDhoni#MumbaiIndianspic.twitter.com/yGj7xVHb7E— 𝘚 (@Swetha_little_) December 16, 2023A selfless player like you shouldn't be too worried about captaincy— Pushkar (@musafir_hu_yar) December 16, 2023WE WANT CAPTAIN ROHIT SHARMA BACK.— MI Fans Army (@MIFansArmy) December 16, 2023Suryakumar yadav deserve captaincy #shameonmumbaiindians #Captaincy pic.twitter.com/HV7Ra6BCv5— ShivRaj Yadav (@shivayadav87) December 16, 2023This Is For What Purpose,For Changing The Captain Or Hardik Become Captain Of #MI— Rajasekar Russalayan (@iamrajesh_pov) December 16, 2023In a statement on Friday, Mumbai Indians said the change in leadership was part of their future planning and thanked Rohit for his exemplary service to the franchise.Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL franchise alongside Chennai Super Kings who both have won five titles each.Rohit, who recently led India to the ODI World Cup final, had been captaining the franchise since 2013 when they lifted first of their five IPL trophies. The other titles under Rohit's captaincy came in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Mumbai Indians had made it to the play-offs in IPL 2023."We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership; his tenure as the captain of the Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary," said Mahela Jayawardene, MI's Global Head of Performance."His leadership has not only brought unparalleled success to the team but has also solidified his place as one of the finest captains in the history of the IPL."Under his guidance, MI became one of the most successful and loved teams ever. We will look forward to his guidance and experience on and off the field to further strengthen MI," he added. The significant development also raises questions about Rohit's future in the shortest format. The 36-year-old was left heartbroken after India fell short in the final hurdle against Australia in the ODI World Cup at home after winning 10 games on the trot.Another ODI World Cup appearance seems unlikely but he could be back to lead India in the T20 World Cup in six months' time.Interestingly, Rohit and Virat Kohli have not turned up for India in the T20 format since the semifinal exit at the World Cup in Australia last year. With PTI inputsTopics mentioned in this article

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh said on Thursday that senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should play in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in West Indies and USA next year. Rohit and Virat have not been part of India's T20I team since last year's 10-wicket loss to England in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 semifinals in Australia in November. Youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are being tried out in their absence and prepared for the future."I think both Virat (Kohli) and Rohit (Sharma) should be there in the World Cup...I think a good combination would be possible only when you have good senior players too with the youth. Virat and Rohit have a lot of mettle in them...I think they should play," Harbhajan told ANI.Statistically, Virat and Rohit are two of the best T20I batters. In 115 matches, Virat leads the run-scoring charts with 4,008 runs at an average of 52.73, with one century and 37 fifties. His best score is 122* and his strike rate is 137.96.Rohit is the second-highest run scorer in the format, having scored 3,853 runs at an average of 31.32 and a strike rate of 139.24. His best score is 118. He has four centuries and 29 fifties in the format. In the Caribbean, Virat has played 33 international games and scored 1,597 runs at an average of 49.90, with six centuries and seven fifties. His best score here is 200.Similarly, Rohit in this region has played 29 international matches, scoring 1,004 runs at an average of 50.20, with one century and nine fifties. His best score is 103.On India playing a young team during the tour of South Africa for a white-ball leg of the series, Harbhajan Singh said that youngsters should be given time to learn since playing in South Africa is not easy, especially for bowlers. He also said that people get judgemental about teams on the basis of results too soon and it should change."This is a young team; I think we should give them some time. We are very result-oriented, and our team is good only if they give results. That is not the case. I think that if we give them time, they will obviously learn. We will have to change ourselves a little as we judge teams on results too quickly..Results take time. This team is in the process. South Africa is not an easy place to play, especially for bowlers," said the former spinner.South Africa are leading the T20I series 1-0 and the last of the three-match T20I series will be held today. On India losing the ICC Cricket World Cup final to Australia in November, Harbhajan said that Australia played better than India in the match."India lost the World Cup final because they did not play well. Australia played better and played boldly. We succumbed to the pressure after losing the third wicket. We could have scored 280-290 runs. A lot of blame is being placed on pitch, dew and conditions, but we must accept that we did not play well under pressure," said Harbhajan. On Khelo India Para Games in Delhi, Harbhajan congratulated all the athletes playing and said that the event was a wonderful opportunity for them."Congratulations to all the para-athletes who participated and got involved in Khelo India...This is a platform where athletes get an opportunity to showcase their talent. Para athletes won more than 100 medals recently (At the Para Asian Games). It is a big thing and I am hopeful that the medal tally will increase in the days to come...," he said.(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)Topics mentioned in this article
