36 years of Sepultura this year!  A group that was a huge part of the Thrash and Groove metal movements and of course delivered us “Roots Bloody Roots” which has been an anthem amongst the metal community for so long. So this one marks their 15th Studio album, we’ve got used to the fact after all this time that this is the way the band are now so it’s not like there is any bitterness being thrown around at this point, Green has solidified his place as the voice of the band and together they’ve put out some phenomenal records, is this another one for the tally or not.

The first ¼ of the album are straight up thrash metal songs, based on that classic old school Sepultura style. “Isolation” is just that, high intensity chorus build ups and high octane pace with screams and thick distorted riffs and a mean ass guitar solo to really complete the vibe. “Means to an End” though is far superior in my eyes it's just go that extra something, starts off with an ominous enough sounding riff and slow spoken word but it's when it really erupts with “ALL OUT WARRRRR” that it really sinks it's hooks into you and from that point on it's just an indulgent experience. “Last Time” comes up last but not by any means short of power, in fact I think it really allows Green to showcase what he can do with his voice on that chorus. The next ¼ is more on the side of the groovy riffs and heavy percussion that became iconic for them with the Roots album. “Capital Enslavement” is the first up, straight away the percussion is straight in there, sounding very tribal and then there comes the kick in but I just find that it lacks the same power that “Roots” had and I think that's more to do with the absence of Max Cavalera’s vocals. “Raging Void” is much more what I had in mind when they related these tracks to that era, kinda spooky, got that earthy vibe going and a stronger percussion input. The next 3 tracks are more progressive songs for Sepultura; “Guardians of Earth” has a rather long percussion and operatic intro, then it's as though the track rips you under like a riptide as chaos and really technical riffs reign supreme. “The Pentagram” does away with any intro and just allows the chaotic arrangements to continue,  however this track is purely instrumental but I will give it credit as usually I’m not a fan, this one has a lot to offer without the need for any vocals with just the way they’ve structured it. “Autem” rounds us off for the heavy progressive tracks in style, the chorus lines really let Green run away with it again which is always welcomed, the technicality in the guitar work is great, there are enough highs and lows to allow for all kinds of hell to break loose at a live show. The final 3 tracks up on the chopping block are more slow-paced and melodic. Ignoring the glorified intro that is the album's title track, “Agony of Defeat” is a good way to flex this part of their style, it's soft but angry and the orchestral and operatic elements really push it to another level. Finally album closer “Fear, Pain, Chaos, Suffering” guest stars Emmily Barreto from Brazillian rock band Far From Alaska, I’m not familiar with the band but her voice really does contrast with Green’s in a very complimentary way, it sounds like an unholy hymn.

All in all another solid release, I’d love to have seen more of that progressive stuff but with vocals because they’ve really got something with that style of writing that I think they could really run with, because I feel they’ve left that old era of the band and should now focus on their strongest styles of writing, they don’t need nostalgia anymore.
