Please consider helping me make sure I have a working phone.
[25 January 2024]
Hello, I am Nell, a Malaysian trans woman who moved away from family late last year to pursue an offer of employment.
With me getting the job, I've been more stable financially the last few months but the amount I can save per month from my wages still isn't a lot more than a drop in the bucket.
At the same time, I've owned a Samsung J6+ for several years now, and it's not been working great for a while now, including warranting a few repairs. Buttons not responding, battery not charging well, apps running slowly.
So I figure it's time for a new phone to ensure that I can continue to be available for contact from my employers and in touch with my family without worrying about my phone dying on me.
I've been eyeing something like the Honor 90 that should last me for a good few years, and I've found it for sale at a price of RM1500, or around 320 USD.
As such, I'm asking for help absorbing the costs as much as possible so I can get it by March, if at all possible.
It's not a terribly urgent need, but definitely something I want to address before the unexpected happens. I'll probably purchase the replacement phone in March even if I don't reach the full goal here, but even lightening the cost somewhat would really help me a lot.
As such, any contributions you can spare can be directed to my P*yp*l at [email protected], and even if not, simply spreading this post around will help as well.

The God of yeses.
I was checking out the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Buy 2 for Less offer last month, thinking of purchasing it as a birthday gift for myself. Nonetheless, the price is a bit steep and after much consideration, I resorted to saving the money in my ASB account instead.
Two weeks ago, I was enduring a boring and uneventful day when a marcom executive from Shangri-La Rasa Ria sent me an invite for a 2D/1N festive staycation event this weekend. I jumped at the chance and said yes! I just got the reservation confirmation yesterday and found out that we'll be staying in the Ocean Wing Junior Suite room—the exact room I was planning to book last month! In awe, I was reminded of God's kindness and grace -- the way He answers 'Yes!' to some of the most unexpected requests in life. I recall Him saying 'Yes!' to other needs and wants throughout my life: finding Stephen King's On Writing in a secluded supermarket in Tawau; which marked the beginning of my writing career, getting an RM1500+ leather jacket at a heavy discount for RM200+, getting a free flight ticket to Melbourne, surviving multiple near-death experiences, etc. I count myself really lucky and blessed. At 41, I've never spent a day admitted to a hospital, nor have I ever had to undergo surgery, a nasty divorce, or any kind of misfortune imaginable. Thank you, God, for saying 'Yes' to me again. Cheating death 1. It was early June 2015, and I was less than three months into my new role as Creative Editor at Amazing Borneo Tours. As part of my job, I had to travel to some of Sabah's popular tourist destinations to take photos and write promotional blog articles about them. That week, I was in Kundasang, visiting Kinabalu Park for a write-up with two colleagues—a tour guide and a driver. It was supposed low-season so I had the luxury of travelling on a personalised tour. Nonetheless, halfway through the Kinabalu Park tour, the minivan driver, David, started to behave a little creepy. "So, your boyfriend, is he good in bed?" he said suddenly. I was taken aback by his brazenness. We've only been introduced to each other that week. Definitely not close enough for such talk. I pretended not to hear the question and carried on with the hike. "Besar la tontolou dia? Hebat dari orang Sabah? (My ex was a Chindian from KL). I was mortified and decided to avoid him the whole tour. Later that evening after dinner, I excused myself to return to my room for the night. Again, the sleazy driver said, "Ko tidak mau bawa kami pigi bilik ko? Try kalo kami lebih hebat dari bf ko?" I was so angry that my hand trembled as I was leaving the hotel cafe.
The next morning during breakfast, I bumped into another tour guide from Amazing Borneo. He was there to bring a group of Singaporean schoolchildren on their school trip to climb Mount Kinabalu. I told him that I was uncomfortable travelling back with David and the tour guide, Roy, and asked if they were also returning to KK that afternoon so I could follow their van instead. He told me that they were staying for the night as the kids were scheduled to climb up Mount Kinabalu the next day. "Two kids have cancelled their climb," the tour guide said, "If you like, you can take that slot and climb Mount Kinabalu with them." I was ecstatic as the last time I had climbed Mount Kinabalu was in 2012. However, for some reason, my legs had felt unusually sore from the hike the day before. I told the tour guide that I had to pass up on the offer and reluctantly went back to KK with David and Roy
I woke up the next day to a violent jolt. I thought I had dreamt of a tremor and instinctively looked around to see if there were cracks in my bedroom walls to confirm if what I felt was real. It was. A quick Google search confirmed that a 6.0 magnitude earthquake had hit Sabah at 7.15am -- the first major earthquake in Sabah after 1976. Several hours later, my office WhatsApp group started lighting up with chats informing us that two of our mountain guides had died trying to bring the school kids to safety. I looked back in shock thinking of how I could've easily been among the death statistics. I am thankful for another day being alive.
Condolences to the souls who had fallen. Cheating death 2. When I booked my trip to Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley, the only thing I had really wanted to do -- besides spot a clouded leopard -- was to go river tubing. I had missed out on the opportunity the first time when I first visited BRL in 2010 on a working familiarisation trip. This time, I was there on my own time, therefore, I made sure that river tubing was on the list of activities to do before returning home the next day. On the day of the river tubing activity, I selected a rather loose and worn-out safety helmet and life jacket to wear. The sky was clear and the water seemed calm and I couldn't foresee anything terrible happening, even if I were to go without the helmet or life jacket. Nonetheless, as my rubber tube went downstream a rocky rapid, my loose safety helmet caught on a fallen tree branch and I was dragged by the strong river currents, with the helmet's strap tight around my throat. I must've been held underwater for more than a minute before I managed to undo the safety helmet's strap and broke loose. For some rare miracle, I didn't breathe through my nose while held underwater, I only swallowed a lot of water but my lungs were left intact. When I arrived at the riverbank, the other guests who went with me quickly asked if I were OK. They thought I would have drowned already while our tour guide panicked, thinking that he was surely going to get fired after that reckless incident. But I was feeling too relieved -- and grateful -- to make any sort of complaints.
I went back to my villa quietly singing praises in my heart. My throat was covered in a dark horizontal bruise for a week or so after that. When someone asked, I jokingly told them the fan broke while I was hanging myself. Jokes aside, still thankful to be alive. I am indeed like a cat with nine lives.

HA HA what a joke guess i’ll just toss myself into the ocean to save myself some expenses. This will affect EVERYTHING, even groceries. i could go grocery shopping for the bare minimum (veges, perishables for the week at least) and end up spending RM80. one trolley full of groceries could cost RM400+. And the worst part: this country’s minimum wage is RM1500. a majority of workers in this country are criminally overworked but underpaid. How exactly are people supposed to make ends meet?
I’m tired of feeling like i’m living in a god damn joke.

Please consider helping a newly-employed/housed TWOC stay ahead of expenses.
[18 September 2023]
Hello, I am Nell, a Malaysian trans woman who's landed a new job that pays decently.
That's a good thing, but these employers have also had me relocate on short notice. I've been able to find a room to rent and move into, but it wasn't exactly cheap.
The net effect of this is that I'm employed and housed, but also having needed to scrape together RM1500 or 320 USD just to cover the deposit, and I won't get my first full paycheck till the start of November.
As such, I'm asking for help to make up for my debt, as well as to accumulate enough over the next month to keep me able to eat and travel to and from work, as well as keep my room (powered by a prepaid meter) lit at night.
If you have anything at all to spare, contributions may be directed towards my P*ypal at [email protected]. And even if not, simply spreading this post around is very much appreciated.

Less = Unhappy?
And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed. - Exodus 16:18, NIV
One of the most miserable chapters in my career happened 10 years ago when I worked for a KL PR company as an associate consultant.
The stress was high and I remember feeling a wave of anxiety every Sunday, dreading what was to come on yet another working week. I submitted my resignation letter thrice that year, and each time, my then-director would talk me out of it. When my year-long contract finally ended, I was relieved, but at the same time, I was worried that I wouldn't find the same offer money-wise.
The year was 2014 and I was earning RM4,500 on an executive's salary. Everywhere I went after that, the prospective employers would tell me that they wouldn't be able to offer nearly as much. With not much savings left, I soon settled for a job that paid RM3000 -- a whooping RM1500 less than my previous job.
Needless to say, that huge salary downgrade left a bitter taste in my mouth. Furthermore, I had just moved out of my dad's house to live on my own, so bills were higher with less funds to pay them with. In my fear of not having enough, I would sometimes wish that I had held on longer or opted for a contract extension. I'd often forget about how miserable and stressed I was when I was working there.
Yet the LORD says, “During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet. - Deuteronomy 29:5, NIV
Somehow, like how it was with the Israelites in the wilderness, God made everything enough for me even when logically I should be receiving less. I made a habit of keeping a record of my monthly income, this was how much I was receiving in 2017 when my salary was only RM3500:
What I learned from that season is that your provision (rezeki) doesn't come from your monthly salary. It comes from God's grace and blessings.
There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing; And one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches. - Proverbs 13:7, NKJV
I'd often look back and wonder how was I able to be so joyful and able to get so much done in a month (I was juggling multiple projects), yet I'm merely doing one job today and already feeling so miserable and burnt out. The answer, I would relearn again and again, is in the Lord's grace.
And it's also by God's grace that I was able to find so many opportunities at all! I assure you that ironically, as I sought to 'provide for myself' and find a better-paying job, these other opportunities, too, would soon vanish. Ironically, it was when I was supposed to be earning less that I was the richest. King Solomon in Proverbs 13 was not bluffing!
Realising that I'm in the same trajectory season I was in 10 years ago, I thought to myself that I should learn to let go and let God once more. I would let go of what I think would make me happy (better salary, prestigious position, etc.) and let God lead me where I know would make me happy: serving him wholeheartedly with my talents.
I recently applied for a job which I knew would pay significantly less., and my friend who knew I was applying for this job asked me, "Are you sure? The pay is very little..."
I thought to myself, there's no price for peace. Besides, even if I would receive less than one employer, it doesn't mean God can't open up other opportunities for me to make ends meet. He's done it before and He can do it again. All I have to do is trust Him and be willing to serve.
“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ - Matthew 25:23, NIV
