Are Randy’s Anger Issues Holding Him Back?

A little rage is a good thing in wrestling. A little rage can go a long way, but a lot of rage can lead to a lot of frustration and more anger and then back to some more rage. It’s exactly this vicious cycle Randy Orton needs to escape if he’s to regain the World title

ANY SEINFELD FAN worth his piping-hot bowl of Soup Nazi-prepared mulligatawny soup should remember the episode which portly, bumbling, perennially frustrated George Costanza becomes obsessed with getting an apology from a character played by James Spader who is going through a 12-step program as part of an effort to beat alcoholism. 

George becomes so angry over the fact that seemingly everyone else but him gets an apology for being wrong by “Jason Hanky” that he seeks out the recovering drunk’s sponsor in the 12-steps program and complains vehemently to him. Rather than help him get his apology, the sponsor ends up tricking George into attending a Rage-a-Holics Anonymous meeting. 

Of course, George just keeps getting madder and madder at the meeting, all because he has to deal with so many pinheads around him.

As every scene in every episode of Seinfeld was, this was all played for laughs… and brilliantly so. George can’t see how foolish he looks.

Randy Orton seems to be headed down a path very similar to poor old George, but we don’t want to confront Randy Orton with our fun little comparison. He probably wouldn’t see the humor and might be tempted to unleash an RKO. Given his demeanor of late… well… just not a good idea. 

Then again, maybe he could use a little Seinfeld chatter, a good joke, or a Mad-Lib, a spicy limerick–something, anything that will get him to lighten up and get off this angry-at-the-world kick. Like George Costanza in that episode, he insists his anger is all the world’s fault, only it looks a lot different when you’re on the outside peering in. More and more it’s appearing that the joke is going to be on him, and everyone around him will be privately laughing if they aren’t already doing so.

These days, Orton is a little too much of a one-trick “Legend Killer.” In fact, he’s not much of a slayer of legends at all. He’s too busy getting ticked off. Furious. Angry. Enraged. Call up the synonym function on your computer along with us, because he’s going to fit all of them. 

Completely unfocused, too.

We’re not entirely sure why. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that he injured his shoulder against Triple-H last year, then sat out and rehabbed and got ready to come back, then foolishly hopped on his motorcycle and hurt himself all over again. More time out, more rehab, more time to think and stew. Damn the back luck, and even worse timing!

Just think back a few months and consider all the anger. He and C.M. Punk had virtually no history, and yet Orton unleashed all his rage and fury on the new World champion. Why? All because Punk was the World champion, Orton was still hurt, and he felt he should still have that big gold belt strapped around his waist.

It was Orton’s rage-filled attack on Punk at Unforgiven in September that took Punk out of the Raw Championship Scramble match and his chance to defend the World title. As a result, Chris Jericho slithered in and took the title. Punk has yet to regain the momentum he had at the time. 

Then there was his verbal feud with then-Raw General Manager Mike Adamle. Somehow���and so quickly–it got to the point at which Orton gave Shane McMahon an ultimatum: One of them had to go (Adamle resigned). Heck, Orton got Adamle so angry at one point that he slapped Orton! Again, it seemed like it all stemmed from Orton believing he deserved to have someone in power simply take the World title belt and hand it over to him just, um, because. 

Now, as he battles Batista and they revisit their old post-Evolution feud of four years ago, Orton must also deal with the growing hostility between him and his very unofficial backup group, that of Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase Jr., and Manu. BiBiase foolishly tried to help him in a recent match with Punk in which Orton didn’t seem to need much aid, and Orton didn’t appreciate it. 

But was it wise to react with such rage and violence against DiBiase et al.? Does he need a little side feud with those three? There’s a nasty little no-win situation for him.

We could understand his frustration there, but what’s the point? Presumably those three really did intend to help, as an alliance with Orton only serves to give them a boost. Now we get angry nose-to-nose confrontation after angry nose-to-nose confrontation. 

“I don’t know what his deal really is,” said Punk (Quite calmly, we might add). “It wasn’t that long ago that he had this kind of cool confidence about him. Now it’s like he’s ready to explode at any time. Maybe he thinks this way works for him, maybe he’s trying to be all ‘Stone-Cold’ Steve Austin from 1998 about this, but I'm not really getting it. Not at all.”

Once upon a time, Orton had a real sense of humor. Remember when he first started having shoulder issues? This was shortly after he debuted on WWE TV, and he’d give tongue-in-cheek updates on his status and proposed return date every Monday night. He gave it a go as a fan favorite after he was Batista bombed out of Evolution, even gave us a little humor when he brought his father, Bob Jr., on board during a feud with The Undertaker. Then he got a little obsessive with his legacy and superiority over the rest of the Raw brand when he took advantage of John Cena’s injury to steal the WWE title a year ago. He even had a really nice seven-month run with the belt. 

Orton isn’t treading through a crisis looking for the right persona like so many have over the years. He isn’t trying out different nicknames and looks. He’s just searching for the right approach. If he weren’t so apt to attack him, too, maybe a much-needed heart-to-heart with his old pal and mentor Triple-H would help him (see sidebar).

There were undoubtedly some rage and temper issues with which Orton had to deal in years past, and they were all too real. He was suspended for 60 days for unprofessional conduct shortly after WrestleMania 21 in 2005, and stories of his behavior on various WWE tours weren’t hard to come by. Some of these stories were likely exaggerated. Now, as he has reportedly settled into a quieter life as a husband and father away from the spotlight, the anger becomes an issue inside the ropes. 

[“Let fury have the hour. Anger can be power!” goes an old punk song. But for Orton, the need to completely destroy opponents–as he did to Jeff Hardy–may just get in the way of winning another WWE World title.]

“I think he’s playing right into the hands of someone like Batista right now,” offered John Cena. “It’s funny to me that Batista is the calm one for the most part in that feud. And what do they call him? ‘The Animal,’ right? Pretty ironic, don’t you think?”

And pretty upsetting to Orton that Cena squeezed ahead of him in line and won the World title despite having been out of sight and out of mind with an injury for several months. Batista is in a better spot, too, it seems. Maybe even Shawn Michaels and JBL. Chris Jericho is clearly the much hotter heel.

As we’ve pointed out, we understand Orton’s frustration. We understand because we’ve taken the time to step back and look at the entire situation. He needs to do the same. If he does that, he’ll figure out that he’s the source of much of his own frustration. Then maybe he’ll do something productive to change that.

Randy Orton Launches a Surprise Attack on Jeff Hardy in the lead-up to WWE 'Backlash'

While Jeff Hardy may have defended his United States Championship from Jinder Mahal during The Greatest Royal Rumble last week, “The Charismatic Enigma” has a new challenger to contend with this Sunday at Backlash: Randy Orton.

The rumblings of a feud started a few weeks ago on SmackDown Live, when Hardy interrupted Orton while he was walking to the ring and took his spot in a match against Shelton Benjamin. The next week, Orton returned the favor by interrupting Hardy's entrance.

During the “MizTV” segment of this week's SmackDown, The Miz tried to goad Hardy and Orton into a conflict by confronting them about their respective behavior. Surprisingly, both Orton and Hardy insisted there was no bad blood between the two, despite Miz's constant badgering.

  Later in the night, Hardy and Orton teamed up to take on Miz and Benjamin in a tag-team match. For most of the match, Hardy and Orton worked in sync, and it appeared that their statements on “MizTV” were legitimate.

  However, Hardy learned the hard way that you can't trust “The Viper.” Right after Hardy pinned Benjamin for the win, Orton shocked the crowd by nailing Hardy with his patented RKO “out of nowhere.”

Will Hardy be able to protect his title for the second time in as many weeks, or did Orton's tricks give him the mental advantage? We'll find out on Sunday.

JUST SAYIN’ - AJ STYLES v. RANDY ORTON

I’m writing this strictly from the perspective of a long-time pro wrestling fan. Amazing! AJ Styles has been a level that rivals 1990s-era Shawn Michaels; everything he does in the ring is fluid and looks impressive. His match against Randy Orton for the opportunity to face Bray Wyatt for the WWE World Championship at WresleMania exceeded my expectation. My only complaint is that this match was not given more promotion beforehand.

Randy Orton and AJ Styles click, in the ring; everything seemed to look impressive, they even made a side headlock like a significant hold. I can't think of too many wrestlers who could get away with that without being blasted for the use of "boring, rest holds". For me, the segment where Styles faked a springboard; tricking Orton into a premature RKO was cool. The 450 splash that followed was great.

I like the fact that no one interfered in the match and Orton won without any controversy. Now, would I rather have seen Styles win? Absolutely, but considering last week's Orton/Wyatt betrayal, it only makes sense that Orton gets the win.

Bevor die eigentliche Hauptshow Battleground startete, begegneten sich die Teams Breezango und Usos in der KickOff Show. Tyler Breeze und Fandango besiegten die Brüder mit einem plötzlichen Einroller. Die Hauptshow in Washington D.C. begann mit dem Women's Tag Team Match zwischen Charlotte mit Dana Brooke und Sasha Banks mit ihrer Überraschungs- Partnerin Bayley, dem Puplikumsliebling von NXT. Als Auftaktmatch super, spannend, ausgeglichen und trotz typischer Tricks von Charlotte und Dana, errang Sasha Banks den Sieg mit dem Bank Statement. Im nächsten Match standen sich die Wyatt Family und The New Day im Ring gegenüber. New Day hielten sich wacker, zeigten tolle Aktionen, mussten sich allerdings nach dem Sister Abigail gegen Xavier Woods geschlagen geben. Zeit für das erste Titelmatch der Nacht. Rusev setzte den United States Championship gegen Zack Ryder aufs Spiel. Lana brillierte optisch als Begleitung ihres Verlobten und stahl den Männern die Show. Am Ende verteidigte Rusev mit dem Accolade seinen Titel. Nach dem Sieg wollte Rusev weiter angreifen, doch Ryders ehemaliger NXT- Partner Mojo Rawley kam überraschend zum Save. Die ehemals besten Freunde und inzwischen erbitterte Rivalen, Sami Zayn und Kevin Owens bezogen anschließend das Schlachtfeld. Das bisher technisch hochwertigste, spannenste Match, für mich sogar absoluter Slammy- Anwärter, konnte schließlich Sami Zayn für sich entscheiden. Grandiose Vorstellung! Fast ebenso verbissen war das folgende Match zwischen Natalya und Becky Lynch. Mit harten und neuen Aufgabegriffen puntete Natalya und dominierte Becky bis zur Aufgabe im Sharp Shooter. Um den Intercontinental Championship ging es zwischen The Miz und dem Herausforderer Darren Young. Darren schien gute Chancen zu haben, doch dann wollte Miz gehen, Bob Backlund trieb ihn in den Ring zurück, fing sich dann eine Ohrfeige von Maryse ein. Als das Match dadurch unübersichtlich wurde und sich nach draußen verlagerte, brach der Ringrichter das Match ab. Mit einer beeindruckenden Rede im Ring brachte Enzo Amore als nächstes die Halle so richtig zum kochen. Mit Big Cass und John Cena trat er dann gegen The Club in den Ring. Mit ebenso viel Power ging es durch das ganze Match. Mit taktisch klugen Aktionen und einem AA vom obersten Ringseil gegen AJ Styles, errang das Team um John Cena eindrucksvoll den Sieg. In seinem Highlight Reel begrüßte Chris Jericho die Viper Randy Orton zurück in die WWE. Nach 9 Monaten Verletzungspause, bekam er Tipps für sein Match gegen Brock Lesnar beim Summerslam, sowie zahllose Provokationen. Schließlich zeigte Orton einen plötzlichen RKO gegen Y2J und feierte mit den Fans. Im Main Event ging es nun um den WWE Championship im langersehnten Triple Threat Match der ehemaligen Shield Mitglieder Reigns, Rollins und Ambrose. Die Commissioner und General Manager von Raw und Smackdown verfolgen das Geschehen direkt am Ring. Dieses Match muss man gesehen haben. Pausenlos ging es hin und her, oft so schnell, dass die Kommentatoren gar nicht hinterher kamen. Am Ende dieser grandiosen Show stand der Sieger Dean Ambrose nach seiner Titelverteidigung, gemeinsam mit seinem Smackdown Roster im Ring und ließ sich feiern. -arae-

Already confirmed to be there are the likes of Snoop Dogg, Raven Symone, Kim Kardashian, and R&B singer John Legend. While these celebrities will certainly bring extra star power to the event, it will be all about the competition in the ring. Three big matches will headline the 2008 Wrestlemania and are already full of rumors and speculation over who will win. The World Heavyweight title has always been heavily contested and the belt currently is around the waist of WWE Superstar Edge. Edge from WWE's Smackdown brand won the belt after using all sorts of tricks during a triple threat Pay Per View match against the Undertaker and Batista. Batista was the champ at the time, but Edge used a chair to knock out Undertake for a pin. Now heading into Wrestlemania 24, Undertaker has won an Elimination Chamber match of 6 men. His prize will be an attempt at Edge's World Heavyweight title. The interesting facts here are that Undertaker is an impressive 15-0 at Wrestlemania, never losing a match, and that Edge has never been defeated by the Undertaker. Something's got to give for this one with the title on the line. What we learned from Royal Rumble 2017

The Royal Rumble was awesome from start to finish, and this is what it taught us.

The Royal Rumble has been a point of contention for WWE fans the past few years, but not this time! In 2017, we got a great Rumble, from start to finish, and a Rumble match that included surprises, comedy, violence, and beef. So. Much. Beef.

Let’s dive right in and find out what we learned from the 2017 Royal Rumble. We’ll go through the kickoff matches a little faster than the main card.

Kickoff Match: Naomi, Nikki Bella, and Becky Lynch defeat Natalya, Alexa Bliss, and Mickie James

What we learned: While this match didn’t get a ton of time despite a two-hour pre-show, it did its job of helping further solidify the direction SmackDown’s women’s division is heading in for the next brand-specific pay-per-view, Elimination Chamber. Naomi pinning Alexa Bliss in a tag match with a whole bunch of moving parts allows her to claim she’s deserving of a title shot without Bliss having been pinned in a singles match against Naomi, aka the worst possible setup for a championship match.

Kickoff Match: Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows defeat Sheamus and Cesaro to become the new RAW Tag Team Champions

What we learned: This was a shocker! Not just that Anderson and Gallows won, but that we got a finish at all considering the match stipulation had two refs, seemingly so they could argue over who the winner was. We might still get that on Monday’s episode of RAW, since Sheamus kicked one ref in the face, leading to his team’s defeat, but as of now, they dropped the belts to The Club.

Kickoff Match: Nia Jax defeats Sasha Banks

What we learned: If Sasha Banks is going to rise up and defeat Nia Jax, it’s not happening while she’s dealing with a (story line) leg injury. Sasha got some hits in, but Nia shrugged everything off and dominated most of the match. When these two get an extended period of time to show what they can do, it could be special, but we’re not at that part of the story just yet.

Charlotte Flair defends RAW Women’s Championship against Bayley

The official Royal Rumble card opened with Charlotte defending her RAW Women’s title and her undefeated streak on pay-per-view against Bayley. Charlotte had spent weeks basically calling Bayley a nerd who was no better than the other nerds in the audience, and Bayley has been trying to tell her that actually, being a nerd is good and is also the source of her power. She might need to figure out a way to enhance that power next time out, because Charlotte retained without having to play any dirty Flair tricks.

What we learned: Charlotte vs. Bayley isn’t going to be over, even if Bayley did lose this time. Charlotte is going to have to defend against somebody at WrestleMania 33, because as much as she’s a self-obsessed glory hound looking out for number one at all times, she also won’t want to avoid a chance to shine in the spotlight of the year. Bayley might have to work her way back up to a title match, but with Fastlane in March and a couple of months total in between now and Mania, she has time to prove that she has something to offer, even if she wasn’t born into this life like Charlotte was.

Kevin Owens defends WWE Universal Championship against Roman Reigns even though Chris Jericho was suspended above the ring in a shark cage

This match, people. This match. RAW has beat the whole Owens/Reigns/Jericho/Rollins thing to death and then into an unrecognizable paste for months now, but this match made all of that torture worth it. Owens and Reigns told a story of two guys who refused to quit, who both looked like badasses capable of taking out as much pain as they could dish out, and then put a Braun Strowman-sized bow on the whole thing to help Owens retain and set Reigns on a different path.

What we learned: Reigns continues to be a godsend in big WWE matches that don’t also involve Triple H, and if you can get him in a situation where weapons are legal, you are guaranteed a more-than-acceptable level of entertainment. The fact WWE let him look like a superhero without it being at the expense of Owens or his title also helps, and Braun Strowman looked like a terrifying, unstoppable force by taking Reigns down.

It’s unclear what Owens is going to do next, but it won’t be with Reigns. This sendoff of their feud is much better than the build deserved, but sometimes, the destination can make up for the journey.

Neville defeats Rich Swann to win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship

This match wasn’t what it could have been, which is disappointing. What it was, though, was Neville asserting his superiority over the champion of the division that Neville has claimed he’s king of. Swann wasn’t able to stop him, and Neville might be more violent tyrant than benevolent ruler, but you try telling Neville that’s a bad thing and see how your body feels when you wake up from him choking you out.

What we learned: Rich Swann was the class of the cruiserweights until an angry Neville showed up ready to hurt people. If Swann can’t stop Neville, is there anyone in the current cruiserweight division who can? Th reign of the King of the Cruiserweights might end up being a long one, but that’s okay: Neville is dope, even if he’s kind of evil right now.

John Cena defeats AJ Styles for a record 16th WWE World Championship

Last week, I ranked all 15 of John Cena’s previous WWE title victories. There are a few clunkers in there, but most of them are at least good, and a few of them are, without qualification, great. Typically, though, Cena’s greatest matches tend to be ones he’s lost, or from that time period where he made the United States Championship legitimate again by putting on incredible title defenses week after week in his open challenge.

Now, though, Cena finally has a WWE World Championship win that is a legitimate match of the year candidate, and that’s not just because it happened in January: this thing is going to hold up throughout 2017. It’s fitting that this is the one that ties him with the man many consider to be the greatest of all-time, Ric Flair.

What we learned: Learned? Probably not much, really. We knew Cena and Styles were capable of this. We’ve seen lesser — but still awesome — versions of it from them before. This is the top match between two veterans who are still at the peak of their powers despite being much closer to 40 than even their mid-30s, the kind of bout that makes you think these two were meant to wrestle each other forever.

Cena will be the one holding the championship when it’s defended at Elimination Chamber in February. Whether he’s still got it after that six-man affair is over is another story, but he’s now got 16 WWE World titles behind him, and all it will take is one more before he has more than anyone in history.

Randy Orton wins the 30-man Royal Rumble match

So much to love here. Sure, there was a lack of surprise entrants and no old wrestlers joining the match besides the ones we already knew about, but that barely matters. This was brilliantly booked from start to finish, with even the downtime in the middle existing there for an express purpose that worked out as effectively as it was written up.

Braun Strowman coming in and wrecking house was a massive highlight, and not just because the dude is huge. Baron Corbin eventually getting in and, with the help of one of Strowman’s rivals, Sami Zayn, eliminated Strowman, making Corbin look awesome in the process. Brock Lesnar came in and destroyed everyone in the ring, but then Goldberg entered and again made short work of Brock. Undertaker then eventually got rid of Goldberg, and was defeated in a similar fashion by Roman Reigns, who had the stare down to end all stare downs afterward in a moment that has me dying to see them face each other at WrestleMania.

Please, please let this happen. It would give the crowd a reason to boo Reigns, and when he’s this version of Reigns who doesn’t give a single thought to what the crowd thinks, the Reigns who has a harder edge around him and starts showing off his darker side without fully succumbing, he’s the best version of himself.

What we learned: Randy Orton ended up dumping Reigns out and winning following an RKO that hit Reigns before he could land a Superman punch. Orton as a Rumble winner in 2017 might seem odd, but with the brand split meaning two huge title matches are on the WrestleMania card along with two women’s championships, Goldberg vs. Lesnar likely a thing, an Undertaker match, and John Cena rumored to have a huge battle at Mania whether he has a championship to defend or not, well, you can have Orton win here without anyone being furious. Especially since they had Orton eliminate Reigns, who the Rumble crowd was dying to see defeated.

And, if the rumors are true about who Orton’s opponent might be, then someone new is still going to be in the WWE World Championship title picture at Mania, anyway. Hey, it’s just a rumor, but if you want to go down that rabbit hole, you know where to click.

Seriously, though, don’t give us Orton vs. Cena again. Leave that back in 2013 where it belongs.

Batista was the champ at the time, but Edge used a chair to knock out Undertake for a pin. Now heading into Wrestlemania 24, Undertaker has won an Elimination Chamber match of 6 men. The interesting facts here are that Undertaker is an impressive 15-0 at Wrestlemania, never losing a match, and that Edge has never been defeated by the Undertaker. Something's got to give for this one with the title on the line. On the WWE Raw side of things is the WWE title, currently held by superstar Randy Orton. Triple H won a brutal Elimination Chamber match against 5 other men to earn a shot at the WWE title. However, John Cena also won the 2008 Royal Rumble, giving him a shot at the WWE title. The obvious smart plan was to put John Cena, Triple H and Randy Orton into a Triple Threat match at Wrestlemania 24. One of these 3 men will take the glory of the WWE title on the grandest stage of them all. Finally, there is a Wrestlemania 24 match which is considered a "David vs. Goliath" sort of contest. It features the returning wrestling star, the Big Show who is over 7 feet tall. His competition comes from outside the wrestling ranks, as boxer Floyd "Money" Mayweather enters the wrestling ring. The 39-0 boxer chose to throw some punches at Big Show during a previous WWE Pay Per View. During the altercation, Mayweather broke Big Show's nose, leaving the huge superstar bloody and angry. On the following night, Big Show taunted Mayweather again after it seemed Show wanted to apologize. Big Show called out the boxer, who has now vowed to "break Big Show's jaw". Now Mayweather will play David to Big Show's Goliath when they compete. The rumored payout for Mayweather taking the WWE match is $20 million. Many fans and sports analysts question if the money is worth being decimated by such a huge opponent. So now the grandest stage of them all is set for the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. These three matches will definitely keep fans wondering who will achieve the glory of WWE victories and gold as Wrestlemania 24 arrives on March 30, 2008 to entertain fans around the world.
