mourning - reader x cassian. Cassian comforts reader after losing a team together.
"We cant leave them behind." You struggled in his grasp, trying to free yourself of his massive arms. The jungle below wailed with the terror of twelve trapped Illyrians. An Illyrian never screamed like that unless dying. He pulled harder against your fighting. "We need to. We will come back." Cassian grunted, pulling you further and further away from the prisoners in the cave below. His powerful wings outweighed yours. You didnt stand a chance when he was actually fighting. You let yourself be hauled away by him, never forgetting the sounds of those that would never return. The Island of the Damned always managed to get its souls back somehow. Cassian had just saved you from being another one of them. + You glared out over the ocean years later, remembering the day. Remembering how you didnt fight harder to get them back. Remembering the devastated families you had to tell of their passing. Cassian didn't startle you when he landed. He just sighed and sat beside you in silence for a while. Hearing the waves crash over the sharpened rock below wasn't a comfort. Not on the anniversary of losing so many soldiers. Yours and Cassian's only loss besides battle ever. He noted the sunken in bags under your eyes, your curved cheekbones. Your yearly self punishment. He hated it. Absolutely despised that you did this on the anniversary. He recalled his past attempts at getting you away from the cliffside. Temptations of food, of fights, of music, and downright yelling at you had never worked. Trying to send Rhys or Az was out of the question, knowing you would murder him on the spot if he did such a thing. So he waited beside you, enjoying the sun and breeze. He stretched his wings out behind him, sunning them. Letting them enjoy the breeze the sea air brought. He sighed and started humming something you faintly recognized. You scowled and tried to ignore his ease. "You're being disrespectful." You muttered. You wondered if he even heard you. He huffed a scoff - "You're disrespecting them by sulking." He retaliated. Heat of anger burned in your stomach. The words that lingered on your tongue aching to lash out at him. You held back. "Our team would want you to be drinking in their honor. Killing your way through that Island and rejoicing in it." "They would want to be alive right now, Cassian." You said with cold calm that made your voice low. He didnt miss a beat before saying "A warrior's death for each one of them. I'm sure their ancestors are proud." unlike him, you had a hard time shaking off death. He was the one that had taken you away from saving them. The anger reached up in your throat, hot and firey. "You are just like the rest of the Illyrians, you know?" You shot to your feet before you could hold back the words. To hold back the fury that molded your core. "No sympathy, no understanding. I dont know why I bother." You unfurled your wings and readied to fly away. To a quieter space without him there. The hurt in his eyes shone for only a second before he was up as well, ready to fly. "I sympathize for the living. For their families. For you and your hurt over them." He said tightly, his face slightly red with emotion. Your anger simmered away the instant you saw the emotion on his face. Not the cocky Illyrian, but your friend. "I see that hurt, and I'm trying something new to get you to quit mourning over them every year." He said, softer now. You stared him down, looking into those dark eyes filled with concern. Then you let out the breath you'd been holding. You sighed and relaxed your wings. The ocean hissed below, casting a mist upward at you. "You have a warrior's heart. I forget sometimes." You nodded, trying to hold back the stinging tears. He wrapped you in a hug, warm and tight. You both ignored the wet patches on his tunic after you pulled away, nose and eyes red. "Come on, bet you can't beat me to Ritas." He shoved you lightly before taking off. You hesitated before leaving, going to look over the cliffside that hosted you for the entire day. The bubbling seafoam below looked as soft as clouds. You unfurled your wings, rooting yourself in place against the sea wind. "Come on, I bet Mor's already waiting." He called from above. You smiled slightly, unfurled your wings, then leapt.
