Westjet RBC Mastercard Review
Although I personally prefer the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, it comes with a minimum income requirement of $80,000 or a household income of $150,000.  Because of this income requirement, not everyone will be approved for the card but that doesn’t mean you can’t earn WestJet dollars and get a companion voucher. The WestJet RBC Mastercard has a much lower income requirement and still comes packed with benefits.
Although the WestJet RBC Mastercard comes with fewer benefits compared to the World Elite version, there are still enough features to make this card worthwhile for both frequent and casual flyers of WestJet. Read my WestJet RBC Mastercard review now for my full thoughts.
Tumblr media
Westjet RBC Mastercard Benefits
$39 annual fee
$50 WestJet dollars sign up bonus after your first purchase
$50 Additional WestJet dollars when you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months of cardmembership (Until June 30, 2021)
Receive an annual round-trip companion voucher within Canada for $199 plus taxes, fees, and charges
Earn 1.5% back in WestJet dollars on WestJet flights or WestJet Vacations packages
Earn 1% back in WestJet dollars on everyday purchases
Save 3¢/L on fuel and always earn 20% more Petro-Points when you link your WestJet RBC MasterCard
Travel accident insurance
Auto rental collision/loss damage insurance
Hotel/motel burglary insurance
Purchase security and extended warranty insurance
Right off the top, you’re given $50 WestJet dollars after your purchase which easily offsets the $39 fee. You can earn an additional $50 if you meet the minimum spend requirement. Again, it’s not as high as what the Worle Elite version offers, but getting a welcome bonus of $50 is pretty solid for a credit card that has a low annual fee.
Another benefit people love is the annual round-trip companion voucher within Canada and the continental U.S. for $199 plus taxes, fees, and charges. To be clear, the companion voucher that comes with the WestJet RBC Mastercard is different from the voucher that comes with the World Elite version which starts at $119. The regular companion voucher can only be used for flights within Canada and the continental U.S. that are operated by WestJet,
The 1.5% back in WestJet dollars on WestJet flights or WestJet Vacations packages is great if you fly WestJet often, while the 1% back in WestJet dollars on all other purchases is typical for a co-branded credit card. This isn’t the best earn rate, but I think it’s decent considering the low annual fee.

How Westjet Rewards Works
WestJet Rewards is easily one of the best travel rewards programs in Canada. You could even argue it’s one of the best airline loyalty programs in the world. What makes it interesting is that it’s basically a cash back program.  There’s no need to worry about seat availability or blackout dates, you’re able to use your WestJet dollars whenever you want as long as you have a minimum of $15 WestJet dollars in your account.
A lot of people also live WestJet Rewards because of the benefits you get and how easy it is to earn tier status. WestJet Rewards has four tiers: teal, silver, gold and platinum. You get higher tier status based on how much you spend on qualifying WestJet flights and vacations (this does not apply to credit card spending). As your tier goes up, you get additional benefits.
What many people don’t realize is that the cash back you earn on your WestJet RBC Mastercard stacks with your tier status. Let’s say your teal status, you would earn 0.5% back on WestJet flights. If you paid with your WestJet RBC Mastercard, you’d earn an additional 1.5% for a total of 2% back in WestJet dollars. That’s a pretty good deal so you can see how quickly your rewards would add up.
The other benefits you get with increased status include the following:
Free checked bags
Advanced seat selection
Airport lounge access
Priority boarding
Priority check-in
Seat upgrades
How the Westjet RBC Mastercard Compares to Others
It’s difficult to compare the WestJet RBC Mastercard to others since it’s pretty specific. As mentioned, there’s the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard that comes with more benefits but has a higher income requirement. If you’re reading this review, then you likely don’t qualify for that card.
Ideally, I could compare the WestJet RBC Mastercard to one of TD’s Aeroplan cards, but the TD cards all have annual fees of $89 or higher so it’s not a fair comparison. For reference, you could look at my guide on the best airline credit cards, but that mainly features premium cards.
I suppose you could compare it to the Scotiabank Rewards Visa Card which has no annual fee but you’ll earn just 1 Scotia Rewards point for every $1 spent. Although you can use Scotia Rewards to claim any type of travel expenses, your earn rate is essentially 50% lower than the WestJet RBC Mastercard. Heck, on WestJet flights, you’re actually earning 66% less in points, so going with the Scotiabank card instead is likely a mistake.
One other credit card worth mentioning is the Tangerine-Money Back Card. It’s a no fee credit card that will earn you 2% cash back in up to three categories. All other purchases give you 0.5% cash back. If you saved all that cash back and put it towards your flights, that could potentially be a good deal but you would have to be pretty disciplined to do that.

RBC Business Cash Back MasterCard Review
No Fee 1% Cash Back Card
First Published Date: February 5, 2017
If you are a small business owner and looking for a no-frills credit card, look no further than the RBC Business Cash Back MasterCard. This card may not provide a lot of benefits, but it’s still good for those who aren’t looking for anything from a plain vanilla business credit card.
Sometimes you just want to have a business credit card to keep an active credit card under your business name. And that’s exactly why I have this credit card, although I don’t really use it. For a No Annual Fee credit card, the RBC Business Cash Back MasterCard offers the following features:
– Promotional 2 percent cash back for the first three months
– 1 percent cash back across the board thereafter
– Get cash back whenever you accumulate $25 or once a year in January
– Purchase security guarantee for 90 days
– Extended warranty for one additional year
As you can see, it’s not really a feature-rich credit card, but for no fee getting 1 percent back on everything is not bad either.
Business owners may need to separate their business transactions on credit cards, hence the need for a separate credit card solely for business. I charge my all business transactions on my regular personal credit cards that offer rich rewards and still keep a couple of no-fee business credit card accounts active for my business credit file.
If you are looking for better rewards on your business transactions, there are other annual fee credit cards you can go for. But for those who are not willing to pay annual fee, the RBC Business Cash Back MasterCard does the job and still provides 1 percent return.

How to Be a Travel Hacker in Canada
Tumblr media
Posted: 4/2/2020 | April 2nd, 2020
Travel hacking is one of the best ways to lower your travel costs. Flights, accommodation represent two of the biggest expenses travelers face so getting those to zero allows you to travel more for less. When money isn’t a worry, the world is your oyster.
While I have tons of travel hacking resources on this website for U.S. travelers, I get a lot of questions from Canadians about whether they can take advantage of travel hacking too. And the answer is always yes!
While the U.S. has the most deals and opportunities, Canada isn’t too far behind and is the second biggest points market in the world.
To help you understand the Canadian travel hacking world, I reached out to my friend and fellow travel blogger Ricky Zhang from Prince of Travel. In this interview, he shares his tips and tricks.
Nomadic Matt: Hey Ricky! Thanks for doing this! To begin, tell us about yourself. Ricky: I’m based out of Montreal and Toronto, and I’ve always loved to travel and get the best bang for my buck when doing so. For the past few years, I’ve run the Prince of Travel website, which is dedicated to helping my fellow Canadians maximize their frequent flyer miles and credit card points to travel the world at a fraction of the price.
How did you get into travel hacking? I first became interested in points and loyalty programs back in 2013. As a university student in Canada, I was making frequent trips back home to China to visit my family and I was trying to figure out how I could get airport lounge access.
It turns out that there was a little-known opportunity to earn top-tier Star Alliance Gold status very easily with the loyalty program of Aegean Airlines, the Greek national airline. I figured out that I could simply credit the miles from one or two of my round-trip flights to Aegean and I’d end up with Star Alliance Gold, which would get me the lounge access I wanted.
That led me to the online blogs and forums, where I quickly learned that credit card points — and specifically the signup bonuses — was the key to racking up the points and funding many trips around the world (often in business class or First Class) at a fraction of the price.
From there, I was hooked and I’ve just continued honing my craft over the years!
Tumblr media
The U.S. is known for its awesome travel credit cards. How does Canada compare? Many outside observers would probably guess that the Canadian travel credit card market is less lucrative than the US and, while that’s true in some ways, there are also ways in which Canada is the more favorable place to be.
The US has a wider range of travel credit cards, provides access to a greater number of airline and hotel programs, and also gives consumers larger quantities of signup bonuses (for example, 100,000-point bonuses are a regular occurrence whereas, in Canada, the single-highest signup bonus is 75,000 points).
However, the US credit card issuers are also stricter about limiting the number of signup bonuses that a single individual can obtain (or imposing limits on how often you can obtain them), whereas the Canadian issuers haven’t imposed such limits, making Canada much more favorable in terms of earning the signup bonuses repeatedly.
Almost all the cards in Canada let you double- or triple-dip on the bonus (although the terms and conditions may not always say so). It’s easy for issuers to update their terms and conditions to say that you’re only eligible for a once-in-a-lifetime bonus, but much more challenging for them to actually enforce that from an IT perspective.
In addition, there are ways for Canadians to apply for US credit cards as well, thus letting us play the game on both sides of the border!
Really? How can Canadians get a U.S. travel credit card? Well, to do that, you need three things:
A US address
A US bank account
A social security number (or something equivalent)
The address is easy. Just use a friend or family member’s address, or a mail-forwarding service. The bank account is also easy. Just use the cross-border banking service of your favorite Canadian bank to set up a US domiciled bank account with your US address listed on it.
The social security number part is tricky. You can’t just get one unless you actually study or work in the US. Instead, you can get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), which is an equivalent number that many issuers also accept in place of an SSN.
Any foreign resident can get apply for an ITIN from the IRS if they show that they’ve earned income in the US (for example, if you’ve earned $5 gambling in Vegas) but need to be exempt from withholding taxes on that income as a foreign resident. Once you have your ITIN, you can use that in place of the SSN on US credit card applications – and voilà!
Tumblr media
What are some of the best credit cards in Canada right now? The single-highest signup bonus one can obtain in Canada is the American Express Business Platinum Card, which gives you 75,000 Membership Rewards points upon spending $7,000 (CAD) in the first three months.
This card is also very valuable for its referral bonus of 25,000 Membership Rewards points, which you earn simply for referring a friend or family member to a card of their own, and can add up very quickly after just a handful of referrals. Then you’ve also got the unlimited Priority Pass lounge access and the Marriott Gold Elite status perks as well.
However, the Business Platinum does come with an annual fee of $499. For those who are more interested in First Year Free offers to minimize their out-of-pocket cost, I’d recommend the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite, which is offering 30,000 Aeroplan miles + First Year Free.
Moreover, RBC Avion points can be very valuable due to how flexible they are, so in that regard the RBC Visa Infinite Avion is another great card to pick up, offering 15,000 Avion points at signup.
In most cases, you don’t need to be a small business owner in the traditional sense to get a business card. Instead, you apply as a “sole proprietor”, which is a form of doing business in which you operate under your own name. Just enter your own name as the business name and apply, and most issuers are happy with it.
And what about debit cards? When it comes to avoiding ATM fees abroad? The frontrunner in this regard is the Stack Prepaid MasterCard, which does not impose any foreign transaction fees on foreign ATM withdrawals. Stack is free to apply for and to load funds, and only charges you the fair currency exchange rate when you withdraw money at a foreign ATM (although the local ATM fee may still be charged). It’s my go-to method for withdrawing cash while I’m traveling.
Are there any ways to manufacture spending in Canada to earn more points? At any given moment, there are always a handful of manufactured spending methods floating around in Canada, although they tend not to be discussed publicly out of a fear that they might end if they were too widely circulated.
The best way to learn about manufactured spending methods would be to attend in-person events with fellow Miles & Points enthusiasts. I host one or two of these events every year and there are always other informal meets going on in every Canadian city as well.
What tips do you have for new travel hackers in Canada? There’s always a ton of reading and scouring online blogs and forums at the start of the learning curve, but the best way to actually get started would be to think about one or two places you’d like to go over the next year (which places, what time of year, how many passengers, what class of service, etc.), then research specifically the best ways to make that trip happen using points, and then put together a strategy for earning those points using credit card signup bonuses.
Having this strategy in place will allow you to learn the ropes and reap rewards much faster than if you simply opened credit cards left, right, and center without a clear goal in mind.
Besides that, try to make it out to an in-person event or meetup at some point so that you can get to know other members of the community — that’ll accelerate your learning process by leaps and bounds. You can learn about them from some of the following groups/websites:
Prince of Travel Elites
PointsNerd.ca
FlyerTalk
RedFlagDeals
Churning Canada (Reddit)
I try to host in-person events for Prince of Travel readers about twice a year, and I’m also looking to host a larger-scale PointsCon event sometime later this year, so stay tuned for details on that one.
Otherwise, the Prince of Travel Elites community regularly hosts small informal gatherings, which are known as “Miles & Pints”, in cities all across Canada, so make sure to join the group and keep an eye out for the next event in your area!
Where can people find you online/on social media to learn more? I can be found sharing Miles & Points knowledge, industry news and analysis, travel tips, and reviews from my own trips every day at princeoftravel.com and sharing weekly videos on my YouTube channel. Also follow me on Instagram, where I post the highlights from my travels, and get to know the rest of the community on my Prince of Travel Elites group on Facebook!
Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks
Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner or Momondo. They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.
Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the largest inventory. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. I use them all the time.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. I’ve been using World Nomads for ten years. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:
World Nomads (for everyone below 70)
Insure My Trip (for those over 70)
Looking for the best companies to save money with? Check out my resource page for the best companies to use when you travel! I list all the ones I use to save money when I travel – and that will save you time and money too!

Facebook’s GlobalCoin May Be A ‘Historic Initiative,’ Say RBC Analysts
Tumblr media
Facebook’s “crypto opportunity” comes with high expectations.
“We believe this may prove to be one of the most important initiatives in the history of the company to unlock new engagement and revenue streams,” RBC Capital Markets’ Mark Mahaney and Zachary Schwartzman said in a note on Thursday.
The two experts expect the currency to be used for payments, commerce, applications and gaming — across Facebook’s ecosystem that includes image-based social media platform Instagram and encrypted messaging service WhatsApp.
Mahaney and Schwartzman also repeated previously reported expectations that Facebook will release their currency’s white paper on June 18, following in Satoshi’s footsteps to explain the fundamental protocols that will underpin Libra, the internal codename for the project.
RBC said it plans to offer an analysis of the paper when it’s released, “to help investors analyze the underlying cryptoeconomics of the token.”
The currency is rumored to be a stablecoin backed by a number of global fiat currencies.
It has been in development for more than six months — though the company indicated it has contemplated enveloping cryptocurrency into the social network as far back as the end of 2017 — and has 100 staff working on its development. This includes two former compliance managers that migrated from Coinbase in May.
Facebook allegedly will offer employees the option to take their salary in the new currency. It has not been confirmed if the $514 billion company will offer incentive packages in GlobalCoin.
“More people will turn to bitcoin for one simple reason—bitcoin is scarce, while Facebook’s cryptocurrency is not. People will migrate over time to the most honest ledger for storing their hard-earned wealth—and that’s not fiat currencies or derivatives thereof, including Facebook’s cryptocurrency,” wrote Caitlin Long of the Wyoming Blockchain Task Force.
Now everyone is as excited about the product. Crypto-notable Charlie Shrem said:
I’m just gonna say it.
I think the “FacebookCoin” is an attempt by big tech, banks and credit card companies to lure people away from Bitcoin into  “better, easier, crypto”, which is nothing more than a fiat coin being masqueraded as crypto.
Millions will be fooled.
A lobbyist from Standard Chartered will join the Facebook crypto-unit staff in September, possibly to assist with political and regulatory scrutiny in the EU. Facebook emissaries have reportedly been having lunch with the Governor of the Bank of England to see how the project may progress in the country amid Brexit.
Visa, Mastercard, PayPal and Uber are all backing GlobalCoin to the tune of $10 million dollars. This is in addition to the $1 billion in VC funding Nathanial Popper of the New York Times has reported that Facebook is seeking, either as an investment or for collateral.
For as much as Facebook has raised, the company has also acquired smart contracts producer, Chainspace, to assist development.
RBC has an outperform rating on Facebook with a price target of $250 a share. Facebook’s stock is up more than 35% this year as of Thursday’s close of $177.47 a share.

WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard New Companion Benefits May Not Be Beneficial
WestJet RBC World Elite Card New Benefits
First Published Date: March 20, 2016
The review I wrote about the WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard last year is one of the most popular credit card reviews on A Dawn Journal. So once I saw that WestJet updated this card with more benefits, I thought it would be perfect to write another piece on this.
In the past, the WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard annual companion bonus voucher was good for an annual companion flight for $99 (plus applicable taxes, fees and charges) to fly anywhere in Canada or the United States, excluding Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
However, WestJet announced on March 1, 2016 that the companion voucher would have full access to anywhere WestJet flies, including Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Europe. The price breakdown for the companion voucher is now:
– Canada and the Continental US for $99 (+ taxes, fees and charges)
– Hawaii, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean for $299 (+ taxes, fees and charges)
– Europe for $399 (+ taxes, fees and charges)
Whether the companion fare will save you money or not (after paying the $99 annual fee) depends on where you go and how much other airline fares are going for at the moment. Here are 3 samples I compiled on economy class based on possible lowest fares (including sale) that I checked today (March 13, 2016) travelling on April 17 to April 22:
Toronto to Las Vegas for two using companion voucher: $774
Toronto to Las Vegas for two on another airline using skyscanner.com : $1000
Toronto to Honolulu, Hawaii for two using companion voucher: $1417
Toronto to Honolulu, Hawaii for two on another airline using skyscanner.com : $1288
Toronto to Mexico City for two using companion voucher: $1800
Toronto to Mexico City for two on another airline using skyscanner.com : $927
As you can see, based on the above three samples and several other samples I tried, including travelling to Europe, you may find that travelling on other airlines costs less than WestJet, even using a discounted companion voucher. However, because the companion voucher works on any fare class on WestJet, you may find it useful if you are buying the more expensive Flex or Plus Fare class.
Whether you should continue keeping WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard or not depends on whether the companion voucher saves you money or not. Another friendly reminder (I also mentioned this in my first review) is that this card provides neither Trip Cancellation Insurance nor concierge service.

Only 15% of Canadian Bank Credit Cards Include Travel Medical Insurance
Review - Only 15% of Credit Cards Available At Major Canadian Banks Include Emergency Medical Travel Insurance
Numerous voyagers trust that they are enough secured by their Mastercard travel protection scope. In all actuality, most Mastercards give almost no scope. Those organizations that do give scope, tend to cover just non-restorative crises, for example, basic transporter mishap, things protection, or rental auto crash protection.
Tumblr media
Features of Survey
Out of 26 Visas just 4 offered crisis medicinal scope standard.
None of the crisis therapeutic protection designs cover seniors age 65 or more seasoned.
None of the unwaveringness Visas gathered with the expectation of complimentary flights offer crisis medicinal, trip dropping or trip interference protection standard.
A Note on Common Carrier Accident Insurance - The writing we read from the charge cards advanced this scope as a noteworthy advantage. We trust this is the reason numerous Canadians erroneously trust that they have travel therapeutic scope from their charge card organizations. Regular transporter Accident protection just covers your family if a mishap happens while you are on the basic bearer (flight, journey, prepare, transport, and so forth.) or while driving a rental auto. Furthermore, most Mastercard organizations will cover you ONLY on the off chance that you obtained the tickets (or booked your rental auto) with the Visa that offers this scope. We feel that those customers ought to be extremely watchful while depending on movement protection scope and need to peruse the arrangement in detail before leaving on their trek.
Notes from investigating charge card travel protection scope given by the significant banks Visas;
TD Canada Trust - VISA
None of the TD Canada Trust Credit Cards offer any type of crisis therapeutic travel protection, stuff, or rental fender bender, or excursion retraction scope.
Regular bearer travel mischance protection is accessible in different scope sums.
RBC Royal Bank - VISA
It is reasonable the RBC has the best charge card travel protection scope of the greater part of the huge banks in Canada. RBC Insurance is a vast travel protection supplier to the movement offices. Consequently, they have better foundation to suit travel protection designs as a component of its charge card benefits.
That being stated, just the favored charge cards with high yearly expenses and financing costs offer the crisis therapeutic, trip dropping and trip interference scope standard.
RBC Royal Bank crisis medicinal travel protection accessible on its favored Mastercards don't cover cardholders 65 and over.
CIBC - VISA
Like RBC, CIBC just offers crisis medicinal and trip interference on its Gold Visa. The enormous incongruity is this isn't CIBC's exceptionally well known Aerogold® Visa card that ardent explorers hold to exploit faithfulness focuses that can be recovered with the expectation of complimentary travel. Truth be told, the Aerogold® card just offers regular bearer mishap, things, and rental auto accident scope standard.
CIBC's crisis medicinal travel protection accessible on its Gold charge cards don't cover cardholders 65 and over.
Bank of Montreal - MasterCard
Most disappointingly, Bank of Montreal offers definitely no movement protection scope on any of its cards for nothing. All movement protection scope can be acquired in discrete bundles on a yearly premise. Add up to extensive scope will cost an extra $159 every year over any yearly charge card expenses. Lesser bundles are accessible for bring down expenses.
ScotiaBank - VISA
All of Scotiabank's Visa cards offer positively no movement protection scope by any stretch of the imagination. Except for the international ID gold Visa card, you should buy any extra scope for your trek.
Scotiabank crisis therapeutic travel protection accessible on its identification charge cards does not cover cardholders 65 and over.
Conclusion
We have found in our overview that deceptive promotions made by some Mastercard organizations abandon a few people to trust that they are completely shrouded in circumstances where mishaps and tragedies happen on their treks. It is prudent for you to set aside opportunity to peruse the terms and states of the protection given by your Mastercard organization to inspire amend data about the scope offered by your card backer
Get the correct protection to cover all your wellbeing needs while on your trek. Should you be an easygoing vacationer or healthy business voyager, ensure you are secured to appreciate 'true serenity' while on your trek. Visit https://wescaninsurance.ca/to buy your movement protection on the web.
