Love Stained, Chapter 9
A/N Well, here we are at the last chapter of Love Stained. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to read, like, kudo, reblog or comment on this story. I was nervous to post it at first, because I thought a story about a Jamie who was not only not a virgin, but a surrogate, would cause a minor uproar.
The entire work can now be found on my A03 page.
Six months later
Jamie admired the diaphanous wings of the dragonfly, trellised by veins, twice frozen: once by the tree sap into which it had inadvertently flown thousands of years ago, and again by the shutter of his camera. Enlarged to monumental proportions, they seemed to convey some deeper message. About the architecture of nature, the viscosity of memory, the duality of time that could rush forward and remain frozen simultaneously. Or perhaps he was just being maudlin.
“You can still change your mind and let me list it.” John came to stand beside his friend, admiring the rich tones of the photo.
“This one’s no’ for sale,” Jamie said, not for the first time. It was a foolish impulse, but the photograph reminded him of Claire. Because the fossil belonged to her, because he’d taken it that evening at the bothy when she’d first bared herself to him, but mostly because the amber was the exact shade of her eyes.
“Pity,” John continued, “because it’s the only one left.”
“What?” Jamie’s head whipped towards his agent who was wearing a smug grin.
“The other nine all sold. Estelle just closed on the last one. Congratulations, Jamie. Selling out your first Chelsea gallery show is remarkable. Doing so at the opening, well…” John slapped him on the shoulder, before nudging him with his elbow. “Aren’t you happy you finally bit the bullet and made the move to New York?”
“Aye, happy,” Jamie lied.
***
Walking down the sidewalk the morning Claire left him sleeping in hotel sheets that smelled of her skin, Jamie had pulled out his phone and called his agent, directing him to set up representation with a Chelsea art gallery. Two months’ later he was unpacking his camera gear and a duffle bag of possessions in a simple clapboard cabin tucked behind the windswept dunes of the Long Island seashore, paid for by the proceeds of his years as a sex surrogate. Except for the payment from Claire, which he’d refused to accept from Geillis during their final meeting, finally insisting that she donate it to a local woman’s shelter.
“And what shall I tell Claire if she asks?” Geillis inquired as Jamie rose to take his leave.
“Tell her…” Jamie’s voice stumbled on the rocks in his throat, forcing him to clear it and start over. “Tell her that I’m grateful for everything that she gave me.”
***
“Well, if you’re going to persist in your strange attachment to this photograph, then please come network a bit,” John urged. Jamie reluctantly followed him across the room towards a cluster of art critics and journalists, all wearing variations of the same black outfit. He felt like a sideshow attraction in his Fraser tartan and crisp white button-down that he wore for formal occasions, but John insisted it only added to his ‘cachet’.
“Smile a bit, would you? Bat those bonnie blue Scottish eyes and at least pretend to be enjoying your wildly successful evening. Jamie?”
Midway across the room, Jamie’s universe slammed to a halt. Near the door stood a slender woman. Flouting artistic convention, she wore a citrine dress, a sunbeam bursting forth against the monochromatic tedium of the rest of the room. Her hair was a lazy tornado of dark curls juxtaposed against the pale cumulus of her skin. Feline eyes skipped eagerly around the crowd, searching for someone with a hopeful longing that he yearned to assuage.
She caught sight of him, smiling tremulously. His concrete feet stayed rooted to the spot as she approached, frozen in time as surely as an insect trapped in amber.
Instead of greeting him, the woman turned to admire the photograph on a nearby wall. It was the ram’s horn, every bump and fissure topographical in its hyper-detail.
“It’s almost hypnotic, isn’t it?” Her voice was that strange combination of wispy and sure that he’d tried to recreate in his mind during the hundred lonely nights since he last heard it. “Like a familiar song played in a slightly different key.”
Jamie grunted his agreement, still not able to believe what was happening.
“But there’s something melancholy about it too. A homesickness, maybe?” she continued.
“Desiderium,” he spoke at last, the word gritty in his throat. “A grieving desire for something lost.”
“That’s the name of the exhibit, I believe. I read about it in the Sunday Times back in Edinburgh.”
“And ye came all the way from Scotland for the opening?” he asked in disbelief.
“Well,” she shrugged helplessly, “they’re very good photographs. And I wanted to meet the artist.”
She turned towards him, and it was then that he could read the uncertainty in her uncommon eyes.
“Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp,” she emphasized the last name as she extended a hand in greeting.
“James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser,” he replied with equal precision. As their palms met something certain and infinite settled over him, like oil on the choppy waters of his soul.
“Jamie?” With a jolt he realized they were still standing in the gallery, unable to look away or release their hold on one another, and that his agent had been watching their exchange with sharp interest.
“Aye, sorry John. This is Claire Beauchamp, from back home. Claire, may I introduce John Grey, my verra good friend and agent.”
After some polite chatter that he could barely hear over the rushing of his blood, John gave him a significant look and excused himself. Jamie glanced with yearning towards the gallery door, then back at the cluster of reporters who John was now working with practiced ease.
“I really need to…” he apologized.
“Go,” Claire gestured. “I’m the one who dropped in on your big day unannounced.”
“I’d verra much like to…” he paused, worrying his tongue along the back of his teeth and searching his memory for the near-forgotten protocol. “Would ye like to get a drink with me? After the show? I shouldna be verra long.”
A smile dawned across her face, warming him as surely as the rays of the summer sun.
“I’d like that very much. It will give me a chance to see the rest of your work. You’re incredibly talented, Jamie.”
It was the first time she’d called him by his real name. A rivulet of hope burst through the dam of asylum he’d built around his heart. Still, he was loathe to turn his back on her, lest she disappear once again.
“What is it?” Claire asked when he didn’t release her.
“Ye’ll wait for me?” It came out as a plea. He wasn’t just talking about their plans for the night. There was a minefield of pain and memory between him and their happily ever after. He was terrified she would lose patience and give up on him before he could cross it.
“I promise.”

A Place to Belong Chapter 25: What Ye Don’t Ken, Ye’ll Learn
Chapter 24
Read on AO3
Brianna’s second birthday came in the blink of an eye after the arrival of Michael and Janet. Two years, twenty-four months. Her vocabulary had quite expanded now, though her favorite word of all was “no;” it had, in fact, been her second word, shortly following “dog.”
“They learn that one fast,” Jenny had said.
Two years old, and Brianna was more stubborn than perhaps both of her parents combined. She was perfectly capable of verbally expressing her most basic needs, but Claire often had to pry it out of her like she was a locked vault. She often refused to use her words for whatever reason, and nobody could figure out why. Many a one-sided conversation would end with a tantrum of mass proportions, and Jenny would have to physically yank Claire away from the hysterical toddler.
“If ye stay there coddling her like that, ye’re giving her exactly what she wants,” Jenny said one day. “She’ll stop eventually if ye just let her alone.
From what little Claire knew about children, she was certain that Jenny was right, but that didn't mean it didn’t cause her physical pain to leave her child rolling in the middle of the hallway.
As predicted, she was also becoming more and more troublesome when it came to her escapades with Kitty. Both were more mobile than ever, and they were quite the experts on tormenting the dogs, and on sneaking biscuits right out from under Mrs. Crook’s nose. For that matter, they were experts on all things regarding pushing Mrs. Crook to the brink of losing her temper. They were like small dogs, always deliberately getting under foot and making a scene when they were nearly stepped on.
Maggie, just five years old now, was also becoming quite an expert; an expert at being mother-hen, that is. She could often be heard throughout the house, or outside, lecturing the younger ones in an adorable, high-pitched little voice, one that was trying its best to sound like her mother.
One day, Jenny and Claire were doing laundry, and Maggie came barreling around the side of the house.
“Mam! Auntie Claire!” she squeaked, her little cheeks red with exertion. “Kitty and Banna are bothering the goats!”
Jenny and Claire exchanged a knowing look, each rolling their eyes.
“Dinna fash, my wee lamb,” Jenny said. “The goats will be jest fine.”
“But they’re climbing, Mam!”
“The goats?” Jenny said, chuckling as she wrung out one of Ian’s sarks.
“Nae! Kitty and Banna!”
Claire’s heart immediately dropped into her stomach, and she and Jenny exchanged quite a different look. They dropped their laundry and hiked up their skirts and sprinted around the house to the goat pen. Kitty and Brianna were indeed standing on the second highest rung of the wooden fence, gripping the highest one, antagonizing the easily-angered ram. They arrived just in time to see the ram butt his horns into the fence, throwing both toddlers off to land on their backs.
Claire’s knees nearly gave out from under her, the world stopping as she screamed in terror. She sprinted to Brianna’s side, prepared for a violent seizure in response to the blunt force trauma to her head. Instead, she collapsed in the dirt beside her, and Brianna burst into a wild fit of giggles, joined shortly after by Kitty.
“Katherine Mary Fraser Murray!” Jenny howled, stamping right over to the three of them, standing over Kitty with her hands on her hips. “What the Devil d’ye mean by nearly getting yerself killed?”
Kitty’s laughter immediately ceased, and she sat up, the fear of God written all over her face.
“D’ye ken what might’ve happened? If ye’d gotten him just a bit more angry, ye could’ve hit yer head harder and died. D’ye ken that, Katherine?” Kitty’s face was uncharacteristically white, her blue eyes wide with terror. “Yer cousin could’ve died! D’ye ken that? Ye put wee Brianna in danger!”
That was when she burst into tears.
Claire, meanwhile, was fussing over Brianna, inspecting every inch of her head, checking her pupils, her pulse. Brianna’s laughter had stopped once Jenny had started yelling, but now she was upset in earnest.
“Why Kitty cryin’ Mummy?”
“Kitty is crying because Auntie Jenny is very upset with her,” Claire said, suddenly filled with her own rage at her daughter’s carelessness. “And I am very upset with you, Brianna.”
“Ye’re too young fer a thrashing, but ye will be taught a lesson. Up, now.” Kitty obeyed her mother, wailing in hysterics. Jenny seized her by the wrist and dragged her daughter behind her, marching right up to the house.
“Your Auntie is right. Something very bad could have happened to you, Brianna,” Claire said firmly, holding tightly onto Brianna’s wrists. “Do you understand? You could have triggered one of your fits. It could have hurt you very much.” Brianna was welling up with tears, but whether it was from what Claire was actually saying or just from the stern tone, Claire could not tell.
“Brianna. Do you understand?”
Claire watched as her little chubby face gradually turned red, and her nose and lips scrunched up.
“No!” she suddenly wailed, yanking against her mother’s grip on her wrists.
Claire exhaled sharply through her nose, her jaw setting hard. “I said, do you understand?”
“NO!”
“Alright. That’s enough.” Claire abruptly released her wrists so she could scoop her up around the middle and carry her, screeching and squirming, into the house. Admittedly, she nearly lost her grip several times, and she wondered how it could possibly be so difficult to hold onto something that only weighed twenty-seven pounds.
By the time they got inside, Jenny was already in the dining room, holding Kitty over her knees and administering light but firm smacks to her bottom. Claire paused in the doorway with Brianna, wincing at each small blow. Jenny finished, and looked up at Claire.
“D’ye want me to do it?” she said pragmatically, nudging her chin toward Brianna.
Claire really considered it for a moment. She didn't really want to spank her child; it wasn’t something she ever thought she’d be willing to do as a parent. It would be all too easy to let Jenny be the bad guy, to wash her hands of the situation.
But she couldn’t allow that. Brianna had to know to follow rules set by both her aunt and her mother. And besides, spanking and beating were not nearly the same thing.
“No. I should do it.” Claire sat down, struggling to position Brianna’s squirming little body in her lap. Jenny removed Kitty from her lap and stood her up on the floor, holding firmly onto her shoulders.
“Watch yer cousin now, Katherine. She’s being punished as well because of yer actions.” Jenny looked at Claire. “I gave her five.”
Claire nodded resolutely. “Alright.”
Brianna howled and shrieked, probably much more than was actually warranted, but it wasn’t long before five swats were administered. Claire lifted her up again, settling her to sit on her knee.
“D’ye understand why ye’ve had to be punished? Both of ye?” Jenny looked back and forth between the two toddlers, and Kitty nodded vehemently. Brianna waited until Kitty nodded, but agree she did. “Ye canna be angering the beasts. They dinna ken how small ye are, and they dinna care. They’re wild, dumb creatures. They will hurt ye. D’ye understand?”
Kitty nodded, wiping her eyes sloppily with the back of her hand, and Brianna nodded as well.
“Good. Off ye get to the nursery, now. No more outdoors today.” Jenny departed and returned with Mrs. Crook to ask her to see the little ones upstairs. Claire resisted the urge to kiss Brianna’s head before she put her down on the floor.
Sighing heavily, Jenny led Claire out of the dining room, but they both stopped short as Jenny’s legs collided with something. They heard a little sniffle, and both looked down to see Maggie, her face stained with fresh tears.
“Maggie, mo chridhe, what’s the matter?”
She sniffled again. “Kitty and Banna got punished because I told.”
“Och, my gentle wee lamb,” Jenny tutted, reaching down and heaving her up into her arms, settling her on her hip.
“You did the right thing by coming to us, darling,” Claire said softly, brushing a few curls off her damp forehead. “They could have been hurt.”
She hiccuped a little and nuzzled into her mother’s neck.
“That’s right, mo ghraidh. It’s a good thing ye came fer us. They had to be punished so they would learn, so they wouldna get hurt again. D’ye understand?”
She nodded, her lips still drooping in a sad little pout. Jenny gave a soft chuckle and kissed the top of Maggie’s head.
“I never had to swat at this one’s bottom,” Jenny said to Claire, leading them back outside. “No’ a troublemaker like the other two.”
Claire smiled lightly as Jenny set Maggie down next to the washtub.
“Would you like to help us, love?” Claire said, stroking Maggie’s hair.
“Aye, Auntie.”
“There’s my good lass,” Jenny crooned. “Up ye get.” She helped her onto the little stool by the clothesline so she could reach.
“She’s so sensitive, the dear girl,” Claire said softly, plunging her hands back into the frigid water.
“Aye,” Jenny said, chuckling again. “Dinna ken where she gets it from.”
Claire chuckled. “Do you think she’ll ever forgive me?”
“Maggie?” Jenny’s brow furrowed.
“No, no…”
“Och, dinna fash about that,” Jenny scoffed. “She’ll be hanging on yer legs again by supper.” She rang out the previously abandoned sark and handed it to Maggie. “Ye ken it had to be done, aye?”
“No, I do. Yes,” Claire said.
“Ye’ll get used to it sister.” Jenny patted her wrist with a wet hand. “And she willna love ye any less fer it.”
Claire sighed. She knew Jenny was right, and she also knew it was only going to get worse from here.
——
In Brianna’s second year of life, she’d had four seizures. Two less than last year, putting her at ten for her whole small lifetime. Claire had certainly heard of worse cases of epilepsy, so she supposed she should be counting her blessings. But the guilt that gripped her stomach with every seizure was enough to send her spiraling into self-doubt and self-loathing for days at a time.
It was a good thing that Jenny would not tolerate it for very long.
She let Claire hover over Brianna as she slept, let her weep, let her coddle the child days after the post-seizure lethargy ended. But any admonishment of herself as a mother was where Jenny drew the line.
“If ye say it so often, ye’ll start to believe it, and then where will Brianna be?”
Claire couldn’t help but admit that Jenny was right.
It did no good to linger on her supposed shortcomings, because while Claire was still thinking about what she could have and should have done differently two years ago, a week ago, yesterday, or five minutes ago, Brianna was already getting into trouble again and needing intervention.
It was exhausting, being a mother. But it was something that Claire cherished above all else. No matter how many times she heard the word “no” from her daughter’s stubborn little mouth, no matter how many times she slipped naked out of her grasp and trailed bathwater all over the house before Claire could catch up, no matter how many messes of flour she managed to make in the kitchen, no matter how desperately Claire feared for her life every day, it was all worth it when she heard that little voice:
“Up, Mummy!”
“Hug, Mummy?”
“Mummy kiss?”
Or, her newest revelation, Claire’s favorite string of words she’d ever heard in her life:
“Love you, Mummy.”
When Claire cradled her sleeping toddler, her mouth hanging open and dripping with just the tiniest bit of drool, hearing little snores with every breath, the knitted lamb squeezed firmly into her little chest, it was impossible to remember anything but what an angel she was when she slept.
This is ours, Jamie. Those little red cheeks, her wee teeth, those pudgy hands, those smiling, sleepy lips, her soft, sweet smelling head. All ours, love.
Claire certainly didn’t forget -- his absence colored her every movement and affected every decision; the ache was tangible, always -- but it was easy for thoughts of Jamie to fall to the wayside when she was constantly dashing forward to stop her little troublemaker from toppling down the stairs or knocking something onto her head. In their waking hours, while Brianna squealed and caused a ruckus with her cousins, tormented the dogs and the other animals, trampled a few herbs in the garden when Claire wasn’t looking, it was impossible to think of anything but containing that bundle of energy.
But in quiet moments in the chair by the hearth, no light but the fire and the pale moon, watching the thick lashes that they had made flutter shut over the blue eyes that he had given her, listening to her babbling become less and less coherent as she drifted into dreamland, Claire could think of nothing else. Nothing else but how desperately she longed to see him hold her, to see him scoop her up before she could touch the hot metal grate over the fireplace, to hear them laugh together.
“Up, Da!”
“Hug, Da?”
“Da kiss?”
“Love you, Da.”
These were words that haunted her at night, words that kept her awake, staring at her daughter while she slept soundly. If she concentrated, she could really hear it, her daughter’s squeaky little voice calling out to her father.
“Da is here, mo ghraidh. Mo chridhe. My wee lass."
She could hear that, too.

Bluegrass-Chapter One
A special thanks to @statell for your help and wisdom
Chapter One
Claire bounced out of bed feeling amazing and full of energy. From her hilltop home, she could look out over the most beautiful expanse of bluegrass fields below that were covered in misty fog at this early hour. It was an inspiring view of the best Kentucky had to offer. Setting down a steamy mug of strong coffee she went through her morning yoga poses breathing in the crispy air gratefully. She pressed her hands together in front of her heart, bowed slightly, and said “Namaste” to the beautiful day.
“God I love days like this.”
She pulled her scrubs on, and a hat atop her fresh-scrubbed face, and bounced out the front door looking for her ride. Typical, she thought, he is late again. She looked at the hands of her watch, 7:38, that guy will never amount to much being late all the time. She didn’t like the energy shift and carefully pressed her body into a particularly hard yoga pose as she closed her eyes and welcomed her calm center. The pose balanced all her body weight on the ball of one foot, the other leg pulled into the air behind her. She took a deep breath in and exhaled slowly. On her second intake of air the ear-splitting horn of her supercharged Ram, a hospital on wheels blared from the road. The shock was enough to topple her pose, twisting just in time to let her ample butt hit the ground first.
Dusty cursed watching her fall, feeling like a total idiot. His excitement was on overload this morning, so happy to finally be early and prove to Claire he could make his commitments. She said 8:00 and it was now 7:45, a true miracle for him, except Claire was now laying on the patio concrete after he scared her half to death. “Goddamnit, when am I gonna think before I do stuff?”
He ran to help his employer off her ass and noticed her scrubs. They were treating the yearlings today at Highland Brothers Farms and they would be there all day. It was a big deal for Claire, and he thought she should have dressed more…something. Dusty pulled his hat off and watched her feet rise into the air as she used her temporary time of the ground to pull a perfect headstand.
“Ah, Doctor Beauchamp, are ye ready to go? I’m sorry I honked at ye and made ye fall. Now ye got dirt on yer pants.” He didn’t dare look at her on the ground, so he spoke to her cowboy boots.
“You are late Dusty.”
He was about to launch into an argument, but her boots swung to the ground and she popped up with a red face and smiled at him.
“Let’s go.”
Claire jumped into the passenger seat of her amazing vehicle. It was her biggest investment after graduation. With a price tag of almost two hundred thousand, the vehicle did everything a mobile vet would need. Claire had structured their working relationship where Dusty would keep her truck at the end of the day. She only had to jump out, wave as she walked up the steps to her cabin in the woods. It wasn’t easy for Dusty to drive away knowing she had no other vehicle, but this is how she wanted it.
As Dusty fell under Claire’s spell he googled the vehicle and almost passed out at the price. With a fully stocked hospital in the converted bed, he estimated two-hundred-fifty thousand dollars. He gripped his computer desk and tried to breathe. The next weekend he recruited his buddies to come and build a garage to park it in. He installed the best security he could buy and finally felt worthy of her trust the first night the electric garage door closed the vehicle in for the night.
The workday did not end when Claire waved him goodbye. Dusty would wash off the caked-on mud and vegetation that collected in the grill and wheel wells from driving into the farms. Once a month he would wax and buff until he was dripping with sweat. Sometimes she would notice, sometimes she wouldn’t. Either way, it was his honor to do it.
Dusty would grimace and complain to his friends about her demanding nature and lack of appreciation, it’s what young men in Kentucky did when they worked for a female, especially a woman doctor. But it was a kaleidoscope of emotions he felt every day, running interference between her and the world. He was in awe of the young veterinarian and her extraordinary diagnostic abilities.
Claire had her nose in a medical book when Dusty jumped into the driver’s seat. He was at war with himself to mention her scrubs and finally asked if she wanted to change before they left. Her head jerked up at him as her heavy black glasses slid down her nose,
“change into what Dusty?”
“Ah, never mind, not important. Let’s go.” He exhaled a miserable breath wanting to kick his own ass for being such a pussy. He had spent half his paycheck on starched new clothes for today to show respect to the great Jamie Fraser, owner, and breeder at Highland Brothers. Claire’s reputation for being a super healer was burning across Kentucky and doors were opening for her in the most prestigious farms, Highland Brothers being number one on the list.
Claire pulled a stack of files onto her lap to update her treatment notes while Dusty drove. She asked him questions on every file she opened.
“What did we do to the Miller gelding?”
“Drained the abscess, front left chest, forty cc’s of penicillin.”
“What about the Hildebrandt mare that foundered.”
“Restrained in her stall, estimated three months, the family wants to save her.”
“Oh! Thank God.”
This continued through the forty-minute drive to Highland Brothers. Dusty had a stunning mind that remembered every detail of each day. Every animal, every owner, breeder, barn ranking, problem mares, sick and injured horses. Drugs, dosages, and who still owed her money. She looked at his handsome face and sighed, making him look at her and blush. He always blushed when their eyes met, and he quickly looked away.
Claire knew he would make huge contributions to equine medicine. He was already an expert on grain nutrition, and he hadn’t started vet school yet. It was the reason she pushed him so hard.
“I really don’t know what I will do without you, Dustin. Have you chosen a school yet now that you have so many to choose from?” She put her hand up to stop him from talking. “I don’t want to discuss it actually, it makes me…. not happy. Hoooooly bloody shit! Look at how the superstars live!”
Claire’s mouth hung open as her eyes took in every detail of the fancy compound. She swept her eyes across the acres of green, as far as she could see. As they got closer, she saw horses on the track with jockeys and trainers, along with mares and foals in the pastures. She looked ahead at a large Bay gelding being led to an outside arena.
“Doctor B, what do ye think of Jamie Fraser?”
“Who?”
“The owner of Highland Brothers.”
“Never met him.”
Dusty rolled his eyes and realized his boss was not impressed with celebrity in the horse world. If he wasn’t hailed in her medical world or mentioned in her books, he was insignificant.
Claire’s practiced eye scanned the horses she could see as they were being led, running the track, or grazing in the beautiful meadows around the complex. She wasn’t happy with what she saw and felt from them.
She approached the Bay gelding and ran her hand down his back while the handler looked annoyed.
“I am Doctor Beauchamp and this horse is sick. Back up please so he can breathe. The man knew who she was and gave her space. Claire placed her open palms on both sides of the horse's face and stood perfectly still for five minutes as the horse dropped his head into her hands. She jumped back into the truck and looked wide-eyed at Dusty.
“He is sick Dusty, he said they all are, even the babies.”
“Ah, Doctor B, here’s the thing, ye need to keep that part to yourself if ye can. We talked about how it creeps-out the breeders and how they don’t believe in yer gift. Remember?”
“I remember something about that, but I don’t have time to pick my words around these people.” Her face had gone white and her eyes wide and worried. “They are all sick. Someone has done this to them,” she whispered.
Claire walked through the large housing facility that kept some of the most expensive horses in the world. She stopped in front of a beautiful gray mare, stunning actually. She approached feeling the horse’s exceptional health and vitality. Claire was doubtful this horse could be immune to whatever this was. She touched the beast and listened. The mare wanted to leave this place, not afraid of getting sick, but to get away from her rider. Claire felt an evil cold settle into her bones.
“I’m here now. I won’t let them hurt you.”
She went stall to stall gaining more of the story feeling alarm bells go off in her head. She looked for Dusty, he had an important role to play in this rescue. What Claire saw next almost made her heart stop and she took off running as fast as she could. The housing complex was huge and a man with the grain cart was shoveling something into the feeders at the other end. She pushed herself feeling her thighs on fire from the effort.
“Stop! Please stop!”
The man looked up at the woman running full speed for him and just stopped like he was frozen. When Claire caught up to him, she was panting but very thankful he listened to her. She could hear Dusty run up behind her and turned to lock eyes with him. Her voice was quiet, but he heard the stress and felt the immediacy.
“They are eating it, whatever it is that’s making them sick! Look at that horse Dusty!”
She pointed to a large thoroughbred that had backed himself into the corner of his stall, as far from the offending food as he could get. Dusty asked the worker to show him where the feed is kept. Claire continued walking the line of stalls.
She found the breeding wing and it almost crippled her when she touched the mares, fat with foals. She touched them and made promises to help, overwhelmed by how many had given up, ready to accept death because they were so sick.
She was running again trying to find Dustin or the owner that let this happen. She felt the enormity of loss that was coming as all these horses would lay down today for the last time. She started yelling for Dusty at the top of her lungs until he was running toward her. His face told her he found something, whatever it was. Dear God, she thought, who could do such a thing.
“I think I found it, Claire, there’s a shiny coating on the rolled oats. I told that man to lock down the feed room, stand guard, and not let anyone in. Fraser is in a meeting you need to pull him out."
“Triage Dustin, back the truck into the complex, park halfway down this aisle, don’t let the motor run for a second longer than you have to. Hurry!” Minutes later her enormous dually was backing down the aisle, just as Jamie Fraser was running for it yelling at Dusty to get that vehicle out of his barn.
Claire watched him run up on Dusty who stood his ground and pointed at her. Fraser was yelling but she couldn’t be bothered with that, she felt a distinctive change in the energy around her and looked to her side in time to see a horse collapse.
When the first horse went down right in front of her, she shrieked for Dustin to bring fluids and rushed into the stall.
“No, no, no, no! Don’t go” she shouted grabbing her stethoscope pressing it into a quiet chest. She heard another horse fall nearby and another. She bent over, sobbing, and held her stomach. They would all die if she didn’t galvanize against the horror. She was running for the truck as Fraser turned wicked eyes on her. He was roaring at her and she hit him at a full run telling him to get out of the way!
She called out a cocktail of drugs to load into 20 CC syringes and a large gauge needle to shoot the life-saving mixture into the jugular. They were both filling syringes as fast as possible.
“I assume you are James Fraser. Your horses have been poisoned, they will all die in the next few hours, many already have. If you want to help, call every veterinarian you know to help us. On the double Mister Fraser!”
Jamie put fingers to his mouth and blew a loud strange whistle. Two men ran toward him, white-faced, and stopped, waiting for orders. Three cell phones came out and the men called for reinforcement. Dusty ran behind Claire with a sack full of filled syringes. She administered the drug cocktail very fast and listened to the heartbeat stabilize before running to the next. Other men were driving their rigs into the complex and running for the drug protocol. Dusty gave the drugs and dosage and the veterinarians stared back at him frozen in place.
Jamie Fraser was on the verge of collapse, but he ran behind one of the doctors holding the precious syringes. Claire was on her knees doing an emergency cesarean section of a dead mare. Her hands were a blur and Dusty stood above her ready to split the tissue and pull the distressed foal out. Another vet stood watching Claire, eyes wide at her ability to move that fast. He grabbed a blanket to cover the foal and rubbed until he saw movement.
Jamie Fraser looked at the body of his favorite broodmare, ripped open savagely to save a baby that was worth a fortune. Claire ran by him coming back in five minutes with a large bottle of warm milk and enormous nipple. She pressed it into Jamie’s hands and looked into his anguished eyes.
“Please, save the ones we can.”
She pushed him gently toward the baby who was clearly needing some comfort. Jamie wrapped his warmth around the baby and offered the bottle, encouraging the colt to drink.
Claire watched with gushing eyes. She knew they had to assess the loss, pronounce prize horses dead, and prepare for the next round of drug therapy. Fraser was so big and strong. He seemed so capable and willing. She felt her body inch toward him and then kneel next to him. She corrected the angle of the bottle and then leaned against him and sobbed.
Jamie was overwhelmed with this little veterinarian who took command like a general and was spot on with the drugs that would save his horses. When she collapsed into him, he quickly wrapped an arm around her and supported her while she fell apart. He held the bottle for the colt in the other hand. Dusty walked over to her and bent to help her up but Jamie shook his head.
“It’s alright laddie. I’d say she’s earned it.”
Just like that, Claire stopped crying and stood up. A nod to Fraser and she was onto her next task.
The next half hour culled the sickest from the rest. Those that were on death’s door were struggling. Claire put her hands on one gelding’s face and heard or felt how sick he still was. She was very sympathetic at how awful he felt and let him know she insisted he live.
“Dusty! Positive-feedback hypovolemic protocol with 5 cc of digitalis, mix with a quarter dose for hypertension, on the double if you please. Claire grabbed a loaded syringe and ran for the sick gelding. He had given up and was taking his last few breaths as she pushed the cocktail into the huge vein in his neck. He seemed paralyzed, his big head suspended and shaking very low to the ground. She watched him as the other veterinarians questioned her protocol suspiciously. She moved to the gelding’s side and he pushed against her needing her reassurance. Dusty sat on the corral bars watching and waiting, hardly breathing.
The horse gave a healthy snort and lifted his head to a normal position. His tail whacked at flies and he shook his head like he was throwing off the illness.
“Dusty, you know the cocktail.”
Dusty dropped off the bars and jogged to the truck with the other vets watching the mixture he pulled into multiple syringes. Three of the vets left saying the protocol was too much risk. Those that stayed bravely followed Claire’s orders and pulled numerous horses from death’s door.
Claire wrote the milk recipe on a notepad and went to find James Fraser. It took all her strength to hold tears back when she saw his grave face. He moved toward her and the little colt followed so close he plowed into his butt when Jamie stopped in front of her. Even this newborn had the strength to knock Fraser right into Claire’s arms as she laughed nervously feeling a jolt of lightening shoot to her feet.
“Sorry. Ye have a theory lass?”
“I’m sorry to say I do Mister Fraser but it’s not a theory. Someone who has access to the horses and their food tried to kill them, all of them, near as I can tell. Dusty, my assistant, is taking blood and fecal samples and we must carefully get samples of every bag of feed, guarding against cross-contamination. Fortunately, we were able to lock the feed room within minutes of arriving.”
“There are feed rooms throughout the building!” Jamie whistled again and the two men came running. Hearing the order to lock down the other four grain rooms they took off in opposite directions. Claire watched them and prepared to tell Fraser what would be needed for the samples when she went rigid and pale. Fraser could see her hands shaking at her sides.
“What is it!”
“Do…do you have a water main that can shut off the water to the horses?”
Fraser heard the tension in her voice and started running. Claire was very aware of the thirst from her drug protocol and wondered how much they had consumed already.
“Sweet Jesus.” Claire ran along the stalls spilling the water as she went. This high-tech facility used floaters in the water buckets to make the water turn on automatically. She pushed the buckets sideways to spill the water only to hear the faucet above them run a fast stream to refill it. “Come on Fraser, turn it off.” Finally, she could spill the water and the faucets did not turn on. She ran along the stalls spilling the water and reached for her phone.
“Dustin! Hold off more samples we need to get the water out of the stalls. The water main is off, hurry!”
Jamie and his two managers came back and joined the effort to empty the water buckets. When Fraser came back to Claire his face was a mixture of fear, sorrow, and white-hot rage.
“Take a breath, Mister Fraser, there will be time for punishment unless we blow it and start making mistakes. I need to think for a few minutes and form a plan” She walked away mumbling and touching her fingers like she was making a list. She intended to lock herself in her truck for some quiet time but there wasn’t time for such a luxury. She ran back to Jamie panting from the effort.
“Those two men you work with can they be trusted?”
“Aye, with my life.”
“Please call them, or whistle, and tell them to listen to me, please hurry.”
Claire watched the large roll away doors to the outside clearly terrified about something. Fraser whistled again and his two best friends since childhood were racing toward him. “Listen to the doctor boys, do as she says.”
Claire pulled the group into a tight circle so she could speak quietly. She explained her fear of the next strike against Jamie.
Someone who was trusted to have access to the horses and feed tried to poison them. Dusty believes it’s a glycol-based poison so it’s cumulative, over time. Somehow they got all the horses to peak at the same time. I would not think it possible, but it happened so this person is knowledgeable, smart, and determined to bring this place and Fraser down in a glorious murder fest by ruthlessly killing the world’s best horseflesh in the process. I don’t know how long it took to pull this off, but I know the person responsible is close by and may know we thwarted the grand plan with minimal loss. This fucked up bastard will be coming for you Fraser, tonight, now!” Pretend you’re him and you can barely contain your rage, what would you do? Right now, what would you do!”
The three men flinched when she yelled the question. “Call the boarders and the trainers. Anyone with notoriety and a horse stabled here. Tell those people they’re all dead and its Jamie’s fault.” Claire waited while the men wrapped their heads around the enormity of the hatred behind this attack. Jamie’s voice was heard above the others,
“He’ll call the press and start a media frenzy that will go around the world. It will be so easy. People will stampede this place and destroy evidence, prevent the samples, maybe put me in jail until every animal is gone and the evidence is ruined. Jesus Sassenach please help me, tell me ye got a plan.”
Claire looked up, surprised all three of them were looking at her to answer. “Dusty has water and bowl swipe samples and every grain that was opened. If we can clear the water as the source and get the buckets full it’s a win for us. She looked at Dustin sitting on corral bars nearby and told him to go. Dustin drove slowly until he was out of the barn where he left tread on stones racing away.
“We need to pull in the authorities. If there’s anyone you know and trust, call them. Mister Fraser, can you estimate the financial loss attempted today?”
Jamie scanned the stalls as he calculated a rough estimate. “Fifteen to twenty million.”
“Well, that pushes into the territory of the FBI and I’m in favor of bypassing local police, at least until we can process the crime scene. For that, we need a forensic team. Let’s hope a twenty- million- dollar loss will get us one. Last, and most important, we need to remove the dead horses and hide them. I am so sorry gentlemen but six horses dead in their stalls will seal your fate. Game over, you lose.”
“I know what to do.” Jamie pulled Angus and Rupert to walk with him while Claire called her friend at the university where a pacing Dusty waited.
The horses were getting desperate for water and Claire felt their tremendous thirst and heard the hooves banging against the bars. What could they do if the water was the source? Turn them all out and let them fight for the little that collected after a rain? It would be brutal and bloody.
Claire felt like she would split down the middle from the accumulating tension. She walked the line of stalls watching for distress in the horses. She stopped and looked up and down the aisle, noticing for the first time how many stalls were empty. She saw name tags on each of them but no horse. She estimated half of the animals were gone.
The walking calmed her down a little but she couldn’t wait any longer to call the lab. She prayed they were done with the water.
“Hello Michael, you are my hero today. Do you have any results on the water yet?” She held her cell phone so tightly she feared it would crack and still could not relax her hand.
“I love hearing your accent, Claire. I’m so sorry about what happened today.”
“The water Michael?”
“Yea, I have the results of the water. The phone in the lab actually has a cord, can you believe it?”
“Michael?”
“Yea, hold on I’ll grab the report.”

This not only streamlines the ordering process but also empowers customers to explore the menu at their own pace and customize their dining experience.
Moreover, interactive menus can showcase additional information about ingredients, dietary restrictions, and sourcing practices, catering to the preferences of health-conscious diners. Large-format digital displays can serve as focal points within the restaurant, displaying dynamic visuals, videos, and animations that capture the attention of diners and create a vibrant atmosphere.
Restaurants can leverage digital signage to tell their brand story, highlighting their history, values, and commitment to quality through compelling visuals and narratives. Interactive elements, such as touchscreens or motion sensors, can further engage customers by allowing them to explore different aspects of the brand experience, from behind-the-scenes footage to chef interviews.
Immersive Digital Art Installations
Another creative way to integrate technology into restaurant decor is through immersive digital art installations. Projection mapping, LED screens, and interactive art pieces can transform blank walls and empty spaces into dynamic canvases that captivate the senses and spark conversation among diners.
Restaurants can collaborate with digital artists and designers to create custom installations that reflect their unique aesthetic and ambiance. From mesmerizing light shows to interactive installations that respond to movement or sound, digital art can elevate the dining experience and leave a lasting impression on customers long after they leave the restaurant.
Smart Lighting and Ambient Controls
In addition to visual elements, technology can also be used to enhance the ambiance and mood of the restaurant through smart lighting and ambient controls. Programmable LED lighting systems allow restaurants to adjust the color, intensity, and patterns of light to create different atmospheres throughout the day or evening.
For example, restaurants can use warm, inviting lighting during dinner service to create a cozy and intimate ambiance, while brighter, energizing lighting may be preferred for brunch or lunch service. Automated ambient controls can also synchronize with music playlists or special events, enhancing the overall dining experience and immersing customers in the restaurant's unique vibe.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
While incorporating technology into restaurant decor offers numerous benefits, it's essential to consider sustainability and energy efficiency in the design and implementation process. Energy-efficient LED lighting, eco-friendly materials, and recyclable components can help minimize the environmental impact of tech-savvy decor elements while reducing operational costs and promoting sustainability.

In this blog, we'll explore how statement walls can elevate restaurant decor, captivating diners and setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience.
The Power of Visual Impact
The first impression is often the most lasting, and when it comes to restaurant decor, the visual impact of a statement wall can be unparalleled. Incorporating Nature Indoors
Nature-inspired decor has become increasingly popular in restaurant design, offering a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Statement walls adorned with natural elements such as living greenery, reclaimed wood panels, or cascading water features bring a sense of tranquility and harmony to the dining space. By seamlessly integrating the outdoors indoors, Ram’s Horn Restaurant has created a serene oasis where guests can relax and rejuvenate amidst the beauty of nature.

As diners become more conscious of their ecological footprint, restaurants can leverage statement walls adorned with natural elements to appeal to environmentally-conscious customers and differentiate themselves in a competitive market.
Cultivating Cultural Connections
One of the most compelling aspects of dining out is the opportunity to explore different cultures through food and ambiance. Statement walls offer a creative platform for restaurants to celebrate their cultural heritage or pay homage to global influences. Whether it's showcasing indigenous artwork, traditional crafts, or historical motifs, these immersive displays transport diners on a culinary journey around the world. Ram’s Horn Restaurant Fraser

Statement walls offer an opportunity to experiment with a wide range of textures and materials, from rough-hewn stone and tactile fabrics to sleek metal accents and intricate tile patterns. By juxtaposing different textures, restaurants can create visually dynamic spaces that engage the senses and invite tactile exploration.
Moreover, incorporating unexpected materials into statement walls can evoke a sense of luxury and sophistication, elevating the dining experience to new heights. For example, a feature wall adorned with shimmering metallic tiles or handcrafted leather panels exudes opulence and glamour, making diners feel like royalty from the moment they step foot into the restaurant. Moreover, interactive statement walls can serve as valuable marketing tools, providing opportunities for user-generated content and social media sharing. Diners who interact with these immersive displays are more likely to share their experiences online, generating buzz and attracting new customers to the restaurant. By creating memorable moments that encourage social sharing, restaurants can leverage interactive statement walls to increase brand visibility and cultivate a loyal fan base.
Lighting as a Design Element
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and ambiance of a restaurant, and statement walls offer the perfect canvas for creative lighting solutions. Whether it's using LED strips to highlight architectural details, projecting patterns and shapes onto textured surfaces, or incorporating illuminated signage, lighting can transform a static wall into a dynamic focal point that evolves throughout the day and night.
Moreover, lighting can also be used to enhance the overall aesthetic of statement walls, accentuating textures, and creating dramatic visual effects. By employing effective seating arrangement strategies, restaurant owners can create inviting atmospheres that enhance customer satisfaction and optimize operational efficiency.
Understanding Space Utilization
Before diving into the specifics of seating arrangement, it’s essential for restaurant owners to assess and understand the spatial layout of their establishment.
