I was thinking about how the books in the Lumatere Chronicles have definite main characters, but that we also get other POVs througout the series, which led me to this: POV percentage per book/the series as a whole (this wasn't the most accurate research in the world, but it's close enough damn it).

I would have guessed that we had less of Froi's POV in Froi of the Exiles because all of the other POVs are so prominent in my memory, but I think Marchetta is just really good at spacing it out and timing things perfectly. We don't get Isaboe's POV until the last book, which I didn't realize before. Something that I HAD realized before, though, is that we don't get Trevanion or Beatriss after the second book, which has always bummed me out a little bit :( like, they get married and we don't get to hang out with them anymore (they were always kind of outliers though, as all the other major POVs are from the younger generation, which makes sense narratively). Also, Quintana's POV is the only one in first person, which I think is fascinating and such a wonderful move.

you may notice. i have ignored a substantial portion of celie description in favour of doing my own thing. this is because i don't have it in me to draw three separate characters who look like clones of one parent with no resemblance to the other. also i think being an august clone is a deeply uninteresting way to be uninteresting

#my vision: froi and celie matching heights (5'10) lording this over the younger lads for many years. until their growth spurts hit and all #3 take after abian heavily. 2 bad so sad but froi's in charyn so still gets to be tall. god knows what the average height is in belegonia.#this is where narrow-build (from august) celie comes in also because if they're the same height and froi has the shoulders of an ox.#then celie is going to pull off the necessary sickliness (or appearance thereof) without actually having anything explicitly going on #(voice of a madman) and you see this also plays into the coeliac belief by--#anyway. really something that quintana's the only major character to explicitly resemble both her birth parents

Finished my Finnikin of the Rock reread. It’s still by far my least favorite of the trilogy and I still just can’t warm up to Evanjalin in it tho I come to like her later (I totally get why she is the way she is - it’s a well-written character -just not my jam.) It’s very well written and I do enjoy it but doesn’t do it for me the way the other two do. But woooo on to book 2, which I adore adore adore!

Btw @aysekira if you do decide to read this trilogy and find yourself blah on book 1 just skim/skip and move on to book 2. You can read book 2 fine without reading book 1. (Book 2/3 are just one long novel but book 1 is not that entwined.) And I promise Froi of the Exiles and Quintana of Charyn are amazing!

I keep forgetting just how dark the Lumatere Chronicles were but every once in a while i get a flashback. How was this ever marketed as YA?

#don't get me wrong #it's one of my favorite series (though it's been a while since i've read it) and i think the dark parts were handled well #or at list i remember it that way #i read it at age 16-17 #and ok some of the main characters are around these ages but i really think this should be classified as adult fantasy #book 2 had literal r*pe scenes #and the themes at least as much as i remember were not very YA either #especially book 2 and 3 #but the story line of book 1 reminded me a lot of my history class at the time #lumatere chronicles #melina marchetta #finnikin of the rock #froi of the exiles #quintana of charyn

Taking a quick break from all the Manorian content to recommend this series. I’ve read it a couple of times but it’s been a while so a lot of it feels new this time around. There’s angst, slow burns (Lucian and Phaedra dear lord 🥵), politics, surviving after trauma, squabbling families, and magical curses. Lots of curses.
