A couple of days ago, I was collecting seeds from the milkweed pods in our yard. Having not done this before, but being fully aware of the fuzzy stuff that flies out of the pods, I was battling fuzz (technically, "floss") as I was pulling off and storing the seeds. Then I got smart, and decided to cut a slit in the pods and then gently pull out the mass of floss and seeds, and then just pulling the seeds off and dropping then into the container. As I was doing that, I noticed how super soft the floss was as I pulled it fresh out of the pods, and wondered........do any clothing manufacturers use this stuff? Did a Google search, and learned....yep!
Excerpt from this story from Happy Eco News:
As consumers demand more eco-conscious apparel, brands are getting creative with natural materials that keep warmth in and environmental harm out. One unlikely hero emerging from prickly planted fields is the common milkweed—yes, literally plucked straight from the wild. While best known as the sole food source for iconic, struggling Monarch butterflies, milkweed’s hidden potential is nestled right inside its fluffy, silken floss. This fleecy fiber is an amazing natural insulator and is finding a new application in jackets, parkas, boots, and ski gloves for humans.
As outdoor apparel companies race to reduce environmental impacts, milkweed clothing insulation is proving a promising substitute for conventional insulation fillers—one aligned with cleaner agricultural systems. Its hollow-cored fluff offers an animal-friendly, biodegradable alternative to goose down. Unlike petroleum-based synthetics like polyester fibers, milkweed fills garments with a regeneratively sourced material that decomposes rather than lingering for centuries in landfills.
With conscious consumerism accelerating across industries, apparel buyers now consider impacts far beyond cost and quality when evaluating purchases. An unlikely hero from both suffering North American grasslands and climate crosshairs is rapidly gaining traction as a sustainable insulation material – common milkweed floss. Beyond keeping heat in and winter out with insulating performance rivaling goose down, milkweed rates exceptionally on multiple sustainability indicators resonant with eco-conscious consumers.
As a native perennial thriving on marginal lands, milkweed flourishing requires no irrigation, fertilizers or pesticides – regrowing reliably year after year. From a toxicity and allergen standpoint, milkweed avoids issues associated with many synthetic insulations or down. And supporting milkweed crop expansion helps reverse monarch butterfly declines blamed on agricultural habitat loss. For shoppers concerned over microplastics shedding into waterways from standard fleece, milkweed offers a soft, homegrown, biodegradable alternative. In short, milkweed checks all the boxes for socially mindful consumers seeking future-focused apparel that balances functionality with ethical, regenerative supply supporting threatened pollinators.
Signaling the momentum of milkweed clothing insulation, major brands like Patagonia are incorporating the fluff through novel partnerships with companies like Vegeto Textiles. Dedicated milkweed plantings bandwidth habitat zones while fibers make their way into garments. Other types of textile manufacturers are also jumping on board, some with announced plans to insulate blankets and quilts with milkweed.
Still, despite its promise, milkweed clothing insulation remains in its infancy. Technological barriers to processing millions of floss strands into a stable textile filling have just recently been worked out. Machinery and techniques to update this long-known application concept into a scalable commercial reality. Companies have worked for years honing best practices for taking raw milkweed fluff through cleaning, drying, and fiber alignment steps to transform fuzzy floss into outdoor-ready filling. Advancements in the coming decade will further improve integration potential across diverse textile products, opening doors for milkweed clothing insulation in everything from t-shirts to winter boots.

Okay, need to figure out what kind of night-hiking gears and if Zarya needs a parka (or fleece jacket) and a sleeping bag. Night-hiking because it can get +30°C or +40°C during the most extreme heat-waves. The Great Divide Trail Association volunteers recommend preparing for -5°C, and those who do SAR recommends -7°C; and folks who do gear reviews recommend -12°C because some sleeping bag manufacturers often conflate "comfort rating" with "safety limit".
The thing is that I've always gotten away with -1°C quilt, and that product was from a company who wasn't always honest about how the bags are rated, which technically should have been rated for 5°C. What concerns me is Zarya's lineages are from eastern Poland, Belarus and Moscow region. Pavel's ancestry came from Kazakhstan and the Far East, with Kazyr's breeder being from Khabarovsk. And there's a bit of a concern West Siberian Laika bred by recreational hunters [PDF, 910 kb, archived] can only tolerate -20°C in contrast with dogs bred by industrial hunters which are expected to still perform in -40 below and thus East Siberian Laika are recommended instead. And Pavel seems to be able to cope with Alberta's extremes of hot summers and bitter cold winters.
It's easy to say "well, it's a hunting spitz from Russia" and not think about any of this. Certainly did not think about any of this about Pavel's genetics. But the days have been getting hotter compared to nine years ago. And I am not really sure if a dog which can be acclimated to deep winters can cope with sudden temperature changes which are unpredictable on a day to day basis.
Maybe I am thinking too much.

What is a Starter jacket?
A Starter jacket is a type of sports jacket that was popularized in the 1980s and 1990s. It was originally designed as a team jacket for American football, baseball, and basketball teams, but it quickly became a fashion statement and was worn by fans and non-fans alike.
Tumblr media
Starter jackets were known for their high-quality construction and distinctive design, which featured team logos and colors. They were typically made of a durable nylon shell with a quilted lining, and often had snap closures, ribbed cuffs and hem, and a high collar.
The popularity of Starter jackets peaked in the early 1990s, and they became a staple of hip-hop and urban fashion. However, their popularity declined in the late 1990s and they became less fashionable. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in Starter jackets, and they have become popular again among collectors and fans of vintage clothing.
When did Starter go out of business?
Starter did not go out of business, but it has gone through several changes in ownership and business focus over the years.
Starter was founded in 1971 as a manufacturer of athletic uniforms and began producing Starter jackets for professional sports teams in the 1980s. In 1992, the company was acquired by Nike, Inc., but Nike sold the Starter brand to Iconix Brand Group in 2007.
In 2016, Starter was acquired by the apparel company G-III Apparel Group, Ltd., which has since focused on expanding the brand beyond jackets and into other categories such as activewear, hats, and accessories. Today, Starter products are sold in major retailers such as Walmart, Amazon, and Foot Locker, among others.
Starter Winter Jacket;
Starter winter jackets are a type of insulated jacket that is designed to keep you warm during cold weather. These jackets are typically made with a durable outer shell and a thick layer of insulation inside.
Starter winter jackets come in a variety of styles, including parkas, puffer jackets, and quilted jackets. They often feature a high collar and a hood to protect your head and neck from the cold, and may have adjustable cuffs and a hem to keep out drafts.
Starter winter jackets are known for their quality construction and attention to detail. They may have a variety of features such as multiple pockets, reflective accents for visibility in low-light conditions, and water-resistant or waterproof materials to protect against rain and snow.
Starter winter jackets are available in a range of sizes and colors to suit different tastes and preferences. They are a popular choice for outdoor activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and hiking, as well as everyday wear during the winter months.
Starter Jacket 80s;
Starter jackets were first introduced in the 1970s, but it was during the 1980s that they really gained popularity and became a cultural phenomenon. The 1980s were a time of great change in the world of sports, with the rise of superstar athletes like Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, and Wayne Gretzky, and the increased visibility of sports on television. This helped to propel the Starter brand to new heights, as athletes and fans alike began to wear the brand's iconic jackets.
Starter jackets from the 1980s were typically made from durable nylon or satin materials, and featured bold designs and team logos. They often had snap button closures, as well as knit cuffs, collars, and waistbands. Some of the most popular Starter jacket designs from the 1980s featured the logos of popular sports teams like the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, and New York Yankees.
Today, vintage Starter jackets from the 1980s are highly sought after by collectors and fans of retro fashion. They are considered a symbol of sports and pop culture from that era, and are often seen as a status symbol among those who appreciate the style and history of the brand.
Starter Jacket 90s;
Starter jackets were particularly popular in the 1990s, and they became a cultural phenomenon in both sports and fashion. They were often worn by fans of professional sports teams, as well as by hip-hop artists and other celebrities.
Starter jackets 90s typically featured the team colors and logos of popular sports teams such as the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Yankees, and Dallas Cowboys, among others. They were often made of high-quality nylon with a quilted lining, and featured snap closures, ribbed cuffs and hem, and a high collar.
Starter jackets from the 1990s were also known for their distinctive design, which often included large logos and bold graphics. They were seen as a symbol of status and fandom, and were often worn as a statement piece with other urban fashion staples such as baggy jeans, Timberland boots, and baseball caps.
While Starter jackets fell out of fashion in the early 2000s, they have since experienced a resurgence of interest among vintage clothing collectors and fans of retro fashion. Today, 1990s Starter jackets are considered a coveted and nostalgic piece of sports and fashion history.

What do they put in each other's stockings during space Christmas? Favorite place to make out? Which one is very skilled at sneaky public ass-grabbing? Who has a secret folder full of pictures of the other on their phone? Favorite kind of kisses? Do they make their bed, and are they fancy-duvet-accent-blanket-decorative-throw-pillows people, or are they sheets-don't-match-two-pillows-and-ancient-quilt people? Who wears a light jacket, and who wears a parka, two hats, a scarf, and mittens?
@organanation I LOVE YOU FOR THIS.
OK so for Space ChristmasTM, Leia usually puts a mix of very practical things and utterly absurd things in Han’s stocking: his preferred deodorant, his favorite gum, those little hangy air fresheners shaped like pine tees that make your car smell nice for the Falcon’s cockpit, etc, but then also like, crazy corellian novelty candy that tastes like chocolate chili peppers, candycane lip balm (“Your lips are chapped, Han!”) and like a little mini tube of some lavish hand salve that smells vaguely of spruce for his dry, calloused, work roughened and wind cracked hands, and like several little nips of special variety whiskeys (“a nip of hundred year old corellian reserve black cherry whiskey? Thanks Sweetheart…”), a tiny stuffed Falcon to go on the Falcon (“I thought you might like a mascot,” she’d smirk), a customized keychain that says “I found love on Hoth,” etc.
Han’s stocking gifts are all intensely practical and the result of concentrated observation: a new sleek and professional yet entirely functional screen protector and case set for her comm, a little holo-cube the size of dice for her desk that syncs to her comm and projects the date, time, tracks her schedule and can be set to give vocal reminders of upcoming meetings or appointments, glows a warm green if Han is comming her, etc, a box of no-slip hair pins because she’d been running low, a little bottle of alderaanian jasmine-scented aroma therapy oil (“Not manufactured on Alderaan, Sweetheart, I couldn’t find any that’d been exported from before… but the company is alderaanian owned, I checked), her favorite chocolates, a little flashlight for her speeder, little tissue packets because her eyes water and her nose runs in the cold, a sturdy new durasteel comb because hers is missing teeth or a small vibroblade to keep in her purse because her old standard-issue one is notched and rusted, personal sized pods of her favorite kaffe, things of that nature.
Make out spot of choice: either their bed or their couch or their bunk on the Falcon… basically anywhere comfortable, private, and someplace they can lie down ;)
Ok so I am tempted to say neither because I don’t think they would be grabbing butts in public if there were the chance of being caught by other people because I think certain types of physical affection they’d want to keep private, but in instances where there was no chance of anyone else noticing, I’d say that both are sneaky ass-grabbers because it is a competition/retaliation type situation. Oh, you thought you were so sly tapping my bum last week when you followed me out of the speeder? Well now here we are out to dinner and yes I totally just brushed your ass when you scooted past me to head to the fresher and yes it is payback and one upping you but also damn your ass is amazing and I love it.
Definitely Leia has pics of Han. And it’s like, Han sleeping in a hilarious position. Han’s brow furrowed with concentration as he tried to wrap Luke’s oddly shaped gift (a gift basket—“hey! ‘S not a gift basket, Highnessness.” “It’s a metal container with lots of coordinated gifts in it, Han.” “‘S not a gift basket. I’d know if it was.”—that Han had personally put together full of tools and products for cleaning, repairing, and fine-tuning Luke’s lightsaber), pictures of Han cooking, pictures of the two of them together, one of him in the mirror shaving that she adores.
Favorite kind of kisses is tough. I guess the super loving, most tender kisses jam packed with *significance* are their favorite, but they love all their kisses. The natural, second-nature, domestic and casual kisses that are their good morning pecks or the quick smooches when they leave for or get home from work. The lingering, grazing kisses that are teasing, thrilling promises of more. Their deep, passionate and hungry kisses when they’re getting hot and heavy. The reverent, near-awed kisses in their more emotionally intimate moments. Kisses that they laugh/smile through. They treasure them all.
Yes they make their bed. I actually don’t headcanon Han to be super messy. His things in his work spaces might sometimes be in what seems a chaotic disarray to others but which is in fact an organized and deliberate system to Han and he knows exactly where everything in, and as an extension of that and of his time in the imperial navy and his childhood where half the time he didn’t even have a bed to make, I think Han makes his bed every day, and Leia I think just likes the feeling of sliding into crisp made sheets at night and is in general very neat and tidy. Their pillows and blankets are a happy medium: entirely practical, comfortable, and warm—Han is not one to sacrifice functionality for appearance, and though raised in a palace Leia’s taste is elegant but simple, so their bedding is crisp, fresh, soft but sophisticated and neither masculine nor feminine, and they have a few throw pillows that are both cohesive with the decor of their bedroom as well as necessary for propping themselves up in bed.
Han definitely wears the jacket with little else because he grew up with nothing and is used to not having enough layers or a thick enough coat or a scarf/gloves to keep him warm, so he has a higher tolerance for the cold. He doesn’t turn his nose up at those things though and will gladly put on gloves or a scarf if it’s truly frigid. Leia bundles up partly because she’s miniature (“you ain’t got any insulation on you, princess. No blubber to keep you warm.”) and is always cold anyways. It’s not that she’s incapable of toughing it out if she needs to—she never once complained on Echo Base and considers herself to be fairly resilient—but why would she endure cold fingers when she could just put on gloves? Plus Han gets all fretful and exasperated if she ever considers skimping on the cold weather gear (“you’re not exactly dressed for the elements either, hot shot!” “Yeah ‘cause *I’m* corellian, princess.
