Hilt of the Saber of Emperor Huáng Tàijí (皇太極的刀)
The fittings for Huáng tàijí 's saber are typical open work for the early Qing period, with the guard being a rounded squared with a double rim. This second rim of this example appears have been left as polish steel instead of gilt as the other areas of the fittings are. The twin dragons contending for the pearl of wisdom is a very standard design for this period, though later examples during the reign of Qianlong are generally more complicated with a larger number of intertwining vines. For more about the Huáng tàijí emperor, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Taiji
