Say hi to Manfred! I made him as a birthday present to my dear friend @tiiracotta, who's a big Dragon Age fan.
I had a blast working all the little details on the 40cm tall skeleton base I got in a Halloween clearance sale. All the other materials came from my stash, including the eyes, which were originally part of my prop sword sheath for my cosplay of Kusuriuri from Mononoke. The ornaments have been falling off through the years, so I recently replaced a few, and it was by noticing how similar the green crystals are to Manfred's eyes that I had the idea to make the whole doll.
I've always loved puppets, dolls and miniatures, so I hope I can make more projects like this in the future!

Hijikata Toshizo's favorite Ryuteki flute
Size (horizontal): 40cm
Toshizo's favorite flute, a Ryuteki (龍笛), which has been handed down in the Sato Hikogoro family. It's said that Hikogoro and Toshizo's older brother, Tamejiro, enjoyed joruri (traditional Japanese puppet theater), and it can be surmised that Toshizo was also influenced by those around him and became familiar with the flute. Found in a box full of hanging scrolls in 2007. In the Mainichi Newspaper in 1951, an article about Toshizo's favorite flute was found, along with a photo of the family head, Jin, holding a ryuteki.

I have to ask. What petticoats do you use? I love how your dresses poof so perfectly!
I used to use the classical puppets “escalation of violence” petticoat (lol) but I bought it when their pettis started to dip in quality and it started to disintegrate after not too long :( For most of my coords I use the Me Likes Tea Classy A-Line petti with 4 layers of hard tulle (link here). It’s super poofy and stays full all day, the only issue I have with it is the length, because I didn’t opt to add any extra. I’d rec getting 45cm over the default 40cm. I usually wear mine at my hips to achieve the right length.

Collaboration - Set Construction Update
Since working out the sizeing of our characters between myself and Maddy I have reconsidered the background set. Obviously as mentioned in my last post, the size of the set will be 1 metre width, 70cm height and 40cm outwards so that the world looks threatening for our characters. the question now is how this should be made.
Since the last project I used foam board, I want to try and use a different material at the very least to expand my use of materials. Peter once mentioned Sundella board, a type of board that’s strong enough to support weight and allows puppets to be pinned on it. Seeing as I’ve never worked with that material I want to try and use it. After talking to the 3d Technicians about it, they do have some in stock measuring in at 2.4 meters by 1.2 meters. This is enough and since we can use it and have the permission by the 3d Technicians and Peter himself, this is what we shall use for the pavement and the road seeing as Snails and Pigeons will most likely be pinned on the board.
The brick wall requires more thought. My original thought was Plywood but that may not bet strong enough and would give a wooden texture that is obviously can’t be present for a brick wall. The next option would be MDF and also checking the 3D workshop they can order that in for £7.70. What I need to do in the next few days is to draw up a technical drawing of the background set to start production on the background set.

Model Making 2.0
Today we were creating the armature for our puppets, we began by creating sketches of our desired designs and then measuring out the armature within. Ensuring we have the correct length of wire required. I drew on top of the image, and then used a ruler afterwards to add it all together. My initial wire length came to 40cm.
We made sure to tie the wires around each-other to improve its strength. I made a mistake in my first attempt, I assumed that I could cut out each limb and tie them around each other individually. This wasn't the case (see the left image) so I then redid it, taking into consideration the amount of wire I am using, and making sure to use it all to its most potential. tying the arms around the torso, and likewise with the legs. I liked how the second attempt turned out. It was really for milliput, to help add further support to the wire. Afterwards we left them out to dry.

Bursa Karagoz Karagöz & Hacivat is a Turkish shadow play taking its name from its main character Karagöz. The origin of the shadow plays is accepted as southeastern part of Asia around Java. Turkish traveler Evliya Çelebi says that the play was first performed at the Ottoman palaces in the late 14th century. Some others say that this play came into Anatoliaafter Yavuz Sultan Selim, who had conquered Egypt in 1517, had brought the shadow play artists to his court. According to a legend, they were working as construction workers in a mosque in Bursa. Although their satiric jokes entertained other workers it also held up the building of the mosque by their constant joking together. As a result it made the sultan very angry and anxious about whether Karagoz and Hacivat could encourage rebellion in others, so they were executed. The construction of the mosque was completed without them, but their comrades did not forget them and kept their jokes alive, telling them over and over. In time, the adventures of Karagoz and Hacivat gained a new dimension and the traditional Turkish shadow puppet theatre was born. Their monumental tomb stands in Bursa today. Karagoz & Hacivat was the most enjoyed entertainment of the Ottoman period and was widely performed for the public and in private houses between the 17th and 19th centuries especially during Ramadan, and at circumcisions, feast festivals, coffee houses and even in gardens. Karagöz play is played depending on the talent of an artist. Moving the design on curtain, voicing them, dialects or imitations are all made by the artist. The subjects of Karagöz plays are funny elements with double meanings, exaggerations, verbal plays, and imitating accents. There is always satire and irony. These puppets with jointed limbs are 35-40cm sized and they are generally made from the skin of camel or cows. The skins are made semi-transparent and painted with Indian ink or root paints. Then they are embroidered with sharp painted blades and the pieces are tied with ropes. This is truly an art. The white curtain on which Karagöz is played is named as ayna (mirror), and the light behind it as sema (candle light). There is just one puppeteer, known as hayali (imaginary), assisted by an apprentice, who installs the curtain and brings the puppets in order of appearance. The main characters of the play are of course Karagoz and Hacivat. Karagoz represents the public morals and common sense, the ordinary man in the street, and is straightforward and reliable. He is almost illiterate; usually unemployed and embarks on money earning projects that never work. He is often kind of rude. You can recognize him by his turban, his bald head and his black beard. His left arm is longer than the other one. His friend Hacivat instead is the opposite of him; he is educated in a Moslemtheology school, speaks Ottoman Turkish and uses poetical and literary language. He's very clever as well. Today a limited number of artists continue the studies related to the art of Hacivat & Karagoz and they're conducted by the Presidency of Turkey National Center of International Puppet and Shadow Play Union (UNIMA) and the Ministry of Culture. Puppetry and 1968 - Flatpack film Festival
( 13th feb )
When coming in to this session we had a strong plan of what was going on which gave us a huge advantage on other groups who still were unsure of a lot of what they were doing still. Also I feel it was strengthened by the fact that we have all bonded very quickly and work very well together so far, keeping positive and always talking.
Jada came in with a Martin Luther king puppet which she did over the weekend I feel the was effective (as we hadn't planned this) to show us what she can do and they kind of style .Having this also gave us a basis and a plat form to work from with -
movement
shadow
depth
style details
With us as a group knowing that this will clearly be a key part for Jada we new she had to be in charge of making any other martinis for the multiple scenes in which he features in. Additionally with in this session as u can see with the images above we set up a premed stand uni had to experiment and test what shadow puppetry was like as we had never tried it before. Doing this really made us realise the scale in which we would like to work with for the filming and the placement / movement of the puppets with the lighting , this showed that we needed the puppet quite far forward cause if not it blurs. From this we chose to limit our puppet frame filming area to a rectangle of 40cm high and 58cm wide , doing this helped us with scaling and sizing our puppets to an area meaning to could create them precisely.
SISO -
Making sure we get in there booking equipment is key as we have the rest of the university with access and we new that was better to get in there and making sure we having everything we need is key. We even went up and double checked with hire and loans what would be best and what would they suggest to use for the kind of outcome we r creating and they were very helpful with there advice.
