Went into the stable - from 5 35/60 to 7 10/60 looking the bureau drawers (in the little sitting room) and burning papers - these drawers will still take me another whole day - what folly thus to accumulate useless papers - Take care that I do not do this myself - Sealed, and took down for the post my letter to 'Miss Mc.Lean [Maclean] of Coll, 15 Hill Street Edinburgh' (I always write Maclean) and began to dress at 7 20/60 went out at 8 25/60 -
Went to William Keighley and his son William cutting the wood hedge in Mitholm holm - Mr. James Briggs came across wanting to see me about the footpath my father had asked him to view for the purpose of diverting - shewed him (the new footpath across the Dolt) what my father meant - expressed my hope that he had given up the thought - it would be unhandsome to the people, and if they were not satisfied (supposing my father should alter it for the present) I would turn it back again to where it now is - Mr. Briggs all for not changing the present line - asked him to come to the house, and have a glass of wine - he could not was going to Kirklees - but should be happy to do anything he could for me - the taxes being almost done with, he was quite at liberty now - could spare me a day or 2, any time It struck me, he was perhaps making a delicate push for the stewardship -
Thomas Pearson spoke to me about having a shed built at Pumphill - said I should do as little as possible, but he must pay 1/6 poundage for whatever was laid out - but I should soon appoint a steward, and then he might look after these matters - I had before been talking to William Keighley on this subject - he recommended Mr. James Briggs, but young William K- [Keighley] agree that Mitchell would understand the business better - was more accustomed to it - Came in at 10 - Letter 3 pages the ends and under the seal from M- [Mariana] (Scarbro')

Went down to breakfast at 11 20/60 - read my aunt the whole of M-'s [Mariana's] letter (except a few passages respecting Mrs. M- [Milne]) and the whole of my own in answer - sent it to 'Mrs. Lawton Dr. Belcombe's King Street Scarborough') at about 12 1/2 - came upstairs at 12, and wrote all the above of today which took me till 12 3/4 - came downstairs at 1 - my aunt and I looking over, assorting, and burning papers out of the bureau drawers - my father and Marian came at 4 -
Went out at 4 20/60 to speak to William Keighley - took Marian with me along the new walk, and new footpath, across the Dolt up Lower brea wood - She saw all these improvements for the 1st time - said the walk was very pretty - she should not know the fields again - It was much for her to say - took her into Upper brea lane to look down upon my purchase of Mr. Carr - she is now for it, and wonders not that I have made up my mind to pay so dearly for it -
Came in at 5 50/60 - staid talking to my father till 6, when they went home to tea, and to dress for dinner - Dinner at 6 20/60 - tea and coffee at 8 1/4 - Looking over and burning papers out of the book cupboards - Finish day, tho' windy, and coldish and occasionally threatening rain which, however, blew off - Barometer 1/3 degree below changeable Fahrenheit 52掳 at 9 55/60 p.m. at which hour came up to bed - 聽
