The war against public employees must stop

“Those 800,000 people need to find real jobs.”

That is the sentence that I heard uttered in a discussion about the ongoing government shutdown. No matter what you think about the shutdown, the reasons behind it, the federal government as a whole or which party is “right” (if either), this perception war against public employees needs to stop.

For some reason, public employees oftentimes don’t receive respect and are unfairly lumped together and discriminated against as a group. We’ve all seen the headlines. There have been government employees who have cheated the system, stole from taxpayers, not applied themselves and shamed their families and their employer. Every single one of them was absolutely wrong and committed a crime. But to judge every government employee who is out there working hard to bolster their community’s growth is unfair and, quite frankly, ignorant.

As a member of the village board of trustees in Whitney Point, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know a number of people who work for the government. Public works teams, office workers, contractors, auditors, elected officials and the like. By and large, all of them have one thing in common: They want to get the job done to the best of their ability. We don’t always agree on the best way to do things, but the core idea that drives most of us is the same: We believe in serving the public.

Public employees are just like you and me. They wake up, they go to work, they have families, they feel stress and they go to sleep when they’re tired. The notion that public employees are below those who work in the private sector is 100 percent nonsensical. Every sector of our economy is made up of a variety of people from different parts of the world, different parts of the country, different economic classes, different religions, different races — you get the idea. Some people are great at what they do and some aren’t. But every single one of them deserves basic human respect. That’s all anyone is asking for. To be treated equally and fairly.

While we certainly should, as a responsible government, continually evaluate employees’ performances and how valuable and necessary each and every government position is, the people working government jobs deserve to live free of condescension and stigmas. Government employees and public servants are all around us. They’re bus drivers, they’re firemen (and women), they’re life guards, they’re soldiers, they’re park rangers and they’re doctors working to cure cancer. It’s time to move past these false notions about government employees and instead appreciate their dedication to serving their country and society.
