1 through 7 April 2019
This week was all about mulching. We finished the dicotyledon order beds and the vegetable vitamin beds. Next week we will mulch the medicinal beds.
Wednesday, we invited Marcelo from Kew to give us a lesson in bromeliads and to show us the best way to mount them on bark. Everyone learned a lot and enjoyed the afternoon. Now we have a lot of work to do and the tropical corridor will look much better when it is done.
The weather turned cold this week and it even hailed one afternoon. I prefer working in snow or hail rather than rain.
I also received several compliments on my sewing of the netting, which was very nice to hear.
This week’s plant ident is about spring interest:
Boraginaceae Lithodora zahnii
Leguminaceae Cercis siliquastrum
Leguminaceae Sophora microphylla
Magnoliaceae Magnolia doltsopa
Oleaceae Forsythia x intermedia ‘Lynwood Variety’
Oleaceae Osmanthus decorus
Phytolaceae Ercilla volubilis
Rubiaceae Coprosma robusta
Ulmaceae Zelkova serrata
Winteraceae Drimys winteri
I’m in Paris this weekend visiting Lucien and seeing his newly refurbished flat.

Learn how to Arrange the Japanese Backyard: Choosing the Right Vegetation
Learn how to Arrange the Japanese Backyard: Choosing the Right Vegetation
What jumps in our brain when we listen to the word “Japanese garden”? A harmonious relationship, contemplation, nature… Many of us shoot for these things within our daily life. In the previous blog post we have currently learned the overall rules of the Japanese backyard composition plus discussed the must-haves – ponds, pathways, stone lanterns, gazebos. Yet what’s the garden with no plants?
Really, the most complex thing regarding creating a Japan garden within moderate areas is the appropriate selection of vegetation. Let’s observe how to choose all of them correctly.
Firstly, keep in mind that it’s simpler to arrange the Japanese backyard on the the southern part of or south-eastern side . Plants should be not only frost-resistant, but also deciduous, ornamental plus non-bright. The particular starting point for your composition can be a few huge trees as much as 2 . 5 meters. Middle-size trees plus bushes possess a support perform: they defend the comfy nook through the outer globe. Don’t’ grow the trees and shrubs too near to each other: the particular distance in between trees plus bushes furthermore matters for that sense associated with contemplation within a Japanese backyard. The things all of us usually find in the wooden may act as accents: origins of trees and shrubs of uncommon shapes, mossy stumps plus stones .
You can hardly envision a Japan garden with no cherry bloom , or even sakura, thrown with beautiful little red flowers. Yet cherry flowers are warmth-loving and will not survive winter season frosts. That is why within cold areas they can be changed with a little Russian cashew (Prunus tenella) or a good ornamental plum .
Another traditional Japan garden grow is a dainty Japanese walnut , or even fullmoon walnut. It has beautiful leaves various colors according to the variety – from eco-friendly to crimson. Mature trees’ branches are extremely fragile and may break even through sleety snowfall. So , in case your climate is certainly unfavorable for any Japanese walnut, try a good elderberry , or dark elder. Naturally , the color selection of its simply leaves is not since rich because maple’s one particular, but its read-leaf subspecies appear gorgeous too. Besides, elderberry is undemanding – giving it which includes mineral manures just once per year will be sufficient.
When it comes to shrubbery, a nice options are cold-resistant kinds of rhododendrons . For instance, Rhododendron yakushimanum or even Rhododēndron brachycārpum, which can endure the temps as low as -30 degrees Grad.
Various other equally wonderful and undemanding shrubs would be the Japanese barberry and the Japan meadowsweet . The barberry is a great ornamental grow, which significantly retains the pre-defined form. As for the meadowsweet, it’s specifically valued for the numerous rosy-pink flowers.
Conifers are also made welcome in Japan gardens. You might pick up pines, firs, spruces and junipers – everything to your preference. The color can vary from green to gentle blue, as well as the size through tall in order to dwarf-like – choose what is more suitable for the soil kind.
Besides traditional trees plus bushes, the Japanese backyard may function bonsai vegetation . They may be especially appropriate for cool regions just like be effortlessly brought inside for the winter season.
