What You Need to Know About Harga Proton for Used and New Models
When considering purchasing a Proton vehicle in Malaysia, understanding the harga proton (price) for both new and used models is crucial. Proton, as one of the leading car manufacturers in Malaysia, offers a wide range of vehicles, from the popular Proton Saga to the new Proton s70, catering to various budgets and preferences. Whether you are eyeing a brand-new Proton s70 or exploring the second-hand market for savings, each option comes with its own set of considerations regarding pricing, value, and available features.
Buying a new Proton model such as the Proton s70 offers the advantage of having a brand-new vehicle with the latest features, a full warranty, and guaranteed condition. However, the price of a new Proton is influenced by various factors, including the model, features, and location.
Factors That Affect the Price of a New Proton
The harga proton for new models is typically more straightforward, but several factors still come into play when determining the final price:
Model and Variants: Proton offers several models, including the Proton s70, Proton X70, and Proton Iriz, each with different variants. The more premium the variant, the higher the price. For example, the Proton s70 might have multiple trim levels, such as a base model, mid-range, and high-end version, each priced differently depending on added features like leather seats, advanced safety systems, or larger alloy wheels.
Location: Prices can vary slightly depending on the location. Dealerships in urban areas like Kuala Lumpur might offer slightly higher prices due to higher operational costs, while smaller towns or rural dealerships may have more competitive pricing.
Promotions and Discounts: Proton frequently offers promotions and discounts during festive seasons like Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, and Merdeka Day. During these periods, the harga proton may drop significantly, and you might even receive additional benefits like free service packages, insurance coverage, or extended warranties for models like the Proton s70.
Financing Options: Proton provides in-house financing schemes with competitive interest rates for new vehicles. This makes buying a new Proton vehicle like the Proton s70 more accessible for many buyers by spreading the cost of the car over an extended period with flexible loan terms.
What Makes a New Proton Vehicle Worth the Price?
While new Proton models, such as the Proton s70, are typically more expensive than used ones, they come with several advantages. These include:
Full Warranty: When buying a new Proton, you get the assurance of a full warranty, usually lasting up to five years or more, depending on the model. This covers major repairs, reducing the long-term ownership costs.
Latest Technology and Features: Newer Proton models, including the Proton s70, come equipped with the latest technology and safety features, such as advanced infotainment systems, driver-assistance technologies, and modern styling updates that you may not find in older models.
If you're looking to save money, a used Proton car could be an attractive option. The harga proton for second-hand vehicles can be significantly lower than new ones, and with careful research, you can find a reliable and well-maintained used Proton, including models like the Proton s70, that offers excellent value for money.
What to Look for in a Used Proton Vehicle
When buying a used Proton, including the Proton s70, there are a few things to consider to ensure you're getting a good deal:
Condition and Mileage: The condition of a used Proton vehicle will heavily affect the harga proton. A well-maintained car with low mileage will generally fetch a higher price than a car that shows signs of wear and tear. Always ask for the vehicle's maintenance history to understand how well it has been taken care of.
Certified Pre-Owned Programs: Proton offers Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) programs, where used cars go through rigorous inspections and refurbishments. These cars usually come with warranties, ensuring peace of mind and a reliable used vehicle at a much lower cost than new ones. A Proton s70 in a CPO program might come close to the price of a new model but offer significant savings.
Market Demand and Depreciation: One of the reasons used Proton cars, including the Proton s70, are priced lower than new ones is due to depreciation. While this means you can buy a car at a fraction of the original price, you should consider that popular models may still hold their value better than others. Thus, a second-hand Proton s70 might cost you less, but it should still offer great features at an affordable price point.
Where to Find the Best Deals on Used Proton Cars
To find the best harga proton for used models, consider exploring:
Authorized Dealers: Many Proton dealerships offer used or certified pre-owned cars. These vehicles often come with warranties and have been checked for quality, ensuring you're buying a reliable car with fewer risks compared to buying from independent sellers.
Online Marketplaces: Websites like Carlist.my, Mudah.my, and others allow you to compare prices for used Proton models easily. While some listings might offer lower prices, always be cautious and inspect the car in person or get a trusted mechanic to evaluate its condition before finalizing the deal.
Private Sellers and Auctions: You might find even lower prices from private sellers or at car auctions. However, purchasing from these sources carries more risk, so it's important to inspect the vehicle thoroughly and ensure there are no hidden issues that could lead to higher costs down the line.
Choosing a used Proton can be a smart financial decision, as it offers lower upfront costs while still providing the performance and reliability associated with the Proton brand. Even for a model like the Proton s70, which might be relatively new, buying used can offer significant savings.
Benefits of Buying a Used Proton Car
Lower Depreciation: New cars depreciate quickly in the first few years, but a used Proton vehicle will have already gone through that steep drop in value, meaning you won't lose as much money over time.
Affordable Maintenance Costs: When you buy a used Proton, the initial cost savings often translate into lower monthly payments or lower financing requirements. This can make your overall ownership experience more affordable, even with additional maintenance costs.
Reliable and Tested: Proton vehicles, including the Proton s70, have a reputation for being reliable. Many used Proton cars are still in excellent condition and provide the same durability as new models but at a much more affordable price.
Conclusion:
Whether you're opting for a brand-new Proton s70 with all the latest features and a full warranty, or you choose a used Proton vehicle that offers value and savings, understanding the harga proton for both options is essential. New Proton models offer modern technology and warranties, while used Proton cars, including the Proton s70, present a more budget-friendly alternative with potential for long-term value. By considering factors such as financing, condition, and market trends, you can make an informed decision that fits both your needs and budget.

Written by Iris Lee Malaysians often complain of high car prices in the country, due to the excise duty. It was reported that KL is the fifth most expensive city to buy a new mid-size car compared to 54 other cities across the globe. However, according to the same report we come in as the fourth cheapest when it comes to petrol prices. Despite the high cost of car, Malaysians seem to be on a roll when it comes to car ownership as the number of Malaysians using vehicles is projected to increase 1.4 times to 31 million by 2030. If you are looking to buy a car soon, it would be wise to do your research on how much does a car exactly cost. The cost of car ownership is not as simple as paying for your car loan, but it also involves the cost of day-to-day running of your car. The total cost goes beyond its purchase price when you consider out-of-pocket expenses like petrol and insurance, plus the car’s loss in value over time (depreciation). Let’s examine the true cost of owning a Proton Persona 1.6 CVT Executive at RM54,600 for five years. 1. Financing Unless you started saving the day you were born just to buy a brand new Proton Persona, chances are you will have to get a hire purchase loan to afford a car in Malaysia. If you go the usual route, you will have to fork out 10% of the car price, and the rest of the 90% will be financed. Here is how much you will have to pay in interest over a five-year tenure: Interest rate: 3% Tenure: 5 years Monthly Installment: RM941.85 Total interest over loan tenure: RM7371.00 *Calculation is based on Proton car loan calculator With the maximum hire purchase loan tenure at nine years, car buyers who choose the longer loan tenure will have to fork out more on financing over time. Find out how much your will be paying in interest on a longer loan tenure. 2. Depreciation Depreciation is one of the highest costs in owning a car. It is how well the vehicle holds its value over time. This is particularly important if you keep the car for less than five years as the depreciation rate is always higher in the initial years of ownership. The moment you receive the keys from the car dealer, you’ve already lost thousands of ringgit, and this crazy phenomenon is known as depreciation. To illustrate how much depreciation will cost you for a five-year-old Proton Persona: Calculation of depreciation of a Proton Persona Price of a brand new car: RM54,600 Depreciation rate: 60% Depreciation value: RM32,760 Value of a 5-year old Proton Persona: RM21,840 Factors that can accelerate the depreciation rate of a car are the mileage, brand, and history of reliability, degree of wear and tear, modifications and who you sell your car to (selling your car to a car dealer will lower your selling price further). 3. Petrol consumption Surprisingly, petrol is the second highest cost of vehicle ownership. Choosing a car with good rated economy may be able to help you lower this cost. A Persona 1.6 CVT boasted a fuel consumption of 6.1 litres per 100 km. Assuming an average of 1,000 km a month, here is how much you are estimated to pay for petrol over five years. Petrol consumption over five years RON95 petrol price: RM1.59/litre* Total mileage: 1,000km x 12 months x 5 years = 60,000km Total petrol consumption: 60,000km ÷ 100km x 6.1 litre = 3,660 litres = RM5,819.40 *Calculation is based on the current petrol price and will fluctuate according to petrol price. 4. Maintenance and repair The key to keeping vehicles running well, and repair cost low down the road of car ownership is to do routine maintenance. Though many new cars today comes with a five-year warranty, the manufacturer warranty usually does not cover service cost. The general service maintenance schedule for a Proton Persona is as follows: Distance and time Maintenance cost 1,000km / 1 month RM121.09 10,000km / 6 months RM121.09 20,000km / 12 months RM136.86 30,000km / 18 months RM319.31 40,000km / 24 months RM267.52 50,000km / 30 months RM191.05 60,000km / 36 months RM743.41 70,000km / 42 months RM191.05 80,000km / 48 months RM267.52 90,000km / 54 months RM383.40 100,000km / 60 months RM307.61 TOTAL RM3049.91 Some of the common maintenance routine involves engine oil, engine oil filter, drain plug gasket, spark plugs, and air filter while the relatively uncommon ones involve fuel filter, transmission oil and FEAD Belt. As the Proton Persona comes with a five-year warranty, you can save some money on repairs, assuming that the warranty covers the repairs you require. However, to be on the safe side, the general rule of thumb is to allocate 1% of your car value every year for maintenance purpose, and to have an emergency fund of 10% of your car value for unexpected servicing cost. 5. Road Tax Depending on where the car was bought (Peninsular or East Malaysia), type of vehicle ownership (private or company) and engine capacity, road tax is one mandatory cost that you are unable to escape from. For a Persona of 1.6cc in Peninsular Malaysia, the road tax rate is RM90.00 a year. That amounts to RM450 over five years. 6. Insurance Another annual cost of owning a car is motor insurance premium. This can be significantly higher than your road tax cost as it depends on the value of your car. You can use our car insurance calculator to find out your car insurance premium. Here’s the estimate of the annual motor insurance premium for a Persona CVT: Year Car value Premium 1 RM54,600 RM1,699.10 2 RM44,226 RM1,429.38 3 RM31,668 RM1,102.87 4 RM26,754 RM975.10 5 RM21,840 RM847.34 Total Premium Paid RM6,053.79 * The above calculation is based on comprehensive motor insurance coverage, not inclusive of windshield cover or no claim discount (NCD). Those who stay or commute in flood-prone areas may also want to opt for flood coverage as well. 7. Parking and toll Unfortunately, the cost of vehicle ownership does not end here. There are still other miscellaneous costs that may look insignificant, but can add up to quite a sum. Here are some hidden costs that you may have overlooked. If you are unfortunate enough to work in the city centre, be prepared to fork out at least RM200 a month for a parking bay. This does not include the various parking fees we pay when we go for meetings and shopping. Let’s assume a city driver spend about RM230 a month on parking alone. There are still toll payments to consider. Almost every major highway in the Klang Valley has a toll booth. You can easily pay at least RM80 a month in toll, if you happen to drive pass a tolled road to work every day. In five years? That will come up to RM13,800 in parking fees and RM4,800 in toll! That’s a cool RM18,600 out of your pocket in five years. Do bear in mind that the parking and toll costs can vary greatly depending on where you are located and your driving habits. Someone who don’t commute to the city centre, and lucky enough to get free parking at work, may see a very low cost in this category. How much would you be paying? Purchase price RM54,600.00 Loan/financing interest RM7371.00 Petrol costs RM5,819.40 Maintenance RM3,049.91 Road tax RM450.00 Insurance RM6,053.79 Parking and toll RM18,600.00 Total RM95,944.10 This means a car costs RM95,944.10 to own over five years! Though it’s easy to be a car owner in Malaysia, it is a much bigger investment than people expect. While it offers a lot of freedom of transportation, this could turn into a major cost sink for those who are unprepared to shoulder the burden – and we haven’t even begun to talk about things breaking down. With the MRT and more LRT lines coming up, let’s hope having a car becomes less of a necessity for Malaysians. Find out how you can save money on petrol by answering this simple quiz.
