Rights as a student of the Northern Caribbean University
As a university student I can say without bias and with many others to testify, university students rights are sometimes disregarded by stakeholders, persons in authority and sometimes the student themselves. Rights stated by the Education Regulations 1980 like the right to elect a student representatives to represent the student body on the board are considered but the voices of these representatives are sometimes stifled due to power. However in Jamaica, the Jamaicans for justice (JFJ) did a survey which revealed that 71% of student representatives voted freely on school board decisions while 29% faced restrictions on their right to vote due to concerning and potentially unlawful restrictions. Students are obligated rights such as ;
•Safety- This is a concern and every student has right to be in a secure environment. There should be no physical or mental harassment. Moreover, the classrooms should be free of conflicts, bullying and physical fights even among the students.  Students should be provided counselling sessions as well as training to be able to tackle such situations in school.
•Proper guidance – School students are at risk of being affected by bad influence and they need to be guided properly to help them. It is the right of every student to get proper guidance and during school; they can get the best advice from their teachers.
•Regular feedback – Students should be informed about their academic as well as extracurricular progress by their teacher on regular basis. This helps students to improve in the weaker areas. The feedback should not only be about the subjects mentioned on the report card but also about their behavioural, moral values and uprightness.
•Leadership and Team participation – Students should be given equal rights to participate in activities at school, be it sports, academics, extracurricular. These activities will impart knowledge and skills that are practical in nature like motivational skills, interpersonal skills, logical and cognitive ability etc.

The issue of sexual harassment should never be taken lightly. Victims of the said abuse have been encouraged to speak up against perpetrators. However, not much is being done about it, especially in Philippine schools. Despite this, we still push for awareness on the issue and all its surrounding factors.
Welcome to part 1 of this series of posts where we tackle the prevalence of sexual harassment in Philippine schools.

One of our classmates who attended this school and witnessed the harassment first hand reached out to us. Just wanting us to help shine light on this injustice. The following footage has been exclusively obtained by The Daily News. The footage you’re about to see is from the class containing students who note that Gebbia knowingly made advances towards some of them. This is their story. Let me be extremely clear... Educators - your responsibility is to protect our students. If you have “leadership” that is making light of the pandemic and endangering the lives of our students, it is your responsibility to speak up for them. #ProtectOurStudents #oklaed

Welcome to part 6 of our series wherein we provide our own insights about the given issue.
Though we propose self-defense as a solution, it must also be mentioned that the victim is never at fault for being harassed. These classes will not lessen the number of perpetrators, nor will it completely solve the issue of sexual harassment. More than just a single solution, we urge that young men also be taught to have a degree of respect towards all people as this is one of the main roots of the issue presented. Additionally, we push for a society where these classes are not necessary to be safe. Although being knowledgeable in self-defense is indeed crucial, it should go hand-in-hand with instilling respect in the youth.

Welcome to part 5 of our series wherein we propose a few measures that can be taken to tackle sexual harassment in Philippine schools.
In coming up with the solution, we realized that sexual harassment is a long-standing problem in many Catholic schools. Besides its prevention, it is important to tackle as well the culture that forms toxic masculinity, victim blaming, and the protection of harassers. Likewise, we understand that school authorities should have tackled the problem when it occurred instead of ignoring it (as they have these past years), and we condemn this practice. However, we were able to find research that girls in particular were able to defend themselves against attackers when they received such training. We then thought of how best to integrate this into schools, and that is through self-defense classes.
We also noted that there already exists committees in some schools that deal with the prevention of sexual harassment and helping victims (ex. ASHS Safe Spaces and LS Gender Hub). Nonetheless, we would like to propose further prevention through self-defense.
Since Catholic schools are conservative and thus hesitant to talk about sexual harassment issues and cases, we propose that adolescents be taught special self-defense classes during Physical Education. This will help students avoid being harassed as they would know how to protect themselves in situations where they might encounter sexual harassers. Before actual implementation, we suggest for there to be demo sessions and make any necessary improvements after.
Despite showing a conservative image, we encourage the schools to also hold special classes. Here, young students will be taught about the definition and types of sexual harassment, possible situations in which it can occur, and related issues like sexual grooming and consent. It is highly crucial that we teach people at a young age these issues to avoid harassment cases in the future.
Moreover, the guidance counselors can share reliable sources containing information on recognizing sexual harassment in certain environments (school, work, etc.) - as harassment is unpredictable and may occur anywhere, anytime. These articles also contain tips on how to protect yourself when such situations occur.
Through our proposal, self-defense classes can help alleviate the problem of sexual harassment by giving people the knowledge to help themselves. Likewise, teaching people to recognize the types and signs of sexual harassment can aid them in removing themselves from such a situation.

Welcome to part 4 of our series where we discuss the aspects as to why sexual harassment is still prevalent in Philippine schools.
With the Philippines being heavily influenced by Catholic ideals and values, the topic of sex and anything related to it are considered as taboo, and therefore not properly discussed in communities like that of at home and in school. Due to this, the opinions and statements of the Church greatly impact most Catholic schools in the Philippines, making it challenging to discuss the importance of sex education to students, as well as related issues, mainly being consent and sexual harassment.
Delving more into Catholic schools, sexual harassment is not properly recognized and cases are not investigated with utmost urgency. This results in harassers not being properly sanctioned in order to protect the image of the school, bringing about a culture of fear and hiding for those who have been victimized.

Welcome to part 3 of our series where we tackle the prevalence of sexual harassment in Philippine schools.
Considering the overly religious and conservative culture in the Philippines, and the mishandling of sexual harassment cases in Catholic schools, the group proposes a campaign that promotes the prevention of sexual harassment. This will be done through self-defense and mental training, as well as awareness classes to recognize it as it happens.

Welcome to part 2 of our series where we tackle the prevalence of sexual harassment in Philippine schools.
In June of 2020, a number of students from Philippine Catholic schools, many being all-girls, released their stories of having been sexually harassed by both teachers and fellow schoolmates. Many shared that this occurred in previous years, and that it is a common situation in their school. Though some cases were raised to school authorities, none of the victims were ever given an apology, nor were the harassers properly sanctioned or kicked out
