The UN General Assembly adopted a “historic” resolution demanding Israel to
• End its illegal occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip within 1 year
• Evacuate all settlers from these territories
• Return all land, assets & cultural property stolen since 1967
• Pay reparations to Palestinians for occupation damages
And requested:
• A register of damage to calculate reparations
• A mechanism to follow up on Israel’s breach of the prohibition on “racial segregation and apartheid”
• States to halt settlement imports + sanction Israel & those complicit
• Stressing that Israel’s breaches “seriously threaten” int’l peace & security
Votes:
✅ 124 in favor
❌ 14 against
🟡 43 abstentions
out of 193 members with the US among the few opposing it.
It was the first resolution by Palestine, a non-member observer state, after gaining new powers in May. Israel’s ambassador opposed the resolution heavily.
It aimed to enforce the ICJ’s July ruling. While non-binding, it reflects growing Israeli isolation and global will to bypass the US monopoly on Palestine.

Of weddings and other things....
Tumblr media
dad: oh bakit hindi ka pa bihis?
me: anong meron?
dad: wedding ni paul today...
me: ha akala ko bukas pa? puedeng pass nalang ako?
dad: magpakita na tayo ng wala ng masabi pa yung kabila.
given the chance, i would have stayed home, but dad insisted that we show up as a family. it's his way of reconciling with the other family after years of ignoring each other over a small property dispute. that is how my dad is, he is always the first one to reach out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
boy, i have to tell you that i am not used to big weddings. the last family wedding was December 2023 and it was a simple intimate one. but this wedding was ginastusan. and the invited guests and wedding sponsors are big time personalities. sobra we feel like we should be eating outside given we do not belong to this circle.
and speaking of guests, one of my aunts called my attention...
auntie: bakit ka nagdala ng pamaypay na ganyan?
me: auntie what's wrong po?
auntie points to my "Leni-Kiko" pink pamaypay and directs her face to the other table where First Lady Lisa Marcos was seated.
me: hindi ko naman alam na nandito sya (sabay tago ng pamaypay)
kuya: wala na sira na talaga pangalan naten sa kanila haha.
thankfully, saturday was spared from torrential rains. I was told that the mother of the bride offered hundreds of itlog at the Monasterio De Santa Clara in Katipunan, asking the nuns the nuns to intercede for good weather. it worked naman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the church rites, we went to the reception. thankfully it was within the New Manila area. yun lang kami yung unang dumating lol. so siempre at the risk of being called patay gutom my parents and siblings stayed in their vehicles while kuya and i decided to go out para mag jingle until the attendants saw us and offered cocktails...and being the hidden alcoholic in the family, i got my drinks, had refills and asked that drinks keep coming until the server decided to give us bottles lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and i ate a lot. i was hungry. breakfast was the last meal i had kasi. and the food was really good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and yung binalikan ko yung cheese saka jamon serrano (hello, bihira lang ako kumain nito lol) plus first time ko makakita ng madaming cakes from Costa Brava. of course, binalikan ko din.
Tumblr media
and finally, the dreaded part of having a group picture with the cousins. i mean we know each other naman but then we are not close so parang feeling ko lang just for the sake of celebrating this day, sige, kakalimutan ko na yung kaartehan ko. and besides, malay mo eto yung start na maging okay na din kami....

A few stories about the Tangerine Tyrant caught my eye today, and they all point to his increasing desperation - so I figured I’d go around the horn and celebrate his continuing dissipation.
First: Criminal Defendant and Adjudicated Rapist Donald Trump yesterday predicted a “bloodbath” if he didn’t get reelected, and the media quickly devolved into outlets condemning his use of violent rhetoric and others - Fox and Newsmax - concern trolling over how he was talking specifically about the automobile industry. So, whatever. If you’re interested in parsing the event along those lines, have at it - but I think there’s a more interesting, deeply indicative phenomenon just below the surface that speaks not just to Trump’s mentality but that of his whole bonkers cult.
If you’re looking for the atavistic pull of Donald Trump on his followers, it’s in his power to do whatever the hell he wants and face no consequences. NO ONE can tell him what to do. NO ONE can keep him from attacking whomever he wants. NO ONE can prevent him from sating his desires. NO ONE.
Now, we know that’s not true - as evidenced by his exile to Mar-a-Lago for the past three years, but it’s part of the mystique. In a lot of ways, it makes sense if you look at his cult following - people who are, by and large, deeply disempowered and enraged at a culture that is stripping away their traditional privileges and social entitlements. They WANT Trump to keep shitting the punch bowl as a sort of wish fulfillment of their own stifled rage. Maybe they can’t rape the woman they want to rape or kill the immigrants they hate for speaking Spanish or Hindi at the Gas-n-Sip – but they sure as hell can dream about it when Trump gives a cross-burner of a speech. That’s all standard form.
But what we saw last night - and in the fascist outrage-trolling today - was something new. It’s been creeping into the 2024 election cycle here and there, but yesterday, it entirely broke through, and it’s this: NOT EVEN TRUMP’S BRAIN IS ALLOWED TO CENSOR TRUMP’S MOUTH WHEN IT COMES TO RAGE AND ANGER.
Look, Trump KNOWS that using words like “bloodbath” is going to cost him non-MAGA voters. He knows that calling people “vermin” is going to hurt his chances of navigating the very narrow path ahead if he hopes to return to the White House. Yet, he can’t stop himself. Trump is unable to act in his own easily achieved best interest if it means not being a monster, and while it’s lamentable that he’s bringing such hatred to our national debate, I encourage him to keep it up.
You be you, Donald!
Every single time you let your id out of its box, it’s like sending America an unsolicited, mushroom-shaped dick-pic. Sure, your fans are going to love it, but the rest of us grossed the fuck out.
So, please! Rage on!
-----
Second:
Trump’s lawyers in the NYS civil fraud case settlement submitted a filing today that it is “a practical impossibility” for Trump to post a bond for the half-billion dollars he needs to cough up in order to appeal the decision. According to reports, he approached 30 different surety companies, and they all turned him down. Why they would do that might indicate what’s got him tuned to “bloodbath” and “vermin” levels of rage.
It might be a simple point, but it bears a paragraph of explanation.
Most folks who don’t work in the NYC real estate market – or any real estate market – might think, “Hey, he’s a rich guy. Why not just sell a few of those buildings he owns? They’ve gotta be worth a pretty penny.”
Or, alternatively, “Why won’t anyone take Trump Tower as collateral for a loan?”
The simple answer is he doesn’t really OWN any of that shit outright. It’s ALL mortgaged to the hilt. To get a clearer picture of this, let’s look at 40 Wall Street – one of Trump’s “prestige” properties.
The numbers are a bit hard to come by, but an hour of reading suggests that the building is presently worth about $200 million. Mind you, part of the fraud charges – now proven – included his valuation of the building in 2015 at over $750 million, but it’s just not worth that at all.
So, take the $200 million as a starting point and note that Trump’s mortgage on the property, according to a Bloomberg report in November of 2023, stands at $122 million. So, if Trump were to liquidate his stake in the property fully, he’d only net about $78 million – and that is BEFORE the capital gains taxes, NYS taxes, and NYC taxes on the sale. According to a few articles I’ve scanned this evening, that would be up to about 40% of his earnings. That means, even if he drops one of his most precious assets, he would only raise about $50 million.
He owes TEN TIMES that number by next week.
Play that out another round, and realize that if Trump tried to sell ten or twenty office buildings in NYC all at once, the price of ALL of them would plummet to fire-sale prices.
He’s fucked. Moreover, he knows it and is desperate to find a way out.
-----
This brings us to news item number three: The Return of Paul Manafort.
News leaked today that Trump is considering bringing convicted felon and former campaign manager Paul Manafort back into his 2024 bid for the White House. Manafort, primarily due to his complete lack of a moral center, would be a tremendous asset for Trump. He’s a solid political operative, but what he REALLY brings to the table is a direct line back to the Russian oligarchy and their money. That, obviously, is an enormous threat to national security, and I’ve got to hope that the intelligence services in DC and around the world will be on heightened alert for any covert – or overt – entreaties to Putin or his cronies for a loan. I’ve got to hope there are ways of making such entreaties known to the public through selective leaks if nothing else.
But that brings us back to observation number one.
Trump knows that going to Putin for help with his financial difficulties if it becomes known, would be a dagger to the heart for his chances of returning to the White House. Yet, if I’m right, he will be unable to stop himself when it comes to finding a fix for his hemorrhaging empire. His brain will tell him this is a terrible idea, but it won’t matter. NO ONE is allowed to stop Donald Trump from doing whatever the hell he wants to do – not even Donald Trump.
In 1776, James Otis, a thoughtful supporter of the Revolutionary War, noted about politics, “When the pot boils, the scum will rise.”
Trump is proving that to be true, even when there’s only one evil, arrogant, rapist bastard in the soup. He’s so screwed.
Love to you all.

Do you think you could have liked Adrien more if his assholish moments were on purpose?
On- hold up. Are you saying his shitty behavior is outside of his own control? Like all those times he leans in for a kiss on a girl who clearly doesn't like it or all those times he throws a tantrum and threatens to disown plagg cuz the girl he likes doesn't like him back? Or that time he was so angry because ladybug didn't get him when he wanted that he destroyed a ton of property.
Listen here's my flash rewrite of Adrian.
See he's like 14 right? And his mom is very dead. This is incredibly traumatizing, since no Doctor could ever figure out what was slowly killing her. After she finally disappears out of her sick bed, he resolves himself to become a doctor and find out what actually killed her.
This isn't what his father wants from him, as he wants him to inherit the family Business, aka the fashion company Gabriel. But as long as he is staying out of trouble and off the streets of Paris and is continuing to do his modeling for said business then Gabriel grits his teeth through this silly delusion that he has.
So he keeps him very busy doing things that he wants him to do. He wants him to learn a couple languages so he can do business internationally after all children are better at learning languages than adults are. Sure there's Chinese, but there's also English and Hindi and Even a little Spanish. He's got to stay fit and look good for the modeling career so he's got a sport to do. It's not the one Adrian would have chose, but it gets him away from the house for a bit and actually lets him talk to other kids, so he likes it enough.
However very occasionally on the way home from said practice he uses his puppy eyes to sneak off to the library and pick up a couple books that he stays up late reading. He's a little rebellious like that. It's a little thrilling, and each new book puts him a little closer to pre-med.
His father can't control him forever after all, he's only got four more years until he's a legal adult, and maybe by then his dad will respect him a little more. If he does everything right, if he does everything to make him happy, you know maybe. And there's no harm in being prepared.
Suddenly his father becomes incredibly distant. It's not like he wasn't before, but it's even more so now. He doesn't even see him at dinner sometimes. It's just him and the nanny... And as much as he likes him, he's not one for enticing conversation. See, Adrian is quite a social butterfly and he enjoys talking to people but he never is allowed to do so.
Flash forward, he finds his first little buddy in plagg, who finds his pleasant and sociable demeanor quite charming and hopes to corrupt him one day. So he encourages him to do something he's always wanted to do... Get out of the house. And so he does. Little escape. A little vacation. No one would notice because He didn't have anything to do and nobody needed his attention so... What's the harm in... You know, taking a bit of a walk right? Dang who does he bump into? Oh man maybe Marinette? Nino? School starts next week and they're excited to see him since they think he is a new kid, and old boy what an idea. How fun would school be? Being able to actually learn and talk to people? So now he has a new wish in his heart. And it's all thanks to his little kitty buddy.
He would ultimately be the same. Being very pleasant and nice. But instead of being oblivious, he's just destructed. He's got his nose in a book or he is failing to traverse a social situation because he's not very well socialized. In fact a lot of people don't really like Adrian that much. They think he's a little weird. It takes several seasons for people to start liking him. But Marinette knows better because she met him earlier and he she has bothered to get to know him. In fact they consider themselves friends. And I hate the stupid unable to talk to her crush joke because it destroys both characters and their development.
His dream to be a doctor would be a driving force for him throughout the series. The more he learns about magic The closer he gets to discovering the mystery of what happened to his mother. He eventually comes to the questioning realization that no amount of doctorly training or medical knowledge would have saved his mother and so he spirals into a depression.

Hello! Hope your week has been well. I’ve just watched the show for the first time but unfortunately my Hindi is a little weaker than I would like so I’m not sure if this has been covered on the show or maybe in your asks? I’m sorry if this is a repeat question. I was just wondering if we know about the Raizada family specifically, in terms of whether they’re meant to have generational wealth/is the house ancestral or if Arnav built it. Arnav is “self made” but I’m not sure whether we’re meant to understand the Raizadas as independently wealthy or if the wealth we see is all due to AR doing well as a company. For other Gul shows I’ve noticed class differences are shown thru dialect but Nani seems to be speaking the same dialect as the Guptas so is hard for me to tell. Thank you!
Hello there!
Welcome to Jalebi Weds Bluetooth <3 I love your ask!
I do think I have answered something regarding this but there's never been an in depth answer to this so I'm glad I can think about this!
LONG ANSWER ALERT
Regarding The Raizada's Wealth
Arnav comes from generational wealth from both sides of his family. The Maliks and the Raizadas are incredibly wealthy. I'd say the Raizadas wealth comes from textiles and land. There's nothing concrete here but in Anjali's party Mama-ji does refer to old clients and there seems to be discussion of land, mills in the little business conversations we have in the show.
We know Arnav and Anjali have no wealth from the Maliks' end as Arnav's uncle fraudulently claimed all assets after his brother's death and squandered that away. And I guess by the time Devyani (Nani) brought the kids to her place, the Raizadas were suffering financially as well.
The Raizadas were rich, rich enough to send both the kids - Akash and Arnav - abroad for education (I assume Akash went as well). Harvard is an expensive university - even if we consider Arnav and Akash got scholarship for their degrees.
So I think with the failing wealth of the Raizadas, Arnav probably set up his business idea early on - leaning into the textile background of the Raizadas - and capitalized on that by making a high end fashion brand. And we also know that Mami sold all her jewelry to back Arnav's idea. I'd assume he started thinking of this when he was 18-19. I also feel Arnav never had a childhood after the death of his parents and was very much invested in establishing financial security with the Raizadas ever since he was a teen.
Every memory Arnav brings up of childhood are of days before his parents died, even the ones with Nani and Akash and in the earlier episodes Akash often stated in subtle ways that Arnav grew up very quickly.
So, in the show, Arnav re-establishes the economic status of the family (the Raizadas have always maintained a social status, they never quite disappeared like the Maliks). Arnav only strengthens the social status even further.
Shantivan is a new house. I'd assume the previous Raizada properties were either as a guarantee for loans, sold off or are much smaller compared to what Arnav built for his family.
In the show it is stated several times that Shantivan is Arnav's house (that he bought it) and in lieu of that he is the pseudo head of the family. Which is why Arnav's approval matters so much. And it is also incredibly interesting to watch the struggle Arnav-Nani have at the beginning for she's morally the head of the house, but financially Arnav is.
Also one thing I firmly believe is right in the beginning of the show Arnav is riding on newly found success. He's almost like a young lion who has tasted his first blood. Unlike Shivaay from Ishqbaaz, Arnav's arrogance and fixation with money and status doesn't stem from generational pride and elitism. It stems from financial and social insecurity. His hatred towards conniving middle class people is a direct repercussion of the people he's had to deal with and his own uncle.
Yes, Arnav has never been poor to get to the streets.
But he has faced his assets being stripped away, his family giving up all their money for his education and business idea, and an insecurity over everyone's financial future.
No wonder he was pushed to ensure his family just doesn't get rich, but filthy rich for seven generations.
He is a self made man. Yes he had resources, contacts, backup - but let's simply say that if Arnav didn't exist then the Raizadas wouldn't be having the financial status they had today.
So yes, every sign of wealth we see today is due to Arnav and the empire he built. I think it's very clever how he incorporated his family's textile business.
It's a pity the show really didn't explore this part because it's fascinating! (And Arnav should've been 28 because 26 is an unachievable age for this! If he was a tech guy I'd get it!)
Coming to dialect, I think all the elders in the Raizada household have a strong Lucknowi/UP accent - which is similar to what all the Gupta elders have. While Anjali doesn't have an accent, her Hindi shows her to be very well educated and well versed with the language. She doesn't switch much to English and actually has an incredibly polished Hindi.
Arnav and Akash, Arnav especially, have a very 'returned from abroad' accent that speaks for itself. You know these kids didn't just study at an excellent private school, they definitely went abroad. However, their Hindi is clear enough for you to know that they were raised in India for a significant time.
Also you made an interesting observation about all the elders having similar accents regardless of status. And I think we could factor in what influences accent. I don't think the Raizadas interacted much with foreigners, and learned Hindi in Lucknow - hence the strong Lucknow/UP accent. Definitely they're well versed with English, but prefer not to use it. So since they're usually speaking Hindi - we see their accents. Mamiji tries really hard to speak English because of her fixation with status but we know it works quite the opposite!
Since they all speak Hindi and were very much in their Lucknowi roots, we can see a strong overlap between the way they speak and the Guptas!
The class difference is understandable in the difference of the younger generations' accents. There's hell and heaven difference between Arnav and Khushi's accents. Arnav's Hindi was originally much stronger in the show (in fact there was quite a bit of Urdu there), but he definitely doesn't have the fluency Khushi has (he struggles to read complicated words) whereas Khushi's English has a thick accent and she struggles to speak it fluently (I guess because she had none to speak that language with, you can notice her English get better as she spends time with Arnav because she absorbs a lot with him). Just through dialogues alone you can sense the difference in status between Arnav-Khushi.
However that's not the case with Akash and Payal. Akash has a stronger grip in Hindi and Payal has a stronger grip in English that makes it audio-wise impossible to understand their class difference. Which probably explains how and why their class difference didn't come into the way of them falling in love. It was so easy.
And the Raizadas and Guptas not having a dialect barrier explains why they gel together so well.
Also in other Gul shows it is established that the ML family is established in a metropolitan city for ages which is why their Hindi is incredibly posh while the FL family's dialect is influenced by their locality.
And what's most interesting is that the class difference between the Raizadas and Guptas isn't in their accent but in their vocabulary. Devyani's language is more commanding, direct, polished. She's like "sab ke sab kahaan marr gaye, waqt se aage mat jayiye" - a lot of polished, wise metaphors.
Buaji/Madhumati is like "Sasur ki naati, naas piti, haye re Nandkisore" - phrases that an elite family simply won't utter!
Last thing I love about the language in the show is how Arnav gets better in speaking, wording his emotions over time (especially in Hindi, he usually reverts to English when he's very passionate) and how Khushi absorbs his vocabulary, accent and tone (ugh talk about Sanaya's FANTASTIC acting).
Ok I had A LOT OF FUN WITH THIS.
I hope I made sense?
Best,
JWB

The Ultimate Guide to Ayurvedic Ubtan for Radiant Skin
What is Ayurvedic Ubtan?
Ayurvedic Ubtan is a natural exfoliant used in India for centuries. It is made from a beautiful blend of natural ingredients from Mother Earth, such as turmeric, chickpea flour, sandalwood, rose petals, and various other herbs and grains known for their skin-nourishing properties. The word “Ubtan” means “to apply” in Hindi, and it is traditionally used as a pre-wedding ritual to help brides achieve glowing, radiant skin on their big day.
Benefits of Ayurvedic Ubtan:
Ayurvedic ubtan has numerous benefits for the skin. It can help to:
Bring a real glow to the face: The natural exfoliating properties of ubtan help to remove dead skin cells, revealing smoother, brighter skin. Natural ingredients like gram flour and rose water leave the skin supple and fresh. Sandalwood powder is also known for skin brightening.
Detoxify and cleanse the skin deeply: The herbs and grains in Ubtan help to draw out toxins deep within the skin, leaving it clean & refreshed.
Nourish: The natural ingredients in Ubtan are abundant in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that hydrate the skin by leaving it soft and supple.
Reduce inflammation: Ayurvedic Ubtan contains anti-inflammatory ingredients such as turmeric and sandalwood that can help to calm and soothe inflamed skin.
Make you look younger and improve skin tone: Turmeric used in ubtan makes the skin appear youthful by reversing the signs of aging. It has antioxidants that restore the lost luster and moisture of the skin. Regular use of ubtan can help to improve skin tone and texture, leaving the skin looking radiant and glowing.
If you are new to the term Ubtan and its benefits for the skin, recall it from the Haldi ceremony of Indian marriages. You must have seen a yellowish-orange paste that gets applied to both bride & groom. That paste is traditional Ubtan, an Ayurvedic recipe to exfoliate, detoxify, and nourish the skin and body. Ayurvedic Ubtan for glowing skin has been a primary ingredient in the secret of beauty for many beautiful Indian queens, like Queen Jodha, Rani Padmini, and many others.

tw: mentions of domestic abuse
-
Need din namin magchikahan, so that's what we did dahil fresh from breakup ang best friend ko. It was a fucked up situation so wala kaming pakialam kahit nag-iiyakan kami sa gitna ng café hahaha.
There was an older lady na nag-aabang din ng ride sa tabi namin, and she approached us to ask kung may taxi pa. Sabi namin di na namin nakikita talaga puro Grab na lang kasi mga sinasakyan, so napa-book din siya ng Grab. Dumating agad ride ng best friend ko, so naiwan na lang kami nung tita. She asked for my help dahil mahina signal para mag data, so I obliged. I helped her look for the right license plate rin kasi hindi na niya makita masyado. And then, she asked me if Catholic ako and I told her that I was. She then asked me if I could pray for her, if I could pray really hard... and then she started crying so I tried to comfort her. She told me na battered wife siya to a cheating husband, and that her kids are kind of blaming her for what's happening. "You are what you tolerate" pa nga daw, which I found to be extremely unfair. Nobody wants to tolerate these things. Hindi madali umalis sa ganong sitwasyon lalo na if malakas yung kontrol ng taong yun sa buhay mo. Sabi rin niya na her husband basically killed her on paper (always wrote "single" sa legal documents regarding properties and valuable possessions nila as a married couple) and apparently lawyer din pala asawa niya kaya nakakalusot. She said that if she left, she would have nothing. If she was left by him, and he's been gone for 3 days na daw, she would have nothing as well. It was clear to me that she needed to vent, so I let her. I don't think she was being allowed the space to talk about it at home with her family. She told me more details about her life, and even showed me a bruise she had on her forehead that she got from her husband. 😔 My ride arrived and I told her I had to leave, but I asked for her name so that I could contact her through fb and offer to listen to her troubles, offer possible legal advice because my family runs a law office as well, and just let her know that she has a friend and that I'm ready to help any way I can.
Here's the crazy part!
When I mentioned that we run a law office, she asked for my full name and where I was from, and then asked if I was related to Atty. *insert my dad's name* from UP Diliman daw. I was shocked!! Sabi ko sa kanya na dad ko yun, and she was equally surprised! She told me that she was a batchmate from when my dad studied there. I confirmed to her that that was my dad she was talking about, but had to deliver to her the news of his passing and that he was gone 2 years ago. I promised I would text her to check if she got home safe, and I rode my Grab. I had a hellish ride btw but pagod na kong ikwento because it was so bad!!! I was genuinely terrified and texting family members na. The driver was clueless, relied on me for directions despite me telling him di ko alam kung san niya kami dinadaan (he chose a route he NEVER went through just to avoid traffic), and then after a supposedly 40 min ride that stretched into nearly 3 hours, guards wouldn't let us in from where we passed through so he ended up having a full-on altercation with them. Siya pa yung nagalit sa ginawa niya and he was driving so recklessly due to anger. I ended up being way more sick that night when I got home because of the stress I felt like I was dying haha. I was legit ready to ask to be dropped off along the way na lang from being so scared but I couldn't because I felt so sick. Tiniis ko na lang.
Later that night, the tita replied to me and told me she got home safe and told me that I'm an angel sent her way. She told me her husband's full name din, which I took note of, and realized that my dad has mentioned this name before. Even my mom recognized him by name. But I don't think they really knew each other (my dad and that lady's lawyer husband) dahil not from the same vicinity naman kami but small world lang din ang lawyers they at least know almost everybody by name.
I just think it was such a wild coincidence like who would have thought we would cross paths? I know this is such a heavy topic, but I am completely not at all inside her world and her life, and I can't do anything she won't allow me to as a stranger she just crossed paths with. We do still talk to each other through messenger, kamustahan, just reminding her that she has a friend from afar. It makes me happy to know I can offer her some joy and friendship. Maybe my dad brought her and I together in that short moment. He does like to pull the strings from heaven after all, I've noticed.

Curse Words Around the World Have Something in Common (We Swear)
Tumblr media
These four sounds are missing from some of the seven words you can never say on television, and the pattern prevails in other languages too, researchers say.
“Holy motherforking shirtballs!” a character exclaimed on “The Good Place,” a television show that took place in a version of the afterlife where swearing is forbidden (as it is in this newspaper, most of the time). In a way, this celestial censorship was realistic.
A study published Tuesday in the journal Psychonomic Bulletin & Review found that curse words in several unrelated languages sound alike. They’re less likely than other words to include the consonant sounds L, R, W or Y. And more family-friendly versions of curses often have these sounds added, just like the R in “shirt” or “fork.” The finding suggests that some underlying rules may link the world’s languages, no matter how different they are.
“In English, some of the worst words seem to have common phonetic properties,” said Ryan McKay, a psychologist at Royal Holloway, University of London. They’re often short and punchy. They also tend to include the sounds P, T or K, “without giving any obvious examples,” Dr. McKay said. These sounds are called stop consonants because they interrupt the airflow when we’re speaking.
Dr. McKay teamed up with his colleague Shiri Lev-Ari to learn whether this familiar pattern went beyond English. They wondered whether it might even represent what’s called sound symbolism.
Sound symbolism is when a word sounds like what it means. One type is onomatopoeia; for example, words that describe a cat’s meow or a rooster’s crow are similar across many languages. Globally, words having to do with noses often include the nasal N sound, and words related to smallness often have an “ee” sound (as in “mini” or “teensy weensy”), like the squeaking of a small creature.
To look for patterns in swearing, the researchers asked fluent speakers of Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Korean and Russian to list the most vulgar words they could think of. Once they’d compiled a list of each language’s most frequently used epithets, the researchers compared these with neutral words from the same language.
In these languages, they didn’t find the harsh-sounding stop consonants that seem common in English swear words. “Instead, we found patterns that none of us expected,” Dr. Lev-Ari said. The vulgar words were defined by what they lacked: the consonant sounds L, R, W and Y. (In linguistics, these gentle sounds are called approximants.)
Next, the scientists looked for the same phenomenon using speakers of different languages: Arabic, Chinese, Finnish, French, German and Spanish. The subjects listened to pairs of words in a language they didn’t speak, and guessed which word in each pair was offensive. In reality, all the words were invented. For example, the researchers started with the Albanian word “zog,” for “bird,” and created the pair of fake words “yog” and “tsog.” Subjects were more likely to guess that words without approximants, such as “tsog,” were curses.
Finally, the researchers combed through the dictionary for English swear words and their cleaned-up versions, also called minced oaths (“darn,” “frigging” and so on). Once again, the clean versions included more of the sounds L, R, W and Y.
“What this paper finds for the first time is that taboo words across languages, unrelated to each other, may pattern similarly,” said Benjamin Bergen, a cognitive scientist at the University of California, San Diego, who was not involved in the study.
Unlike other cases such as cock-a-doodle-doos or words for “nose,” these words don’t share a meaning, but a function. They’re meant to offend. The results suggest that “not all sounds are equally suitable for profanity,” the authors wrote.
“That’s a new thing,” Dr. Bergen said. “Maybe the things that we want to do with words lead us to expect those words to have particular sounds.”
To make sure the pattern of approximants missing from curses isn’t an accident, it would be nice to find it in an even larger sample of languages, said Dr. Bergen, author of a book called “What the F: What Swearing Reveals About Our Language, Our Brains, and Ourselves.” It would also be nice to learn why those consonants are missing. “There may be some deeper explanation,” he said.
A 20th-century linguistic principle held that the sounds of words were arbitrary: Any word could have any meaning. “That’s really supposed to be one of the things that defines language,” Dr. Lev-Ari said. With profane words, though, as in other cases of sound symbolism, the sounds themselves seem to carry meaning.
“This can shape and change our understanding of how languages are formed,” Dr. Lev-Ari said.
French is an exception, she noted — swear words in French have just as many of the gentler consonant sounds as other words. Yet when native French speakers heard pairs of foreign-sounding words, they were still less likely to guess that words with L, R, W and Y sounds were curses.
“This is really something fundamental,” Dr. Lev-Ari said. “There’s something about the sounds that inherently sounds non-sweary.”
