I’ve - tentatively - finished my demo reel! (also on my webbed site) By which I mean I’m bringing this in to lesson tomorrow and my teacher will probably tear it [lovingly] to shreds and I’ll change a thousand things about it and make a new one shortly thereafter. But I’m still pleased with this! If nothing else, I think making it really helped me feel like I’ve accomplished a lot in the past 2 years. I’ve also made some very good and very useful friends [I know a percussionist and a wind player now to play stuff for me, #poggers, but I also genuinely love them as people].

I don’t really know if this is going to get me a job or anything but I think it demonstrates what I can do and hopefully it means I can continue finding and working on projects that I find meaningful, like Hashtag Project Duskpuppy and FFIX Zine have been, as well as my personal projects and those of friends.

The best art is heartfelt and collaborative. <3

Marlow has Autistic Detective swag specifically in that if there are Bad Noises Bad Lights Bad Smells Bad Textures she will go rabid insane and try to hide in the dark for a while before she loses it and bites someone. On the other hand if it is quiet enough, or if it's raining, she will fall asleep ANYWHERE. She probably sleeps in her office more than she does at home. We decided Cup Noodles were invented in the 40s for the sole reason of being eaten by her. She is VERY SHORT. She is left-handed. Anika likes her hair color.

She's a fire witch. She doesn't usually share her first name and simply signs it as her initial: M. Marlow. Her birthday is May 18th. She's the youngest child of many siblings. She has tummy hurt ALL THE TIME. She loves astronomy and stargazing. Her secret literary preference is Vampire novels. She's even gay!

Bonus fun fact: She was named after Philip Marlowe of Raymond Chandler fame but spelled without the E at the end to make it more distinctive.

20.) your ocverse just got a movie trilogy a la hunger games style. how have they horribly mangled your message/theme so that the movies are now a showcase of what the original was condemning?

oh boy this is painful LOL i think the worst possible interpretation of Duskpuppy's themes would be one that leans strongly into like… a Punitive Justice Copaganda worldview, cynical edgy shock value with no heart, or one that assumes the Noir stylings come from a place of mockery and not love. There's another theme that i think could be horribly mangled but hmm i dont think i want to spoil it :Y

14.) whats your favorite part of this story/project?

I dont want to spoil my fave storybeats but!! I simply love getting to go apeshit about detectives!! I love detectives!! I love detective tropes!!! This is a detective lovers zone!!!! if u dont love detectives then get da hell outta here!!!!!

As for the story i love getting to develop Anika and Marlow's relationship and seeing how it changes and reflects how they grow as people. they are simply Everything to me

the thing about duskpuppy is that we are throwing all our favourite detective tropes in a blender so Marlow naturally represents the hardboiled film noir private investigator, Anika represents the eager amateur with a quirky weirdo flair more commonly found in british mysteries, but then there's Hal who represents the police procedural and as much as i love her as a character (and i love that people love her) she is A Cop and thats something we have to directly address in the stories if we wanna be thematically consistent

Anika never talks about their past except to drop some very vague-yet-alarming statements sometimes and then move right along like they never said anything weird. They LOVE costumes and dressing up and already had a detective coat ready to go just in case a Real Detective ever dropped out of the blue to offer them a job (isn't that convenient!!!). Speaking of which they love fictional detectives and have read a metric ton of detective novels. We decided The Great Mouse Detective was released in the 40s for the sole reason of being Anika's Favourite Movie. They easily fall asleep in moving vehicles. They're the kind of person who says "oh, I know a place!!" and takes you to the roof of an abandoned building. Actually they love walking into random shops and restaurants just to see what they'll find there, so they know every hole-in-the-wall hidden gem in the city. They are friends with rats and pigeons and won't hesitate to pick them up off the street and gush about how cute they are. Their birthday is September 5th. Tax fraud creature.

Already did Marlow but bonus Marlow fact: Y'know all those detective novels Anika reads? Marlow doesn't know a single one of them. She's vaguely aware of Sherlock Holmes, and that's about it.

duskpuppy isnt "a noir" bc its ultimately about defying the foundational assumptions of noir but it uses said genre conventions to visually and narratively convey the themes we built on top of it. and also it is being written by people who love detectives so damn much and also for me personally i go nutso crazy for a film noir. me and robin have been watching them together and having a huge blast. so whatever duskpuppy is isnt "noir" but it is dripping with love for it all over while doing it violence. its a conversation with the lovers of the genre about what it ultimately means. and if u hate noir and come at it with a bunch of assumptions about why it sucks just to see it subverted you will probably get a very cheap experience out of it tbh.

There's probably a lot of others that could work tbh but i like that this one feels like a proper smoky noir theme.... with some fun color symbolism to boot :V
