Description: In 1964, Charles A. McDonald was at Camp Khe Sanh before the first wholesale introduction of North Vietnamese Army troops onto the battlefield against U.S. forces. For twenty-four years in war and peace, McDonald served his country in its elite units as an Airborne Infantryman and Special Forces soldier. He trained and armed Bru tribesmen, Chinese mercenaries, Vietmamese Airborne and Special Forces troops. Stories as seen through his eyes "In This Valley There Are Tigers", McDonald tells a narrative of the personal violence and desperate suicide attacks in combat with vivid detail as it was from his own perspective during his three year experience in the Second Indochina War. He was there!

My Review: Charles McDonald writes like few others do - and that is both a good and a bad thing!

Let's get the negative out of the way, this book is an absolute SLOG to get through that a good editor should have been able to tighten up and clean up. But at the same time, doing so would have removed one of the things that makes this book so unique! McDonald tells the story of his three tours in Vietnam, starting with his last one as an advisor to the ARVN 7th Airborne battalion, followed up by his first tour with team A-322 in 1964 at Khe Sanh, and finally his middle tour split between Project Delta B-52 and the 1/327th 101st Airborne.

He flows back and forth between his own experiences, the experiences of others, and as a 3rd person historical narrator of events. When he is telling the stories of others, you often get much more detail of who / what / when, whereas when he is telling his own stories, you get stream of consciousness writing explicit with minutiae and details… what things smelled like, what he heard, what he was feeling. You get a lot of stories about bugs and birds and animals, about dew and the weather, you rarely ever hear a name or explanation of who he is serving with, and so many story elements are lost in all of the commentary about the cicadas and the mosquitos and the noises and the smells.

It's a slog to get through but at the same time, it's powerful to to experience these events through his eyes and thoughts in a way few authors bother to do.

Most authors tell you what is going on … we went here, we did this, we ended up there, we then went back to camp and slept. McDonald shows you footfall by football, kneel down by kneel down, almost every breath he took and every though and emotion he experienced. It's an insight into such a wide ranging experience with 4 different units doing 4 very different things, and you are really along for the ride … even when he's telling the history or the stories of others. Definitely not for the timid, but if you can handle it… go for it!

What are some of the impacts of floating structures to the marine environment?

Floating structures offer potential benefits like renewable energy generation and increased living space, they can also have various impacts on the marine environment. Here are some key points to consider:

1] Potential positive impacts:

Adaptability to rising sea levels: Since floating structures can adapt to rising sea levels unlike fixed structures, expensive modifications required to fixed structures to adjust to changes in sea level and corresponding carbon footprint can be avoided.

Sustainable “Land” creation: In bustling coastal cities such as Mumbai, the creation of land involves reclamation which in turn means dredging at some other location. Both dredging and reclamation have significant and non-reversible impacts on marine life (flora & fauna). Further, the marine environment is also impacted such as changes in current flows and strengths that impact existing marine facilities. Using floating structures to create artificial “land” can overcome these issues.

Relocation Ability: Unlike fixed structures, floating structures can be relocated to different locations depending on business case or project requirements.

­Floating windfarms: Noise from windfarms on land can impact the quality of life for populations in nearby locations. Floating wind farms that can be located further away from population centres can avoid this situation.

Floating Data Centres: Floating data centres have a lower carbon footprint as surrounding water can be used for cooling purposes thereby reducing energy consumption. ­

2.1) Physical impact:

Sedimentation: Structures have the potential to alter water flow patterns, resulting in increased sedimentation in certain areas, which could potentially overtake benthic organisms and have an impact on delicate ecosystems. However, reclamation has much more serious impacts as compared to floating structures.

Collision risks: Floating structures can create collision risks for marine animals, such as fish, whales, and sea turtles, depending on their size and location.

2.2) Chemical impact:

Pollution: Accidental discharges from offshore structures, such as antifouling paints, lubricants, and sewage, from drilling platforms can pollute the surrounding water, harming marine life. However, floating structures are designed and built to Classification Society Rules and need to comply to MARPOL Regulations to prevent marine pollution.

Noise pollution: Construction and operation of industrial floating structures can generate noise that can disrupt the communication and behaviour of marine animals.

2.3) Biological impact:

Introduction of invasive species: Structures can be a stepping stone for invasive species to establish themselves in new areas, which can disrupt local ecosystems.

Artificial reefs: Structures can attract certain fish species, but they may not offer the same ecological complexity and functionality as natural reefs.

­Overall, the impact of floating structures on the marine environment depends on various factors, including the size, type, location, and operation of the structure. Careful planning, environmental impact assessments, and mitigation measures are crucial to minimize negative impacts and maximize potential benefits.

hi simblr, it's my birthday today! virgo supremacy! I decided to share one of my favorite recolors i've ever made (finally!!!). I sticker-ed up the City Living keyboard and added some other fun swatches. There is a functional version for use with the City Living EP, and a non functional deco version for both the floor and the wall! More info + download below the cut!

DETAILS:

This is a recolor of the keyboard that came with City Living, and the deco mesh separated by @pixlmonster. Unfortunately this means CL is required, I'm sorry! I was hoping the deco versions would work without CL but they do not. Mesh by pixlmonster is included.

There are 19 swatches. The first 6 are the more unique sticker-ed swatches, and some of my personal favorites. Swatches 7-11 are more patterned recolors, and the last 8 swatches are from @pictureamoebae's fluoro-pop collection. Sometimes you just need a neon pink keyboard, y'know?

I'll be super honest: It's been a year since I first initially started this project and I didn't do a great job recording where I got all of the stickers used. I apologize. Some of them were in game assets already, found via petaluhsims' sticker sheets. Some were found via google/freepik and some came from other places that I'm sure I'm forgetting. I made the parental advisory + seattle grunge stickers on the first swatch myself. Simlish fonts were found via franzillasims' font masterpost. Thanks so much to all of the original sticker/pattern creators, all credit goes to them. I just compiled a bunch of stuff together.
