Identifying which products will succeed
In today's world it is hard to determine what products will take off vs. which ones will not. In identifying products I like to consider a slightly different list than Rodger's five factors.
1. Scale of Problem - Is new product really helping a huge pain point.
2. Ease of Use - Can I learn how to use the product the first/second time I interact with it.
3. Network effects - After someone uses this, will it become more appealing to other users and will that person want to share their experience.
4. Innovative - Can this product do things that people have dreamt about?
5. Brand appeal
Using the criteria here are some examples:
1. Lyft will fizzle compared to Uber. - Uber has more regular drivers than Lyft which helps ensure users always have access to a Uber. Furthermore, there are limited network effects between Lyft drivers. Uber;s more standardized and professional experience will also ensure it continues to be adopted in the professional market.
2. Google glass will have slow adoption - Google glass doesn't have a clear problem and its applications aren't easily understood. That said, early tech adopters find it very innovative and will be forgiving as more applications are created. Immediate network effects also won't be seen because most applications for google glass will be able to be accessed via smart phones. As a result of all of this, I expect Google glass to have slow adoption and if it doesn't have 1 or 2 killer use cases it has the potential of failing.

Your customers don’t care if there’s a new feature. They care about how your product features (new or established) help them reach their goal. Eric Ries, CEO of LTSE, said it this way, “𝘚𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦; 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘴.” Telling your customers that your product can solve their problems just isn’t enough. Proactively find out their goal and come up with a solution that helps them reach it, 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳.
