Your heart was practically beating out of your chest. Anytime Mason got tackled, he usually came right back up, like a champ. But, he wasn’t coming back up now. In fact, he was screaming in pain, grabbing hold of his ankle. You didn’t want to jump to any conclusions but when you saw the Chelsea physio call for a stretcher, you couldn’t help but worry.
You excused yourself from your group of friends, shuffling through the row until you made it down to the tunnel, where the stretcher into disappeared moments ago.
“Mason!” you shouted, running to catch up with the stretcher. Mason’s head snapped back at your voice, a sigh of relief finding itself on his pained face, if only for a moment. As soon as you caught up to the stretcher, he extended his hand out, needing to intertwine it with yours for emotional support, and you were happy to let him do it. “How are you feeling, baby?”
“I’m okay,” he managed before crying out in pain as one of the physics assessed his ankle.
You turned to the man, asking him. “He’s not okay,” he truthfully answered. “Might have torn his Achilles’ tendon.”
Fuck, you thought, recalling how Ruben and Calum had suffered the same fate and had taken months of healing and physical therapy to get back to the pitch.
All you could do right now was hold tightly onto his hand and whisper encouraging words into his ear to try and calm him down and possibly distract from the excruciating amount of pain he was in.
You rode to the hospital with him in an ambulance; you couldn’t bear to hear the sounds of Mason’s cries of pain. As Mason was wheeled past a set of double doors into the ER, your hand slipped from him as only promets were allowed through there. You kept yourself busy by filling out the paperwork for Mason’s reasoning for being at the hospital as well as his personal information.
Mason ended up needing surgery for the tear and fortunately, it went well. You sat in his hospital room, day and night, with little to no food or sleep, just observing his post-op recovering and making sure nothing went wrong. Even when some friends and Mason himself had tried to convince you to go home and get some rest, you refused to leave his side. You wanted to be there for every moment, just in case.
A few days later, you two were finally able to go home, with Mason’s doctor suggesting he take it very easy for a while. You waited on him hand and foot, never once complaining and Mason appreciated it more than you could ever imagine.
One of the first days you two were back home, you made Mason and Ruben, who has come to visit his mate, cups of tea alongside some biscuits. You found yourself retreating to the loveseat, participating in conversation every once in a while until your lack of sleep caught up to you and hour eyes slowly fluttered shut.
Mason watched you fall asleep, your exhaustion from the past few days finally catching up to you. He couldn’t believe you had taken such good care of him through this whole process; no one had ever done that for him before. He watched you peacefully sleep, and smiled in realization. He turned to Ruben when he asked what was up with the cheeky grin.
“I’m gonna marry her one day,” Mason said to him, eyes glued to you. It was a very bold statement but Mason believed it to be more true than anything he’d ever said before.
