Soon after the quake, another crisis emerged—a cholera epidemic. In October 2010, cholera cases were found, spreading rapidly, with 900 deaths within a month. By October 22, a national health emergency was declared as the epidemic reached all of Haiti’s ten departments. To date, 439,604 people have been affected, and 6,226 have died due to cholera. This combination of earthquake devastation and subsequent cholera outbreak added immense challenges to Haiti’s recovery efforts, impacting the lives of its people and posing complex problems for reconstruction.
