TRUMP: “You have to understand history, and you have to understand the culture. So many other aspects of our country... and people people can study that and you can hate it - and let’s all hate it - but you can’t take down George Washington’s statue. Half of our country is named after Washington.”
THE HISTORICAL FACTS ARE: George Washington inherited his first 10 slaves at the tender age of 11 when his father died and by 1786 he owned 216 slaves. He inherited even more slaves when he married his rich wife, Martha, and by the time of his death, Washington owned 317 living slaves. He ruthlessly pursued runaway slaves and punished them severely with whippings and other forms of torture - even going as far as to sign into law the Fugitive Slave Act, which allowed slave owners the right to come into slavery-free states and capture fugitive slaves, take them “home” to their plantations and torture them for running away in the first place. Oh and speaking of slave torture, his dentures contained the teeth of slaves. 🦷🤦🏾♂️ He was also instrumental in the continued genocide of Native Americans. As a landowner, he constantly “expanded” his holdings by illegally taking Native American land: claiming or “buying” (from the state) large parcels of land that origonally belonged to indigenous people and then fighting long and drawn out battles (that he knew indigenous people did not have the resources to win), knowing that in the end the land would remain his.
TRUMP: “We have to remember the heritage and the culture of our country. Here is the other problem that I have — a lot of these people don’t even know what they are taking down. I see what’s happening on television, and they are ripping down things they have no idea what they are ripping down, but they started off with the Confederates and now go to Ulysses Grant so what is that all about?”
THE HISTORICAL FACTS ARE: Ulysses S. Grant's wife owned several slaves when he married her (and thus inherited said slaves)... As president, Grant's policy towards Native American people could easily be described as cultural genocide. He instigated an illegal and bloody war against the Lakota people of the Black Hills, and used federal force to push Native people onto reservations and to slaughter the buffalo they relied on for food.
Clearly someone needs to teach the President some actual History... 🤔
