No fewer than five new models celebrated their series launch at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing today. The first new addition is the BMW 4 Series Coupé, which continues the sports coupé tradition at the BMW site in Lower Bavaria with its individual and sporty character.

Updated models of the BMW 5 Series Sedan, including the BMW M5 and the BMW 5 Series Touring, will come off the production line at the same time. All vehicles with four and six-cylinder engines will now offer not only sharper design, but also highly efficient 48-volt mild-hybrid technology – ensuring improved driving performance with better fuel economy and enhanced driving comfort. This will also benefit the new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, which impresses customers with its outstanding long-distance capabilities.

The new BMW 4 Series Coupé

Elegant sports coupés are an essential part of BMW model history and also have a long tradition at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, beginning with the BMW 6 Series Coupé in 1976. 44 years later, the new BMW 4 Series Coupé is now rolling off the production line in Lower Bavaria, bringing its standalone design and distinctive character profile to the premium mid-size segment. The biggest sales markets for the two-door coupé are the US, the UK and Germany.

The new BMW 4 Series uses intelligent lightweight construction to support its uniquely sporty handling: The bonnet, front side panels and doors of the new BMW 4 Series Coupé are made from aluminium at the Dingolfing press plant. Its especially powerful 275 kW/374 hp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine delivers outstanding performance, capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. Two four-cylinder petrol engines and a four-cylinder diesel unit will also be available from market launch in October 2020. Two six-cylinder in-line diesel engines will also join the line-up in March 2021.

The interior design and equipment options are also clearly focused on creating a particularly intense driving experience. The new BMW 4 Series Coupé is fitted with a retractable seatbelt extender and windscreen with acoustic glass as standard. Our plant is now ideally prepared for more models later this year, as well as the series launch of the BMW iNEXT in 2021.”

The BMW 5 Series has been a real success story for BMW Group Plant Dingolfing since 1972. More than 630,000 vehicles from the current model generation have already been sold worldwide. Targeted optimisations are now creating the necessary conditions to continue the success of the BMW 5 Series. For example, the BMW kidney grille has been enhanced and the LED headlights given new graphic elements, while the rear lights have undergone three-dimensional modelling.

BMW M GmbH has also given its BMW M5 high-performance sedan (fuel consumption combined: 10.6–10.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 242–239 g/km) a sharper look, including a redesign of the front and rear aprons.

The BMW 5 Series now offers even more electric drive train options: The BMW 530e Sedan (fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 1.8-1.7; CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 42-39; power consumption in kWh/100 km (combined): 14.8-13.7) is available right away with the latest battery-cell generation – enabling a pure-electric range of 62 to 67 kilometres. From autumn 2020, the BMW 5 Series Touring will also be available for the first time as a plug-in hybrid. The BMW 545e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 2.4–2.1 l/100 km; power consumption combined: 16.3–15.3 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions from fuel combined: 54–49 g/km) will be the first plug-in hybrid with a six-cylinder petrol engine. This means, from November 2020, five electrified model variants of the BMW 5 Series alone will be available.

In addition, all four and six-cylinder engines will come with ultra-efficient 48-volt mild-hybrid technology as standard. Depending on the driving situation, the starter generator either allows brake energy to be regenerated or provides an electric boost of 11 hp. Nestled between the GLE63’s front fenders is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Hand assembled by the craftspeople in Affalterbach, Germany, this jewel of an engine is smoother than creamy peanut butter, delivering a stomping 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, more than enough to put the hurt on rivals like the Audi RS Q8 and BMW X6 M. That’s also enough sauce to rocket this coupe-ish crossover to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and onward to a terminal velocity of 174 mph, though curiously, the GLE63 S doesn’t feel as quick as the numbers suggest. This Mercedes is so refined and quiet you’re almost always going at least 10 mph faster than you think, even when the active exhaust system is uncorked.

Helping deliver that performance is the automaker’s EQ-Boost 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which provides up to 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. EQ-Boost also smooths out gearchanges and aids with regenerative braking. The system’s integrated starter-generator is sandwiched between the engine and nine-speed transmission, where it takes up little space. The whole shebang is pretty much invisible; the only time you’re really aware of EQ-Boost is during engine stop-start events, which are some of the smoothest in the business.

That transmission changes gears with sports-car immediacy and is very responsive to requests from the paddle shifters. Still, its performance can be somewhat irregular, particularly at low speeds where there’s often a slight disconnect between the accelerator pedal and what the gearbox is doing. The vehicle’s overeager brakes are also a bit bothersome. With the front rotors measuring nearly 16 inches in diameter, their stopping power is undeniable, they’re just a bit too touchy in everyday driving.

Active Roll Stabilization along with adaptive damping, an air suspension and even active engine mounts are new additions for 2021, and together they keep the GLE63 S Coupe’s body flatter than Florida while tackling corners. The suspension does a commendable job delivering a good ride, though I’d like to feel a little more delineation between the various settings. Comfort is firm yet nicely isolated, but cranking it up to Sport or Sport Plus doesn’t make the ride all that much stiffer. You’ll feel road imperfections to be sure, but they’re never pounding.

This engine is a real honey.

The GLE63 S Coupe is well balanced and feels luxury-car refined even in its starchiest settings. Unfortunately, the steering is forgettably ordinary. It’s light and a bit imprecise, which is no help in a vehicle that doesn’t track very well. This Mercedes tends to wander, even on smooth, straight pavement, which means you have to make course corrections to avoid kissing the lines and irritating the lane-keeping system. Roadshow social media editor Daniel Golson made the same comment in his review of the similar but less potent 2021 GLE53 Coupe, which also rolled on staggered-width AMG wheels, though the ones on this example are 1 inch smaller in diameter, clocking in at just 21 inches.

Given its emphasis on sportiness, you can’t expect great fuel economy from this Mercedes. Accordingly, it stickers at 15 miles per gallon city and 19 mpg highway, however, in pretty heavy-footed driving, I’ve managed to average around 18.4, a good bit better than the combined rating of 17 mpg.

As a top-shelf luxury vehicle, this Mercedes comes with a broad complement of driver-assistance tech. Adaptive LED headlamps with automatic high beams, active parking assist and blind-spot monitoring are all standard equipment. The $1,950 Driver Assistance Package Plus throws features like active lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic-sign recognition and adaptive cruise control with lane centering into the mix, and that last item works phenomenally well. The GLE63 S Coupe’s adaptive cruise control is super smooth and more situationally aware than an undercover police officer. It seemingly always knows what’s going on and how to respond, plus the lane-centering feature is one of the best I’ve ever experienced, making the vehicle track practically like a monorail.

A couple things could be improved, but this interior is a pleasant place no matter which seat you’re in.

This Mercedes-AMG’s interior is a lovely place, rife with premium leathers, laser-straight stitching and no shortage of amenities including standard heated and ventilated front seats, which are as comfortable as a La-Z-Boy recliner. A Burmester sound system is included, too, as is wireless phone charging and embedded navigation. Unfortunately, some of the GLE63 S Coupe’s interior elements aren’t quite as nice as they should be for a vehicle that starts at $117,000. Nothing is insultingly low-rent, but the climate controls, gear-selector and turn-signal stalks as well as some of the secondary switches just don’t feel six-figure sturdy.

When it comes to interior tech, you get a pair of 12.3-inch displays mounted in a single housing that runs across most of the dashboard. One of these screens serves as a reconfigurable digital instrument cluster, the other handles infotainment duties. For better or worse, the familiar MBUX multimedia array is how you interact with many of the vehicle’s features. This system is both pretty and performant, though it’s not my favorite. It offers way too much functionality and feels like it requires a keyboard and mouse to properly use, which is not what you want while driving. Fortunately, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and Mercedes has not switched to hyper-annoying touch-sensitive control pads on the steering wheel like it has on some of its other vehicles, including the E450 All Terrain — at least, not yet.

The Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe is a lot like a batch of dough that didn’t rise. Next to the conventional GLE SUV, its roof is noticeably deflated. That tapering top adds visual pizzazz, though, it eats into cargo space and rear-seat headroom, but these deficits don’t ruin the vehicle, not by any stretch. Second-row noggin space is reduced by 1.8 inches, but there’s still plenty, even for taller adults. Cargo space behind the aft bench clocks in at 27.5 cubic feet, which swells to 63.2 cubes when you fold the rear backrest down. In comparison, the GLE63 S serves up 39.3 and 74.9 cubic feet, respectively. Judging between these two utility vehicles is like comparing pitas to baguettes, breads that are clearly different form factors but both are delicious.

Unless you need as much cargo space as possible, the GLE63 S Coupe is a perfectly versatile utility vehicle.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe’s base price is just about $117,000, or about 40 grand more than the less potent GLE53 Coupe. As for this example, it checks out for $131,430 including requisite delivery fees, which total $1,050. A few options pad the bottom line, things like that $1,950 driver-assistance package, a head-up display ($1,100), the fancier Burmester High-End Surround Sound System ($4,550) and the Warmth and Comfort Package ($1,050), to name a few.

With thundering performance, a comfortable and refined cabin, plus plenty of style both inside and out, the coupe-ified crossover is well-rounded and surprisingly livable. If you value style over capaciousness get the GLE63 S Coupe, but if versatility matters more, stick with the standard GLE SUV. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

First Look: The BMW Concept i4

The BMW Group is opening a new chapter in its history with the unveiling of a pure-electric Gran Coupe in Geneva. The BMW Concept i4 takes electric drive to the core of the BMW brand and heralds a new era in Sheer Driving Pleasure. The BMW Concept i4 represents a look ahead to the BMW i4, slated to enter production in 2021 as the BMW Group’s first all-electric model in the premium midsize class. It provides a whole new take on the dynamic excellence for which BMW is renowned and blends a modern, elegantly sporty design with the spaciousness and functionality of a four-door Gran Coupe – all while generating zero local emissions. Film composer Hans Zimmer provided the soundtrack to the world premiere in Geneva and used the press conference to present the unique electric drive sound for the BMW Concept i4.

“The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW brand,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The design is dynamic, clean and elegant. In short: a perfect BMW that happens to be zero emission.” The drivetrain’s numbers include a range of 600 km (373 miles), output of up to 530hp, 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration of approximately 4.0 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph). However, the driving qualities of the BMW Concept i4 cannot be expressed in figures alone. The virtually silent delivery of power creates an entirely new sensation of dynamism.

“The design of the BMW Concept i4 shows fantastic proportions, a powerfully expressive character and, of course, a lot of attention to detail,” adds Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design. “With the Curved Display, we have redefined BMW’s signature driver focus in an extremely elegant way. At the same time, the BMW Concept i4 transports a feeling of sustainable driving pleasure.” As part of the package, the Concept i4 includes several exterior and interior design elements which will make an appearance in both the BMW i4 and other electrically-powered production vehicles.

The exterior – electrifying aesthetics. The modern, elegant exterior represents a deliberate counterpoint to the dynamic flair of the driving experience. The perfectly resolved Gran Coupe proportions create an authentic, modern and confident appearance. The long wheelbase, fastback roofline and short overhangs form a basic profile brimming with elegance and dynamism. With its four doors, the BMW Concept i4 offers not only a high level of everyday usability and practicality, but also a much larger interior than the car’s modern and dynamic proportions would immediately suggest.

Clear surfaces and aerodynamic details. Crisp, smooth lines and taut volumes merge into a rich, smoothly contoured sculpture and create a clear surfacing language. The modern exterior paint shade Frozen Light Copper reprises a color nuance displayed by the BMW Vision iNEXT and showcases the interplay of surfaces to visually stunning effect. Blue elements in the front end, flanks and rear end point to the car’s BMW i origins. They shine a spotlight on the signature BMW i icons and bring the technology below the surface to the fore – for example, the kidneys in their role as an intelligence panel, the mouldings in the side skirts concealing the battery technology, and the diffuser elements in the rear end, which fill the design space vacated by exhaust tailpipes and enhance aerodynamic efficiency.

he front end – the eye-catching face of a new era. The front-end treatment of the BMW Concept i4 presents the familiar BMW icons in a new look, lending a visually powerful face to the electric age at BMW. The prominent, closed-off kidney grille provides a tangible connection between the past and future of BMW. The BMW icon also gains new functionality: With no combustion engine to require cooling, the grille now serves primarily as an “intelligence panel” housing various sensors. The grille teases the technology behind the scenes with a special design for this model. The headlights likewise provide a bridge between the past and the future; the classical four-eyed front end is reprised here with a very modern and pared-back interpretation. Two intricate, freestanding LED elements on either side integrate all of the requisite light functions. Clean surfaces and a small number of crisp lines around the grille create a contemporary front-end graphic with considerable visual impact. A BMW i-style blue accent in the grille surround sets the seal on the front-end styling.

Taking the first steps with the new BMW brand identity. BMW is unveiling the brand’s new look for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. The new logo for communications also provides the basis for the badge on the BMW Concept i4. Its two-dimensional and transparent design ensures seamless integration and brings the special exterior color shade Frozen Light Copper to even greater prominence. The concept car not only has the task of looking ahead to the future in terms of aesthetics, technology and innovation, it also explores the design potential within our BMW trademark.

Striking rear end with aerodynamic features. The rear of the BMW Concept i4 sits low over the road and cuts a broad, horizontally emphasized figure. The surfaces progress across the rear in a smooth and luxuriant movement, and give it a very modern and calm appearance. The long, slim L-shaped rear lights continue the theme. Below the rear lights, the inward-angled surfaces form aerodynamics-enhancing lips and incorporate vertical air outlets. The verticality of the design here emphasizes the car’s sporting stance. Further down, the rear apron has a forceful presence and enhances aerodynamic efficiency. Where exhaust tailpipes would once have been found, diffuser elements in BMW i Blue indicate the presence of a pure-electric drive system and reference the design of the BMW i Vision Dynamics.

The interior – innovation meets minimalism. The interior of the BMW Concept i4 focuses on those times when the driver chooses to pilot the car themselves. To this end, every element in the front of the cabin is trained on the driver. The new Curved Display teams up with the steering wheel to reveal a new take on driver orientation and offers a look ahead to the display in the production versions of the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. Here, the presentation surfaces of the information display and Control Display merge into a single unit inclined towards the driver. This screen grouping optimizes presentation of information and makes the display’s touch operation more intuitive. Advanced display tech with non-reflective glass also removes the need for a shroud to shade the displays and therefore contributes to an extremely uncluttered and airy cockpit.

The Curved Display encompasses a large proportion of the section in front of the driver and above the center stack, and gives the front area a very modern appearance. Its slim, borderless form exudes quality and sophistication. Almost all operating functions are integrated into the display as part of an overall approach centered on reducing the number of haptic controls to the minimum. Even the climate control system now works by touch control.

Focus on the essential. The front section of the interior around the Curved Display also majors on pared-back design. The understated use of different materials and the fundamental arrangement of controls creates a modern yet also luxurious ambience. With this in mind, elements such as air outlets are integrated almost invisibly into the overall geometry and concealed behind strong patterns. Accent strips in warm Gold Bronze blending to chrome lend the interior a high-class touch. The central control panel replaces a traditional gear lever with a toggle-type shifter. Elements such as the iDrive Controller and seat memory buttons in the doors are finished in a classy crystal glass. The cloth/leather combination for the seats – composed of microfiber with line graphics and natural leather tanned using olive leaf – sets a high-quality and sustainable seal on the interior. The overall result is a clearly structured, bright and airy cabin which brings across the tranquillity and authority of electric drive systems.

The technology as earmarked for the upcoming BMW i4. Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology is a defining feature of the BMW i4 and therefore also of future electric mobility. The BMW iX3 due to go into production in 2020 will lead the way in the application of the new tech, which will be introduced in a number of electrically powered BMW vehicles – such as the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. The electric motor, power electronics, charging unit and high-voltage battery using fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology are all-new developments enabling the BMW Group to take another significant step forward in the field of electrified drive systems. The electric motor developed for the BMW i4 generates maximum output of up to 390 kW/530 hp, which ranks it alongside a current BMW V8 combustion engine. Its instantaneous power delivery gives the BMW i4 standout performance attributes and exceptional efficiency.

The fifth generation of BMW eDrive also brings a newly designed high-voltage battery with the very latest battery cell technology. The version of the battery developed for the BMW i4 impresses with its extremely slim construction and optimized energy density. It weighs roughly 550 kilograms, has an energy content of around 80 kWh and achieves an operating range of up to 600 km (373 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

All in all, fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology sets new standards in terms of power density, efficiency and range in locally emission-free driving.

Production of the new i4. Series production of the new BMW i4 will begin in 2021 at the BMW Group’s main plant in Munich. This means that, in the future, combustion-engined vehicles, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles will be manufactured on the same assembly line in Munich.

Integrating the BMW i4 into the existing production system represents a challenging task for Plant Munich. The body concept of the BMW i4 differs from the architectures of the vehicle models produced at the plant to date due to the need to accommodate its high-voltage battery. Approximately 90 per cent of the existing production equipment in the body shop can be incorporated into the process, i.e. adapted to manufacture of the i4. However, the remaining ten per cent – especially the machinery involved in building the rear structure – will need to be newly built.

A separate new piece of equipment will be fitted in the assembly halls for installation of the high-voltage battery, as the battery needs to be fitted in the car from below. A particular challenge in the conversion/installation process are the crowded structures of the assembly halls. Working within these tight confines, old machinery will have to be removed and new equipment installed and brought on stream within a six-week period. This requires long-term planning and precise implementation.

The X70 will be available for sale in 3rd or 4th weeks of December 2020.

> It will be CBU/ import from Malaysia.

> Al-Haj Group is the local partner.

> As per Auto Policy, company will import 100 CBU for launch purposes at subsidized 50% duty structure.

> The company has planned X70 as CBU for three variants for Pakistani market.

> Executive 2WD, Premium 2WD, Premium AWD.

> As of today, there are four dealerships planned and will be operational in the next few weeks.

> 2 in Karachi, 1 in Lahore and 1 in Islamabad.

> The company will add more dealer network soon.

Public Viewing and Expected Price:

> X70 will go on display sometime mid-December 2020 for public viewing.

> Once the company will sell 100 CBU units, it will fulfil further orders, after establishing local CKD assembly.

> Any further import of the same model above 100 units, will attract full duty and that would not be cost-effective.

> June 2021 onwards, a local assembled X70 is planned.

> Means expect a longer wait time, in case you missed the introductory units.

> No idea for the price for the X70, expect it to be around 5 to 6 Million range

> The CBU units will be very well equipped and built, time will tell if same goes for CKD.

> Possible spec sheet for CBU attached. The sheet says Premium 2WD [ right column ], but there will be a Premium AWD for Pakistani market as well. Concentrate under Executive 2WD and Premium 2WD.

> Proton/ Al-Haj MUST make sure that they sell these units on the advertised price, and dealersdon’tt take any advantage and exploit customers for premiums.

> These 100 units will be well equipped and there is due chance, the dealer plays fishy and funky and grab all these units and then try to sell it over black money.

> As a buyer, please stay away from any such unethical business practice/transaction.

Now let’s go over the technicalities of X70. It will be long, so if you are interested, then you must read it.

About Proton X70:

Proton is a national car company of Malaysia. In the past, it has been producing re-badged Suzuki and even Honda models and before than some Mitsubishi models were sold with Proton badge. In fact, Proton started their production with first car almost 36 years ago, based on Mitsubishi Lancer.

Proton Holding company at one time was owner of the Lotus cars. Currently, Geely car company from China, who also owns Sweden’s Volvo, has 49% shares in Proton. Proton has signed a joint venture with Al-Haj group for establishing an assembly line in Karachi for the CKD production of cars.

𝗫𝟳𝟬:

X70 is a C- segment SUV and basically a re-badged Geely Vehicle named” Geely Boyue”. It is famous by some other names depending on the markets. The company introduced it in China back in 2016. It got a face-lift in China and interior, and exterior got a makeover in the process.

The Proton X70 is basically the same Geely product with some minor exterior changes and a right-hand drive instead of Left as in China. It was introduced in Malaysia in early 2019 and imported from China. Proton has started local assembly in Malaysia recently for local supply. In Pakistan, X70 will compete with KIA Sportage as well as theSportage’ss non-identical twin, Hyundai Tucson and MG HS.

Foot Print of Proton X70:

X70 is based on Geely NL Modular platform, which is flexible architecture and can be used by multiple models depending on use. X70 is 4519mm long, 1831 mm wide and 1694 mm high. Wheelbase of 2670 mm while ground clearance is not confirmed but seems around 180 mm.

For understating the size, I will share Sportage dimensions which 4484 mm long, 1855 wide and 1635 mm high while ground clearance is 172mm. So, basically X70 is slightly bigger on outer dimensions comparing Sportage. X70 has a 60 liter fuel tank while Sportage has capacity for 2 extra liters. Sportage has a cargo capacity of 466L while X70 has 512L.

Engine and Transmission:

X70 is available with a 1.8L Turbo Petrol direct injection engine in Malaysia which is around 184hp. Max torque of 300Nm. It comes with a 7-speed DCT. Both transmissions & engine areGreely’ss / Volvo developed engines.

When it comes to Pakistan, there is a piece of surprising news.

The X70 for sale in Pakistan will have a 1.5L Turbo 3 cylinder engine. There will be 7-speed DCT with manual mode, which is also a Volvo and Geely jointly developed unit. The engine will have 174HP & 255 NM of torque.

This engine is Euro 6 compliant and one of the industry best engines. We can understand this from the fact that Volvo, which is premium brand, use the same engine in its one of the model in Europe. Proton is not offering the 1.5T for X70 in the Malaysian market. It is basically for export regions.

Globally, downsizing is the name of the game. BMW, Mercedes and many other brands are making smaller and efficient engines with higher performance levels. When things come to Pakistan, things get complicated. Proton extensively tested the 1.5T in Pakistan and road testing was ongoing for a very long time, driving it from Karachi to the extreme North regions.

The company has collected Driving data, by Protons own engineers. Obviously, they will tune engine for local fuel conditions, and some changes are planned to the exhaust system as well. There is possibility BUT not confirmed Proton require” “Premium fuel”. This is same for the MG HS.

Drivetrain and Other Components:

Disc brakes all around with ABS. McPherson front while a Multi-link rear suspension. Electric power steering, E-brake will be standard. Standard alloy wheels size of 225/60/18 will be for PK Units although In Malaysia even 1″” are offered on Premium model. I am sure Proton will select the right size for local road conditions.

Proton will offer X70 as AWD and FWD for Pakistan. It is interesting to note that Proton is not showing any AWD variant in Malaysian market because of low demand. There will be an Eco and Sport driving modes.

Interior:

As XC70 will be a CBU so, it will carry most of the features and options available in Malaysian vehicle. As the CBU will be specifically made for Pakistan, there is a due chance for the difference in features but at launch expect it to be identical to the overseas model. All three CBU variants for PK will have leather. The Premium version will have even the Nappa leather. The panoramic sunroof will be available on the top of the line Premium variant.

Digital LCD dashboard cluster will be standard on all trims. Steering wheels control, push-button start and welcome lights, power-folding mirrors, day-night rear view mirror are also available. Power windows , power driver adjustable seats which are ventilated too. Dual-zone climate control with rear vents are also standard on all trims which also have air purification system.

LCD and Infotainment:

“Standard LCD touchscreen infotainment system which has cell phone connectivity for music streaming. The infotainment system is GKUI [ Geely Smart Ecosystem infotainment system ] which is a smart voice recognition system, and you can order the vehicle to perform certain functions. Like even changing the climate control settings.

It will be a 4G WIFI capable system with GSM SIM slot, and certain online features can be integrated into the car. Proton link app can be used to remote control particular feature of the vehicle. There will be 8 speakers standard and Premium models will have 8 as well but with amplifier and sub-woofer.

This is a 5 seat vehicle as standard and no option for 2 extra seats to make it 7. However, the second-row seats can be folded down for larger cargo capacity. Power tailgate will be available on all expect base model and with foot sensor on the premium model.

Again, all this is on CBU we are getting as launch and introduction. Let’s hope when Al-Haj assembles it locally, we see all these features carried over.

Exterior of Proton X70:

The base model has halogen headlights with DRL while the upper trims will get LED and those will be adaptive headlights with auto dip and high feature. The car is a based on the Geely Boyue but to give it a Proton face, there is a different grill on the front which is called” infinite weave grill”.

This is inspired by traditional woodwork and carving, which is famous in Malaysia. LED taillights and two exhaust tips through the rear bumper. A standard wiper for rear screen and a spoiler with a stop lamp. Roof rails will be standard.

Safety in Proton X70:

When it comes to safety, this is where X70 will be the champion. Six airbags standard on all trims. ABS, Auto brake hold, Brake Assist, Hill assist, EBD, Traction control will be standard. TPMS / Tire Pressure Monitoring System will also be available.

The premium model will also have “ADA” which is an Advanced Driver Assistance System and a set of active safety features. This will be first of its kind offered by a company on a brand new vehicle in this category. It will consist of lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, auto high beam and autonomous braking.

The base model will have a regular reverse camera, but the premium model will have 360 view camera system. The Proton X70 is an Asian NCAP tested vehicle with a 5-star rating.

We can say that X70 will be a much safer vehicle in a test comparing the locally assembled Sportage and Tucson, but again, the X70 is CBU at launch; we will know the real deal on this topic when mass production of CKD starts locally. Time will tell if Al-Haj keeps all those features and equipment on the locally assembled vehicle or cut down on it to be price competitive against the competition.

Pricing of Proton X70:

The 1.5T engine is the first indicator that Protonwant’ss to be price competitive at least at the launch with their introductory CBU. X70 will come with features which the competitor lacks in the segment. I think that Proton will price X70 between 5 to 6 Million range or maybe a little higher.

Comparing the Sportage AWD, which is top of the line model from KIA, the premium X70 might be a little more expensive, but it will come with some exclusive features. Yes, Sportage has worldwide recognition, and it is sold in many markets when compared with X70. But keep in mind that X70 isGeely’ss vehicle with a Proton badge.

It has an engine, transmission which is co-developed with Volvo and is currently in use by Volvo as well. X70 has broken all the sales records in the Malaysian market, and Proton has a hard time completing orders. I think it will be an excellent addition to the market and can give a tough time to Sportage and Tucson or upcoming MG HS.

The sales and marketing strategy, after-sale service, support, customer satisfaction and friendly and welcoming dealer network will only guide and help Proton to succeed. As of now, there is minimal dealership network. Most probably the current FAW dealerships also become sales and service points of Proton although nothing is clear at this time.

A very good product can easily fail if there is no after-sales service. I am sure Proton and Al-Haj know that.

Inside Look: The Bad-Ass AEV JL370 Jeep Wrangler

American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) recently opened up the order banks for the company’s turnkey JL350 and JL370 conversions based on the hot-selling JL-generation Jeep Wrangler. AEV has a well-deserved reputation for making some of the most capable turnkey vehicles on the planet and is known for delivering enhanced off-road performance while not compromising the OE’s refined on-road manners. AEV designs, develops, and manufactures its own line of parts and whole-vehicle solutions using an OE approach to engineering, durability, and design.

In addition to the Jeep Wrangler JL models, AEV currently offers the Ram HD–based Prospector XL and the Chevy Colorado–based Bison. Past AEV vehicles include the Wrangler TJ–based Brute and Wrangler JK–based Brute Double Cab pickup trucks, the previous generation of Prospectors, and of course the well-known Wrangler JK offerings. We recently had a chance to poke around AEV’s 110,000-square-foot assembly facility and headquarters in Wixom, Michigan, where its conversion process happens and decided to take a closer look at what goes into an AEV JL370 as we walked by rows of Prospector XLs and Bisons in various states of assembly.

Starting with a Wrangler JL in either two- or four-door form, AEV converts them into JL370s through a host of changes. While a Sport or Sahara can be used as the base vehicle, the Rubicon’s high-clearance flares will be added (for $725). For this reason, and the Rubicon’s factory front and rear lockers, electronically disconnecting sway bar, and 4:1 transfer case, the vast majority of owners choose to start with that trim level.

The basic JL370 package, which commands a $15,600 premium over the cost of a Wrangler JL, includes the following upgrades:
