I hate when people dismiss the Phoebe thing as Scully simply having been jealous. She was his best friend first, and she did what any good friend would have
yeah it's pretty reductive, honestly. scully has been very protective of mulder since the pilot; the first 3 episodes of the show are literally her committing to him, holding a man hostage at gunpoint to find him, and cutting ties with her friends who make fun of him.
this was largely her arc in squeeze, after only having known him for a couple of weeks, as she defends him to colton multiple times
and, in the end, concludes that she would rather be “on the side of the victim” with mulder than climb the ladder with her classmates, and tells colton to fuck off the next time he’s rude about her partner
in ghost in the machine, she's disapproving of jerry from the moment they meet, knowing literally nothing about him except that he used to work with mulder
and she instantly recognizes the profile that jerry presents as mulder's work, whispering to him to ask if that's his, to which he replies "forget it, no" and then later fibs and says that jerry apologized for stealing it (once you tell your best friend you can't go back lol)
all of these examples pre-date her behavior in fire, and are episodes where she's put in situations navigating mulder around other men
y'all remember the first time she met krycek and just flat out refused to shake his hand lmao
i touched on this a little bit in my post on fire, but scully really was just so enthralled by him from the very beginning. she grew up on a military base with her navy captain father and two brothers, and her only relationships have been with older men in power.
she instantly is so aligned with mulder and that there's something different in him than she's used to, but she's aware that the openness and softness that she's so drawn to in him makes him more vulnerable, and she's desperate to protect it
in beyond the sea, the very next episode after fire, she screams at boggs that if mulder dies she'll gas him into hell herself, and boggs tells her that he's tasted the afterlife.
that it's a cold and dark place, and mulder's looking in on it now. she replies, "it might be a cold dark place for you, but it's not for mulder"
she knows him, and she's so moved by him and what he wants to do in the world. these are the values that she left medicine to follow.
"jealousy" honestly doesn't even compare to the kind of ferocious protectiveness that she feels towards him from the very start, she really doesn't trust anyone around him for anything. they can't possibly get it like she does, if they treat him that way.
he may not care if people call him names or steal from him or try to make him walk through fire, but he really is just her best friend. and she can't stand it.
#she shares him with the world only reluctantly#literally her found treasure that she wants to hide away in the basement#she is sooo funny about it tho like she truly doesn't fucking play#she's 5 feet tall in heels but she'll fucking kill you#remember when she found out he was just talking to an entomologist and she literally got on an airplane and was there the next day#i literally only talked about season 1 in this post#she does this for 25 years#PLEASE do submit any and all inquiries to speak to him or breathe his air to miss dana scully!!#she really just does feel like no one else GETS it like she's the only one who understands this wonder that she's stumbled across#and also as far as how closed off she is towards his old partners or girlfriends even before meeting them it's just likeee#look at him#you can deduce that his last relationships have not gone well#of course she's super wary from the get go#the man is not the way he is because the people in his life have been kind#and she just reads him and how he's really feeling so lightning fast#she knows when something is getting to him or he's uncomfortable#even when he stays in the situation#anyway#she's soooo perfect#and so are y'all thank you for the ask!!#asks#scully#kae meta

never again thoughts...
first of all, the airing order controversy: at the end of the day I really don’t think it matters that much. I can understand as an actor gillian being pissed about it bc it would definitely have had an influence on how she played it if it were the other way originally, but weirdly, I think it actually comes across equally as well both ways. as scully says in the final scene, it’s about her life, not the fear of death, and it makes sense that she would be contemplating her choices whether or not she suspected she had cancer, especially in the context of episodes like herrenvolk and tunguska/terma where she and mulder very much were going in circles. I do think her impulsive actions (though not necessarily the thought behind them) make a bit more sense if she’s worried about possibly having cancer, but I can also see them simply as a way to get back at mulder lol. the only issue with the original order I think is that her exasperation in leonard betts makes more sense as a build up to never again instead of as a result of it, and brings the tension between her and mulder up to a climatic boiling point in memento mori instead of a gradual cooling off.
I also think (as a mulder defender) that on rewatch he’s not nearly as bad in this episode as I remember, or as fandom makes him out to be. sure, he’s definitely an asshole to scully in the final scene, but he is (rightfully or not) angry with her and definitely jealous. he’s also not great in the opening scene but it’s more of not really being aware of and attentive to scully’s feelings rather than outright malice towards her, and his vulnerability of “you don’t want it to be?” says sooo much, especially since he later calls scully from graceland just to check in and bc he wanted to share it with her 🥺 he’s already internalizing her words and trying to be better at not only thinking about her in the context of the x files.
I also know morgan and wong frequently love to use episode titles in their scripts, even if it sometimes feels heavy handed (such as in home), and it’s interesting to think about that in the context of scully’s character arc. she starts off the episode saying to mulder that she almost wishes that they were going in circles- instead it feels like an endless line of one step forward two steps back. but her conversation with ed jerse in the bar is about fathers and cycles, and of course she gets the ouroboros tattoo. in contrast, ed gets his tattoo to symbolize moving on with his life while acknowledging that he feels like he never really can. which is better, an endless straight line, or a never ending circle? and what it mean in the larger context of the x files’ themes of fate vs. free will? scully returning to her office in the final scene may be seen by some as a lack of agency, still caught up in the ouroboros, but her final conversation with mulder makes it clear (at least in my opinion) that she has ultimately reaffirmed her choice to be there. she may be stuck in the circle, but she’s made her choice to be, and mulder, for better or for worse, is stuck in there with her.
#having memento mori after this episode feels better imo too bc she has already reaffirmed her choice to stick with mulder#rather than feeling obligated to if it had happened directly after leonard betts#stuck in the circle but dragging mulder in there with her lol#this episode is such a important turning point in their relationship and kind of an inverse of scully's realization during quagmire#was gonna talk about that too but the post was getting too long lol maybe i'll do it later#txf#txf rewatch#the x files

war of the coprophages is actually *hilarious* i kind of love episodes where they’re in two different places and all they do is talk on the phone, whether necessary or not.
like mulder stumbles onto a strange case and he has to call scully to let her know & see what she thinks. he asks her to come up but she finds a plausible scientific/medical explanation for the roach related deaths. so he tells her not to come. but he calls again. she offers to come up, but he says no again because she’s probably right with her second theory for the most recent death (and like this one actually seems spot on — is ekmon’s real because damn).
and as the episode goes on, he calls her & calls her until she finally shows up. honestly because she seems *jealous*
it’s actually hilarious because she’s right this time but it’s also so fucking bizarre 😂
and the time when he’s trespassing on government property because they’re doing agricultural experiments in the area and she tries so desperately to get her words out fast enough to stop him. but she’s too late and he’s already doing it. so she sighs but then she’s just like ‘so what’s happening what do you see?’ because she secretly LOVES IT. and she becomes irrationally worried about the cockroaches he’s encountering.
honestly hilarious.
AND IN WALKS BAMBI. can’t wait for scully’s jealousy.
the way mulder hates bugs is comical. like what a baby. i mean yeah, they’re roaches and bugs can be very gross. but i’m team bugs are so cool (though i don’t enjoy them near me if i’m inside lol only outside where they belong).
but bambi is crazy thanks
mulder finding bambi’s scientific detachment “refreshing” LMAO he means scully. he’s just trying to get information from bambi and scully ends up worried he actually likes her. baby boi is too interested in the case & the truth to even think about bambi seriously.
his paranoia about a roach getting into his ear or nose as he lays in bed — thank you. (i don’t actually mind bugs but the idea of them ON ME makes my skin crawl. i used to always have that feeling and it is truly awful.)
scully sleeping with her phone on her pillow waiting for mulder’s call — baby girl is whipped. she answers before the first ring is through. and all she can hear is “bambi”
SHE IS SO WORRIED HES GONNA SAY HE LIKES BAMBI but it’s just about bugs and she’s so relieved lmao and just tries to make him feel better about being afraid of bugs
“mulder, are you sure it wasn’t a girly scream?”
and again he hangs up on her & she’s so frustrated at not being with him. it’s harder to ditch her when she’s there with him.
grown men go running from the cockroaches and he goes toward them. what a tough guy.
SCULLY IS ALREADY UP AND PACKING TO GO “HELP” HIM ON THE CASE. so transparent.
mulder discovers every conclusion she’s drawn are in fact right. but she’s so insistent on coming up. ~because she couldn’t explain the cockroaches~ but they have metal exoskeletons?? like how is that possible
omg the robots. i forgot. they like mulder 😂😂
and he’s afraid of them like he is of the bugs cuz they act like bugs ahahahahaha
and this guy works for nasa, mulder’s favorite. so weird he ended up at the fbi & not nasa lol but what would the show be then? (that might be an au i could read)
i love a gathering of nerds
THEY REALLT HAD A ROACH CROSS THE SCREEN TO CUT TO THE GROCERY STORE MOB wow i hate them — never noticed it before but wow that just got me 🤣 (okay maybe i do hate bugs but it doesn’t stop me finding them interesting & wanting to save them)
“we’re all gonna be bleeding from our nipples”
the bottle of insect repellant or killer, whatever it is, is the same as scully’s flea shampoo for queequeg. never noticed that either.
the way she picks up the box of candy & eats one is hilarious. quiet comedy. like when she answers mulder’s call, tells queequeg to stay, and when’s he turns around, the lil pup is gone. covered in suds running around her apartment. classic.
“maybe you can confirm this with your dr. bambi”
and he still thinks it’s aliens lmfao bambi is like what the fuck
“mulder i think you’ve been in this town too long”
absolutely hilarious he brings bambi with him, makes her wait outside, and then scully fatefully meets them at the plant. scully is so annoyed that she calls him fox — the way she mouths his name. it’s cute that she thinks it’s confirmation he likes her.
“this is no place for an entomologist”
and really, dr. eckerle is just a bit crazy — “how do i know you’re not a cockroach?”
idiot goes and blows the place up, covering them in manure. again, the comedy.
“you two oughta go home and get some rest. you look pooped.” HUMOR.
and then bambi is so taken dr. ivanov. hilarious. she understands him.
“smart is sexy. think of it this way mulder, by the time there’s another invasion of artificially intelligent dung-eating robotic probes from outer space, maybe their uber-children will have devised a way to save our planet.”
“you know, i never thought i’d say this to you, scully…but you smell bad”
LMFAO the jealousy & defensiveness.
i feel like inner their reports explained to me — they’re so strange every time.
but anyway. the final scene with that funky looking roach where he doesn’t want to kill it on the plate & waits for it to move — his fear reaction is beautiful.
#this wasn’t even supposed to be a real post#but here i am#txf txt#mulder and scully#the x files#war of the coprophages

“Why did people hate the revival?”
“Coming directly off the pain of Season 9 that was never addressed, this is absolutely so well done.”
“How can there possibly be ANY ambiguity left about Scully and Mulder?”
“They have literally referred to William as Mulder’s child multiple times.”
“FUCK.”
“This is...a lot to unpack.”
“Mulder’s hair has taken a novedive since MSI”
“His fuckability is going down while Scully’s is climbing back up.”
“I’ve been waiting 23 years to say that. DEAD. BURIED. CREMATED.”
“Who are these fucks?”
“That face. I cannot.”
“Really, why did people hate this?”
“This is completely tolerable compared to 8/9 angst.”
“I am absolutely living for this. ABSOLUTELY. LIVING. FOR. THIS.”

5x12. “Bad Blood” - X-Files Rewatch
This post is going to be a bit different than all the others. Because Bad Blood is just so special. Above pictures are (some of) the funniest contrasts in the stories told by Scully (left) and Mulder (right). I’ll include others in my summary below the cut!
"That's not the way it happened at all. I mean, what are you afraid of? That if you tell it the way it really happened, that you'll look like an idiot, like me?" - Mulder, to Scully
Here's some opinion as opposed to observation. Bad Blood is maybe the best episode. It is just so brilliant. It's fantastic to see the story from both Mulder and Scully's perspectives, and see them in a more humorous and exaggerated light. They are both inaccurate in their own ways, but I think overall Scully's side is probably more correct, Mulder's being coloured by wanting to exaggerate his side because he loves LOVES trolling Scully and he's a bit miffed at her inaccuracies.
The teaser has to be the absolute best of the whole show. Well, except for all things.
Their facial expressions this entire episode.
Mulder kicking the garbage can. XD I love love LOVE this. Throughout the whole show you see him lashing out with physical violence when he's frustrated, and you see it manifested in such a light-hearted manner here.
"I didn't do the ... (She makes a stabbing motion) with the thing."
Gillian covering her face trying not to laugh. Do we have bad blood bloopers? I'm sure they are wonderous.
***
SCULLY’S VERSION
"C'mon Scully, get those little legs moving."
Mulder admiring the dead guy's clothes. He's so innappropriate haha.
Leaning close over the dead body.
Mulder's jealousy over Scully's flirtation with the Sheriff.
"Dana" LOL
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. What am I even looking for?" - Scully (Mulder puts his hands on her shoulders.) "I don't know." - Mulder
Some Sheriff Hartwell flirtation analysis/relationship analysis
Scully enjoying attention from an attractive guy. We saw in Chinga, trying to get Mulder to react to her subtle hints of giving a gift to a "guy". He didn't take the hint. I'm SURE she's exaggerating her attraction in the story to make Mulder jealous. Also possibly still pissed at him, wanting to get a reaction out of him. A meaningless fling would take some of her pain away, perhaps, because he doesn't really matter to her - there are no emotions beyond lust. She enjoys being desired, as would any woman. Pursuing something with Mulder is dangerous because of how strong her feelings are. After Emily - she's hesitant to risk anything, to take any chances emotionally, because of how much pain it caused her to love someone only to lose them so shortly afterwards.
During Mulder's tale, he tells Scully "Never say I never did nothin' for ya", giving her some alone time with the Sheriff. indicating he's still not thinking he and Scully could ever be together. He thinks she deserves a normal guy, or at least someone who isn't him.
I love the autopsy scenes. Scully talking about stomach contents like it sounds delicious, then ordering the same thing later. Scully is WEIRD you guys, and I love it. Someone like this just ... doesn't stop being weird. Doesn't change specialties so drastically. She LOVES this shit you guys.
"I just put money in the magic fingers!"
Jumping on the bed with her and laughing evilly. Poor Scully.
When Scully figures out the pizza was laced, her concerned gasp and "Mulder!"
Doctoring him in the room, touching his face when he's lying on the floor.
"Shaft!" LOL
Standing close when they argue about her version.
*** MULDER’S VERSION
Scully's look making Mulder feel like a moron. He's so nice and concilliatory in his version, haha.
"Well, it's obviously not a vampire." - Scully "Well, why not?" - Mulder "Because they don't exist?" - Scully
“Hoo boy.” - Scully, at Sheriff Hartwell
Mulder giving the Sheriff buck teeth. 😆 Jealous much?
Prattling off knowledge about the history of vampires. He knows how to stretch out a tale - keeps delaying telling Scully about the meaning of the shoelaces.
Scully's "Why skip ahead? What happened then? (silence) Mulder? You shot out the tires, and what then?" XD Mulder (AND the Sheriff) can't shoot, which is where the trope comes from perhaps? Contrast with Scully's incredible marksmanship from the previous episode.
Mulder's puppy dog eyes when he comes to Scully's room all muddy.
"What do you mean you want me to do another autopsy?! And why do I have to do it right now?! I just spent hours on my feet doing an autopsy, all for you. I do it all for you, Mulder. You know, I haven't eaten since 6:00 this morning, and all that was, was a half a cream cheese bagel, and it wasn't even real cream cheese, it was light cream cheese. And now you want me to run off and do another autopsy? What the hell happened to you?"
"Finally you left" ouch. 😥 Mulder's pretty bitter about the Sheriff so he's definitely making Scully look worse than she is. TBF Scully made Mulder look pretty random and nonsensical in hers.
Mulder using Scully's room/bathroom. In his tanktop + boxers. *heart eyes* Also, they agree on pizza toppings. IT'S MEANT TO BE!!!
Concedes that he ate her dinner. 😆
Her "Creep" in Mulder's version of the phone call Scully got at the morgue, haha.
*** AFTER THEIR STORIES
Walking close in the cemetery. Putting his arm around her neck when giving her the alone time with the Sheriff.
Drugged Scully.
Mulder riding the coffin.
Examining her neck at the end. Where des he put his hands after that??
"That is ... essentially, exactly the way it happened." - Mulder "Essentially." - Scully
The ending with Skinner must be EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY FINISH A CASE. Which makes it funnier. 😆

Dumb Summary By Me: A computer kills people because it got insulted.
Monster: The computer? Brad? The glorified superior dude?
Favourite Quote Moment: Mulder shoving Scully up an airduct.
Would I Recommend It: It’s not too bad so yeah.
My Initial Thoughts: I can’t remembered if I watched this the first time round but I like it.
Episode Title is Said: ❌
State: Virginia.
Special Minor Character of the Episode: Jerry Lamana.
Special Prop of the Episode: Shoes.
Inappropriate Mulder Humour: 😞
Inappropriate 90’s Terminology: 😞
Scully Favourite Sentence(s): 😞
Scully Doesn’t Suffer: 😊 (well, she does nearly get killed by a fan)
Mulder Drives: 😊
Scully Drives: 😊
Brief Case Appearance: 😊
Sharing Glasses: 😞
Scully Writes a Report: 😊
Scully Says OMG: 😊
Scully Autopsy: 😞
Scully Ditch: ❌
Scully Pyjamas: 😊 (purple ones)
Scully Wears A Skirt: 😊
Scully Smiles: 😊
Stupid Tiny Gun Watch: 😡
Mulder’s Hand on Scully’s Back: 😊
Mulder and Scully Talk on the Phone: 😞
Scully Costume Change Counter: 6.
As usual, my comments are under the cut.
This episode just screams 90s.
You can tell this dude is a nerd because he doesn’t wear suits.
Yikes that line delivery.
Xfiles really needs to come with an epilepsy warning…
Fancy sink.
So moral of the episode- don’t have electronic bathrooms.
Why is their a camera in the bathroom?
Why does he have a shower in the bathroom, does he live there?
Why does he even have his own personal bathroom, is that normal?
Closest xf ever came to having a Halloween episode- this is your episode.
I really don’t understand why she’s jealous/mad here. It makes no sense. Jerry, as far as I’m aware, isn’t a Phoebe or a Diana- why are you angry that he worked with him?
A basement office with no heat or windows- that must be fun all year round. I might write a fic…
Yo she FALLS.
And you’re stuck in a lift.
If a lift started working again after momentarily breaking I think you’d let the dude know.
Okay so the camera isn’t facing the shower but still…why is there a camera in the bathroom?
Privacy didn’t exist in the 90s.
Aw Mulder’s nods.
Scully tidies up Mulder’s desk one day and he gets annoyed because he can’t find anything anymore.
Aw Mulder got his work stolen, that’s sad.
It’s actually really sad how he doesn’t want to say anything about it, too.
Jerry a cnut.
What is with these blazer to skirt ratios?
There’s too much feet out.
What is she actually carrying in that briefcase? Is it necessary?
Miss Scully.
What the fuck is a “scruffy mind”
More stuff just keeps getting added to these reports she writes.
Also why is she still wearing heels? You take that shit off the moment you get in.
Is this actually possible?
The voice is creepy.
Nah I think Mulder’s got and gets it worse.
How did they come to this conclusion by doing that?
Lol drawing on the computer screen. I don’t care if the screens are glass, it’s stupid and unnecessary.
Is this dude’s house necessary?
He’s so hunched over. That’s not good for your back.
What an effective security guard.
What’s with the weird camera angle?
I’m not getting in lifts again.
Well I think he’s dead.
Lol and he actually did go back.
It feels weird when Deep Throat appears in MoW episodes.
Should I do a death toll? Death counter? Is that morbid?
It’s weird seeing a season 3 outfit on a season 1 Scully.
Was Mulder actually allowed to get that laptop into the prison?
Where did he whip that from?
Just another day where Mulder and Scully almost die in a car accident.
She nearly falls up the stairs. Mood.
Mulder just saved Scully’s life.
That would still shock him tho wouldn’t it?
It’s so simple that it’s stupid.
Yo remember that time Mulder shoved Scully up an airduct? I wanna see that conversation.
She also should have went up more airducts. Or more tight Scully sized spaces.
I’m not a fan of these unnecessary weird camera angles.
All the papercuts ew.
Can you imagine crawling all that way just to be blown backwards?
Aside from the murder fan beneath, that looks fun.
Mulder’s backpack.
Surprise, Motherfucker!
Surprise, Motherfucker!
Scully’s had a TIME.
That’s why she was never shoved up another airduct. Mulder tried to and she threatened to walk away.
The voice goes from creepy and plain stupid.
Scully cross chain changes all the time.
Hey remember Jerry? He dead.
That’s a big ass ugly phone.
So what happened to Brad? Is he still in prison complaining that he has to wear shoes?
Final Thoughts: I actually really like this episode. It’s no way a good one but it would probably be at the top of my list of meh episodes.

what if emily took to mulder more than she did scully??? would scully get jealous and would it create some msr tension??? or not??
i dunno if this was necessarily a prompt, but i ran with it lol. also inspired by the awesome anons i got the other day.
–
1. It’s rough going at first, of course. Of course it is. Scully doesn’t expect everything to be perfect right away, not with everything that Emily has been through. But she tries her best to make things familiar, make herself familiar. While the courts examine her petition, she stays in California, making visits to Emily first in the hospital and then in the children’s home. (She flies back home once, after a reappearance by Modell that no one bothers to tell her about that leaves Mulder nearly hysterical after he sees a vision of her death. Skinner calls her and she flies home for all of one day, hugging him tight on his apartment floor. The next day, they both end up back in San Diego after Skinner recommends that he take some time off.) Over the next month, she goes to visit Emily every day, coloring with her on the floor, reading her sticky-paged picture books that she selects from the shelf. Mulder comes too, sometimes, and he’s typically as shy and quiet as Emily, but he can usually make Emily laugh. It gets to the point where she offers her own shy smile around the thumb inserted in her mouth when she sees Scully coming. It always makes Scully’s heart swell.
When the adoption petition is finally approved, she ends up bursting into tears in the courtroom and wiping her eyes on the sleeves of her jacket in the hall. Mulder, waiting outside on a bench, passes her tissues and wraps an arm gingerly around her shoulder.
But when she tells Emily that she’s going to be coming home with her, Emily’s face falls. She whispers, “Is my mommy coming back?” And Scully’s heart breaks, just a little.
It’s perfectly normal, she tells herself as she tries to explain things to Emily, as she wipes Emily’s tears away. These things take time. These things take time. Emily doesn’t see her as a mother yet; she barely even knows her. But she doesn’t scoot away when Scully leans in to hug her; she grips her coat with one small, determined hand, wipes her face on Scully’s blouse. Scully tells herself there’s hope.
2. Emily is quiet and distant at some times, but clingy at others. When they leave California, she looks at Scully like she is a lone rock in a vast ocean; she leans into her side and holds onto her hand like it’s a life preserver, hiding her face when strangers speak to either of them. Her eyes grow wide when Scully leaves a room, much less the house, and though she never protests, it’s clear she doesn’t want her to leave. She wakes up crying sometimes, and Scully, sleeping lightly, will often hear her and wake up and go lie down beside her, stroking her hair and whispering to her gently or singing tunelessly until she falls back asleep. Other times, she doesn’t hear and wakes up to find Emily climbing into her bed. All the advice she’s heard is says to put the child back into their own bed after they’ve calmed down, but Scully finds she can’t. She lets Emily fall asleep curled up on the other pillow, her head resting sweetly on her hand, and she finds they both sleep better that way. (She still fears the possibility that someone will come for Emily again.)
Emily asks about her parents sometimes still, although it lessens as time goes on. She brings them up often—Mommy never let me watch that or Daddy liked that book or Mommy never made me eat that. It makes Scully feel insecure, sometimes, but she never says a word. She asks questions about the Sims, and listens to everything Emily says. She brings out the pictures and toys and other various things they brought from the Sims’ house, and Emily’s face almost always lights up. She tries, and she thinks she’s mostly succeeding, but she can’t shake the selfish feeling that she is living in the Sims’ shadow. She tries not to think about it. She loves her daughter so much, and she wants her to be comfortable, and she can’t imagine going through what Emily has gone through, so she tries as hard as she can. It is worth it, for every time Emily smiles at her, or hugs her, or clings to her hand with they leave the house, hiding her face in her side when they talk to strangers.
Interestingly enough, Emily seems to have the same attachment to Mulder, to some degree. Scully thinks it may be due to the frequency of Mulder’s visits to the children’s home, or a spark of familiarity where she is surrounded by strangers in a strange town. Or maybe due to Mulder’s utter goofiness, the ability he has to make them both laugh by making funny faces or telling them long, elaborate stories or coloring ridiculous pictures with Emily on the floor. He starts coming over more frequently, having dinner with them, watching cartoons on the floor with Emily. Watching them together makes Scully smile almost absently. Like the two of them together is something she hasn’t quite acknowledged she wants.
Slowly, slowly, it gets easier.
3. As six months pass, Emily starts to become more comfortable with her surroundings. She still has crying jags and nightmares sometimes, and she still comments on her parents, but Scully can tell that she’s beginning to adjust. She starts enjoying daycare instead of outright hating it. She starts being able to tolerate Scully leaving—she’ll stay with Mulder or her mom, and she’ll usually ask Scully when she’ll be back in a solemn voice, but she doesn’t cling to her side and silently beg her not to go. She sleeps through the night most of the time, she begins to talk more—and frequently, in a way that reminds Scully of Missy and makes her misty-eyed—and begins to tell Scully, in no uncertain terms, what she does and doesn’t want. She calls her Dana instead of Mommy and Scully tries not to dwell too hard on it. She tells herself that it doesn’t matter if her daughter ever calls her Dana. She is here, and that’s all that matters: that Scully have protect and love and raise her daughter.
Mulder is over frequently, too, partially by his and Scully’s own prerogative—her position on the X-Files has shifted a bit, in that she doesn’t travel but will often consult via phone when he does (and he doesn’t travel much either, anymore), and she’s largely relegated to autopsies, both for him and occasionally for other parts of the Bureau, but she’ll work a case with him if it’s nearby; but they frequently end days at the office with one or the other offering: I’ll make you dinner. I have a new movie for Em. We want to finish that Candy Land game; I think Emily is going to kick your ass. But partially, it is because of Emily. She asks frequently, “Can Mulder come over tonight?” And since Scully typically has no arguments with that herself, she will frequently pass on the message.
Emily never questions the role of Mulder in their lives. Scully wonders if she would in a different situation—if she thought of Scully as a mother, or if she were a little older and a little more knowledgeable about romance (she and Mulder are just friends, of course, but Emily never asks if they’re anything more). But she never does. Mulder seems to be as much a part of her orbit as Scully is, part of her daily routine. She gets excited when Mulder comes over, her eyes lighting up when she hears him knock on the door. She talks about things she wants to tell him or show him, draws pictures for him at daycare, asks him to come play with her or watch TV with her; Mulder and Scully don’t get a moment to themselves until after Emily’s gone to bed. It’s something that Scully thinks she’s unconsciously wanted—for the two of them, for the three of them to be close—ever since Mulder sat down on the floor beside them that first day and made a face to make Emily laugh. She wants this. And she’s utterly ashamed when it starts to bother her, the way that Emily anticipates Mulder’s presence—the way she almost seems to prefer him.
It’s to be expected, she tells herself. Mulder is fun in a way that she can’t be; she’s the parental figure, she has to hand out discipline and punishments and make Emily eat her vegetables. It should be inevitable, she should’ve expected it. But some dark emotion like jealousy keeps rising up in her throat at the whole thing. She doesn’t understand why, except sometimes she wishes it could be both of them doing these things, instead of feeling like she’s on the outside looking in. Or that maybe, sometimes, she could be her daughter’s first choice. That she could be the fun one.
It’s an emotion that somewhat disgusts her and she tries her hardest to tamp it down; she doesn’t want to lose either of them, doesn’t want to drive Mulder away or make him feel unwelcome. She tells herself that she should be grateful he didn’t stop wanting to spend time with her, grateful that something makes her daughter happy. And she tells herself it’ll be fine, it’ll be just fine, over and over again until the night when she offers to put Emily to bed and read her a story, on the tail end of a movie night with Mulder. And Emily, clutching her blanket in her hands with her eyes fixed on the screen, says, “I want Mulder to do it.”
4. Scully, who has read to Emily every night since she brought her home, pretends that this doesn’t hurt immensely. She forces a smile, a wobbly smile, and says, “Okay, sweetie. If… if Mulder is okay with that.”
Emily, still clutching her blanket and the bear that Mulder bought her in the hospital, doesn’t notice a thing. But there must be a tremor or something in Scully’s voice, because Mulder looks right at her. She looks away immediately, mentally chiding herself, and says, “I’ll go get the book. Do you want Where The Wild Things Are?”
“Uh-huh,” Emily says absently.
Scully turns towards the hall and walks away, to Emily’s room down the hall. She picks the book off the shelf, an old, tattered copy that had belonged to her and her siblings. She holds it in one hand and digs her fingernails into her other palm, bites back tears. Tell herself, You are being ridiculous. You are being incredibly selfish. Bites her lip hard and blinks. And then she hears footsteps behind her. Feels a heavy, gentle hand on her shoulder. Hears Mulder’s soft voice: “Scully?”
She bites down on her lip too hard, forces a smile and turns to him and offers the book.
He doesn’t take it. He reaches out and covers her hand with his, and says in a strained voice, “Scully, I don’t want to impose…”
“You’re not imposing,” she says determinedly, and it’s the truth. But still. She sniffles, unable to stop herself.
He shakes his head. “Scully, this is your life, and your daughter, and I… I am so incredibly honored you’ve let me be a part of it, but I… I told myself that I wasn’t going to make it about me. And I don’t want to…”
“Mulder, it’s not you,” she blurts, simultaneously embarrassed and disgusted with herself. “You are not imposing. We want you here. It’s just…” She trails off, looking down at her shoes. The words stuck in her throat. The book feels too stiff in her hand.
Mulder steps closer, his feet creaking on the floorboards. He puts a hand on her shoulder. “Just what, Scully?” he asks softly.
She shuts her eyes. It’s silly and selfish and she doesn’t want to say it, but she speaks anyway, quietly. “I don’t know how to be with her,” she whispers. “I’m not as good with her as you are, and I’m not sure… how to be better.”
He doesn’t say anything. She keeps her eyes shut, her face turning red; she regrets having told him. She’s horribly embarrassed.
Behind them, she hears more feet on the floorboards. “Mulder?” Emily asks. “Dana?”
Scully steps away from Mulder, swiping quickly under her eyes and smiling broadly at her daughter. She loves her so much. She’s not sure she’ll ever really know how to do this, but she loves her so much. “Hi, honey,” she says in as cheerful a voice as she can muster. “Mulder was just helping me find the book.”
“Oh. Okay.” Emily hugs her bear, looking between them questioningly. “You gonna read, Mulder?”
Mulder clears his throat once. Twice. Scully won’t look at him, so she has no idea what he’s thinking. But she seems to falter a bit at what he says next. He says, “I’m sorry, Em, but I’ve got a sore throat. I don’t think I can read tonight.”
Scully blinks. “Oh,” Emily says, her lip jutting out in a pout.
“But…” Mulder adds, enticingly, and she finally looks at him. He gives her a soft, reassuring look before turning back to Emily. “I’ve heard Dana’s a great reader,” he says. “Right?” Emily nods. “So what if…” he continues, “Dana reads to us tonight and I read another night?”
For a second, Scully is nervous all over again. But Emily simply shrugs. “Okay,” she says, and walks over to the bed. She climbs into bed and slides over to the wall in their typical routine before looking over at them expectantly.
Relieved (and still a bit embarrassed), Scully goes and slides in beside her, an arm draped over her daughter’s slim shoulders. Emily motions expectantly, and Mulder comes and sits on the end of the bed, his back against the wall, Scully’s toes against his thigh. “Where The Wild Things Are, huh?” he says. “So this book must be all about you.” He points to Emily.
Emily giggles, snuggling into the pillows. Scully feels an immense wave of gratefulness wash over her; she wants to thank him, but doesn’t want to do it with Emily there. So she simply shoots him a grateful look, her eyes growing damp. He smiles broadly at her before nodding encouragingly at the book.
Scully reads, the same book they’ve read a hundred times before. When Emily falls asleep, her head on Scully’s arm, she halfway thinks she’d never like to move. She slides out from under her and kisses her good night on her forehead before exiting the room softly behind Mulder.
Outside her room, Mulder puts a gentle hand in hers. “These things take time, Scully,” he tells her, the same thing she’s been telling herself, “but things are gonna get easier. I know it.” He squeezes her hand. “You’re an amazing mother.”
Tears well up, to the point where she almost thinks she’s going to cry again. She hugs Mulder instead, suddenly and tightly, gratefully. And he hugs her back. His hold is reassuringly strong and she tells herself once again that it doesn’t matter, and that Mulder is right. Things are going to get easier. She hopes, she prays they will get easier. She wraps her arms tighter around Mulder’s ribs.
5. But Mulder’s reassurance doesn’t quite feel real until a night nearly two months later. She’s dead asleep, exhausted from a late night of paperwork, when the sound of Emily’s sobs cut through the haze. It takes her a few minutes to fully comprehend what is happening, but once she does, she’s stumbling to her feet, tangled up in blankets and in a panic. When she reaches her door, she can hear the sound of Mulder, who has taken up residence on the couch, soothing Emily. “Shhh, it’s okay. It’s okay. What happened?”
“I had a nightmare,” Emily mumbles, sniffling and hiccuping. Scully pulls her bedroom door open; from her angle, she can just see Mulder on the couch, comforting her daughter. “I want Mommy,” she sobs, rubbing at her eyes.
This isn’t an uncommon sentiment, of course, but Scully can practically hear Mulder’s hesitance from here. “I know,” he says finally, rubbing her back. “I know you miss your mom…” Scully, sympathy coursing through her, begins to move towards the living room, ready to comfort her daughter and soothe her back to sleep.
But Emily shakes her head. “No,” she says, her voice stubborn and so much like Melissa’s it hurts. Scully steps into the living room, and Emily turns to her and gasps, “Mommy!” before launching herself at Scully, wrapping her arms around Scully’s legs and pressing her wet face into her thighs. “Mommy,” she mumbles, her voice full of tears. “Had a bad dream.”
For a few seconds, Scully is frozen, unsure of what to do. Mulder’s eyes are wide with surprise, but encouraging. And that seems to push her into activeness, into movement. She bends down and hugs her daughter tight, stroking her fine hair and whispering soothing words. She scoops her up and holds her close, sitting on the couch so that she can rock her back and forth. Emily clings to her like a briar, her limbs tight around her torso, her face buried in her shoulder. She comforts her daughter on the rumpled couch, Mulder at their side, until Emily falls asleep curled up in her arms. Scully kisses her temple, presses her nose to her head and breathes in the scent of her No More Tears shampoo. She feels close to tears herself.
Mulder covers the two of them with a blanket, leans in to drop a kiss on Scully’s forehead. “I told you, Scully,” he whispers. “You’re an amazing mother.”
She laughs, half-leaning into him as she adjusts her daughter in her arms. It’s silly, she thinks, but sitting here now, on the couch with her partner and her daughter, this is the first time she’s really felt like one.

Hi, I love your blog and your analysis on episodes. I have a question, When Mulder returned back from the dead in S8, do you think he was bothered by the fact of Scully's partnership/friendship with Doggett because he feared Scully cared too much for John and maybe Mulder was a tad jealous??
Thank you Anon. :) Alright - let’s get into this one.
Mulder was definitely uncomfortable with the fact Scully had a partner while he was gone. In Three Words he says:
He says this before he even knew about Agent Doggett, so you can imagine how that feeling was only compounded when he finds out he was effectively replaced.
That incredulous look on his face says it all. The world moved on without him, even Scully from his perspective - standing in front of him pregnant, no less. She decides not to talk to him about the paternity of the baby because Mulder is clearly overwhelmed and struggling to cope after his abduction - she can certainly relate to that.
So it stands to reason that she would decide not to pile anything more onto him, such as revealing he’s about to become a dad.
Mulder clearly has no idea that he is the father of Scully’s baby in Three Words. When Langly alludes to the fact he might be the father, Mulder looks at Scully quizzically.
He doesn’t understand what Langly means - or at least, he acts like he doesn’t I imagine there is a part of him deep down that suspects the child is his, but he isn’t going to admit that. Which is fair enough when you think about it. The IVF failed and yes, he and Scully had sex, but he believes she is infertile and cannot conceive naturally, so he isn’t going to assume she got pregnant the old fashioned way.
Unfortunately, I think Scully not talking to Mulder about the baby to protect him actually ends up backfiring, because then Mulder is left to fill in the blanks. With no answers forthcoming, and being clearly unwilling to ask Scully outright, all he sees is that not only has his world completely changed, but that it went on just fine without him. He feels like the world left him behind.
Mulder is clearly uncomfortable the second he finds out John exists. He’s straight away willing to believe he was put there to undermine the X-Files despite Scully’s assurances to the contrary. In fact, I think it’s her assurances that bother him more.
Not only has this guy swept in and taken his place on the X-Files but he’s taken his place as Scully’s partner too, and now she’s defending him. No wonder he suddenly decides he wants to get back to work. He feels threatened by all these changes and wants to get back to where he feels he belongs before things fall further out of his grasp.
At first I’d say Mulder’s discontent is just about Doggett taking his place on the X-Files, and believing he is there to undermine the work, but then once Mulder realises that Doggett isn’t a bad guy, he still doesn’t like him. Why? Most likely because Mulder starts to pick up on how close Doggett and Scully are and he doesn’t like that either.
When Mulder is jealous is he certainly more subtle about it than Scully is, but he is clearly threatened by Doggett’s apparent relationship with Scully in this scene - close enough that he’d drop stuff off at her apartment, and close enough that he is on speaking terms with the landlord. Hmm.
Mulder even has a moment of anxiety regarding who the father of Scully’s baby is, possibly suspecting it is Doggett when the nurse asks if Doggett is the husband, to which he of course says no. But Mulder is eyeing him with clear trepidation. Wondering what exactly his relationship to Scully is.
When Scully later tells Mulder that Doggett is worth the effort, I think Mulder again experiences some jealousy - to see Scully have affection for this new man who has become her partner in his absence. It’s gotta be hard to see how much has changed; how much he has lost.
In a way, Mulder reacts to Doggett in a similar fashion to how Scully initially reacted to Diana. Wondering who this person is, and what their relationship is to their partner. Why is this person important, and can’t they just fuck off already so things can go back to how they used to be? lol
He sees the affection between Doggett and Scully goes both ways and feels threatened - and yes, a little jealous. There’s a great moment in Empedocles where this is perfectly illustrated. Mulder effectively steaks his claim and is quite territorial with Scully. It’s at the hospital when Mulder finds Doggett in Scully’s room watching over her sleep, and Mulder, with more than a slight twinge of irritation in his voice, calls Doggett out of the room.
Just look at his body language. Standing guard in front of her room, never budging from the door throughout their conversation. Arms crossed - defensive. He’s making a statement to Doggett, and I think Doggett knows it. The look he gives Mulder as he stalks out of the room, not to mention feeling the need to explain his presence in the room to Mulder.
These men are feeling each other out, working out where the other stands with each other and with Scully. Mulder is making it very clear where he believes Doggett’s place is. Outside the room, outside their world of two. There’s no room in here for a third.
Shame that Mulder didn’t realise this sooner with Diana, but hey ho.
Despite taking some steps towards mutual understanding in Empedocles and Vienen, Mulder is still a little threatened by Scully’s relationship Doggett in Alone.
When Mulder sees that Scully is upset about leaving Doggett alone working on the X-Files, he says:
A little flash of jealousy here. Seeing Scully worry about Doggett in the way she once worried about him when they worked together. He doesn’t want her to feel obligated to Doggett or the FBI anymore, he wants her to focus on their child and this new chapter of their lives.
Seemingly at this point Mulder is aware of the fact he is the father of Scully’s baby. Whether they talked about it or he just puts two and two together, we never know. But again his territorial behaviour emerges when Scully shows concern for Doggett. She paid her dues on the X-Files, he says. He wants her to leave the X-Files behind and worry about the little boy. Or girl? Mulder is out of the bureau as well, but he seems less than concerned about it. He seems to have accepted the idea that he’s leaving the X-Files in Doggett’s hands and that he is now embarking on a new chapter of his life with Scully.
He reaffirms this feeling later in the episode, when he catches Scully working on a case trying to find the missing Agent Doggett.
He’s frustrated that she feels obligated to Doggett. Jealous? Maybe… I think it’s more that he wants her to think of herself first for once, and of their child. This is what he’s wanted for her since he saw her with that baby in Requiem. He wants her to break away from the X-Files, and deep down I believe he wants to as well. The only way he can convince her to do that is by taking on the case himself, even though he’s no longer an FBI agent.
I’d say the final twinge of jealousy sparks when he discovers that Scully gave Doggett the Apollo 11 keychain. Saying to Scully…
But the keychain is the final piece of the puzzle that Mulder needed to put his fears about Scully and Doggett to rest. In discovering she gave him the keychain I think Mulder finally understands the true nature of their relationship. He knows what this Apollo medallion represents to Scully - teamwork, trust, partnership. That’s the bond she has with Doggett and I think Mulder finally understands that.
By the end of Alone, Mulder’s fears about Doggett are put to rest. I’d even go so far as to say that he comes to like the guy, and by the season finale, he clearly trusts him too.
Just look at how much more relaxed he is around Doggett at the end of Alone when Doggett mistakenly thinks Scully has gone into labour.
Oh God, how happy does Mulder look… I can’t deal with this. Honestly, what the hell were they thinking ruining this ending to the show? *sigh*
Anyway!
As a symbolic gesture, and a clear shift in Mulder’s view of Doggett, he gives the keychain back to him.
Even though Doggett suggests giving it to Agent Harrison, the sentiment on Mulder’s side is there. He finally accepts Doggett and is no longer threatened by his presence.
This jealousy saga, is finally at an end. Least we didn’t have to kill Doggett off to resolve this love triangle!

Everyone is talking about baiting themselves (and I totally get not wanting to get your hopes up at this point) but the frustrating thing for me is that the writers were the ones doing the “baiting”. They made the entire finale about Clarke reaching out to Bellamy for SIX. YEARS. and then they chose not to follow up on that. They had Clarke watching Bellamy make out with another girl, and had others call out their love. If the writers don’t commit to bellarke it’s on them, not us for seeing it.
Hi there fellow human! I agree 101% with you, tbh. I am a die hard blorke all the way to hell lol To me this baiting thing, in regards of bellarke, is just a joke. They are building bellarke, slowly, yeah, but they are. People get so frustrated sometimes, thinking the writers are mocking us... But it's their story, you know? They are the ones who developed their relationship, they thought of it and decided to go with it. They are totally writing it till the end, the end just happens to be a bit further than most shows. Specially because the 100 is not a romance. Bellarke may be the main relationship, but the story has this whole universe of possibilities, events and people that all have different arcs. Bellarke is just the biggest piece of the puzzle, but far from being the only one.I like to compare bellarke with Mulder and Scully from the x-files - it's pretty much the same concept. Their more-than-friendship bond. They would do anything for each other. Even the season they chose to make Clarke "jealous" is the same as the one where Scully realizes she has feelings for Mulder upon watching him with another woman. Jroth and the whole crew totally know the power of a slowburn between characters with such strong and rare chemistry. So I am just here enjoying the show, shipping the hell out of bellarke and loving/hating the plot :P idk if I made much sense??? I kept going back and adding things (i think much faster than I type) so I hope it doesn't turn out all messed up lmao

Title: Hearts of Angels
Author: Judy Mulder
Author’s notes: Rumbelle Christmas In July 2017 gift for the wonderful and incredibly talented @rufeepeach. It was such an honor and such a challenge to write for one of the best writers I know. It’s impossible to raise the bar that high (especially when English is not your first language!) but I made my best effort ;) Prompt: “It wasn't love but chance”. I have no idea why I wrote what I wrote, to be honest, because it has no direct relation with that phrase, lol. I incorporated your prompt in a way that is kinda cheating, hehehe. Nevertheless, I hope you like it. From your Santa, with so much love.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to @grace52373 for being my beta!!!!. This fic improved a lot because of you <3.
Summary: When Gideon’s behavior suddenly changes at school, Belle and Rumple start to wonder if they have spoiled their son too much, just like everyone in Storybrooke claim they had.
AO3 Link or continue reading after the cut
Rumplestiltskin gathered all the mail accumulated inside the pawnshop’s mailbox. Perusing through the envelopes, he wished that those ridiculous anonymous letters were finally over. He was sure it was a joke from someone trying to make fun of him. For the past couple of weeks, every day except for the weekends, he had been receiving a blank envelope with a few dollars inside and a computer written note that read “Storybrooke Rent Funds”. That was it. The amount of money never exceeded ten dollars. His patience about this matter was running thin because he knew someone was having fun at his expense, and the whole idea made his blood boil. The last thing he wanted was for people to think he was weak or harmless but it was extremely difficult to inflict great fear in the heart of people when they saw him everyday playing with a little boy and looking at his wife with absolute adoration. Not to mention his bi-monthly attendance to bulky family dinners where all the Charmings-Mills-Jones clan was reunited (along with several dwarfs from time to time). It definitely was not easy being the Dark One under these circumstances. Not that he actually wanted to be the man he was before, but at least he wanted peace and respect and the only way to get both was by keeping the façade of a dangerous and ruthless sorcerer in front of anyone who wasn’t Belle or Gideon. So, this was the reason why these mysterious letters were driving him mad. Someone was daring to believe that he wasn’t dangerous anymore. He would not allow it. Unfortunately, he was unable to investigate this matter further because he had much bigger and pressing problems at his hands right now. He sighed and put away the damn letter along with the bunch of other correspondences he had no intention of opening at that moment. He only wanted to close the shop for the day and go home, albeit he was afraid of dealing with a painful situation.
Gideon, his beloved five year-old son, was going through some sort of a “phase” that was driving him and Belle crazy. Until a few weeks ago Gideon was a perfectly behaved boy, with excellent grades at school, and in general, he was the pride and joy of his parents and teachers. But recently, he was utterly failing and slacking off at school. Mary Margaret was the first brave teacher that spoke to Rumple about Gideon’s change of conduct. Then other teachers followed and finally even the Principal had to intervene. Gideon seemingly stopped caring about school completely. He slept during classes, all his homework was half done or plain missing and he didn’t pay attention to any teacher’s instruction. Mary Margaret was sincerely worried because that was not the Gideon she knew. Before all this, Gideon was by far the best student in her class. If she were honest with herself, she was jealous that Gideon was a much, much better student than Neal was. They were even in the same class because, although Gideon was almost 2 years younger than him, he was way more advanced than any other kid his own age. If his own teacher was so worried about Gideon, there were no words to express how lost and alarmed Belle and Rumple were once they learned what was happening with their son.
They tried everything. They helped Gideon with his homework after school. They talked to him over and over again in the hopes he would open up to them. They took him to Dr. Whale and then to Archie. According to both specialists, there was nothing physical or psychologically wrong with the child. Gideon kept insisting to his parents that he was fine but that he simply didn’t like school anymore.
It was a common murmur among the inhabitants of Storybrooke that Rumple and Belle tended to coddle Gideon excessively. They never paid attention to those comments before because they never saw anything wrong in Gideon’s behavior and they were firm believers that if their son knew nothing but love, he would grow up happy and full of love to give. Deep inside, Rumple and Belle also knew that they were trying to compensate for whatever suffering the Black Fairy inflicted upon their son in another life. They never punished Gideon, they never yelled at him, because they both clearly and painfully remembered that Gideon was under the clutches of the most ruthless and cruel woman in all the realms. Nevertheless, and given the latest turn of events, Rumple and Belle started to re-evaluate their role as parents. To their dismay, they had to consider the possibility that they might had been accidentally spoiling Gideon during all these years.
Despite their best efforts to approach their son with love and patience, hoping that he would change his attitude towards school, nothing had worked so far. So today, when Rumple returned home from work, he and Belle would start taking other measures and attitudes towards Gideon, even if those would break their hearts. They were desperate and they had to do something. Gideon needed to know that even in his young age he had responsibilities to fulfill with himself and with his family. He needed to know what the consequences of not being responsible were. Otherwise, he would grow up as a flighty, capricious and untrustworthy man.
Rumple wished that everything that had happened in the past two weeks was just a bad nightmare and that Belle would be receiving him at home with a wide smile, telling him how proud she was that their son got another A+ in Mathematics. But when Rumple entered the living room, he found exactly what he feared. Belle’s expression was worried and sad and Gideon was sitting on the large couch with his face down, like he was already expecting a severe sermon. For a split second that image of Gideon reminded him of Belle fearing to be chastised for taking a magical object without his permission, causing an unmitigated disaster inside the Dark Castle. That thought made him feel like someone had just punched him in the stomach and guilt overwhelmed him for so many reasons. The last thing in the world he wanted was his son to be afraid of him. But he had to be firm tonight. He had to be a parent and not an enabler. It was all for his son’s sake.
“Gid failed his exams and homework again” Belle sentenced without any intention of prolonging this agony further. He could hear the disappointment in her voice.
“Son, do you have anything to say?” Rumple asked, shortening the distance between them. He crouched down in front of him as a last offering of playing this nicely. “Please Gideon, please tell us what’s wrong? Please tell us why you don’t want to study anymore? Your mom and I only want to help you.”
Gideon kept his gaze glued to the floor when he replied to his father “There is nothing wrong, dad. I just can’t be a good student anymore.”
“Well, that’s not a good answer.” Rumple stood up in all seriousness but still addressed him in a very calm tone. “If you want to be someone in life you have to study and you have to fulfill your obligations at school whether you like it or not.”
“Gid, you know dad and I love you more than anything, right? But this has to stop. From now on and until you decide to be good student again, you are grounded. You come home directly from school to your room. No TV, no computer, no video games, no toys” Belle informed her son and bit her bottom lip in an attempt to remain strong. Both she and Rumple decided together there was not going to be a “good cop/bad cop” routine in all this mess. Both of them would share the hard responsibility of disciplining their child.
“Also, in case you’ve forgotten, your birthday is next week. If you don’t change your attitude by then, there will not be a party and you won’t receive any gifts from anyone.”
This time, Gideon looked up and faced his parents with clear agony reflected in his eyes. He was the perfect image of Rumple and Belle combined into one tiny person. He had chocolate dark hair like his mom and he also had her chin and lips. But his eyes were identical to Rumple’s: same almond-like color, same sweetness inside of them. Now, those eyes were filling up with tears. It was clear that Gideon wanted to say something, but he didn’t, and instead he ran towards his room where he finally allowed himself to cry. Belle and Rumple look at each other with so much remorse and sadness from what they just had to do. Immediately, Belle closed the distance between them and buried herself in Rumple’s arms which held her tight. In no time, he felt his shirt wet and he knew she was crying too. And his heart broke because for the first time in years, he didn’t know how to fix this chip in his family.
***********
Gideon couldn’t stop crying. He was lying on his stomach in his bed and his face was hidden between pillows. He knew his parents were angry at him because he was not a good student anymore. But he couldn’t be one. Not if he wanted to help his friend Melissa. Gideon was willing to live with the anger of his parents and all the punishments they wanted to give him if that meant Melissa was safe and happy. But why Gideon was crying had nothing to do with being grounded and everything to do with the idea that his father didn’t love him anymore. How could he if he broke a promise to him? People were afraid of him because he was the Dark One and he’d never broke deals or promises under any circumstances. But his father had just broken a promise that he made to him in his second birthday. Gideon still remembered it like it was yesterday. He was opening dozens of gifts with his parents after a night filled with nightmares. “Mom, dad, you will always be with me to open birthday gifts, right?” They looked at him with a transparent smile and his father replied to him “Of course, Gid. I promise you that your mom and I will always be with you on your birthdays, you will never spend a birthday alone, and we will always open presents together.” Now, his dad told him there wasn’t going to be a birthday, nor gifts opening, which meant a broken promise. Gideon cried harder believing that the only reason his dad would do such a thing was because he didn’t love him anymore. Maybe mom and dad could only love a son who was smart and good at school. He loved his parents so much that the idea of them not loving him was very scary and very painful. But his parents were not in trouble like Melissa was. He needed to keep doing what he was doing to help her.
“Mom, dad, I am sorry for being such a burden for you. But please, please don’t stop loving me” Gideon asked in a whisper and kept crying until he fell asleep.
*************
Days passed and nothing improved in the Gold’s household. On the contrary, Gideon was closing off to his parents even more because he felt alone and unwanted. They were treating him with coldness that he never experienced before and he just didn’t understand it. Was school so important to parents? Was it so important that if you fail at it they would stop loving you? It truly seemed like it to Gideon. Every day that he came home from school with bad grades and teacher reports, he was sent straight to his room. He was only allowed to be outside of those four walls to share the family meals. And even those shared moments were awful. Silence predominated at the table right after his parents asked him for the zillionth time if he needed help, and obtaining a negative answer. Belle and Rumple were so lost about the whole situation that they never saw the increasing severity of their treatment towards Gideon. Although their only intention was trying to help their son to overcome this total apathy towards school, they were completely blinded about how much their kid was actually suffering.
And then, Gideon’s birthday came. To his utter dismay, it was a Saturday. During a school day he could have pretended that it was just a normal day, but now he had the entire weekend ahead of him and he was painfully aware that he was going to spend his birthday in complete solitude, remembering that his father broke a promise to him. Belle and Rumple were by his side as soon as he woke up, to say happy birthday and to hug him, which pleasantly surprised him. But there were no gifts, no celebration, and certainly no truce from his punishment.
**************
It wasn’t without difficulty that Melissa convinced her mom to let her go to her best friend’s house. Her mom, like pretty much everyone else in Storybrooke, was always wary of the Dark One. Yes, Melissa had heard terrible stories of Gideon’s father. In fact, the Dark One was the reason why her parents were in distress. Melissa also wanted to blame the sorcerer for Gideon’s suffering. But she knew better than that. She was the only one to blame for everything her friend was going through. And guilt was not letting her live in peace. She didn’t know what to do. If she said something, her own parents would be suffering the consequences, but if she stayed quiet, Gideon would continue hurting. With this internal fight occurring inside of her, and her mother saying things about “running” and “yelling for help” in case something weird happened inside the Dark One’s house, she grabbed the birthday gift she had for Gideon and left home.
The Gold’s house was just a short ten minute walk from Melissa’s. She was always in awe about how majestic the Victorian pink house was. Her own house was so tiny and simple in comparison. She wondered if one day she would be able to have enough money to live in a place like this…or just to have enough money so that her parents would not work to exhaustion to put a plate a food on their table. Melissa rang the bell of the mansion and a few seconds later, the Dark One himself appeared on the door frame. His expression was extremely sad.
“Hello Mr. Gold” the little girl with red hair, blue eyes and cheeks covered in lovely freckles, greeted with certain hesitation.
“Hello Melissa. Can I help you with something?” Rumple inquired, a little surprised of this Saturday early morning visit.
“I came to see Gid, Mr. Gold. I brought him a birthday present!” she explained, showing him the golden wrapped packaged she was carrying. A wide smile appeared on her face.
Rumple hesitated because Gideon was grounded and he was not supposed to receive any visits or any gifts. But for some reason, he couldn’t turn down the girl that was standing in front of him.
“Come on in. I will let Belle know that you are here, ok? Please take a seat” Rumple guided Melissa to the living room. She sat down contentedly in the biggest, most comfortable couch she spotted, and waited there for Mr. Gold to come back.
Rumple went to look for Belle in their in-house library. She was surely immersed in a book, even though reading lately was not a joyful activity as it used to be. For Belle, reading had rather become a research activity in an effort to understand what was happening to her son.
She didn’t even hear when Rumple entered the room and he had to clear his throat, trying not to startle her. When Belle’s eyes finally made contact with his, Rumple curiously peeked at whatever she was reading because it was clearly not a book about childhood or child behavior.
“What are you reading?” He warmly inquired, sitting beside her.
“I needed a break from psychology books. My head was killing me since we woke up. You noticed how sleep eluded me most of the night” He nodded and Belle returned her attention to the book in her hands. “This is poetry, a compilation from different authors. I was just reading the most beautiful one…listen to this Rumple” Belle immediately began reading, excitedly, without letting Rumple tell her why he was really there.
“It wasn't love but chance and rather sweet-
your newly weaned son asleep in his crib, your breasts too tender
to be touched. And touch itself, too early, indiscreet.
Your small son breathed and coughed. I tried to sleep
but couldn't ignore what your body engendered
in mine. It wasn't love but chance and strangely sweet.
I like your name; you're used to mine, ironic repeat
of your old lover's. With so few facts ought two people surrender
to touch? (Better to date, slow down, try to be discreet.)
Ok, let's walk around the pond, take a few months or weeks
to study each other and see what portends or
not. It wasn't love but chance and rather sweet.
I'm moved by you as well as touched: shy and indiscreet”.
“What do you think? Isn’t it beautiful?” Belle asked when she finished reading, smiling and snuggling against him.
“It is, sweetheart…but I came looking for you because there is something you need to know. Melissa is here.”
“Gideon’s best friend?”
Rumple assented. “She brought a birthday present for our son. Maybe we should make an exception in his punishment for today?”
Belle’s smile disappeared completely. She stood up and closed the poetry book, leaving it abandoned on a small table.
“There is nothing I would like more, Rumple. But remember what Archie said, if we change the set of rules that we already laid out for him, Gideon might think that we will eventually accept whatever he wants us to accept with respect to school. We can’t give in now. Not even when this is so painful.
Rumple nodded sadly, knowing that Belle was right. Rules were rules, as much as deals were deals. They couldn’t be broken.
“Come on, let’s explain the situation to Melissa”. Belle took Rumple’s hand leading him to where the girl was waiting.
“Hi, Belle!” Melissa chirped a happy greeting the moment she entered the room and went to hug her, returning afterwards to the couch.
“Hello, Meli. Rumple told me why you came to visit. I appreciate how much you care about Gid. But you must know that he is grounded and unfortunately he can’t receive any birthday presents for now.”
Immediately, Melissa’s face turned sad, almost like she wanted to cry.
“That is not fair! Gid deserves to celebrate his birthday more than any other kid that I know.”
“But you are aware that he hasn’t been fulfilling his obligations at school. Until that change, I am afraid he will continue to be grounded.” Rumple said, and Melissa looked at him. There was a hesitation in her eyes, but suddenly, there was determination as well.
“Then it is true! You don’t love Gid anymore because he is a bad student?” She angrily retorted.
“Of course not. Why would you think something like that? A parent never stops loving their children no matter what” Belle intervened because Rumple was not able to even formulate an answer.
“Gid thinks you don’t love him anymore. He said you broke a promise to him, and you never break promises” Melissa continued, still looking at Rumple.
“What?” Rumple managed to ask although a sharp pain was surrounding his heart, keeping him from breathing properly. When Melissa didn’t answer, Rumple tried again. “What promise did I break?”
“Um, he told me that when he was two years old, you promised him that he would never experience a birthday alone. That all his birthdays would always be filled with joy”
Rumple felt those words like a needle in his heart. Melissa was right. He did say that and he didn’t remember it until now. He made that promise to his son after a nightmare he had on his second birthday. It was a nightmare about him being alone and scared in a very dark place. Rumple knew what that dream meant and he wanted to reassure his son that he would never experience that. How it was possible Gideon remembered it and not him? Rumple was just so upset about what was happening at school that he just completely forgot about that promise.
Sensing the tribulation inside her husband, Belle intended to defend their choice with respect to Gideon’s punishment. “Meli, Rumple nor I intended to hurt Gid in anyway. We love him more than anything in the world. It is because of that love, that we made a difficult decision when he refused to care about school anymore. No kid has a future without education and we are trying to ensure that Gideon understands that, so he has the best possible future.”
Melissa hesitation was crystal clear again. She wanted to say more but was afraid of something.
“Gid never stopped caring about school. In fact, I think he could skip a few years without any problem.” Melissa said, avoiding Rumple and Belle’s confused looks. “You are wrong about everything. Gid isn’t lazy or irresponsible.”
“He falls asleep during classes, he fails at exams, he doesn’t do his homework…” Belle retorted but was abruptly interrupted by the little girl.
“He falls asleep at school because he doesn’t sleep at night!”
“That’s impossible. Gideon goes to bed every night at 9:00pm.” Rumple managed to explain.
“He only pretends he is sleeping at that time, then he waits a couple of hours, and when he is sure that you two are already asleep, he starts working until it is almost morning.”
“He works? Works on what?” Rumple questioned further, completely confused about what he was hearing.
“He does the homework for other students that pay him to do it. He is very good at imitating calligraphy so the teachers never catch him. He does about 10 different kids’ homework for them each day, especially for sixth and eighth graders. That’s why he can’t do his own or stay awake for an exam.”
“What?!” Rumple and Belle exclaimed at unison.
Melissa jumped from her seat, startled at that reaction.
Belle knew immediately that they needed to calm down if they wanted to reach the bottom of this nonsensical story. She sat besides Melissa, putting a hand on her shoulder.
Rumple remained standing, motionless in the same spot.
“Meli, I am sorry we scared you. We just really need to understand what you are saying because it doesn’t make any sense to us right now. Gideon is in second grade. How is it even possible he is doing homework for eighth graders?”
“That’s why I said he could skip years at school without problem.” Melissa replied with a hint of pride in her voice.
“Why on earth would Gideon want money for? Why did he think he needed to work for money? He has everything he needs and wants under this roof.”
Melissa dropped her head and gazed directly at the floor. When no answer was provided, Rumple pushed again. “Melissa?”
When the girl looked back again at him, he could see she was crying.
“He is doing everything for me. It’s my fault that he has been suffering this much for the past weeks!”
Belle reached for her and hugged her.
“Hey, it is ok, Meli. I am sure you have done nothing wrong”
“But it is my fault! I told him that Mr. Gold was taking the house away from my parents because they couldn’t pay rent. I told Gid I was afraid of living on the streets and he said he was going to help me with the rent!”
“Oh, gods, the envelopes!” Rumple felt sick to his stomach and in an effort not to throw up right there and then, he dropped on the armchair and covered his face with his hands.
“What envelopes?” Belle asked with a broken voice and tears welling up in her eyes.
“Gid put the money he was getting everyday in an envelope with a computer-written note and secretly slid the envelop in the pawnshop’s mail box before coming home. It was supposed to be a rent fund to cover my parent’s rent and whoever else that needed it. Gid said that way, his father would not have to leave anyone without a house anymore.”
The moment Melissa ended her explanation, Rumple audibly sobbed with his hands still covering his face. The girl looked at him with a mixture of curiosity and concern. Was the Dark One crying? That was impossible! Then she looked at Belle and she was crying too. Did she do something wrong? Was she in trouble? Was Gid in even more trouble because of her? She only wanted to help her friend and she thought that telling the truth would help. But now she was not sure what was happening.
Understanding her confusion, Belle cleared her throat in an effort to speak. But she failed miserably and only managed to sob harder. She was overwhelmed by emotions. Now she understood everything and she simply didn’t know what to do with the feelings she had at the moment. Gideon did the most beautiful, selfless sacrifice for a friend. He endured stoically every unjustified word, every unjustified accusation, every unjustified punishment both at school and at home, just to help his friend.
While Gideon was doing everything right, Belle and Rumple were doing everything wrong. They caved in and listened to everyone else’s advice. Deep down they always knew all this had nothing to do with their son being spoiled but everyone else in Storybrooke thought the opposite. Oh, how Belle regretted listening to them! If she felt this guilty and hurt inside, Belle couldn’t fathom how Rumple was feeling. But if the way he was trembling and sobbing with his face well hidden between his hands were any indication, he was in absolute hell. Belle needed to be strong now if they wanted to start making amends with their son. She cleared her throat again and this time she forced herself to speak.
“Meli, thanks so, so, so much for telling us the truth. We didn’t know what was happening and now that we know, we will reverse how unfairly we have treated Gideon.”
“I just want my friend to be happy again. I… don’t mind living on the streets if that means Gid is happy.”
“Oh, Melissa…” Belle kissed the girl on the forehead. If this little angel could love her son in this way, then she was like a daughter to her too. “I promise you that you will not live on the streets. Rumple never intended to leave your parents without a house. He is just a little…strict with rental agreements. You have my word that you and your parents will always have a roof over your heads.”
“Thank you, Belle!” Melissa hugged Belle again, finally free of the heavy weight that keeping this secret had on her and knowing that revealing it could cost her family’s home and everything they had. “Can I see Gid, now?” she asked excitedly.
“I am afraid we have to talk to him first, Meli, and it could take some time. Let’s make a deal, ok? Go back to your house and we will call you as soon as we have resolved this. Then we can celebrate Gid’s birthday all together. How does that sound?”
“Good! I can’t wait for Gid to see the present I got for him!” Melissa stood up and grabbed her present, ready to go home. She wanted to say goodbye to Mr. Gold but he was still in the same position and Melissa was sure he was still crying. “Is Mr. Gold ok?” she asked Belle.
“He will be. Thanks to you. Now, let me take you to the door. Be careful on your way home.”
At the door frame Belle hugged and kissed Melissa again. “Thank you so much for loving my son with your heart of angel.”
Meli smiled and started her way back home. When Belle returned to the living room, Rumple hadn’t moved an inch, although his breathing was a little more even now. She crouched down in front of him and took one of his hands between her own. When Rumple finally looked at her, she wanted to cry again. That haunted expression, red eyes flooded with tears, was crushing her heart.
“Rumple…” she managed to say and then she just hugged him, knowing there were no words in this world that could take back what they have done to their son.
Rumple hugged her back as if his life depended on it. He was a shipwrecked man and she was his salvation table. He bitterly cried on her shoulder until he was able to speak again.
“What have we done to our son, Belle?”
“There is no way we could have known. And please, I know you are doing it, but don’t put the blame on yourself.”
“How isn’t it my fault? I was being a monster, like I always am, while my son was being an angel… I don’t deserve this family!”
“Stop it Rumple, please. Yes, you could be nicer with your tenants from time to time, but you also very well know that you were never going to evict Melissa’s parents. It is your job collecting the rent. And sometimes that is not a pleasant job. That doesn’t mean you are a monster.”
“I hurt my son in the worst possible way. I am a monster.”
“You tried to do what you thought was best for him. We were wrong and misled by everyone else’s advice about parenting.”
“That wretched cricket and that stupid doctor Frankenstein!” Rumple replied angrily.
“They were dead wrong about our son. But we have the biggest responsibility here because we are his parents and they aren’t.”
“How can we fix this, Belle?”
“Well…I think we can start by apologizing to our son.”
“How I can look him in the eye now? I feel so unworthy of him. What if he doesn’t forgive me?”
“He will. How he couldn’t with that pure heart he has?”
Rumple was a little bit more hopeful now. He silently thanked fate for having Belle by his side. She was his strength as always.
“Come on. Let’s not allow our son to spend one more minute alone on his birthday.” Belle said while standing up and taking Rumple’s hand.
Those words were enough to arm Rumple with sheer determination. Gideon never deserved a birthday like this. But they still had time to change it.
They went up to their son’s bedroom and Belle gently knocked at the door.
“Can we come in, Gid?” she asked.
Gideon was reading a book and was surprised to hear his parents at his door. He thought they would not talk to him until lunch time.
“Yes, mom” he replied.
Belle and Rumple entered his bedroom and spotted their son curled in a corner with a book between his hands. The sight brought tears to their eyes again. This was so unfair and cruel. He should be playing with his birthday gifts, not all alone and sad just reading a book.
“Did I do something wrong?” Gid asked without understanding the expression on his parents’ faces.
“Of course not, son. You did nothing wrong…but we did.” Rumple knelt in front of Gideon. Belle followed the movement. Gideon’s expression was a complete puzzle.
“Dad? What’s happening?”
“What’s happening is that we know the truth, Gid. We know everything you did to help your friend Melissa.”
“But how?” Gideon gasped.
“Melissa was here and told us everything.”
“Dad, please do not take away Melissa’s house! They don’t have another place to live! I promise you I will work very hard to give you their rent money!” Gideon was so scared about the prospect of his friend being homeless that he didn’t even realize that his parents were trying to apologize.
“Gideon, I would never do something like that. I am so sorry that I let you believe quite the opposite.”
“Your father is a strict businessman Gid, but he is not heartless. He would never leave an entire family on the streets.” Belle intervened.
“I am sorry, son. Truly I am. You were doing something noble and brave for a friend and I was treating you unfairly and I even broke a promise to you because I was angry. I know all of that is inexcusable but…can you forgive me? Can you forgive us both?”
“Do you still love me?” Gideon asked both of his parents with a doubt that hurt so much.
“Of course we love you, son!” Rumple and Belle hugged Gideon “No matter what you do, we will always love you. Never doubt that.
Sadness finally left Gideon’s heart.
“I am sorry for lying to you and for not doing my homework. I was just trying to help Melissa.”
“We know that now, Gid. And we are so proud of you! But next time that you have a problem of any kind, please come to talk to us. We will resolve it together, as a family. Ok?” Belle pleaded.
Gideon nodded, smiling for the first time in weeks.
“Now, how come you were making ten dollars a day for ten eighth graders’ homework?” Rumple asked after kissing his son, in an attempt to lighten up the conversation.
“Um, well, the kids said that was a fair price.”
“Well, I have the smartest son in the world, but I think I could give him a lesson or two in business.”
Belle chuckled at that, but Gideon completely missed the joke.
“We are so proud of you. We will have to talk about having an in-home tutor because it is obvious you are more advanced than the other kids your age. But that can wait. Now, we have a birthday to celebrate!” Belle announced excitedly.
“Really!?”
“Of course, Gid. We will do whatever you want to do today and tomorrow. Oh, and you should call Melissa. She has a present for you!”
“Yes! I want to see her to tell her that you are not angry with me anymore! Can we go to Granny’s for a hamburger and iced tea and invite her?”
“Of course. That sounds like an excellent idea.” Rumple replied with guilt still gnawing at his heart, but feeling more in peace than he had felt in weeks.
“Thank you, dad, thank you, mom. I love you both so much!”
“And we love you too son”
The End.

I have a serious question for you. How is it possible to love a show this much? This stupid show and that very stupid pairing, you know Mulder and Scully, I just can't! I've been a fan for almost 22 years! I was 9 when it started airing in my country, I could feel their chemistry then. I vividly remember feeling butterflies when Scully saw Mulder kissing that Phoebe girl in Fire and shipping them so hard in Eve.. 😂 I can't tell you how happy this new season makes me! 😊
I feel you, Anon. I honestly don’t know how I got reeled back in. I have loved it since I was 11 years old and I’m 35 now. I used to lose my little mind watching Mulder and Scully. I was so certain that they were in love I would profess it to my whole family and they would laugh at me. I think they thought it was sweet.
My brother still teases me about it to this very day.
I remember HATING Phoebe in Fire. Wow, I was an angry little shipper! hahaha... I can see it differently now, I used to think Scully was super mega jealous in that scene watching Mulder kiss Phoebe, what I have come to recognise now, is that it was me who was super mega jealous lol
It’s funny you mentioned Eve, as that is my next analysis episode... Doing my notes today. *sigh*
You know, that’s how I know I love the show. Because the analysis series I’m doing - that’s love right there. I normally have zero patience for doing long write ups about things I love but look at me now. I can’t imagine my life without this stupid, amazing, heart-warming, heart-crushing, mind-blowing, alien-huntin’ love story of a show.
