Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton - Life Rides The Train (1975)
I read recently that Jason Ringenberg (Jason and the Scorchers) and Victoria Liedtke had recently recorded a version of this Porter Wagoner tune. So I went back to the wonderful Dolly/Porter rendition from one of their last LPs together.

On The Jukebox: Teddy Thompson - "My Love Of Country"
EP of covers of what I'm guessing are Teddy Thompson's favorite country songs. Track listing is as follows:
"A Picture Of Me Without You" (originally performed by George Jones)
"I Don't Love You Any More" (originally performed by Bill Anderson)
"Cryin' Time" (originally performed by Buck Owens)
"I Fall To Pieces" (originally performed by Patsy Cline)
"I'll Regret It All In The Morning" (originally performed by Richard & Linda Thompson; cute that he's performing one of his parents' songs)
"Love And Learn" (originally performed by Dolly Parton)
"Satisfied Mind (originally performed by Porter Wagoner)
"Oh, What A Feeling" (originally performed by The Everly Brothers)
"Is It Still Over" (originally performed by Randy Travis)
"You Don't Know Me" (originally performed by Cindy Walker)
[And yes, even though it's not billed as such, I am calling this an EP. Sorry, if you're under half an hour long, you're an EP; them's the rules.]

Grateful Dead - Tomorrow Is Forever 9/26/72
The Dead covering Dolly Parton/Porter Wagoner with Jerry & Donna sharing vocals. I have no tolerance for people who trash Donna. She was a big part of the band. She had off nights (just like EVERY member of the band) but she was a great singer when she was on. Much love for Donna Jean!

Imagine:
Dolly Parton singing a song she wrote about you on The Porter Wagoner Show when you left town for a better opportunity.

I accidentally deleted this post one and a half times, but it was so fucking weird that I really felt like I needed to do it again.
So I went to see The World of Marty Stuart today, which is a museum exhibit about Marty Stuart's life and place in American music. Marty Stuart was on the curation team, and his vision really shines through the entire exhibit. It starts off talking about how he served as just a humble band member in an already extant musical culture.
(L-R: Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner's costumes from The Porter Wagoner Show)
Then he became more central to the story, a genuine player in the scene. Much of the exhibit talks about his mentors, including his erstwhile father-in-law Johnny Cash.
(Handwritten presentation lyrics of "Man in Black" signed by Johnny Cash)
The next to last gallery is where everything truly starts to come off the rails.
There's a biblical concept called the crowd of witnesses which refers to the people who have gone before as well as the people who have strengthened you. This gallery is presented as the author's crowd of witnesses, so the whole gallery is presented ahistorically, with people popular in the late 20th century on back to the Carter family.
(Above left: acoustic guitar with a mother of pearl inlay reading "MERLE HAGGARD"; above right: acoustic guitar with a mother of pearl inlay reading "Johnny Cash" in script; below: a detail of a suit that I believe is from Marty Robbins)
The first thing as you walk into the gallery is a display of items from Jimmie Rodgers, who was known for his light colored, very simple, working man's clothing. You walk past that and back to back with that case is this fucking thing:
Ravens? Check. Chandelier with flickering red bulbs? Check. Top hat? Check. Out here looking like the Grim Reaper in his Sunday goin' to meeting clothes? Oh, absolutely.
This costume was used for the cover art for the album The Pilgrim and does not look nearly so goddamn buckwild on it. Please keep in mind this is the end of the gallery where he's talking about what he arose from, and it's like it ends with "and they came together to spawn me, the Phantom of the Opera!"
500/10 no notes would recommend exhibit, it's open in Jackson rn and will be moving permanently to a new museum in Philadelphia, MS, afterwards
